CX-9 air intake to filter, and from filter box to throttle body is PINCHED to cut off the top end power. You are complaining about cabin noise. Have you tried the new highlander and its cabin noise. This has great noise insulation. Rest i agree with. Love it.
I agee, my '21 CX9 GT was the quietest of all the 3 row SUVs I test drove. I used a phone app that recorded the noise volume. The '21 Highlander was the loudest. I couldn't figure out where the noise was coming from. I kept trying to rollup the driver's side windows. As I discovered later the wind noise was coming from the drivers sde mirror.

I like the CX9, too, but I think that the Telluride looks better. I also think that the Palisade has a better interior. Considering its age, though, the CX9 is still a good looking SUV. By the way, my 2017 CX5 reads stop signs and speed limit signs. So I think the CX9 has done that for a while now. Thanks for the review.

@@mbenton6 The 2014 Mazda 6 I bought brand new as soon as they came out (I still have it), Grand Touring trim, was the worst for road and wind noise. It ranks as the lowest graded Mazda 6 they made for noise. You don't think Hyundai can learn from feedback and improve? CX-9 also suffers from 6 speed transmission. I had a 2020 GT CX-9 for a month. Drove 1000 miles. Super nice ride. Especially local roads. On highways when you go over 65mph, the RPM's start to go up and you start hearing the engine and also get some engine feedback. At 75mph the RPMs are between 2500-3000. The only reason I want to buy the CX-9 is for long hauls and the engine is held back by 6 transmissions. But Mazda is not listening even though it's been a complaint for a while. And no panoramic roof? That's been asked for years. Mazda is not listening here either. The 2021 is super nice but these 2 quirks are sort of a big deal when you're spending over $44,000 for a vehicle.
I have a CX9 and I can tell you I bought it because of the reliability so that knocked out the Jeep Grand Chereokee. The RAV4 has the reliability but it smaller. It has a standard NA 4 cylinder. So power is going to be lagging, especially the trans. The CX9 power delivery is smooth and refined but it comes at a price. If you don’t need the size, the RAV 4 may be the way to go.
Rav4 is a smaller car. I think the Jeep GC is a really good suv but the cabin is starting to show its age. I think the CX-9 looks better inside and outside and has better technology.
My issues with Mazda, they should use lighter colors on the interior. I m not in favour of whitish tones, but dark grey makes it too dark. Seats lack under thigh support. There should be a button to turn off traction control, it can help if you get stuck in snow. I own a CX5, and these things apply to the CX9 too.
Soul Red is available on the Signature version. Mazda should add three more features to this model and make it a serious competitor to an RX-350. Too many Machine Grey and Carbons sitting on dealers lots. On my short list for my next car.
Good refresh improvement to the exterior, better front and back refresh and leds, but not a fan of the chromed out look...the interior looks great, and many front and back seat seating options and seat mobility...although it could be stretched and made into the large flagship it is. This new model is a close model similar to the new '21 Acura MDX flagship, that has a more substantive and fresh new look.
@@Couchlover47 Because Highlander has better tech specs and you get more bang for your buck! I have 2020 Volkswagen it has moon roof and great tech with it for only 32,000 dollars way cheaper than Mazda cx9 that lacks the stylish interior. Nice review and you pretty much hit all the points good and bad about it. Besides the center console and the aesthetics, do you find anything different about the drive or features compared to the 2020 model? 2020 models are beginning to come down in price and am considering getting one. I don't mind the seats. I'd say they are firm but still comfortable for me. I like the firmness a little and over time they may soften up a bit.
Thanks for the support! The drive is pretty much identical to the 2020. The biggest change is the infotainment screen which I believe is a big upgrade. But everything else is close to being the same.
Love my 2019! The handling has definitely hit the sweet spot. Lots of power, but the engine seems a little overworked when you press the throttle a little. Quiet everywhere but the engine bay. This vehicle exudes class and quality, if only it had a 6 cylinder....
I love the exterior design so I would trade it for a bit of space, I can live with it no complaints at all. You didn't mention the new Carbon Edition which is awesome and it offers new colors and interior.👌 👌 😀 😀
I have a 2015 CX9 Mazda ..I like the car but the console is toooo big and bulky ..I hate it and driving for a living my right leg and hip is always hot from the heat from the console. I also have to always press door opener at least twice to lock or unlock ..sometimes 3 .the seats are not so comfortable after a few hours ..I do like that the front drivers seat lays back but the passager side doesn't go all the way down. The front wheel drive gives off a constant noise of humming...drives me crazy .. but I still owe on the car and hate to go deeper in debt to change vehicles. Not sure if I'd buy another ..really big SUV ..gas milage could be better
"...going after the big boys"? Come now. The CX-9 is the slowest selling mainstream midsize crossover on the market. In the first half of 2020 Mazda sold slightly more than 13,000 CX-9's in the US. That put it in 25th place among all midsize SUV's and 20th among mainstream midsize vehicles. Not only was it outsold by every other mainstream entry (by a LOT), it garnered fewer sales than five luxury brand SUV's. The next slowest selling 3 row mainstream entry was the VW Atlas with nearly 25,000 sales. An "enormous amount of cargo room"??? Compared to what? The 71.2 cubic ft of total cargo space is the least of ANY midsize crossover. Less than a Honda CR-V! In a vehicle that's exceeded in overall length (199") by only the Dodge Durango and the Chevy Traverse. It's difficult to imagine a less efficient allocation of interior space. With an aging 6 speed transmission and 4 cylinder turbo engine shared with the Mazda6, the CX-5, and (soon) the CX-30 and Mazda3, the minimal, mainly cosmetic upgrades in the 2021 CX-9 aren't likely to help sales much, if at all. Mazda fans will tout the CX-9's good looks and driving characteristics. And they may not care that sales are so dismal. But Mazda obviously does care. The CX-9's weak sales aren't the only problem Mazda faces. Of its entire lineup only the CX-5 is moderately successful in terms of sales. And that's why the automaker is seeking a $2.8 Billion loan from Japanese banks to help it survive.
Mazda is less than one tenth the size of Toyota and Honda so Mazda’s volume of sales are relative to the company’s size. Also, all of the Japanese manufacturers have taken out loans comparable to their manufacturing size to weather the pandemic. Mazda has slightly more debt on the books (which it’s servicing)compared to the other Japanese brands but that larger amount of debt was partly due to loans used to buy back all of the stock from Ford in 2014-2015. Undoubtably, Mazda’s quality and driving characteristics have improved significantly since becoming 100% Japanese-owned again. If you drive a CX-5 / CX-9 and then drive a RAV4/Highlander or CRV/Pilot you will see and feel the difference. The upcoming in-line 6 will be a game changer for the company. Mazda is in it for the long haul.
Does not look much different (both exterior and interior) comparing to my 2016 CX-9 Grand Touring :-(. Come on Mazda, it's been almost 5 years! Don't get me wrong, I have been enjoying my CX-9 but will not replace it with the 2021 CX-9 when my 5 year down payment is paid off.
Normally I would agree with you but not in this case. The screen isn't angled where it's easy to scroll with your fingers plus the controls are very easy to use.
Touch screens must be low and close to be safe IMO. Like the new S Class or Kia. Touch screens should not be high. Yup, designers of the past 5 or 7 years have mostly messed up. Messed up big time.
@@lkae4 touchscreens make you take your eyes off the road. Mazda's infotainment control is easy to learn and use. Makes me keep looking at road ahead more than I would with a touchscreen. Moreover, you avoid fingerprints.
People think touchscreens are the best coz they’re convenient and works same as your tablet but in a vehicle where you’re eyes are really supposed to be focused on the road and not your “tablet” for obvious safety reasons, this rotary knob style controller is actually more intuitive. People complain without actually spending time to use it and simply just dismiss it. Besides, touchscreens are finger print magnets...just look at your tablet at home! Wouldn’t want that in my vehicle’s infotainment screen!
Mazda's are nice car's, there is only one thing i hate is the mount everest hamp in the second raw, behind the center console. All mazda line up they have this massive hamp it is annoying for the third passenger! Compare to their rivals out there, it's totally flat. And even their FWD, still massive hamp. There is no reason because no shaft to drive the rear wheels! Come on zoom zoom..
I review plenty of base trims. The good thing is, even on a higher trim like this, the driving impression doesn't change. Just some of the features are removed.
How is this engine middle of the pack? This engine is definitely the bottom of the pack, this thing would get steam-rolled by the V6s used by Honda, Toyota, Hyundai, Kia.... literally the whole segment is running on V6s and Mazda used this tiny engine and made it require premium fuel to get full HP.
No it would not get steam-rolled, the turbo torque makes up for it. Getting up to speed and passing is fine, just a little slower than some of the others in this class.
Really?! No auto start/stop? That thing is annoying! Automakers install that to improve their mpg to meet and improve CAFE standards besides that feature only improves by 1MPG w/c is insignificant! I had an Escape before with that feature and I always turned that off as it was annoying! Mazda doesn’t need that since they have the best CAFE in the industry (excl EV vehicles).
I would strongly recommend not buying a Mazda. We purchased a brand new Mazda CX9 and within 2 years had problems with a rough idle. Was told after second year it just needed new spark plug wires. Dealer could never recreate rough idle. 4 years later we took it in for an oil change and was told the cylinder head was leaking coolant.....Cylinder heads on back order for two months due to known problem of leaking. the only solution was either a refurbished engine or New engine from dealer. Warranty just expired but dealer and Mazda just says sorry either return your loaner car or replace the engine at your cost! Horrible experience......$4600.00 lesson learned. Please do yourself a favor and do not purchase a $40,000 car from Mazda only to have to purchase a $4600.00 engine in less than 4 years and trade in value now only $14,000 after new engine. NEVER again!
Sorry to hear about your experience. When I bought mine the dealership gave me a 10 yr/100,000 mile powertrain warranty (engine, transmission) as long as I serviced it at Mazda dealership, which I always plan on doing so
But one of the best parts of Mazda cars is the engine sound! Man! 🤣🤣. This guy is boring. People want a Mazda without engine sound, people want Mazda with engine sound. You can't have both. Get an electric car, then! To the point that even Mazda made their electric car to have engine sound through the stereo because people like it.

Back to this crappy parking lot eh?? I like to see a head to head comparo vs Toyota Corolla.
Why lol those are two completely different cars lol
Mazda's are nice car's, there is only one thing i hate is the mount everest hamp in the second raw, behind the center console. All mazda line up they have this massive hamp it is annoying for the third passenger! Compare to their rivals out there, it's totally flat. And even their FWD, still massive hamp. There is no reason because no shaft to drive the rear wheels! Come on zoom zoom..
I wish you guys would review less expensive trims sometimes! Not everybody can afford 40 and 50 thousand dollar cars!
I review plenty of base trims. The good thing is, even on a higher trim like this, the driving impression doesn't change. Just some of the features are removed.
Keep your hands on the wheel !,,,

WTF with the blank bottoms (plugs) on a freaking "Signature" model?
No matter how much you're gone pay, you still have to feel like a cheap bum
Yea weird right?
Omg those rims I hate them..
Tough to beat the ride quality of a Mazda in its price range. Too bad they rust so quickly.

@Dude Man i agree, it looks good and all but its just too underpowered with that 4 cylinder
No it would not get steam-rolled, the turbo torque makes up for it. Getting up to speed and passing is fine, just a little slower than some of the others in this class.
M8
Same old same old chasis
The should of never change the wheels. 2021 signature wheels are too plain.👎
I agree!
How do you know what the steering wheel feels like when you never hold it? Very dangerous driver
