What you said about Travis using production and aesthetic to make his music feel like high art whilst the writing stays generic is so true and I think that makes it best. viewed as a soundscape.

Fr James Blake is slept on
I often felt that crossfading tracks and looping beats together was a cheat code for cohesion and on this album I'm super impressed he strayed from that and decided to create all original diverse songs that somehow all fit within the same soundstage. I feel like the song SKITZO is a testament to the album itself.
I think this album is his best work since Rodeo.
are you on drugs? This album is very bloated with arbitrary features, it's eclectic aka all over the place, his lyrics aren't saying anything truly meaningful or poignant, probably because Travis Scott doesn't have anything to say.
The world we live in today is basically a dystopic nightmare where brands and corporations have more power than governments.
I think if Travis truly cared he would have waited 5 years before releasing new music. But instead we get a rushed trash of an album as a way to thumb his nose at everyone. He seems super arrogant, impatient and more concerned with staying relevant and cool than actually creating anything with substance. I'm starting to think Travis Scott's audience are a bunch of 13 year old suburban white boys. 😢 In my opinion I think the album deserves a 5 not a 7. Skitzo is a 10/10 song. The first 3 minutes sounds like a perfect song on its own. It randomly switches around to some extremely hard beats. He matches them immaculately with his flows. I’m not worried about whether or not it sounds cohesive. It sounds unpredictable but FIRE. Love that song.

Hyaena starts with a sample of Proclamation by English prog legends Gentle Giant, those are the lyrics you're referencing at 4:46. It's taken from a critically acclaimed concept album about the corruption of power. Just wanted to stress, they're not Travis' lyrics and make way more sense in the context they were sampled from.
I can't believe he missed that. The Power and The Glory is a classic prog record too, I'm surprised he didn't know about it, or if he did, mention it.
Anthony missing critical information? Shocker! The use of the sample was awful though. Didnt make a lot of sense and he sounded ugly being harmonized
Sounded like Jonah Hill doing slam poetry in 22 Jump Street
@unknown6390 yeah considering how musical it sounded in the original, this felt like they tacked it on the front of a song and it's more like stealing than sampling. Gentle Giant has been sampled by a lot by hip hop artists including on "Strange Ways" by Madvillain. Difference is they did it well whereas Travis did not.

The beginning of hyena the first track of the album is actually took out from a song called proclamation on The power and the glory. An album from gentle giant a prog rock band in the 70s and its pretty crazy how i would have never imagined travis listening to that kind of music. I guess inspiration comes from everywhere and everyone
that shit sounds so trash. the vocals and the melody is garbage. it’s like he purposely put it in to make people uncomfortable lol. the melody is terrible and dissonant
Anthony dissected that whole bar too. Like it was just a cool sounding sample 😭
Travis is absolutely a musical scholar, he likes Bjork and shit. Sometimes I'd like for those nerdier roots to show more in his music, but for what it's worth I'm still happy with this project.
The Maggot Brain sample at the end of Hyaena was also pretty cool.
Did he make the beat tho?
He probably didn’t listen to that it was prob one of his producers
i think utopia is a step ahead of astroworld, it has low points but the continuous switch of sound in the album gives a hyper original and very high level tone to the album
It’s far more consistent than Astroworld, but doesn’t quite reach the same heights imo
@@theegreenoneI'd say that Astroworld had higher highs, but Utopia has higher lows. Nothing on it is WHO? WHAT? or YOSEMITE levels of "meh" for me. I think it's way too early to say if Utopia is better or worse than Astro, I think we need a lot more time to ruminate

Blud trying to be Frank ocean
That's my favorite! I think it's one of the most brilliant songs he's ever released. The features and new "flavor" to Travis' performance really heightens his credibility as a "psychedelic trap" artist, and the beat switch at the end is a satisfying payoff laced with a cool flow that takes me back to the feeling of listening to a Rodeo track like "90210".
@@schlalomeonyuxin7492it does have production from vegyn who did a lot in blonde and recent frocean stuff
Have to say I agree. There's definitely some low points; however, Travis could of easily made a trap-heavy album following the success of Astroworld, and yet choose to deliberately make an experimental album that felt more true to his vision rather than the expectation of fans. Say what you want, but that takes courage.
You would’ve gave it a 10 if it was called Tea Time & it was just Aubrey talking about Vegan cookies ☕️🫖
😂 😂 😂 😂
there’s still a few songs i don’t really like that much, but the sound is more unique than astroworld which i like. i still wish lost forever still had the original beat all the way through and the longer intro that the fashion show version had
I was thinking that when I first heard the album version of Lost Forever, but I think the best switch fits way way better now, but I do love the first beat but it really never fit well for the dudes flow.
i disagree… i do wish that they let the sample play in the beginning without travis’s vocals over top like they did in the leak, but the 2nd beat of the song is one of my favorites on the whole album. sounds AMAZING in the car
I love how Anthony acknowledged Travis timeless past works like Rodeo and rated the album 7/10 over the potential there was on UTOPIA, personally If I reviewed this album I would've rated it a light 6 because it didint give a generic outlook like Birds in The Trap or even Astroworld, so it was a dissapointing album with terrible mixing compared to the previous works he has produced, really sad the stans or fans are praising it while he could've done perfect in the 5 year period of time.

Fan theory: Does it seem to anyone else that Travis organized Utopia in a three-act structure?
The first third (tracks 1-6): Have an introductory feel. My Eyes sets the emotional landscape and God’s Country paints a picture of the societal landscape.
The center third (tracks 7-12): Meltdown and the next five tracks go much harder and feel like they’re committing to heart of the album and it’s themes and conflicts.
Parasail, as the two-thirds point of the project, is a reflective interlude serving as the turning point or climax.
The final third (tracks 14-19): Have a descending feel with slightly sparser production. Lost Forever in particular has a more subdued feel sonically and lyrically. Telekinesis is the perfect finale and Til Further Notice is the outdo and roll credits.
Just a thought… Like Fantano said, Travis’ greater skill is as an orchestrator and framer of projects. The project is trying to be immersive and convey a cinematic type of aura.
I agree and it makes sense considering he released a movie to go with the album
gods country is the worst song of the album
The opening song is literally one of the hardest songs on there. The drum break makes it easy
In some ways, Utopia really does feel like the true follow-up to Rodeo, not just with the album cover but the nocturnal feel as well. Something feels missing at times with a few tracks not fitting going for a more commercial feel, but still really good overall.
Modern Jam was nuts, Teezo had a really cool inflection that reminded me of how Andre 3000 would sing almost. But the backdrop was anything but cheerful on Modern Jam. Super sinister, super futuristic. It was fantastic. I also might like Meltdown more as a Travis and Drake Song over Sicko Mode because I LOVED the way Drake rapped on it. Super gritty, petty, and to the point. A lot like the verses on IYRTITL. Other tracks that were also great were the opening track HYAENA, THANK GOD, AND FE!N
Was really impressed with this album, and it felt like a return to form for a darker Travis. And a true successor to the Rodeo era. Which is my personal fav, and before it even released, I was super hopeful and excited because I had a feeling based on the cover art. It's probably my second favorite Travis album. My first being Rodeo of course, but it really feels like this could go toe to toe in terms of mood and album standouts.

i like this project a lot for the risks it takes, even if not all of them succeed. id love to hear travis come into some more personal topics lyrically like he did on rodeo on the next record. i also hope the next record comes at a time where a kanye feature is more appropriate , if it ever will be
One of the things holding Travis back from being on Kanye’s level is the lack of personality or emotional performances like a Jesus Lord, Come to life, Family Business, Bound 2, or Hey Mama. That and also Kanye is probably a bit more forward thinking. There was a bit of forward thinking and uniqueness found in tracks like Lost Forever, Hyaena, and My Eyes, but a decent portion of the album is definitely Kanye “inspired.”
@@DonovanGG__ i agree i think kanye overall has more inspiration and things to write about then travis atm. i think trav will come into some type of focus, or maybe something significant will happen to him personally that will give him the kanye inspiration
@@samellsworth9498 I also forgot to mention I think Modern Jam is pretty forward thinking and risky, it takes an old school beat and flow, and adds very modern musical elements to it (hence the name Modern Jam) and the structure (or lack of structure) of the song is very weird but I really like it.
@samellsworth9498 what more could happen to him though? I wouldn't expect him to talk about his rise to stardom because that was already touched upon in rodeo. The astrofest tragedy happened (yea I know he briefly talked about it), he's had issues with Kylie, and he's raised a daughter. But he didn't really discuss these things - and it's fine with me if he doesn't wanna get personal. But in that case he could've at least described the concept of a "utopia" or better explained what utopia meant to him in the album. There could've been more of a narrative lyrically speaking.
even though it sounds like im shitting on travis I really like this project. It's just that if he already has great production, great vision, and a ton of resources, why not improve your lyrics and take your music to the next level?

Glad to know the Playboi Carti feature is what made this album better than MBDTF Melon 👍
There are some truly great songs on this album like: My Eyes (which is beautiful), I Know?, Parasail, Thank God, Telekinesis, Circus Maximus, Hyaena, and Meltdown.

Crazy how you only gave LOST FOREVER a passing mention. Undoubtedly one of Travis' best songs in his entire discography in my opinion
“Westside Gun” completely ruined that song. His verse was annoying and overall atrocious and he somehow managed to ruin a 10/10 production
@@liavberman8226Top tier waffling, keep it up
westside gunn ruined it and the leak is way better, shouldve been a solo travis song

Yeah, he could have stretched it out there. Maybe he was too tired to talk about it or just wanted to finish the review but yeah would have wanted more hype around that track
Anthony, you can’t just give this album a 7 because you opened up that window and let out the antidote.
Anthony, please, Utopia literally means a perfect place, how can you give a concept designed to be perfect a 7/10. You really can't never be satisfied, you'll always want more.
Can’t believe u didn’t talk about the last part of my eyes, good rapping and the most emotional lyrics on the album, touching on the Astro world tragedy
Brave of fantano to call Yung Lean a "legendary soundcloud rapper" even though his first review was him waving his bread hands for a whole minute...
This album is so interesting in that it’s more than the sum of its parts. The consistent production feel and vocal performances go a long way in creating an atmosphere that really lends itself to a good album experience, even if I’m not taking a lot of songs by themselves from this project. Don’t see a lot of album focused experiences from big time artists, shout-out to Travis for that.
Wow, this is the FIRST time that Fantano gave an album a perfect 1 while not wearing a shirt. Inspiring!
3 months later, I don’t see anybody talk about this record, which is insane to me. I’m not a fan, but I expected it to have a bit more of a shelf life.
Deserved 12/10 Fantano, your ratings have evolved in such a good way
I stand by, if this was written as good as it was produced, it'd be a 10/10
Glad Anthony was able to hear our hidden feature!!
OMG ITS THE ORDINARYISH PEOPLE AKA AJRMY
I agree with so much of what you said. Glad you kept level and have a realistic review. Almost all of the other reviews I’ve watched are nonstop praise and how great everything is. There def are high points and low points in this album and you did a great job alluding to that.
I'm not really a critical music listener , if there is genuine substance I appreciate it and it matters but if there's just an energy to the rapping or vocals that (feels) urgent and substantive then that works for me just as well. So Travis is totally the type of artist that fits the way I listen to music, mostly for ear candy, vibes and energy. Fantano definitely has fair criticism here that I can understand although not all of his issues with Utopia were issues for me and my personal enjoyment is closer to a 9 and AOTY.
@mrguaco I just subscribed. Your writing and flow is great. Keep going you definitely have something with your talent 👌
If it was named "To Pimp a Utopia" you would gave it a strong 10/10

Despite being a huge Fan, this Album thankfully surprised me in the most important way: It sounded and felt fresh/new from Travis which is something I did not exepect after hearing K-pop which i also really dislike ontop of sounding generic to me. Yes, Utopia has some obivious influences/inspirations, but besides a couple songs that dont fit my personal preference, this album is very solid and worth the wait for me. What are some of your favorites so far guys?
Really enjoying thank god right now 🔥
currently my favorite is lost forever, mainly with the alchemist production and westside gunn feature, although travis’ verse was pretty solid too. love the dark feel of the song, along with majority of the tracks throughout the album
I love Sirens, when the vocal chops start to sped up and suddenly the beat switchin up too and it's a whole another mood with smooth af synth keys. I think that's a moment where the album really shines, it's really well tought out.
travis last verse on my eyes might be one of my fav verses from him ever imo
@@jacktreibel7168 same, I thought I might be overreacting at first, but the more I listen to it the more I am amazed how good I feels and flows
I think you said it perfectly when you said “ there is little momentum from section to section” because that’s exactly how I felt listening to this album it plays to me more like Travis‘s scrap bin as opposed to his traditional IMAX presented albums like you describe
I personally give it a 9/10… some of Travis’s best verses of his entire career, and I have been listening since Owl Pharaoh. There were some moments where I wish he did more with the built up momentum and just blew us away like he said in the review but overall I really give Travis credit, there is so much interesting production and sound that it’s worth listening to again and again
Some of his best verses? Just interested as to which verses you feel are up there as some of the best?
@@danjohnson9495 My Eyes 2. Part, I Know, Til further notice
i've heard that a certain amount of people are saying that is a bad album, this and that but i just can say that is a really good album, it has bangers and others songs that develop the album as UTOPIA
People just want TikTok song clips. It’s annoying
Doesn’t have good lyrics or a message tho so I don’t like it.
My Eyes has actual depth if you understand what the perspective is. Looking back thru Travis previous work aswell as his public life and events(the concert💀) the track transforms into something special, its a diamond in the Album and in my opinion overall Utopia is better than Astroworld and is deserving of atleast an 8.5/10.
I agree with fanatano’s rating because of albums of the 8 and above caliber most of those albums have a lot of lyrical substance on the majority of the album. Although the production is amazing and Travis does have probably his best rap performance on an album ever I don’t think it’s above a 7.5. Most of the lyrics aren’t that good.
Its surface level stuff on my eyes but still a banger track i would give the album a light 8 maybe
Hopping on to remind people that the opening lyrics are from the band Gentle Giant, and the album they come from (the Power and the Glory) turns 50 years old today, go check it out
Also, I am definitely glad that Melon had said that Drake needs to stop being “obsessed” with a beef with Pusha T that he had backed out of
Makes for some great lines. Who cares
Sound like the opposite tbh. Can’t be mad at rappers trying to be competitive with each other.
@@sheikhhussain3145 Well I thought that Drake’s fans care. I remember that one of his fans said that it was better that Drake disses Kanye West instead of Pusha T because they didn’t want Pusha T to get anymore attention. They were saying that because I was saying something about that Drake song Search and Rescue. He was dissing Kanye by using Kim’s voice on the song. And I had told them that Pusha T said that when Drake disses Kanye West, he wins because he knows that Drake isn’t strong enough to come after him
@@samswag777 That’s not competition. Drake is still mad at Pusha T because he had won the beef between them. And that’s what Anthony Fantano and I were talking about
@@andresciahooten9598 yeah and rap isn’t the Super Bowl their isn’t just one defining moment of victory then everyone can move on and restart as if nothing happened drake can continue to diss Pusha until he’s 80 or vise versa. Shit jay z literally did the same thing with nas after ether and dissed him in random songs for like the next 5 years after nas “won” the beef. Seems as if drake actually left a good verse on a great album and instead of admitting it people just wanna try say well it’s too late now which just reads as fear from my perspective

Super excited for this review. I'll preface my reaction to Melon's review with the following details. Big Travis fan. I'd rank his albums up until this point 1) Rodeo, 2) Astroworld, 3) Birds. After extensive listening of the album, this is how I'd rank the album in terms of my fave / least fave songs.
Top 7 Songs: Sirens, LOOOVE, (gap), Modern Jam, Hyaena, Thank God, My Eyes, I Know?
Bottom 7 Songs: Topia Twins, Lost Forever, (gap) K-pop, Parasail, God's Country, Skitzo, Telekinesis
The 5 not listed (Meltdown, Delresto, Fe!n, Circus Maximus, 'Til Further Notice) have things I like and dislike about all of them. All in all, I'd rate the album a decent 7. Now to listen to the review.
First 2 1/2 minutes dedicated to 2021 tragedy, fair enough, this is the first time non-diehards hearing Anthony talk on Travis, since Astroworld, I get it.

5:19 - yes. I don't come to Travis for lyrics. Vibes only
7:00 - 100% fair to clown those lyrics lmao, Teezo feature is STELLAR
9:22 - Melon's Perry the Platypus impersonation
10:24 - Yea I don't get the insane love for Fe!n either tbh
13:52 - I don't feel like Travis has had good "long" songs (post-4min) post-Rodeo outside of Sicko Mode tbh
17:45 - ayyyyyyy a strong 7, that's even higher than me. Melon lives to see another day.

I know is the best song of the album... chilled, to the point and does not try too much, plus the hook will be incredible live when everyone is singing it. I feel that Travis's albums can only be graded post live performances as AstroWorld blew up after the videos of the live performances started bubbling online. Strong effort overall and i believe ill be listening to around 7-8 songs post album hype
I know is my fave too. Simple good Travis song! I love Travis work for many years but even I can’t enjoy the over produced songs that much.
Dude why would you even give this guy the exposure, he is responsible for ten people dying and that shouldn't be forgotten
ok and? everyone dies.
It wasn't all his fault. The limit for the concert was 50,000 people, nearly 100,00 people showed up. People that were there have stated he stopped the concert about 3 times to see if people were ok but that doesn't get mentioned in the media. Its a very horrible and heartbreaking situation and While he could've have definitely acted on it better its not like he purposely did it.

Telekinesis is definitely the best track, that sza feature goes crazy
This albums really interesting. I’ve gone back and listened to rodeo and birds in the trap, and there’s just something messy and not as “in sync” as this album. As high as some of the highs are for his earlier work, the dead spots are far too decayed for me now. While with this album, when I’m on the road, even though I really only go to a handful of tracks to get in the zone with, whenever I start Hyaena, I really have a hard time not listening to the entire thing from front to back, and considering Hyaena is one of those tracks I go to for a quick pick up, the whole entire album is simply a cut above from the rest of his work. I’d personally switch the scores for Utopia and Rodeo, and since the lowkey melancholy sound utopia gives is something I’m personally attracted to, I’d really be closer to a 9 for it. I think this album is really going to age well
Fantano completely missed the vibe of PARASAIL, such a shame!
funny to hear fantano say Delresto feels like a leftover from renaissance, bc first time I listened to it, my first thought was "oh beyonce recorded this w travis for renaissance, discarded it and travis picked it up and produced the track"
personally loved the album, definitely here for it. when i actually first listened to hyaeana the minute those instrumentals kicked on i knew i would love it. 🖤
