Lovely! I have a Hardy Penwrights pen with the magnificent, evocative Middle Earth resin, which demands a gold nib . . . to no avail, as its Jowo steel No 6 nib it came with writes so well that I simply won't replace it. Mine never runs dry. So good for you for getting the nib you got. And, such a well crafted pen! Thank you for this review.

Thanks for this review and your recient review of Pierre’s Dumka. Both great pens by a master craftsman. I have been wanting one of Pierre’s pens for some time now, so bring on Soubrique/Dumka shoot out to help me decide. My wife and I met Pierre. some years ago at a pre-pandemic Chicago Pelikan Hub. Pierre sat across the table from us and it was an evening of very engaging and enjoyable conversation. Anytime you and Pierre can arrange another live video chat like you did a few years ago, I would love to see it.

Someone accused Desiderata of stealing the design of the Edison Menlo and overcharging for it.
That person DELETED their comment after I posted the following response:
"Would you be kind enough to get a current price quote from Mr. Gray and give me a call to discuss the matter? I designed that pen from the ground up in 2015 with each feature to address a particular constraint of either function or practicality, and that shape was what I thought was correct.
I'm not looking over anyone else's shoulders for design tips.
First rule of being: Be yourself; You'll never be as good as anyone else. Just be yourself. PS: I made that filling mechanism myself from Grade 5 titanium shaft, acetal and GRIT. And, full disclosure, I farmed out the spring because, while I might be crazy, I'm not stupid. (Thanks, Joe Morton.)"

Have always admired Pierre's work, and I can understand the pricing structure as you get a great product from someone who enjoys what he does.

I'm not usually a fan of the white swirl resins but the mix of the amber, brown and white is really nice.

I’m another very happy Soubriquet owner. It’s my favourite pen! I’ve got one in cocobolo with the screw piston filler which is also very good. I’ve put an FPR gold ultra flex nib in mine so I’m yet to try the zebra g that came with it.

Beautiful pen. Love the shape. Refined, as you say.

I concur with your praise of the Soubriquet. I appreciate mine very much.

I own the eucalyptus burl version and its my daily driver. Ive tried many different nib options as is the benefit of a jowo#6 screw in section (currently fitted with a sailor ef 21k adapter)
Also the zebra g housing that Pierre makes is perhaps the best I've used out of all my zebra g fountain pens.

👍👍Couldn't agree more! I currently have two Soubriquets in my rotation: the "Cool Mint Water" and "Moonstone Water" with fine and extra fine nibs, respectively. Pierre is an amazing craftsman. The nibs were perfectly tuned, too ... both great writers! The antique amber wasn't available when I made my purchase, or I would have all three! Cheers! Oh yeah, Pierre, if you're watching; I have the "Cool Mint Water" inked with Waterman "Harmonious Green" and the "Moonstone Water" inked with Pilot Iroshizuku "kiri-same" 😁

I have a sobriquet in cocobolo (with ebonite section), most comfortable pen I’ve ever used

Another nice and informative video… Since similar price range, would u prefer Soubriquet or Opus 88??

Gorgeous, captivating beauty. How does Pierre do it. It should have a gold coated nib. I love flex nibs. I’d use a vibrant Monteverde mandarin orange. Can you get a stub?

Lovely acryic. I would have thought SBRE Brown ink would have been an obviously good match.

Trying too hard to praise an inordinately expensive pen that does not write. I mean I get the maker is a friend of yours, but try to maintain SOME objectivity. I have seen the same filling mechanism in pens that cost 1/10th the price; same for the material. And Ranga makes a turned pen that looks a lot like this and actually writes at 1/5th of the price.

Did you, though? Who else is lapping their barrels for a smooth fit of an X-ring that holds a seal while still sliding smoothly under the power of a spring that's easy to depress? You will always have the right to repair a Pump Piston Soubriquet because the seal is a simple X-ring. No complex, hard to source bespoke "seal". And this pen was made by me in America, so the prices are higher than what they need to charge in other countries.
For crying out loud, I was at the grocery store last week and a box of Creamette pasta was $2 ON SALE.
      Creamette!
Yeah, it's expensive to exist in this country, and it's expensive to make stuff here too. I'm doing the best I can. I know you don't think this pen is worth it, but the guy who made it isn't out to gouge you.
