- "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step," says Lao Tzu, and so does a journey of 2,448 miles! Today is day one of our mega exploration of Route 66! This was a tough one, starting in LA, because 90% of your day will be traffic, just the stops in this video alone ended up costing north of $30 in paid parking, and there are few opportunities to pull over even if you see something amazing, but still! ROUTE 66 has begun! A few more days poking around the route in California and we'll be on the open road past the traffic, on our way to Chicago, Illinois, and back! I hope you're ready!
Today we see the original 1926 terminus (end) of Route 66 in Los Angeles, and then it's later official end point in Santa Monica, CA - followed by the more traditional ending point (or in our case, starting point) of the Santa Monica pier!
It may be the "End of the Trail" for westbound Route 66 travelers, but for us, its the start of another Randomland Adventure!

I have unapologetically rewatched this series more than I have anything else on RUclips! Thank you for all the hard work you put into your videos!!
I love your vids man, especially the Route 66 ones!
And so the journey down route 66 has begun.....Can't wait to watch all the videos....Happy Trails Justin and Stay safe out there!!!!
I've watched this series at least 1/2 a dozen times and I'm getting ready to do it again. I never get tired of it and we are planning our 5th trip on the route. It will be interesting to see how much has changed and sadly how much has vanished. No one has done this better than Justin.
I don't know how I found you, but I'm glad I did. I'm going to binge watch your Route 66 videos at 5 am. Go to sleep Michele
Holy schmoly. Makes me grateful I left LA and that traffic. My compliments to you for enduring it with a sense of humor.
If you have time, please list all the places where you stop: Where did you sleep (hotel/motel/teepee)? Where did you eat breakfast/lunch/dinner? Where did you stop for gas? What museums/gift shops did you visit? What amusements did you enjoy? What fun pics did you see?
So far you have been to Clifton’s Cafeteria and the Santa Monica pier.
Keep up the good work/fun!
I have not been in Clifftons for decades, but most certainly will add it to our December trip to Orange. Thank you for reminding me of all the wonders that still remain to be enjoied.
How cool!! I definitely want to travel all of Route 66 at least once before I die as well as see Southern California again. Love this! 🤩
I live in Duarte, CA and Route 66 runs right through the middle of town. I've been driving down Route 66 almost every day for the last 37 years. Every year the city has a parade commemorating the route. You gotta come check it out.
Thank you so much for your enthusiastic videos!! I love the history you share and your genuine excitement for The Mother Road. I just found your videos by accident and love watching them. I am now a fan!!! You help me get away in my mind when things get stressful. Looking so forward to many more!
You are teaching me so much about. Thank you. for all the time you spend making these videos.
Fantastic start! I can't wait to see the rest of Route 66, learn its history and see what it looks like in modern times. Thanks for working your butt off.
Good luck and be safe on your trip. We will be following you along on it, every step.
YES! The beginning has begun! So excited for this trip. Loved the previous set of videos for the coast to coast trip and the "Adventure of the Mexican Large Hat". I am super stoked this trip is end to end. Can't wait to see all the wild and wacky roadside attractions!!
Great info on the end of Route 66. This is a bucket list item for myself... one day. Till then I'm glad to join you here.
Thanks Justin for posting it we love route 66 as much as you do..never getting bored from watching it many times
I like the little nod towards Mr. Dapper. Nice work Justin, nice work.
Excited to see you back on the Mother Road!
Thanks Justin for sharing your knowledge of History with us!
Passing hometown of Highland Park!!! Safe travels Justin!
wow Justin i love how you've planned to make this trip on the EXACT one year anniversary of the Route 66 trip you took last year ON May 10, 2016. I FREAKING LOVE THAT!!! HAPPY ANNIVERSARY! !!
I will be holding on tight for the entire ride. Thanks for what you do!
Awesome!! SO EXCITED for this trip down Route 66!!!! This is going to be so fun! FUN PIC!!!!
I have seen alot of travel vloggers and I have to say you certainly do your research. Most know nothing or Google info and read the first thing they see, which is usually inaccurate. You actually dig deep and know what you're talking about.
I'm looking forward to this trip. Justin you've been studying the route. This will be fun.
Awesome start! I'm excited to see this Route 66 series. Good luck, Justin, safe travels and thank you for bringing us along for the ride.
I'm so excited to watch this journey unfold!
Long journey. Safe travels. Enjoy it!
I am so excited to see your route 66 trip!
We really enjoy your stuff! We just posted our first Route 66 video & plan to go backwards! Mel’s was open so we grabbed a bite to eat. You’re awesome!
In January I stood on Santa Monica Pier (stayed with friends in the area). even though I am a life long traveler you're love of Route 66 inspired me to go there. I was a bit sad that I didn't do more of it but I was worried about weather.
I am looking forward to seeing this series.
you're by my place dtla 🙂 I made the route 66 with my dad 3 years ago before he passed from cancer... we drove together a few months before his passing. I lost all of my photos from that trip. Thanks for sharing!
have fun Justin! be safe and hope all goes well on your journey! Can't wait to watch this series! you are doing what I always wanted to do someday!
Your narration on this episode was the best I've yet heard on your blog! Keep up the good work.
He has the patience of a saint. I would go out of my mind spending that much time in stop and go traffic.
You're awesome Justin! Can't wait for your next video!
I lived in LA for 15 years and had never heard of Clifton's! I'll have to check it out next time I'm up there.Looking forward to your trip!
Good luck on your trip! Be safe!
Excited about your entire Route 66 road trip. I was on Broadway St. back in Jan. for Theatre on Broadway. Awesome event. Hope you will vlog some of those theaters in the future.
I'm so stoked for this series. :)
I am so exited for the rest of your journey!! A couple years ago, I traveled on Tamiami Trail (US-41 from Tampa to Miami), and I remember slowly but surely moving along.
Only the incredible Justin Scarred could make driving through LA entertaining. I remember it taking over 3 hours just trying to get from Malibu down Wilshere into downtown LA! Hopefully you got home at a decent hour Justin! X
That drive you made through LA was one I made twice a day for 10 years. It's also why I no longer live in LA. Ugh, the traffic.
I wish you safe travels!
I love you screaming about going across LA love it. I understand you pain.
Enjoyed Clifton's on my last visit. Little did I know that I was so close to the original end of Route 66. Thanks Justin. Love your vlogs.
Great video mate! I feel the same way as you about downtown LA, but despite that I think I'd still love to see some more content in and around LA itself once you get back from your road trip. Maybe checking out some of the old buildings like the Bradbury or going to Griffith Park to visit Walt's Barn etc??
Safe journeys. I have been looking forward to this since your last trip!
Have a safe trip looking forward to watching the Journey on Route 66 !!
I love watching you do all of your trips in California I haven’t been there for so long I miss it so much!😢
Yay! Glad to to see you in Downtown LA! Los Angels has so much culture and I'd love to see more of it ☺️ I'm watching from Little Tokyo now but I live in East LA.
66!!! Wooo hoooo! Travel save man!
Shout out to the temple. Woot woot. So excited for this series!
Hey Justin! I'm from argentina and a big fan of your videos. Keep doing this, you are really good at it. I Hope someday can do this roadtrip by myself; But for now i'll be enjoying route 66 through your eyes (...Or camera). Have a nice trip!
Watching this over and over. hope there will be another Route66 trip :)
I am really stoked for this epic
amazing as always! can't wait to tune in to the rest of your trip!
GET YOUR KICKS ON ROUTE 66!!!!!!!
Woah! This looks amazing! It'd be so fun to journey through Route 66. Clifton's looks like such a fun restaurant tbh, I'd really like to go there one day. I was born in LA - don't live there anymore though, but I never knew it had so much history in it's downtown area. So cool!
Ate many times in the 50's as a child at the Clifton's in old downtown Long Beach.
I live in long beach where at in long beach is clifton's
Clifton's was North of the old Walker's Department store in the same block, downtown Long Beach. It was gone before Buffum's moved out of downtown.
I know you love history so you probably have this book, but if not, find the guide to Route 66 by Michael Wallace.
If that name sounds familiar, Mr Wallace was the voice of the Sheriff in the Cars movies.
Great video! Love your style of storytelling :) and now I want to go on a road trip. Also thanks for driving down (though more like sitting on) the old portions of Route 66; I would not have had enough patience for that :)
Love the video's with history, and I'd love to watch a video of the pier! Keep it up!
Hey you did this last year on the same day!! I just told you who the Supia are in that Vlog. Oh well i guess I will watch these as well. I am also amused by how your vocals have developed over the year. Very fun.
Way cool! We drove all the way from Las Vegas to Schaumburg, IL, which is above Chicago. We went to the Six Flags up here as well and it is a really CLEAN park. Maybe we can meet up somewhere.? I hope to see you soon and be safe!
Safe travels!
I love your videos, you"re hilarious, informative,I've never been on route 66 but between you and the author Richard Paul Evans and the invention of youtube,I get to live that dream, thank you.
Let the good times roll!
it looks like I should grab some popcorn!
Bon voyage, mon ami!
Good luck from San Diego!
You're making me feel like an old subscriber! I remember that "Parks and Rec" building from one of your past videos! Love how informative your videos are though!
That was fascinating! I have always wanted to see the Santa Monica pier! I had no idea that it was the official end of Route 66. Where's Ally? You aren't going to forget her, are you? You guys have fun and be safe on your trip! I wonder why Route66 doesn't end all the way to the East coast? That would have been cool. Anyway...TY for sharing and happy trails!
I drove a little bit on Route 66. I even spent a night in shamrock Texas. Good road to ride.
Oh, man, I remember living in California, I *hated* the traffic. I lived on a main road in Woodland Hills, it was awful. I have the worst anxiety that's easily triggered by being stuck in traffic. The only good thing was being an hour or so away from Anaheim!
Great video! I live a block away from Route 66 (central) in Albuquerque.
Bon voyage, Justin! Be sure to swing by Grants, NM! There's a pretty cool mining museum there where you go underground.
Excellent!
Gonna be an awesome adventure cant wait to see the next one :)
watching again loved this :)
I love these vids!!!!!!
Pretty Cool first day...
I am reminded of US 1, in Key West, the mile marker 0 sign!
One highway you need to put on your bucket list is the Alaskan Highway.
That restaurant was the historic Penguin Restaurant and Mel’s Dinner has bought it to take over. Mel’s is from Hollywood. I grew up in Santa Monica. I drive Santa Monica Blvd thru WLA, Beverly Hills, Hollywood at least once a week. 😊
My wife and I will be on Route 66 heading east starting next Wednesday hope we run into you for a hello and a fun pic!!!
I love your videos justin
id love to see more of Hollywood when u come back, especially the Troubadour.
hahah that shirtless guy is a trip. He's always there on the pier....
Have safe trip
Awesome!
I can't help but think of Depeche Mode's cover of "Route 66" whenever I see, well... Route 66! Sure, it's weird to think of a British alt rock band when discussing an American highway... But that's just the way I think.
I heard that LA could very well possibly host the 2024 Summer Olympics!
Last time at the pier was with Mr. Dapper and Julio? Background shot...I can't believe that police p/u truck pulled someone over. Only scouts and suvs are tasked with that where I'm from. And let the journey(pun on vehicle you're using) begin!!
from SD GOT A fun pic at the end of the road at the pier
Love it
1:20 You've got googly eyes, Justin! :)
First time seeing The pier since iv been, I would have visited the booth if I knew. If you see this Justin I'm in AZ, born and raised would mean more then a like if I could meet you but, welcome to az when your come thru
