      Can be, and often are, but not necessarily so. The two older cars aren't that complex, there are good specialists around, at least in the UK, and many have had common money pit issues addressed. The Merc is complex, but is significantly newer. Going forward, the older two cars are modern classics. I don't see prices going up that much, but I also don't see them going down any more, although there's always the possibility that they might go down a little if the classic market as a whole collapses. The Merc is by far the most luxurious and easiest to drive and live with, but also the least exciting to own, and it's not as if it doesn't have the potential to be a money pit. It's also going to continue to depreciate. The technology is remarkably current though, and represents a lot of car for the money. Stick with the basic 500 model and you don't have any turbo or supercharger issues, is unlikely to have been driven hard, and has probably done most of its miles cruising on the motorway, totally unstressed. It's also relatively cheap. A very modern and classy car from GBP7-8K. Objectively better than a Bentley Conti GT, except for interior quality, and looks, but the Bentley's centre console is very dated, can have terminal electrical/electronic issues, and can have head-gasket problems that cannot be fixed, ie, there is a significant chance of such being a ruinous money pit.

      Never really understood the British obsession with "BADGE SNOBBERY".
      Ifyou are driving a 10 to 15 yr old luxury car anyone looking at the number plates will immediately know how old it is and know it's not new.
      You aren't fooling anyone.

      Very unlikely, IMO! The market is more likely to collapse than continue rising. None are in short supply. The DB7 was made in large numbers for an Aston, the i6s were particularly poorly made, and the potential supercharger issues should be enough to continue to warn buyers off. Prices mentioned in this video are incorrect. CL 500's are from 7-8K for a good one with circa 80K miles, and will continue to depreciate. 3200 prices, although very slowly rising, are from 10K for a decent one with circa 60K miles. DB7 i6 prices are from circa 15K with moderate miles and appear to be softening! There's a manufacturer approved V12 for sale right now for 21K with circa 60K miles, which has been for sale for ages, and can likely be had for even less with a 12 months warranty included. I've seen several V12s with circa 80K miles in good colourways for less than 20K in recent months. Prices are softening. Prices are also softening on DB9s and very much so on Bentley Conti GTs. Best cheaper Aston to buy from an investment standpoint is a Vantage 4.3 manual. Prices softening the slowest, and if there's an upturn in the market, that's where the greatest demand seems to be. Manual cars seem to be where demand is strongest, and the general perception is that the V8s are significantly cheaper to maintain, which isn't really the case, but it doesn't take a genius to see the appeal of a manual Aston in a smaller and lighter package than a DB9, as a weekend B-road weapon of choice for many aspirational people, and IMO, the Vantage 4.3 manual is the car currently available sub-30k that is most likely to firm and even slowly go up in value. Of course, YMMV.

    There is like 15 Aston Martins for sale in whole country, and prices start from 60000€ Maserati is almost as rare but less money, and there is no services available either of those cars at here. So the Mercedes is only sensible option, and you can get Merc like that for +20000€ but that´s a high mileage car. So I would rather spend that money to 2012 E-class with reasonable mileage.

      In a world where there are multiple wordviews. Certainly since Mercedes became widely used as taxis and introduced the original A-Class, and quality of the most of its offerings took a nose-dive. Of course, Maserati in the 80's and 90's weren't that great, and the current Ghibli and Levante in particular aren't that great either, and the GT hasn't been significantly updated in 13 years, and the Alfieri hasn't been forthcoming, and FCA put Maserati under Alfa, and Alfa decided to take Maserati down-market.
      Despite all that, for older people, we remember the racing heritage under the founding brothers, the cars under Orsi ownership and even under Citroen ownership, and even under DeTomaso ownership the cars still offered something a little different.
      When Fiat put Maserati under Ferrari's wing things looked up. Even though Maserati and Ferrari were once competitors, it made sense to realign Maserati as an offering to Ferrari customers as an every day 'Ferrari', and an offering to capture those aspiring to Ferrari ownership.
      Even now, you say you own a Mercedes, what do you own, an A-Class, a van, a truck, an S-Class, an AMG GT, or what? The brand is arguably the most heavily diluted prestige brand, although it is fair to say that Merc appears to have recently decided to reverse the decreasing quality since the late 90s.
      Maserati is again being diluted by FCA under Alfa after resurging under Ferrari, but it's still holding on to poorer man's Ferrari and Aston status or offering alternatives to Porsches, Audis, BMWs, and the likes of the AMG GT, especially as Aston has diluted the Vantage while significantly increasing its price, Audi has blurred the lines between some of its offerings and Lamborghinis, and Porsche put uninspiring flat-fours in the 718s and continued using Audi engines in several models, and most recently offering a very ordinary Audi i4 in the Macan.
      It is therefore fair to say that Maserati is not alone in diluting its brand, it just seems to receive more attention for doing so, even though it is still a low-volume maker with only four/five current model lines.
      Fact is that the GranTurismo/Cabrio still sells after 13 years with little updating. It was widely thought to be underpowered when launched. It is now underpowered by at least 150-200 bhp, yet it still sells. Infotainment system wasn't updated for 11 years and the current update is essentially two years old already, yet it continues to sell. Why? It remains a beautiful design. Its old-school engine makes a glorious noise. It was a cut-above when it was first introduced 18 years ago, let alone now when almost everything else has gone turbocharged. Despite it being in need of replacement, a good case can still be made for it at its price point. The latest AMG GT 476 is only slightly more powerful and is a little more expensive. The Maser is certainly prettier and is naturally aspirated. The AMG is distinctively German and the Maser is very distinctively Italian. Despite its age, the Maser clearly offers something that still appeals, and that is testimony to a great original design by Pininfarina and the enduring cachet of the Maserati brand.
      While Maseratis may not objectively deliver all that they promise, the brand still evokes a promise of something exotic, combining elegance, performance, and aural delight, that even a Mercedes in AMG-guise does not.
      All that said, I like Maserati styling and style, and its exotic promise, even if it generally falls short on delivery, and I like many Mercedes offerings that lead in comfort and technology and AMG offerings that are Germanically clinical and brutishly Germanic.
      A Maserati owner is often very much an individual thinker who wants something different yet understated, or is someone who wants to give that impression. I think Mercedes owners least desire to express their individuality, but are otherwise much more difficult to define as a single group. There are many reasons and combinations of reasons to want to buy a Mercedes.
      In certain contexts, Mercedes can be argued to offer great value for money. Mercedes clearly have widespread appeal.
      On the other hand, Maserati is a niche brand, although FCA clearly has other ideas.
      Maybe the problem with Maserati at this point in time is that it is undergoing an identity crisis and that reflects poorly on both owners and the brand's relative prestige?
      Maserati shouldn't be an illogical choice in the mass market, where Mercedes is clearly a very logical choice, but should be a very logical choice in a niche market where there should be no other choice.
      The problem for Maserati seems to be the sustainability of such a niche market for traditional Maserati customers in a world where expressing individual thought more generally is increasing suppressed, and where a mass-market Maserati is an oxymoron.
      In such a world, Maserati struggles to maintain its relevance and a widespread recognition of its badge value.
      It is a problem that once again Maserati's badge value is in question, but is hardly surprising when FCA seems unable to see Maserati's badge value, develop a strategy for its ongoing sustainability like it has for Ferrari, and see that the world is fully able to sustain a second premium 'FCA' brand. FCA seems determined to do to Maserati what it did to Lancia.
      Cut Maserati free like Ferrari. Give it the resources to develop a line-up of three coupes (a GBP60K offering, a 90K and a 120K) and a Qp in three forms, a diesel/electric executive express, a Ferrari-level of luxury sports saloon, and a serious M5 competitor. Put Lancia under Maserati and give it the resources to develop a line-up of three SUVs (a GBP 50K offering, an 80K and a 110K), serious alternatives to the Macan and Cayenne, and something perceived to be a budget Urus, maybe also offered in a Dakar Rally spec primarily aimed at Mid East markets.
      Then, I'm sure Maserati (and Lancia) will get the mojo back, relevance back, and regain widespread recognition of the badge value.
      Until such a time, I'm afraid Maserati's badge value will remain in question, as it has been questioned here.
      Thank you for allowing me this rant.

    The R230 SL500 is actually the more accurate "cheap" alternative to the DBS Superleggera and 812SF, instead of the CL500.

    • @nigel.w
      @nigel.w 4 года назад

      SL600 and CL600 are also both possible with moderate miles for less than 16K. Maserati GranTurismo 4.2 with moderate miles is also now readily available from under 20K, and even the 4.7 is now readily available for less than 25K. DB9s are also readily available for less than 30K. Not sure I can agree that either the CL or SL really offer a similar vibe to the DBS Sl or 812 Sf, but IMO are both good sporty coupes with a good, although less bragworthy, pedigree. I think Fifth Gear lost the plot somewhat with what they decided to present as cheap/er alternatives to the DBS Sl and 812 Sf.

    The prices in this video are way out. 15K for a 3200 is for a really good one, not the starting price for an average one, which is about 10K. 30K for a DB7 i6 is double what you pay for an average example. There's a manufactuer approved V12 for sale with moderate miles for 21K, and it's been up for sale for ages with the price continually dropping, so you'd get it for even less. And you can get a CL 500 for 7-8K with average miles for those cars (circa 80K) at all times. All three cars represent good value for money right now. Average prices for a 3200 have been slowly rising the past few years, but slowly is the key word. All these cars have highly variable asking prices, especially the 3200 and DB7, but it's easy to rule out the chancers asking way over the odds, either ignorant of the market or trying to drive prices dramatically upward. The DB7 i6 is the least reliable of these and the most expensive to fix, although the 3200 has a tendency to suffer from terminal end-float. The CL 500 is a very different GT to the other two, but you can get an CL 63 AMG or a CL 600 for circa 15K or a CL 65 AMG for less than the 30K Vicki reckons you'll pay for a DB7 i6. If you want a good 3200 in a good colour combo, you will almost certainly need to pay circa 15K, but you should be able to get a good one in the all too common silver or the unloved green from 10K. Higher milers go for less than 10K. Lastly, both the 3200 and DB7 i6 are readily available with a manual transmission, which just might make them relatively desirable going forward, but both have cramped pedal boxes, especially the DB7, so slim feet only, and maybe the autos better suit the character of these cars. PS. Just don't see how the potential costs of supercharger issues can make an i6 DB7 attractive compared to a V12. They otherwise share the same costly issues. PPS. All three cars demand a pre-purchase inspection by a specialist to hopefully avoid buying a money pit!

      You're right on all counts. Only thing on the 3200 float problem is that anything still on the road now has had it fixed. It was so terminal that by about 2015 you'd not be able to find a working one without it being fixed. But don't worry - there's still a breathtaking amount of expensive things can go wrong on them!!!

    • @nigel.w
      @nigel.w 4 года назад +1

      @@hickster5000 Of course, you are right. But I always allow for the odd exception. Fact is that most 20 yo cars that had inherent problems have had those problems solved by now. And most ongoing problems are down to lack of use. Take IMS bearing issues on 996/986, it is lower mileage cars that are most at risk. But it's not that expensive to replace preventatively, or one can simply regularly maintain such a car and get the oil analyzed every time it's changed looking for metal deposits, etc. Anyway, people need to understand that cars need to be driven to stay in good shape, and that unlike the likes of the typical Toyota, skipped maintenance on cars like these is a road to tears. And that no model of car is completely immune to the possibility of something major going wrong.

    • @nigel.w
      @nigel.w 4 года назад +1

      I am a big Maserati fan, but I agree 100% that the brand is being taken significantly downmarket with these offerings, and V6 petrols that are grossly underpowered compared to the Alfa Giulia Qf. Putting Maserati under Alfa has been pretty disastrous. And now they've dropped the Ferrari V8 option from the Qp lineup. On top of that no GT replacement or even a significant update in 13 years, and no Alfieri, just another four-door and an SUV aimed at ferrying salespeople up and down the motorway network and doing the school run. I can live with a diesel Qp option for senior executives that do a lot of miles and who may have a Ferrari for weekends, or for the Chinese market, etc, but not the Ghibli and Levante that would have been better marketed under a new sub-brand, such as Orsi or Ettore, and mainly marketed in the likes of Central and South America and the Mid and Far East. I also think that the Ghibli is a little too small and the Qp is a little too big. The previous Qp made more sense, although I personally rather like the design of the current Qp. Again a bigger car for the Chinese market is fine, but not necessarily good for the rest of the world, and again maybe better marketed under a new sub-brand. I suspect FCA will ignore my proposals, but just in case they want to think about them, I only want three million US dollars for taking up my proposals to better align the Maserati brand, which is an absolute bargain in today's corporate landscape.
