Talking Watches With Dan White

- If you pay any attention to what's going on in the world of magic, you've heard of Dan White - the magician in "The Magician At The Nomad," his long-running and always-packed show at New York's Nomad Hotel. If your idea of a magician is a paunchy guy in a rented tux and cheap cape, pulling disheveled-looking rabbits out of a battered top-hat, White has put together a show that will make you realize just how powerful magic can be, done right. Tall, with somewhat brooding features and a penetrating baritone voice, he's a commanding stage presence whose show has been one of New York's hottest tickets since March 2015 (his performances are routinely sold out) and whose stock in trade is narratively compelling, psychologically arresting, relatively close range work; he has a rare grasp of both great technical facility, and understanding of how to build and maintain drama.

Great interview. Nice to see someone with a great little collection that didn't cost $300K.
Nice modest collection from a guy who clearly respects each piece.
The 116500 is a stunner.
His collection is not the most exciting by Talking Watches standard, but he makes up for it with the rest.
"Watch"
[ moves his hand to the back of Jack's ear, and from there casually pulls out a *Patek Philppe Sky Moon Tourbillion* ]
Great TW. Finally a "normal" person 🤘
Love that IWC! It was great to see a collection that felt in reach. Of course I always enjoy seeing the $100,000 watches but this was a bit of fresh air!
Always nice to see a new episode of Talking watches!
Wish they were longer though. On average less than 15 minutes.
fully mechanical I agree
Very good episode! No ass kissing (by either party), no made up stories to sound like a real watch aficionado, and no traces of narcissistic personality disorder. We need more of these!
Mr. Clymer, for a few years now we have been asking you for talking watches with Ben Clymer (cool hunting video does not count); stop ignoring us and step up to the plate. Or perhaps a new series with staff showing off their watches and hipster accessories. “Staff reflections” or something you could call it. That ones for free. Now pull your finger out and get cracking!
On one podcast they said something interesting similar to that is in the works
I’ve loved magic and watches since childhood. This guy has a great temperament and a simple, yet thoughtful collection. Really enjoyed this episode.
That's so cool, his inspiration for his first watch (IWC Mark XV) was EXACTLY mine. Tom Cruise had it on during Vanilla Sky, and I got hooked and have that same watch.
Enjoyable presentation! Refreshing to see a no bull, no ass kissing, no make it up as you go guest. Good job!
Loved this. Great fun having the card tricks in with he collection was very interesting
Thanks, great video. A pleasure to see a more relatable collector with a nonetheless great collection. More of these please.
Lovely watches, great guy and great video! Thank you!
That Vanilla Sky clip was the exact same reason i got into quality watches.
me too !! I bought a Daniel Welington just after this movie :D
Vanilla Sky touched off my watch obsession as an adult too, but it was the earlier clip where the IWC was sitting with the deployant open on the couch. I had never seen a deployant clasp on a leather strap before, it just looked so cool sitting there, at that moment I was hooked. 15 years and so many pilot watches later, the obsession continues.
I agree, As soon as I seen it lying there with its clasp open & the cash in a money clip I did some research to see what it was all about,
The rest is history.😂
Great piece. I love my Mark.
Amazing taste. Absolutely love the Mark XV and Datejust.
Well done Jack. That was...wait for it......magical.
We need a Matt Farah Talking Watches episode. Rolex Kermit, IWC Big Pilot Perpetual, Grand Seiko GMT to name a few... very diverse collection that guy has.
This video led me to go to The Magician at the Nomad show...his watch collection is great, the show is mind-blowingly fantastic
Dan White is a good magician. Nice combination of being a magician and watch collector. The Pasha of Cartier is one of my favorite watch, I like the Rolex Submariner and Datejust.
nice meaningful collection, great episode
Great collection! Good episode!
Such an excellent episode.
Sophomore year in college, I purchased Vanilla Sky on DVD and fell in love with the same IWC.
Great vid. The Hodinkee guy was wearing a Grand Seiko. Wish he'd have shown it, curious which one... Ciao.
Excellent episode.
I think to coincide with the ten year anniversary, talking watches with Ben Clymer is a must.....and maybe Jack, oh and Cara.....but Ben is a no brainer, make it happen.....please!
What a humble guy!
this episode was very special... very very very special
That datejust is super nice. Nice video too!
Love the vids, great guest.
Great interview.... cool guys.
I totally agree with the majority of the commenters here: great episode! I ran into YT clips of Dan White and I have been binge watching his whole oeuvre over the last week or so and it brought me also here. I love watches, collect them myself as well, although different price-point. I committed to a certain period of a certain brand, American Swiss Jewish, which for some reason I loved their heritage, their origin and their design from that period. they are mid tier brand, official Swiss movements: Bulova. Similar to Tissot, in price range. There are only a few episodes in their history they actually had a Swiss center that developed their watches, I collect the Accutron series (not the movement) and love to wear them every day, and indeed ponder which to wear daily. It is also the only real accessory for men, other than tattoos ;-)
Great dude, simple, focused, and willing to do the work, and celebrate his success by acquiring a watch for the occasion. Love his magic too, very clean and absolutely great stage presence. Love everything about this guy! Loved the energy of the interview!
At 10:50 I think he puts the corner of the card under his watch
exactly... this trick was done before the under the watch thing
Awesome interview. Dan has a very good taste in watches.
Sharp dressed man, ladies and germs Mr. Jack 😎 in da house
Great episode! Keep Jack hosting
Nice collection and a good story behind most. Like the fact he has a bunch of watches in mind he wants to get, and he can most likely clearly get them at any time, but he wants to continue to give the watches he does have the wrist time they deserve and he deserves with them.. very well enjoyed, and just wait for the right occasion to get the next watch he's been wanting to celebrate an occassion.. doesn't just buy back to back to back as soon as he can just because he can.
It's an interesting approach to watch collecting I feel many of us, had we the money and opportunity to buy a dream watch, would just jump at asap. It's a smart and humble approach which maintains respect for the watches he does have and are special and really wear and enjoy them.
Time without a particular watch is almost as important as the time with a one.
Makes me rethink where I am in my own watch collecting.
i get this guy. rolex is also my favorite brand. a lot of ppl dislike rolex for some reason. i have a 1968 date and the new sub. both are awesome. hopefully one day i can get a rose gold olive green day-date. would also like to own a patek nautilus someday.
great episode
I like that he got into watches after seeing Tom Cruise's IWC in Vanilla Sky. I got into watches after seeing Arnie's Seiko in Commando, and Keanu's G-Shock 5600 in Speed.
What an interesting chap.
IWC beautiful simplicity 👌
Great wall posters!
GMT Master and Ceramic Daytona. The guy has good taste.
Agreed. Most collection has a GMT Master in it but this is the first one I see who didn't go for the Pepsi or Batman. I always think the black on black is the most handsome piece; very refined and understated.
With its look the Cartier Pasha is a really fitting watch for a magician, never thought of it until now...
This was so cool!
Love Vanilla Sky great movie!
We want talking watches weekly !
Great episode with nice insights despite the ROWLECKS
What watch is Jack wearing? More videos of him, please! Such a charming presence.
thought it was dana white haha
Stepphen LoL! that’s exactly what I thought too. What a let down.
Glad it wasn’t.
I imagine Dana White as a Hublot type of guy.
TCX Choi
I was thinking more Paneria and Richard Mille.
yeap all the douchey brands... HUBLOT PANERAI FULL GOLD ROLEX ICED AF AND MAYBE AN AP
His stories and watches pre-Rolex are more interesting and seem to tell you more about him as a person. I love that IWC MXV and the Cartier Pasha is another super interesting choice and somehow fits the idea of a "magician's watch" in my mind. I never liked that watch for me, but I love it for him. Sometimes a watch makes sense for some people and not for others. When he talks about a Speedy or Tudor GMT for his next watch, it almost feels like he is moving from great personal choice 'end-game' pieces to more generic and less interesting watch collector 'must-haves'. Cool guy though.
Respect for magician.
great episode. The guy just loves watches
Awesome!
I had never heard of this gentleman before but man he is good! He reminds me of the magicians of old, a lot of mystery and wonder.
I love his explanations for his watches as well. I know they are the usual suspects but with this person that does not matter as he is so understated he imbues a class to them. When he gets the Day Date ( my grail also since the age of 13, I’m 54 now) I just know it will look more like an old school captain of industry feeling on his wrist rather than Miami Drug dealer or car dealership owner!
I think that’s one of the beauties of Rolex, the same watch can feel totally different in the minds eye to the observer from low life hustler where it just looks tacky to statesmen where it looks classy. And lastly, let’s not forget Hodinkee’s own diamond, Jack!
Honestly, if Jack was not there I would never go to Hodinkee!
Another Jin man- this one with a penchant for watches!
What is the Ref # on the Date? I LOVE the numbers in there!
Awesome show
this was so fun
He says simple datejust but that vinyl looking dial and the red date is quite unique looking.
"Watch..."
"Uh huh"
"Watch"
"..."
"Your watch"
"Yeah"
"Under your watch"
"Oh"
Very relatable episode
That second trix is totaly amazing in two levels:
1) he never tuch the card.
2) he pic it from the deck.
Wow that was crazy. How the hell can you cheat that. To do either of it would be magical.
enjoyed this episode. thank you. very cool guy
I love how all his dials are black.........mysterious.....
I’ve noticed that in a lot of the episodes the dates on watches show 23, why?
You post, I like :)
Great collection!
Nice angle Z magic trick by DM
Dan is Cool 😎
How many cameras is this interview utilizing?
Talking Watches with Ben Clymer when's it happening?
When Rolex increase the supply of steel sports watches. ...never 🤦♂️
I’ve been asking this for years.
Woooah you can't just switch up hosts like dat
FINALLY A TALKING WATCHES WITH JACK
How did Dan get the ripped card edge under the white?
His Rolex collection is awesome.
Is he in the Magicians Allicance?
Nice episode.
When does "the average Joe" enthusiast TALKING WATCHES Edition come?
I do volunteer. 😉
@daniels_watches on IG.
Nice one, @hodinkee. The IWC was my favorite of the bunch. Great back story.
Awesome magic, too.
Cheers from Germany
A collection that reflects most of the collectors.
Pretty sure theres a chip on the ceramic bezel next to the 85 on the Daytona
Jack has on two watches!
That datejust is my grail
Is it just me or does the audio recording cut off as fast as nobody is talking? Think it would sound better if it would be recording constantly
Otherwise very nice video, didn’t want to be rude or anything. Really like your content!
I think Jack just got sick of listening to this guy go on about his blingy tacky and totally devoid of any class whatsoever Rolex watches. And I for one don't blame him. Did you catch some of his expressions? lol
Does Rolex make that Date Just in a 41mm? Or only 36mm?
“The magician takes the ordinary something and makes it do something extraordinary. Now you're looking for the secret... but you wont find it, because of course you're not really looking. You don't really want to know...
"You want to be fooled.”
I love watches and, like many people, the fascination begun when I was a kid. I think a watch choice should speak of who you are, how you live your life, your personality. To that end I am mystified that so many people automatically defer to Rolex. Sure, their pedigree is unquestionable, but they're everywhere. There are so many other great brands of watch to be had, so many new start ups and micro brands making watches with beautiful design language. I will always seek to find something true to who I am, and not just follow the pack. By and large this kind of mentality is woefully missing from the horological community.
Are you sure you're not just sniffing your farts over how unique you think your tastes are? It kinda sounds like that's the case.
2deep5u Er, no. Was just saying that I find it strange that a lot of people who buy watches will only buy from a couple of manufacturers. Nothing to do with sniffing or farting, sorry for the confusion.
Alright, it's just that I saw this exact notion over like dozens of videos relating to watches, where people think that because reddit told them that Omega Speedmasters, surface-finished A. Langes, and Grand Seikos that are almost as thick as a ROO are the pinnacle of haute horlogerie, they think they're just so much superior to the "plebeian masses" who like Rolex and Patek more.
unless he slipped the corner of that card under the watch while their hands were under the table, i don't see when he would have been able to do it. That card was always ripped though, you can tell he's trying to struggle with tearing the card, but he's really just scratching the edges of the card to make a sound and making the guy listen so he can't see that he's not actually doing anything
Anyone else just wanting Jack's GS?
Which one is it.

Thanks for sharing. Stunning piece. Recently got the peacock .just mesmerising . GS only if people knew.
Fairly sure it's an sbgh267 actually
Tom I thought I'd be the first to ID it! Pretty sure SBGH267 as well. :)
Nicest guy in the world
The only watch I want to know about is the interviewer's watch! 😂😂
Grand Seiko is chic, baby.
I'm starting to think this is not UFC president.
Make a talking watches with paul feig
I’m pretty sure that last trick was done first before the watch trick 🤨 hmmm
You have to respect a guy who can, apparently, read your mind.
Heres how the trick works..
The ripped corner was already ripped and most likely placed under the watch before filming began....
He forced him to choose the card he wanted him to choose. Notice how he never actually shows the card intact...hi hand is always covering the corner hence why it was already ripped. He had another card behind it and ripped that so it sounded as if he was ripping it then and there.
Then a bit of showman ship before the reveal...voila..you have the card under the watch
Don White has custom cards made my a card company and is as cool as Mechanical watches
