- Periyar Tiger Trail is a Camping & Trekking Program offered by Periyar Tiger Reserve, Thekkady. In the Tiger Trail, nature lovers are in the hands of a team of guides hardy and dependable who know the forest and its ways intimately. They were once poachers who have been transformed into the protectors of the forest and now part of the protection force of PTR and handling the Periyar Tiger Trail Program. Tiger Trail is an adventurous camping and trekking program of one-night - two-days and two-nights - three-day duration. The team consists of a maximum of 6 visitors, 5 guides and one forest official. For the tiger trail booking you need minimum of 2 person and the per head rate is 10000 Rupees per head for the two night program and 7500 Rupees for one night stay.

no 10k per head, if you want to take another person you have to book for him by paying another 10k
so total 20k for 2 people and that too you have to book online for both tickets

Our wait since 2019 is over, and we finally got our group together for this program, we have booked it for April 6th, 2024. I do see that they have made improvements worth that price hike of that additional 1600/-. I know the facility would be still on solar power, do we now have the option to charge the camera batteries, or we should be carrying enough power banks?
individual plug points are not there, you can use the available plug from guides room incase of emergency - better to carry power banks

As someone whos been part of numerous bird and butterfly surveys in many parts of kerala, I am genuinely shattered to see the forest department open up forests of kerala to the general public.. as human interaction with animals increases, conflicts will also increase.. 10-15 years back we'd have one or two surveys in a forest each year, but now every single day you have visitors into the forests. The government just wants to nake money and so they're doing their best extract money from our forests. this is plain corruption.
I recently went to kallar when I visited my home town Trivandrum. The whole region has lost its insect and bird diversity. It is heart wrenching to see the government do this to our forests in the name of tourism. We have such a narrow strech of forests in Kerala, the forests and green coverare depleting at alarming rates(especially wetlands). And government is doing absolutely nothing to improve the situation.
I understand your viewpoint. Controlled eco-tourism with guides and monitoring aims to minimize human-animal conflict and promote responsible behavior. However, it's important to continuously assess and adapt these measures to ensure they're effective in preserving wildlife habitats while allowing for sustainable tourism.
@@DotGreen Dear Mr. Dotgreen, I'm not blaming you for making videos or for visiting these places. It's your profession and your interest. But these things just shouldn't be promoted and to label such acts as "sustainable tourism" is as low as it gets. There is no such thing as "sustainable tourism". It's as silly as saying "responsible drinking". Both these things don't exist and there are plenty of studies out there which highlight how ecotourism directly leads to rapid decline of biodiversity. I'm not speaking based on intuitions, I'm speaking based on published reports in some of the best scientific journals which are available in the public domain for you to read and comprehend. Before justifying these corrupt and short sighted acts of the government, tourism department and forest department, show the patience to read different reports on the state of the western ghats and how it's one of the fastest depleting biodiversities in the world. Check reports on similar "ecotourism" project from across the globe including ones in Africa like Masai mara. All show extreme negative impact on both floral and faunal life. It's over a decade since multiple reports in the western ghats were tabled in the parliament of India, yet, we continue to permit indiscriminate human exploitation in one of the ecologically fragile zones in the world in the name of tourism and "development".
You are very wrong in your views on this matter and the only reason why you speak like this is because you are completely oblivious to how eco tourism has destroyed the biodiversity in many parts of Kerala. Please do not speak in Utopian idealistic tones about unrealistic views on ecotourism.
Most people think that just because the tiger population in some national parks has become quite stable, ecotourism is helping creatures. But these people don't understand that biodiversity isn't about large mammals alone. Large mammals contribute to just 0.25% of biodiversity on this planet. More than 40% are arthropods, around 30% are fish, about 10% are molluscs and so much more. Biodiversity is managed and maintained by these creatures, not by the forest and wildlife department of Kerala or corrupt laws passed by the Union parliament.
The western ghats of Kerala has one of the highest density of endemic creatures. This is especially true for insects, snakes, frogs, fish and other smaller creatures. These are not even studied properly. As a matter of every year we continue discover new species of ants from Kerala because they were not studied well earlier. But their population also continues to fall. Even my personal records have shown over 25-30% decline in insect diversity in the past 10 years in some parts of Kerala. Many birds have changed their habitats due to extreme changes to their natural habitat and due to increased human interaction.
Tourism is merely a matter of entertainment for humans. but the forest, is their home. There is nothing people like me can do to stop people from entering forests purely for entertainment and relief, other than trying to educate them from going there.
Just one more note regarding forest officials, I know plenty of forest officials who share the same concerns as I do. And that even includes IFoS officers. But they too are helpless, because the ultimate say on all this lies in the hands of politicians.

Deforestation for infrastructure development, including roads and dams, also significantly diminishes critical habitats for various species. Additionally, unchecked pollution, whether from industrial, agricultural, or domestic sources, has adverse effects on both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Overexploitation through activities like overfishing, illegal wildlife trade, and unsustainable harvesting of resources further strains delicate ecosystems. Climate change exacerbates these issues, causing alterations in temperature, rainfall patterns, and sea levels, directly impacting Kerala's diverse flora and fauna. Addressing these multifaceted challenges requires comprehensive strategies that go beyond eco-tourism regulation to encompass sustainable land use, conservation efforts, and community involvement in preserving Kerala's rich biodiversity.

Please read scientific journals before trying to educate someone who's been involved in conservation for more years than you have lived on this planet. From South Africa to the Himalayas and from Amazon Basin to Alaska, ecotourism has always had far more negatives than positives and has caused rapid decline in biodiversity ever since its inception across the globe. And I never said, ecotourism alone is the cause for loss for biodiversity, it's one of the causes. Rather agriculture and tourism(and sometimes National Defence) serve as gateways into forests for corrupt politicians, exploitation furthers from there for decades.
Until now you had some of my respect, but your illinformed adamant halk baked rhetorics, impractical ideals and copy pasted statements have made me realise that this whole argument with you is pointless and that I'm trying fill an inverted vessel.
