One lens to see anew

  • After years of shooting in my hometown, it's hard for me to find new images. That's why I've decided to limit myself to shooting with just one lens for a few days. But not any lens, no. The least used lens in my camera bag, one that would prove to be quite the challenge in the narrow streets of town.

This january I have allmost only taken pictures with my 135mm prime through the windows from inside my house. Not selfimposed restriction, really, but just a busy month of sick kids, sick self and so on. But it has turned out to be a fun project. A lot of fog, snow, ice on the fjord (norway) and only square BW photos. Endless possibilities 🤗 Thank you for inspiration to shoot in "bad" weather 🥰

What a coincidence - I took my 135mm out today as well! Always a fun lens to play with, with the incredible bokeh and sharpness.

I’m a B&W street photographer. I recently got a Leica Q2 monochrome. Not only am I limited to B&W but also limited to 28mm. Simplifying has been a great benefit to my work. Another great video!

I sometimes go out with 2 lens, 20mm and 200mm primes on my Olympus OM2n and try and get a composition from the same spot with both lens.

Some really fine images in your own backyard on this project … thanks! Since acquiring my Fuji X100V in 2022, I’ve been in the one camera, one lens mode and really enjoying it. Mostly landscapes and I’m enjoying the slightly tighter FOV at 35 mm equivalent compared to my iPhone. I always take my camera along on bicycle rides using the PS Bagworks rider strap and the JJC neoprene camera case which mostly keeps the camera protected from sweat on hot days. PS: Take care when riding … I fell off my carbon endurance road bicycle six months ago and broke two bones in my left hand … ouch. At least my tough little Fuji survived that crash! Be safe and carry on creating your excellent images! 📷🚴‍♂️😄

Hi Adrian, my self imposed limitation was using my Nikon 80-400mm Lens and it was a real change for me. I took photos that i wouldn't normally take with surprising results. The limitations have actually been really positive and it's exciting, and you don't get bored because your doing something different. Nice photo of the tree and Shed. Many thanks for sharing. 😊

Following your visit to my home country - UK watching you work in very wet conditions, I have started looking for wet weather opportunities and it has resulted in some very pleasing images.

I have also sometimes by mistake had the Camera in APSC mode, Sony should have a small warning signal when the Camera is in APSC mode (HELLO SONY !!!). I often go with only one prime Lens at places I had never visited or rarely visited to force myself to look different at things. I have 10 prime Lenses which I often use in pairs, one wide angle Lens on one Camera and one short tele Lens on the other Camera, I can do a lot of combination with 14, 21, 24, 35 (2), 55, 65, 85, 110 and 135mm Lenses. I also have old analog adapted Lenses which I sometimes use.

I shoot on the streets with a 40mm lens. It certainly has limits and limits the sort of photographs I can achieve. I do like this limitation though. Not only am I free from having to make a decision about which lens to use but it forces me to look at a scene in a way that works with the focal length, often involving being creative with the angles I shoot at. I only shoot in B&W as I don't get on with colour so finding subjects to shoot with lots of tonal variation is another challenging limitation.

Just small changes make a difference. I shoot on fixed 28mm. Recently I have been away in Southern Italy. I used on a second camera a 35mm and also a 50mm. Just the move from 28mm to 35mm made a difference. So much so I’m starting to prefer 35mm more. Another great video from you and thanks for all your sharing. Just glad those dogs were behind the fence!

I've got a list of ideas that pretty much gives me the same challenge. To make myself think a little different. Eg: Only shoot 1:1 for the day. (I'm new to having this option in camera) Pick a colour for the day. So only shoot blue or yellow things for the day. Only shoot shadows or things based on their texture. Only shoot above or below eye level. Limit myself to 24 images because when I used to shoot film I'd always have rolls of 24.

I was out this past week doing street photography in a part of town I hadn't been to in nearly 50 years. And I limited myself to only using a 75mm lens. The purpose of the outing was to explore a part of town I had never explored before with a camera.

Another nice video. Thanks for the inspiration. Ive been using exclusively a 40mm ff equivalent for a few weeks now but I’m grabbing the 90mm (135 ff) and getting out. Should help isolate subjects with the rain were having in No CA.

Always some kind of limitation in my outings. But the one lens outings are a common one. and the least used lenses, as often as I'm feeling adventurous. I tend the opposite. My 135 is one of my most used lenses. and the wides don't get enough love. But I had a day with my 29mm recently, and got a few photos I wouldn't usually see. Today, I was trying to get some specific types of shots using a new technique to me. That was fun, and made me want to try some more.
I think any little challenge just helps to keep the interest, and trying new things helps you find the kinds of shots you enjoy, the ones you might want to practice more, and just develop a style that is your own.
and one of my favourite ways to find your own style, is trying to copy other styles. Because we are all a mix of each of our influences. We take something from them all, and create something new from those experiences.

One of the exercises I've heard about is the "50 foot" challenge, where you pick a spot and then try to find as many shots as possible within that limited distance. One of these days...

50mm on aps-c is my favoured “creativity constraint”. It’s a bit long for my liking. But I did have a D700 and an old manual focus AI 135mm that I took on holiday once and took some shots that quite surprised me. Irks a nice length but you need space in front of you.

Great video... a bit like your others - really like them so: thank you. On subject... i wonder at the extent to which the 'creative' element is about the person, and to what extent it is about the environment. So i'm alluding to some environments being far more creatively stimulating - being inherently richer - than others. My environments are like this and whichever one i'm in i'm swamped by opportunities. I did go somewhere different a few nights ago - still local, but not one i'd previously explored. It provided the most boring experience of the last couple of years and only a handful of interesting shots that i really struggled to find. I know that i'm fortunate in where i live and all that i have to do is step out the door and look around, not for 'subjects', but just for light and shadow. So placing limitations on my capacity to capture and unrepeatable instant doesn't really appeal, but i do see that it can have its place for certain people in certain places. I think that looking primarily for light and shadow, with little thought of 'a subject', helps me view the environment i'm in across a range of scales (and, with that, corresponding focal lengths). The price, of course, is the quantity of gear on my back every day (something that has fitness benefits). I guess if i lived in a city then the world would be different - just my pocket with a wide and a 90mm tele-macro - but i live in a cabin in a swamp in a coastal rainforest and, with rare exceptions, it's uncommon to not find something new to be excited about. Cheers and all the best from NZL.
