I am a master mariner, gaining my certificate in Hong Kong in 1970 with the Hong Kong harbour authorities in a very stiff series of written, practical & verbal tests. All my father's side of my family have been mariners from at least my G G Grandfather. To me, shipwrights are the top of the tree where joinery is concerned. To watch these young guys, masters of their trade utilize it & produce this picture of perfection still has me in awe even now @ 73 years of age. I salute each & every one of you, BRAVO she is beautiful a credit to you all. 👏👏👏👏👏👏
Absolutely wonderful. Very heartening seeing young men that have learnt and are carrying on the heritage traditions. This video is particularly good because it shows the many techniques of wooden boat building in this one short film. It’s one of the best I’ve seen for that.
I have doubts about the correctness of using mechanical saws instead of axes. Because the processing with an axe closes the fibers in the bar, which prevents the bar from gaining water
Building a construction that is curved in all planes is a whole other ball game than house construction. You really have to be Sharp and focused. Great job and heritage preservation! Western Norway sits on a unbroken chain of craftmanship of wooden boat building, handed down from shipsmith to apprentice over at least 1500 years.
This is absolutely mind boggling. The fact that the original plan came out of someone’s mind and the builders had no where near the modern tools that these folks had. The men that restored this had pieces to mimic but that doesn’t take anything away from their skill set! They were phenomenal! What a great watch!
Marvellous way of looking at our ancestors brilliancy. Think about old generations, they didn't have any machineries to help their hard works those days.
Makes you really appreciate the skills and efforts of the original builders, who operated with only hand tools. Even with modern power tools it's brilliant work.
Really impressive that you were able to complete your master mariners certificate at such a young age. In 1970 I was 21 (four years older) and didn't know shit from putty.
Thank you from Argentina 🇦🇷 for sharing this so we can see the beautiful result of this ancient Norwegian craftsmanship. This speaks well of the craftsmen and also of Norway! 🇳🇴💪🏻
Unbelievable! Absolutely magnificent! Now can you imagine building ships centuries ago with the tools and materials they used! Just staggers to think how much we have regressed! The skill, love, and hard work put in here is just sensational. What a beautiful Lady you created!
My parents built a 42' live aboard seiner in the 1950's . She still floats in Moro Bay California. Seeing this vessel being constructed matches all the stories I heard down to pounding in the oakem between the boards. Shipright work is what this is . What an honor to see. Good on all of you !
I have fond memories of my father building boats. I found myself cheering watching this beautiful craft being launched. Outstanding craftsmanship gentleman...very impressive watching masters at work!! Thanks for sharing
That's such a massive endeavor, dedication, art... All things considered, only a handful specialized in love with such projects of these nature.... Bravo!!!
cant imagine what it was like in the days of the tall ships. the nitrate haulers..the p class ships .. without power tools. Building warships and utility vessels during that time had to have taken forever. beautiful craftsmanship
You have done an absolute superb job. We have visited you some years ago. It was a bit of a pitty for me that we couldn't stay longer watching your abilities. Great achievement you can be very prout of. Keep the spirit in your great team ... Greetings from Germany. 🖒💪☺☺☺
I always stand back in amazement when these techniques are used. ‘Steaming etc’. What is even more amazing is the guys that built the original boats with nothing more than hand tools. An adze for the shaping. A pit saw for planking. A couple of mortise chisels and a brace and bit. Stunning.
I want a job! This is absolutely amazing and I'd love to be a part of just one build! Can you imagine the skill and craftsmanship they had when this was all done by hand with no power tools at all! Just amazing 👏🏽 Great job to you all! 👏🏽 🎉🎉
This is the second time viewed this video, nor shall it be the last either. I could watch it many times over and still marvel at the builders dedication to craftsmanship.
My grandfather went to sea at 13 years of age sailed on 3 mastered schooners by the time he was done he could bring them into drydock remove the masts roll them over rebuild them stem to stern build new mast set them and then set it free. He would've love to visit and watch, and I would've been right there with him, nice job
Que trabalho primoroso! Parabéns, obrigado por compartilhar e por nos ensinar como se constroem barcos de madeira com essa técnica milenar. Vocês são sensacionais. Amazing work! Congratulations, thank you for sharing and for teaching us how to build wooden boats with this ancient technique. You are sensational.
These guys (masters) are amazing. How every curve, and every twist is measured and fitted onto the boat. I can only dream to have this kind of talent...and patience. Thank you for this video.
You have done a very good job, in building that Trawler. You all have been working very hard to get that far. Well done to the whole Team, that worked very hard, and also very tough, and in the end it all paid off. 🇿🇦👏👌👍
Everyman to his own professionals always make it look easy measure twice cut once fantastic workmanship beautiful looking vessel you should all be proud of what you achieved
Looks like the whole work is done by 3-5 people! Amazing, beautiful work and craftsmanship. Wood is such a wonderful material - everything just feels right, from the guys, their work, the shapes, the boat on sea.
Impressive on all levels. The skill level of making every piece fit perfectly. My General Contractor couldn't even install my tile or wood floor straight, on a flat surface.
Here in the Pacific Northwest there are still many young people involved in wooden boat building or reconstruction. And of course same is true for the east coast. Great to see that young people are interested to work with their hands and learn a trade. Bravo!!!
Well done. My father was a boatbuilder and we built some large vessels using lots of the same tools as these guys but I never helped him with anything this big. Very impressive. I hope that you all get properly paid for your brilliant work, it's hard to get well paid as a shipwright/boat builder in most countries.
I’m speechless! No idea type of craftsmanship that was involved in building a boat and the 1800s or any of the boats around the world to discover America. Sadly, now kids go to public school and learn nothing at all then they go to college and learn nothing at all. As an employer, I have people walking in my door all the time with college degrees and they can’t even write their name or do basic math. Sad state of affairs in America today. Bravo you guys absolutely breathtaking work that you do.
Incredible craftsmanship throughout this video. The end result looked amazingly beautiful. Great work to all including the videographer and editor as well. Excellent video! 👍
Watching this is like therapy. Such awesome and satisfying work, it you were to do a job for satisfaction alone, this woul be it. It also shows what original ship builder's achieved without modern tools and machinery. The end result is beautiful.
Imagine the massive Portuguese and Spanish galleons and carracks seen on the water in the 1400’s scary as hell to many tribes on the shorelines watching these massive ships with their tall sails unfurled. It took years to build massive wooden ships back then. Excellent video here showing old and new techniques!

What a fantastic compliment.
It is such a pleasure to watch craftsmen use tools to create something quite beautiful.

@@onnon98funny thing is that any shipwright could build

...and imagine watching the original builders😱
This is what the internet should be for. It's incredible to see how these young guys work with wood. This video has many views.
It's sad but they are a dying breed. I been a carpenter for 35 years and kids these days don't want to work.

Exactly. Where do you even begin on the scale like that. It’s like building a Hoover Dam with only a shovel and a bucket. 🙂
