    I have a few boards where I will need to do this kind of repair (not just repairing traces, but removing components to troubleshoot the problem). Seeing it done gave me the confidence to attack it. Glad to see another PGM back in service!

    Dang. You should have earned a medal for fixing that board. Those traces are so dang small. I wish I was as good at repairing stuff as you. Again, good job.

    It's videos like these that are such a great boon to inexperienced people such as myself trying to repair our hardware, or just tinker in general. Great stuff, man.

    These kind of guides really help for someone who isn't super technical like myself, and will definitely be good support at some point in the future. :D

    Leaking batteries sure can make a mess. I have an Acorn A500 where the battery leaked over half the board. With help from my friend we have it working, but have some stability issues. If he gets frustrated I'll give it a go myself on the traces. Great video, the more of these I watch the more confidence I get on being able to do some of these repairs myself.

    Loved this vid. Great info on fixing traces here. I have a Mortal Kombat 1 board I need to pull back out that I bought non-working for $10 a year or so ago. I found several traces on the front of the board (close to each other) that were broken due to something being heavily scraped across the board at one spot. Such tiny traces I didn't think I could easily fix it, but after seeing your way of doing it, I think I can duplicate it. THANKS!

    You are the PGM man! Thanks to you i already managed to repair 2 of these boards. And i don't know nothing about electronics.
    Thanks again and keep up the good work.

    Great video! Very helpful! I have a multi trace scratch on a PCB which covers atleast 9 or 10 traces, at first I thought to use a line jump repair but the traces are so small. You have shown me the light, as I'm just a novice repair guy.
    Thank you! And I'll post back on my rework to let you know how it went.

    A note on flux: to make sure the residues are not conductive, use only rosin based flux. The worst it can do is to accumulate dirt / dust on the board. Most other fluxes are corrosive and/or conductive, and should not be used in electronics. ;-)

  • @latengocomoburro
    @latengocomoburro 5 лет назад +3

    You are correct with the methodology but wrong with the explanation. These "alkaline" batteries release a base, and you neutralize it with acid.

  • @TMS5100
    @TMS5100 11 лет назад

    for clean soldering, touch the iron to the trace and then the solder to the trace+iron. dabbing the solder to the iron and using the iron to transfer to the traces/pad oxidizes the solder too much.
    good solder reflows and solder joints will be smooth and shiny like a mirror.

  • @RetroRepair

    The batteries on these are far worse than the famous neo geo batteries.Every one I've had has had serious trace damage. Nice clean repair though and well done explaining the neutralization process :)

    I had the same problem a few weeks ago with my PGM mobo, lucky it was not that bad with the leaking batterie like yours. But still i had to clean it up and solder some of the traces too. :-)

    Leaky batteries on a pcb board its an nightmare. I've had to do a similar repair job on a remote controller for an old 1990s Sony TV. Someone left the batteries inside the remote and there was acid all over the PCB and everywhere.

    I accidentally put a somewhat deep scratch on the motherboard of my IBM PS/1 Model 2133-G53. Its deep enough to feel with your finger and is a large green mark. Will this affect the board at all? Its luckily not on any traces but I'm worried I might have just permanently broken it.

    Um, ya don't neutralize acid with acid. Besides, these batteries are alkaline; not acidic like a vehicle battery. Therefore, yeah, the lemon juice will at least partially neutralize the alkaline battery leakage. So you'll want to rerecord that part of the video or at least put a corrective annotation there. And you'll want to fix that in your title too.
