Destroyed Two Crude Arcade PCB Resurrection: Extreme Arcade PCB Repair

- Here you can see an Two Crude arcade pcb that was basically nothing more than a pile of snapped off components and physically cracked on one side. The board was dead out of the bubble wrap, missing several parts, and for the most part, hopeless.

Approx 25 yrs ago I repaired a TV set from my sister-in-laws.
It was hit by water from a turned over flower pot on top of the set.
Part of EHT circuit was completely charred and some copper tracks were literally hanging in the air, a couple of them shorted out.
I managed to repair the pcb, replacing the tracks with insulated wires and cleaning/cutting away the charred chunk of pcb.
The TV set was working happily after that until they replaced it with a newer model.
I know what it takes: patience, patience, determination, perseverance and experience with electronics.

Someone probably smashed the arcade cabinet with a sledgehammer, and removed the board from it with the same precision tool.
Agreed. Or someone left it on a garage floor and drove over it?

Thanks. I would like to do something like that but picking up the camera, especially at night or when Im tinkering with stuff can be a bit tricky.
Camera and angles not interfearing with the work, getting a clear image, modifying sounds of grinders in the video etc requires a bit more work and time. Sometimes I dont have that time but maybe at some point I can do that at some point in the future though.

Greetings from Eastern Europe - Bulgaria. This was amazing job there! A couple of years I've resurrected a power amp board with smd chips and the boards was snapped on to pieces so i desoldered chips on the way and glued the PCB's with super glue and then repair traces with thin wires like you do, then solder back chips. Interestingly there was no snapped chips and no missing parts rather than some small pieces of the boards missing but the restoration was successfull and very similar to what you did here so i am happy to see people like you put their hearts into good cause. There are not many people who can/will do this. That is why i subscribed to you! Just keep doing this man!

@@lukemorse1 By the way i played this game when i was a kid so nostalgia get me too :) It always interested me whats inside arcade machine as well as outside and when the technicians opened one for repair i stared insides like kid in a candy shop. Now days you wont/hardly find one of those treasure mines ;)

This is a repair you should be proud of. You spent a lot of time with little expectation of payoff and luckily it worked. Great job!
Impressively solved repair job. There's a sort of irony attached to the way the game is of a post-apocalyptic cityscape devastated by destruction, and yet, simultaneously, the arcade board itself resembles a city driven to ruination by some likewise cataclysmic event. But then hope. _"From the ashes a new dawn rises"_ (and so on - that sort of thing). Does anybody else see this? Is this too deep for the comments-section?
For anyone concerned.
Regarding the mess of jumper wires for the traces on the bottom of the board. Once the board was confirmed working and fully functional, The jumper wires on the bottom of the board were trimmed and lined up as well as possible and then glued in place to avoid movement (even though the board is fixed to a piece of MDF).
As always your dedication to saving these things from the grave is incredible.

That game was amazing when I was young, ability to pick up stuff and people to throw was so fun.

@@lukemorse1 This is an amazing repair! The patience you have for fixing stuff is unbelievable. I've missed this kind of videos, like the old days when I first subscribed. I remember you fixing a NEO-GEO controller in a small closet (?) filled with consoles and stuff. Cozy it was I must say. I really enjoyed this one, as I said, old school Luke videos. Analyzing, explaining, fix the problem, come back and test. Really like that. I hope you do more of these but at the same time I can understand that it's very time-consuming.

Great work, thanks for sharing :) Glad that the custom chips weren't damaged.
Without wanting to sound pedantic: the "NF" parts next to the JAMMA edge are actually EMI filters (NF for "Noise Filter" maybe ?). In case you don't have any spare ones and only want to test the inputs on a board, you can bridge the 2 outer pins and leave the center one disconnected. There will be no more filtering obviously but it shouldn't be a problem if your JAMMA harness isn't 5 meters long :)

I mean I hate giving up on things, but if I had seen that, I think I would have called it FUBAR if it was still completely non functional after repairing traces and reflowing joints, you have the patience of a saint Luke, excellent work, I'm chuffed you uploaded another incremented PCB repair video, they always were my favourite.

Awesome video, great work on the rebuild, I would recommend a temp controlled heat gun to make reflow easier, also if you apply some heat to the pcb where its bent it should greatly lessen it

The two large custom chips labeled "55" are tilemap generators; I think that might be a good thing to try and recreate on an FPGA.

Basic electronics troubleshooting and repair. Trying to see how this is "extreme arcade repair". Maybe in an amateur hobbyist's eyes. Also to another user claiming "Not even fit for parts" inaccurate. In the end, glad to see it working again.

Wow, first thoughts seeing the board unwrapped are it spent some time outside in a scrap bin at some PCB reclamation company (Back in my day i used to work at one called Compuclaim, most of the day ripping MB's out of 086-286 PC compatibles for the copper and gold content). Probably fell off a pile and got run over by the forklift as well lol. Great work assuming you got it working (comments suggest so). The Shango066 of the computer era?
Oh and just to add, anything is repairable if you have enough time/money/skill & it's pleasing to see that being proven in practise rather than just theory.
