The Future Of Ann Demeulemeester Without Sebastien Meunier

- After 7 years at the head of the collections and 10 years in total at the Belgian company Ann Demeulemeester, Sébastien Meunier is stepping down. In 2013, he succeeded the founder of the eponymous house founded in 1985 as creative director. When Ann Demeulemeester left her brand in 2013 to pursue other projects, Meunier had benefited from three years of direct training from the House’s founder. According to WWD, his collections received “largely positive reviews for honoring the romantic spirit and exacting tailoring” the brand is known for.
Ann Demeulemeester’s latest project sees a collaboration with Belgian homeware company Serax, for which she designed a range of glassware, tableware and lighting.
A successor to the post has not yet been named.

Thanks for the feature bro. I am absolutely heartbroken that Meunier's tale has been cut short so early: he deserved so much more than this.
For those out of the loop, the official Instagram account has also stopped following Meunier at this point, which suggests that this was not necessarily a decision that he would have wanted to make.
All things being said, I am looking forward to seeing where he moves to following this situation. After a decade at Margiela and another decade at Ann Demeulemester, he is a capable designer who I hope is picked up by another house fairly quickly.
Not only that but Sebastian's latest IG post has an emoji of a white flag in the description, kind of alluding to him surrendering in a way. I'm terrified of the brand's future. This straight up sucks
I’m really scared about the future of the brand. Like really really really scared.
Can't take a man serious with tangled earphones bruh😂
@@ntsakomathebula4840 🤣🤣 Spotted em after I had recorded the one take and was like "ahh fuck it, not doing another one"
CptSamurai yeah it just hit me how sad the whole thing really is, how important creating art is to a designer, and how much it could all be possibly ruined. I hope for the best for him and the brand as well.

Hahaha it’s my fault for never sleeping
All the Old fashion iconic houses that did not adapt to a streetwear are now closing shops😢
😢🤦🏿♂️
@GiGi Ali........... Which ones?................ imbecile.
Didnt Margiela say he isnt done with fashion yet? Imagine him at Ann D
That would be amazing but there’s a 0.00000001% chance of that happening
Rick Owens/Ann.D/H.Ackerman era are long gone. They have made it in 2000’s but time has change now. The target market are older market and fashion student.
The 90’s - 2000 era were the best fashion moment in my opinion.
Rick Owens, Martin Margiela, Comme des Garcons, Ann. D, Givenchy under Riccardo Tisci, Balenciaga under Nicolas, Chanel by Karl Lagerfeld, The rise of Acne Jeans, Lanvin under Alber Elbaz and many more. You can not compare these legends with the designers from 2020.
Thank you for this great video! It's always lovely to hear people speak about Antwerp and the city's creative geniuses. I'm from Antwerp myself and I live two blocks away from the Ann Demeulemeester's flagship store. It would be loevely to meet you one day. Cheers
omg honestly perfect timing at 2am to chill & watch
I felt that way about Margiela being taken over by Galliano. But he made it happen wonderfully. Not perfectly. But it works. As to footwear, you just need a good team with a creative head who knows how to say "yes" or "no" correctly. But I understand your fears. But it's inevitable that designers change at Houses we love. They may decide to hire from within, like at Gucci, which worked out super well. But if they try and make Ann D. into another hypebeast brand with $400 tee shirts...yikes. That's going to hurt
I’m really hoping whatever they do, they don’t completely destroy the brand
@@FashionRoadman Agreed. But nowadays, everything is so sketch. As you mentioned with Lang and one can see what happened to Jil Sander and Celine.
I would love to see AF Vandervorst at Ann Demeulemeester, or even Martin Margiela. But unfortunately that would just be a dream, with the news of the New Guards acquisition :/
This man got me waking up at 2am to watch fashion videos......................... I like that 👌🏾
Isabel Benenato was also one of the first designers i though about for a good choice in terms of aesthetic, like sheer fabrics, deconstructed blazers etc. But as much as we all want that to happen i think Antonioli will just play it as save as it possible could be and rerelease old stuff or hier a well known designer to make their money that they payed for the brand back. Im going to Antwerp tomorrow trying to get my hands on a few Munier Ann D pieces from his last collections :(
For me, my favorite collections of Ann D were from spring 1997 up to her fall 2000 collection. Why? This is when she started exploring on draping plus when you actually analyze those collections, they were based on the rectangle, draped in different ways, draped with different fabrics and basically the height of deconstruction. When she did spring 2001, she has already moved forward with draping and created collections that are already too dark. At least in those years, she infused her collections with colors.
Worst news I've heard in a while, I wonder if anyone can even take over after Meunier
I’m not sure anyone can but let’s see what the future holds
You always do a good job mans cheers
Been looking forward to hearing your thoughts on this since the announcement !
I love her esthetic. I have a jacket by Ann D. I purchased on The Real Real. It is the best!!!!
great video mate! learned a lot about the demeulemeester scene backstage, I hope they're financial situation doesn't get in the way of their vision too much. I've just checked out their newest 2021 spring digital collection, and so far it doesn't seem to have swayed too far off the AD dna, feels a bit more nostalgic and gothic compared to the romantic style that I'm used to, and I absolutely love. I'm excited for what they have in store, and scared at the same time. It'd be a shame to see such a beautiful, poetic fashion house wrap up in any way at all.
Interesting content. I feel sad to have missed much not subscribing to this channel early.
That said, I really respect HA, but I doubt if he will be able to be cohesive with the ideology of the house of AD. But will also be nice to see the direction they take next.
Benenato would be a great fit rn at Ann D as the creative director replacement. Although he left, I would love to see Meunier at another big fashion house somewhere, preferrably a Parisian brand.
Also it is quite sad that things ended up like for Ann D, but I really hope a major conglomerate don't acquire it...
Amo este canal 🤩
Can you talk about Yproject ?
They sell Ann Demeulemeester as Sears now.
LOVE SEBASTIEN
We all do
This is sad news . Another creative leaves . Myself I can see Olivier Theyskens doing a good job . A little more fitted silhouette but dark . Maybe it’s not a bad idea if it folds so no one can ruin it
Bliss was just talking about Ann D
Oh Damn, when?
I am really sad for Ann D. Ann D under Sebastien Meunier was by far my favorite brand. I have some pieces from that era. I have seen the latest fashion show under Italian ownership and it is so boring. Also no more XL sizes in the menswear. All that rest for me are the shoes.
Don´t get me wrong. It is his decision why he left the house. I like all the ethos surrounding Belgium Designer, but I think it is also good when they are more inclusive in terms of choosing the new designers. It would we cool to see someone, for example, Charles Jeffrey designing Ann Demeulemeester. Of cause it is always a risk involved but it is always fun of not knowing something, what could happen.
Personally for me I feel like designers need to be a good fit for certain houses. I think the idea of being experimental for experimental sake will just transform the ethos of the brand. The right person should be able to merge Ann Demeulemeester’s ideas with their own in a way that is genuine and true to the house. I really can’t see Charles Jeffrey doing that. I love Charles Jeffrey clothes and I’m a huge fan of his but I just don’t think it’s a good fit.
@@FashionRoadman Thanks for your view on that and I like her clothing and aesthetic. The comparison with Charles was very random, but personally, I want to see a more modern take on her clothing. But combining her house codes with the aesthetic of the following designer, what you mentioned in the video.
Bless
This is honestly terrifying :(
Extremely Terrifying
What’s Jason’s page?
Nobody can carry Ann D like Meunier has bruh this shit is so fucking sad man.
Yeah! If they get bought out that’s the end of Ann. I don’t know who could take the reigns of the brand. Imagine Heron Preston designing an Ann collection. lol.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
It was funny then I really thought about it and 😧
If that happens I’m signing out of fashion
intro song?
It sounds like you know a lot about the whole ethos of Ann D... You have also recognised how Sébastien Meunier has been able to capture the same ethos with his take on it. Why do you think the next designer wont be able to continue her story of Ann D? You have been able to understand it all through research and interest and I feel there has to be at least a handful of people who would be able to continue this at the Ann D house? I may be wrong i dunno haha.
Being a consumer and seeing what Sebastien Meunier has been able to do is entirely different to designing in a way that represents a genuine vision of the house of Ann D. The reason why Meunier was able to design in a way that was so true to him and the house was because he was personally mentored by Ann Demeulemeester herself.
I’m a consumer that sees the cohesiveness of the final products but Sebastien had the befit of learning all the design stages with Ann Demeulemeester that made the product.
omg can this guy pls go somewhere less windy........ also UNTIE THE KNOT IN YOUR HEADPHONES !!!! otherwise amazing video
Maybe Sander Lak, since Sies went out of business... He would fit the bill, wouldn't he?
Maybe he would work. He’s definitely a good designer but comparing the aesthetic of Sies Marjan with Ann Demeulemeester, it’s extremely different. That being said, maybe it’s the challenge he needs and he will successfully step up to the plate as well as develop the original ideas of the house the way Sebastien Meunier did.
The Fashion Archive yes I feel like he is more similar to Meunier, he also proved at dries that he can adapt to the identity of a house... his use of fabric would also be a nice transition from Meunier.
RIP to the brand
😢
phoebe philo would b interesting !
Ann D thinks men don't cry, bruh I cried when I stained my Supreme Casino Cuban shirt. Some may call me a bitch, but that shirt means something to me.
16:42 had the same thoughts :(
💔😢
🖐🏾
Virgil Abloh should be the next creative director🔥🔥🤘👍👍
Like if you agree
Comment if u dont
You've got to be kidding.......... NO!
@@Consrignrant sarcasm
Ann Demuelemeester is for a certain kind of woman, from a certain point in time. That time and moment has passed, and so I don't see why the brand even needs to continue ... maybe some business man or conglomerate might see a point to continue the brand in order to make money, but frankly, they would be wasting their capital as this brand is very niche, and they are better off spending their investment on something else if they want healthier returns.
I am that woman, from that time. The “moment” has passed but the need has not. I will wear these clothes into my 70’s as I have been able to through my 20’s, 30’s,and 40’s. That is the testament to her legacy and timeless relevancy, even long after her departure. Ann is no more niche than her contemporaries- Helmut, Margiela, Walter van Bierendock or even Dries. She does appeal to a certain type of independent woman, maybe something lacking here in the younger generation. As for healthy returns, don’t we have enough “brands” churning out garbage for profit? The lack of thoughtfulness in design is part of the pace, demand and crappy values of our times.
@@cultofmara Yeah, but are there enough women like you buying these kind of clothes for a business to make a profit from ??? If not, then it's not a business -- after all, this is ready-to-wear, not to made-to-measure.

Just because that’s what everyone is inundated with today doesn’t mean you can’t work differently.
There is a business model that works for smaller scale. They have already introduced it with a nice campaign by Willy VandePerre and classic offering for us “rare” customers.
but who cares, right ?
@@cultofmara Well, clearly the business for Demeulemeester isn't doing well -- if it was, they would not be trying to woo the founder out of retirement to save the brand... Moreover ,if you feel that you know of a business model that can work on a smaller scale, you are always welcome to propose to them. Who knows, maybe they would hire you to go work with the brand ???
@@tzegoh333 god willing 🖤

Ann D. is dead now as a brand.
I know exactly who to put in Sebastien's place...
Hedi Slimane
Not too sure about that
The Fashion Archive well what do you get if you put Skinny and drapey aesthetics together...
romance and femininity!!!
