I don't know if it's on your listbut Batman Returns is a Xmas movie. If you don't have it on your list do so. I hope you may have time to watch it. Can only hope!
Fun fact: Howie Mandel did the voice of Gizmo, while Frank Welker (Fred from the original Scooby-Doo cartoon), Peter Cullen (voice of Optimus Prime), and Michael Winslow (sound effects guy from Police Academy) did some of the voices of the Gremlins.
Joe Dante was given Carte Blanche to do what he wanted on Gremlins 2 which is why it is literally bat shit crazy. He stated in interviews he didn't want to make the same movie twice which is why it is radically different from the first.
"What's her story?!" 😮 "That's the worst Christmas story ever!" 🤣🤣🤣 Phoebe Cates delivers that wild monolog like a champ! Katie's holiday trauma comes out of left field and is never mentioned again. Joe Dante's dark humor at play 😅
@@eXpriest Nice job of spoiling an upcoming joke, jerk. It's better to let her have the fun of hearing it fresh for herself, but you just had to say something to get some attention. Pathetic
Everyone and their daddies had a crush on Phoebe Cates in the 80s. It was crazy. She infected all of us like it was Cates Covid. About carolers, we had them in my neighborhood. I didn't want to open the door but my little niece who could barely reach the doorknob at the time did. So she opened it for them. And listened for a bit not knowing what to make of it. Before promptly closing the door on them mid-verse.
I think Ms. Cates caught a lot of attention from her first film, "Paradise," because she was willing to play some of it in just her skin. Later she sad she regretted making that choice, and I don't blame her, but it sure got her a lot of attention, despite the fact the movie wasn't much good.
Gremlins was filmed on the Town Square set, on Universal Studios backlot. The same set featured in To Kill A Mockingbird, It’s A Wonderful Life & Back To The Future. Also, the cinema the gremlins gather in, is the same cinema that Marty crashes the DeLorean into when he returns to 1985. Yes, it is the Time Machine from the George Pal production….& there’s also Robbie the Robot from The Forbidden Planet.
Something I never realized until Joe Dante told me in the DVD commentary: They never disposed of the gremlin at the school. They had a scene filmed, but when they put the film together, they couldn't work out where to put it (because there's the phone call from Billy that triggers him to run home, and the scene would've come after that, but they needed Billy to get home faster).
This movie is so cute and funny and also very scary! The original script was a lot darker and more violent than the movie itself: Billy's mom was going to be decapitated by the Gremlins and they were going to throw her severed head down the stairs after Billy comes home. The gremlins were also going to attack a McDonald's restaurant but instead of eating the hamburgers, they were going to kill and eat the customers. The ending was a lot different as it involved Gizmo turning into a Gremlin in order to stop Stripe, but Spielberg rejected this version of the ending and instead have Gizmo be the hero at the end.
Gizmo turning into a Gremlin wouldn’t fit his nature though since he rejected it most of the movie. He is suppose to be the oddity of their species, the others are how they usually behave, Gizmo is the black sheep of the species so to speak. So him turning into a gremlin wouldn’t make sense.
Loved this in the theaters. It’s become a Christmas tradition in recent years when the girl child fell in love with gizmo. And yes that background gag of the time machine disappearing is one of the all time dialogue free best scenes ever. You’ll never get that them done out of your head though.
I was obsessed with this movie right away when I first watched it as a kid. To this day there is not a single other movie like it. Well, except Gremlins 2 ofc which is also great.
I might not be Christmas yet but your wonderful reactions are a gift with every watch and this one was super adorable and heartwarming. Hair down with a beanie looking super wintery Jen 🙂 the picture of the furbabies sleeping together is cute AF 🥰 4 jump scares and plenty of wheezing this was great cheers Jen I will rewatch again during the festive season for sure brilliant commentary as always you truly are the best Jen 🔥💙🔥💙
Loved this film since I saw it in '84. It used the same Universal backlot set as "Back to the Future". Joe Dante, the director, likes to put nods to, and in-jokes of other films onto his. You did notice the time machine from the classic film, Also, the big robot in that scene is Robby from the film "Forbidden Planet". That is just a few of the easter eggs in the movie. The sequel is also fun, a lot crazier and not as dark. Dante also directed another sci-fi/adventure/comedy in the '80's called "Innerspace" that is worth a watch as well.
Fun little fact this movie and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom were the reason why PG-13 was made, and the fact that the movie was actually supposed to be way darker the mom was supposed to die (death by decapitation and her head chucked down the stairs)as well as the dog, and it was actually a split personality between stripe and Gizmo
The PG-13 rating was invented principally because of parental backlash over Goonies (which almost everyone felt should have been R, by the standards of the day, but was rated PG because the ratings board apparently watched the first 30 minutes of the movie with the sound muted, or something).
There was a line of toys called "Furbies" that were furr-covered electronic devices that could 'hear' sounds, and respond with 'singing' (a high-pitched trilling chirp). Though ostensibly birds, they bore a strong resemblance to Mogwai in their size and facial features, which would move when they sang.
The guy standing behind Dad Peltzer in the phone booth at the inventor's convention is composer Jerry Goldsmith. There was also Steven Spielberg driving through the picture in an electric wheelchair.
An all time classic and one of my favorite movies. Not to mention the movie that introduced me to Phoebe Cates who I've had a crush on for over 20 years now. So fun fact, this was the movie along with Temple of Doom that invented the PG-13 rating. Spielberg himself came up with it as he said there was a rating needed for more violent films than PG but not enough for R.
Good catch on the Time Machine prop, I totally missed that! Joe Dante loves to put Fifties sci-fi references in his movies, Robby the Robot from "Forbidden Planet" is also at the inventor's convention. The sequel is pure cartoony wackiness.
Oh my goodness! The cuteness quotient of your reactions to this movie is off the chart! You're just adorable! Also, loved the part where Billy turned on the gas in the movie theatre, lit the fire, then ran out. Then the explosion happens and Jen says, "Merry Christmas!" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 The irony is just too much! 🤣🤣🤣
'Sword!' 'Saw blade!' 'Crossbow!' 'Billy's mom is officially a better fighter than him!' This crazy good reaction proves that you are actually an awesome dame! You killed it again, Jen!
lol Billy sucked as a fighter! Young strapping lad, and he got his a-- kicked by a tiny green goblin. ;) But I suppose this is one of the reasons this is such a great movie - it turns stuff on its head, it's not the macho male protagonist who saves the day with his bravery and brawn.
Fun fact: all of Mrs. Deegle's cats were named after money: Kopek, Dollar Bill, etc. #2: This movie and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom were responsible for the creation of the PG13 rating in the US.
indiana jones yes, gremlins no. the PG-13 rating , came out on june 1st 1984 , gremlins released june 8th 1984. however spielberg wanted gremlins to slot in at pg-13 . but the movie didn't cause the rating to be created. more impactful to the rating's creation was the home VCR and a slew of 1970's movies like Porky's or animal house , that had previously been rated PG , despite being filled with drug/alcohol use and brief nudity of variious degrees. the rating allowed them to re-classify the VHS releases of those movies so that young kids wouldnt have "direct" access to them.
Hey Jen, I remember the day that I rented "Gremlins" from a local video store (those small local rental places that existed long before Blockbuster Video and Netflix). It was in the wintertime of 1984, half a year after the film came out in theaters. The film is considered a black comedy or a horror comedy as we refer to them nowadays. "Gremlins" was produced at a time when combining horror and comedy was becoming increasingly popular, such as "A Nightmare on Elm Street" and " The Evil Dead" films. You might not be aware of this tidbit but the notion of gremlins was first conceived during the 1920s when mechanical failures in RAF (Royal Air Force) aircraft were jokingly blamed on the small monsters. A Bugs Bunny cartoon, "Falling Hare" (1943), has Bugs battling a gremlin on an airplane. Director Joe Dante had read a book titled "The Gremlins" (also in 1943) and said that the book was of some influence on his film. Gizmo was definitely a huge hit with people (especially women) who wanted one of their own. They are adorably cute. It is definitely a Christmas-themed film and many people enjoy watching it during the holiday season. The sequel is definitely "different" and you will get mixed reviews from commenters below. The tone of "Gremlins" was considered to be a bit dark so the sequel is very lighthearted and outrageously comedic. I'll leave it up to you (or your commenters) to see if you'd do a reaction to it. I'm not sure if you were aware but at the very end of the closing credits, once the theme has ended, you can hear the sounds of gremlins laughing. This is to say that some gremlins may have survived to lead the film in having a sequel. 📽❤️
"those small local rental places that existed long before Blockbuster Video and Netflix" the apropriate term is Mom and Pop movie Rentals. and yeah till about 89" those were the bread and butter of movie rentals . in the 90's big cahins swooped in to try and be the "walmart" of movie rentals (namely blockbuster) and well we see how that went for them in the end.
I watched this in the theater when I was 11. I didn’t realize how scary this movie was until I showed it to my son when he was maybe 11 or 12. He still won’t go into dark rooms …He’s 18. That was a really bad parenting choice, 1 of many. He did recently forgive me, lol. I remembered Gizmo as being so adorable. I forgot about all the surrounding circumstances and characters. And the story about the dad dead in the chimney totally blocked that out. Thanks for all you do!
Being a bit older, I far too often take it for granted others would know...Gizmo was very much a popular toy item with the release of the movie. Like Baby Yoda, a must-have for thousands and thousands of kids. Gremlins, Cabbage Patch Kids, and Baby Yoda, all struck a chord with the public and were/are that must-have hot toy for their time
fun facts. mogwai is a chinese word for demon, or devil . the genius of this movie is so in your face but so few people (today) catch it because the ww2 stories of gremlins is distant . but the father is an inventor of inventions that always break down after a short time , he then gives his son a present that kinda "breaks down", by birthing creatures whose myths suggest they were the cause of ww2 machines breaking down. the 2nd movie continues this theme by taking place in a high tech building that is also always having break downs. furbies were influenced by gizmo. they actually had a line of gremlin stuffed animals in the 80's. i had both gizmo and the gremlin version of stripe. i lost them to a house fire in 1993.
Giz might be one of the cutest puppets of the 80's 🥰 Chris Walas nailed the baby Yoda formula decades before Disney. Short, big ears, big eyes, little hands doing people stuff, and cute noises.
@@jenmurrayxo Gizmo and the Gremlins were animatronic puppets using radio controlled servo mechanisms, cable and rod actuated manual controls from outside their bodies, and traditional hand puppetry. Closeup hero puppets were often built larger scaled, so they could do much more detailed facial and body movements than the regular sized versions.
Fun facts about the movie: The Gremlins were animatronic, and cost over $30,000 each. Security searched people's cars every day to make sure they weren't stolen. The original idea was to use stop motion animation for the gremlins. Special effects wizard Chris Walas wanted to use puppets. Someone at Warner Brothers thought it would be a good idea to use spider monkeys dressed in gremlin costumes. They tested this in director Joe Dante's office, and it didn't go well. For some reason, the test monkey didn't like being dressed as a gremlin, and it went nuts, destroying Dante's office. After the animal trainer got the monkey back under control, Walas said, "So, puppets?" When Warner Brothers received the first cut of the movie, they sent a note to Steven Spielberg and director Joe Dante complaining there were too many gremlins. Spielberg suggested cutting them all out and renaming the movie to "People." At least one of Phoebe Cates' screams was real. In one scene, a big cockroach crawled out in front of her, and they used her reaction in the movie. Gremlins and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom inspired the MPAA to create the PG-13 rating. These two movies were too violent for PG, but not enough for R. The original script was very violent, but Joe Dante and Steven Spielberg wanted to make it family friendly, so they changed the more violent scenes. Contrary to popular belief, there is no secret R-rated version of this movie. Near the beginning of the movie you can see a wrecked AMC Gremlin (back then, "AMC" stood for "American Motors Corporation," not "American Movie Classics.") These cars are scarce and collectible today, and are now seen as the beginning of the end for AMC. The company renamed itself "Jeep Eagle Corporation" in 1988, and merged with Chrysler in 1990, six years after the release of this movie. The dog's reaction on seeing Gizmo for the first time was genuine. It was truly startled by the appearance of the puppet. Keye Luke was 78 years old when filming began, but he looked so good they had to rely on makeup to make him look old.
🐱👍 The mid 1980s were full of fun popcorn movies like this. I vaguely recall this coming out at around the same time as "Romancing The Stone," which you'd also probably enjoy. Anyone who is extremely into dogs and cats should definitely watch both the original "The Incredible Journey" (1963) and the remake with Michael J. Fox and Sally field (1993). Another movie that dog lovers always get a kick out of is "The Mask" (1994) with Jim Carrey. 🐶 With that one, you'll DEFINITELY wind up giving the MVP award to his cute dog. 😸
Hi Jen, There is a Gremlins 2. This time it is in New York City. A lot of the same characters and actors return and it is a little bit more comedy than the first one. And again I enjoyed your reaction. Happy Holidays.
It was filmed on the Universal back lot, the same as used in Back to the Future. The location of the diner/aerobics studio/80s diner in the BTTF movies was used for the bank here.
to say it shortly: when strife jumps into the pool its like a factory because the gremlins which he "breeds" and which reach their adult stage are going to "breed" new gremlins too and so own until there isnt enough water anymore.
Spielberg produced it, but Joe Dante directed it. Hes maybe one of the most underrated directors ever. Some other great films by Dante are Gremlins 2, MATINEE!, Explorers, Piranha (70s), The Howling (just the 1st one), The Burbs, and one of my favorites, Innerspace... aka 80s AntMan. Joe's films are always fun, and a little over the top.. hes a big Looney Tunes fan so theres always a little homage to that style of humor. Hes also a walking movie encyclopedia like Tarintino, so he puts references to tons of movies in his films. I saw this movie over 10 times in the theater in 84. It was my Star Wars / Lord of the Rings.
Loved this reaction. This movie absolutely rips. You'll have to do the sequel at some point - which isn't an xmas movie but is absolutely an insane masterpiece
Kate's character has one of the most horrifyingly traumatic backstories in the history of movies, and no one ever talks about it. People don't even remember it. You could write an entire movie focused on that experience, but it doesn't even play into this movie's plot at all. Its crazy to me.
I’m not gonna lie. I didn’t see your previous ads for your weekly shows and when Gremlins showed up I literally said out loud “oh yeah”. This will be fun. gremlins is so wild.
The most amazing thing about the movie is how Gremlins know about time zones and possibly even daylight savings time (depending on where on the world you are).
The music is written by Jerry Goldsmith who also scored ALIEN, The Omen and the original Planet of the Apes, amongst many other classic movies. Gremlins 2 is insanely brilliant and you should also check out InnerSpace from the same director - a similarly wacky 80s sci fi adventure with great practical FX.
Your obsession with Gizmo was just how EVERYONE was back when this movie was fresh in the theaters and throughout the next year or more after. It was like a craze and everyone wanted a Gizmo doll and were almost impossible to find or keep in stock in stores.
i had one. my cousin got the (gremlin version) of stripe as well which he gave to me a few years after having it. they were teh coolest stuffed animals , and life sized to their size in the movie.
They did a couple of still faces for Gizmo that didn't have as much movement (scared, sleepy), but the closeups were all animatronics, and I'm pretty sure they used animatronics for the evil ones in a couple of places too. There's one stop motion shot of all the evil ones marching down the street, but whenever they show more than one in the same frame it's usually puppets. This movie has so much else going on that it doesn't get talked about that much, but the special effects were actually pretty amazing for the time.
Love this movie! I saw it in the theater when it came out with my sister. How can you not smile and feel happy when Gizmo starts to sing. :)My sister instantly loved Gizmo so I got her a Gizmo stuffed animal for Christmas one year. Looking forward to seeing your reaction to Gremlins 2!
2:40 - Doctor Moreau is a character in the H.G. Wells novel The Island of Doctor Moreau, where the doctor creates animal-human hybrids to disasterous effect. It's been adapted into at least three movies. 10:00 - I can only remember carolers coming around once, many years ago. Maybe it happens more in small towns, or more tight-knit communities. 12:24 - Most reactors cut out the father's phone call from the convention, and the time machine (from the 1960 movie) in the background. Also the robot that's walking around and standing behind him, is Robby the Robot from the movie Forbidden Planet (1956). He's appeared in movies, many TV shows and even commercials. If you have a spare $20,000 (give or take) you can buy a full-sized, official replica. As for Gizmo, there are stuffed versions that you can buy, and back when Furbies were big, they made a Gizmo Furbie. You can find them on eBay. There IS a sequel, but it's really silly. I never cared much for it myself.
Fun spotting Dick Miller in this (9:54, as the snowplow driver). He stars in Roger Corman's "A Bucket of Blood" (1959, a good companion movie to Corman's original Little Shop of Horrors) and has a bit part in The Terminator (1984) as the gun store owner. One of those character actors with a truly gigantic filmography. Once you recognize him you'll see him everywhere.
Christmas eve perfect for a rewatch and this was super festive 🎄 fun fact the black and white movie the mum was watching without sound in the kitchen was ' its a wonderful life ' which you only just watched jen 🙂 . Whenever i see a heart drawn on a window im going to always think you did it from now on 😀 . Loved thos reaction as much this time as the first time just wonderful jen 👌 oh i just noticed my gem changed from green to pink 💎 merry Christmas to you and family jen 🎄🧑🎄💙
Classic comedy/horror film. I’d say the horror is really light but it uses the same type of techniques. It just doesn’t have all the gore that normally accompanies the jump scares. I’d say the sequel strays more into comedy, and is almost a parody in the vein of Airplane and Naked Gun with a lot of scenes being bits as opposed to scenes integral to the story.
I recently introduced my 9y.o. son, Kenzie, to _'Gremlins'_ and _'Gremlins 2: The New Batch'._ Just like you, he instantly fell in love with *Gizmo,* so I bought him a *Gizmo Plushie* 🧸🥰❤️ Bless his heart, Kenzie actually won’t bring the plushie into the living-room after sunset, "because the light would hurt him!" 😄 He hides *Gizmo* under his quilt, in his bedroom, in the evening, for the same reason; it’s truly adorable! 🥰❤️ *P.S. -* You, Jen, are most _definitely_ a *_DAME!_* 😍
"Billy’s mom is officially a better fighter than he is." To paraphrase another movie character, "Nobody beats her in the kitchen!" 😉 IIRC Phoebe Cates (*drool*) thought the dad monologue was a joke, or that they were pranking her. She delivered it so well though 😅
I was way too young the first time I saw this. Pulled the DVD off my dad's shelf and saw a cute furry thing on the front, so I started watching. Ended up being terrified of the dark for years, AND found out about Santa from Phoebe Cates' story about her dad. But I watched it again years later and this movie became a Christmas tradition, along with Die Hard and Scrooged. Great reaction! And just in case there isn't another movie reaction to comment on before the weekend, Merry Christmas!
Loved your reaction Jen! Yeah, there is a Gremlins 2, and it's awesome! Some say it's better than the first, and I ain't gunna argue with them. It ain't Christmas-y though. so you could watch it anytime. Fun fact: Chris Murphy references G2 in the Sloan song "Someone I Can Be True With" Lol.
Before the days of cable television, Christmas caroling was very common in our neighborhoods. Kids could make a few bucks spreading Christmas cheer. And if you were a kid that couldn't sing, like me, you could go around and shovel peoples sidewalks and driveways. Many would gladly pay a buck to get their property shoveled. Beats getting into trouble with boredom. Fun times.
Little known fact, this movie is the last appearance of Robbie the robot. After filming the scene at the inventors convention where Robbie is at the pay phone next to Axton. The second after filming one of the arms fell out of the socket, the old royalite plastic was becoming more fragile over the years, the suit’s owner saying on set “Robbie’s retired” Oh yes, Robbie’s lines are the same as “Forbidden Planet,” the movie he first appeared in.
In Gremlins on his way to work William says hello to Dr. Moreau who just happens to be the towns veterinarian. In the movie 'The Island of Doctor Moreau', Doctor Moreau is a mad scientist who creates human like hybrid beings from animals. Making him a Mad Veterinarian, if you will.
Jen is on another level. Just fun fun fun the whole way through - good sound balance, great editing, and your commentary and quirky sounds are just real fun to watch. I'd go bowling with you anytime.
Enjoyed this reaction. Appreciate your decision to give worst to the old lady, I'd half expected you to give it to the gremlins for the reasons you listed but agree, her threatening the dog was most despicable. Thanks again! 👌
Plenty of viewers watching that first scene of Mrs. Deagle had to have wanted this exchange: Guy: "Morning, Mrs. Deagle!" Mrs. Deagle: "Kiss my grits!" like my comment if you get the reference. Curious to see how many older viewers there are for this video.
Fun facts. Gizmo was voiced by Howie Mandel. Steven Spielberg and composer Jerry Goldsmith both appear as extras. Robby the Robot appears at the convention, he was in the movie Forbidden Planet, and occasionally appears in other movies since. The town square is the same one as Back To THe Future.
Such an awesome, unconventional Christmas movie. I was petrified when I first saw the movie as a kid, especially when one gremlin got blown up in the microwave!
HAHAHA. I love when they were caroling out in front of Deagle house and the bar scene and movie theater scene. So cute when they all started singing HI Ho Hi Ho. lol Great reaction Jenn Happy Holidays beautiful.
Seeing this brings back memories of my 7-year-old self seeing it in the theater in 1984. Some great films came out that year. This was definitely one of them! Great reaction. Merry Christmas!!
"Is that a crossbow?! Is that a chainsaw?!!" Spike's escalation as he beats down Billy is hilarious! When he pulls out the pistol 🤣🤣🤣 It's such an American Christmas!
I don't know why I watch your RUclips channel and love it so much. Maybe it's your smile. Maybe it's your heart. You have fans. Please know that they all love you. Yes. I am one of them. Merry Christmas to you and yours.
Knowing your love for baby yoda i knew you'd fall in love with gizma Dame jen and the dog ofc 🙂 cute movie fun reaction and what could be better than a jen reaction on Christmas day 🎉 cheers for the festive fun jen 🎄
It's especially nice seeing you have a fun reaction mixed with curiosity and playfulness after watching so many scary or intense films. You needed a break like this :) Your noise replications are spot on in this movie ..... well, maybe not spot on, but funny to see at the very least. I liked seeing how quickly you adored Gizmo too. We can all use a Gizmo in our lives :)
I'll admit it Jen, you don't want to feed me after midnight either. Toxic gas is not a good thing. Thanks for gifting us little people with your holiday reactions. And yes Jen, You are a good Dame! M E E R Y C H R I S T M A S !
@@tomhoffman4330 Well you shouldn't be cooking dinner now...SHOULD YOU! Not kidding. How can you be thinking about eating when Jen is reacting! Are you out of your mind? Ok enough of my rant, what's for dinner?
Hey Jen, It's awesome that you got to experience that Gizmo love so close to Christmas day. I see you can't contain yourself and your overwhelming attraction to cuteness. Just remember NOT TO FEED GIZMO AFTER MIDNIGHT.
A lot of the trivia stuff I was going to mention didn't make your editing cut, but I'll mention them anyway. The guy who commented on Billy's drawing of Mrs. Deagle as a dragon was the famous illustrator/director Chuck Jones, who did a lot of Looney Tunes (Bugs Bunny, roadrunner, etc.) The two movies shown on the marquee while Billy was running to work were "A Boys Life" and "Watch the Skies" which were the original working titles of E.T. and Closer Encounters, respectively. If you look closely at the scene in the department store where Spike is hiding among the plushy toys, one of the ones he's behind is an E.T. doll, which is especially funny given that E.T. did something similar in his movie. In a scene of the father calling from the convention, the guy riding across in the electric wheelchair was actually Steven Spielberg.

Great reaction as usual.
FYI, Gremlins 2 is worth watching. As far as sequels go, it's not a bad one.
Thumbs up if agree, please.
I don't know if it's on your listbut Batman Returns is a Xmas movie. If you don't have it on your list do so. I hope you may have time to watch it. Can only hope!
All I can think about now is someone writing a spect script for Tiny Friends. This need to be a thing.
One of my favorite movies you can see 2 all so
Fun fact: Howie Mandel did the voice of Gizmo, while Frank Welker (Fred from the original Scooby-Doo cartoon), Peter Cullen (voice of Optimus Prime), and Michael Winslow (sound effects guy from Police Academy) did some of the voices of the Gremlins.
Gremlins 2: The New Batch is well worth a watch. It isn't holiday connected is done much more in the style of old Looney Tunes cartoons.
The second One is a funny Movie. They make fun about themself. But really good.
Indeed. It's a lot more lighthearted and funny, satirizing itself and other pop culture references, every step of the way.
Both are classics

I might not be Christmas yet but your wonderful reactions are a gift with every watch and this one was super adorable and heartwarming. Hair down with a beanie looking super wintery Jen 🙂 the picture of the furbabies sleeping together is cute AF 🥰 4 jump scares and plenty of wheezing this was great cheers Jen I will rewatch again during the festive season for sure brilliant commentary as always you truly are the best Jen 🔥💙🔥💙
Thanks Ian!! ☺️👍
6:24 I love the little blubbering sound he's making.
"Isn't that what the Witch says in Wizard of Oz?!"
Good catch Jen! Mrs Deagle is a great homage to the dual roles of Wicked Witch and Almira Gulch.
☺️👍🎄☃️
@@jenmurrayxo you should definitely check out the sequel: Gremlins 2 the new batch, you'll love it just as much, plus more Gizmo.
With a dash of Mr. Potter from It's A Wonderful Life
An all time classic and one of my favorite movies.
One of my favourite films since I was a kid
Fun little fact is that Howie Mandel did the voice for gizmo. ProbaBly the last person on earth I would have guessed to put on that voice.
Good catch on the Time Machine prop, I totally missed that!
Joe Dante loves to put Fifties sci-fi references in his movies, Robby the Robot from "Forbidden Planet" is also at the inventor's convention.
The sequel is pure cartoony wackiness.
Billy’s mom is a badass
Totally!!!
A true 80s classic. Great reactions. I love Gizmo too.
☺️👍🎄☃️
Oh my goodness! The cuteness quotient of your reactions to this movie is off the chart! You're just adorable! Also, loved the part where Billy turned on the gas in the movie theatre, lit the fire, then ran out. Then the explosion happens and Jen says, "Merry Christmas!" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 The irony is just too much! 🤣🤣🤣
When my mum's cat had babies, one of them looked exactly like Gizmo. She'll be 16 in april but she'll always be my baby Gizmo. 😻
Phoebe Cates was THE “IT” girl. She was a huge star.
'Sword!' 'Saw blade!' 'Crossbow!' 'Billy's mom is officially a better fighter than him!' This crazy good reaction proves that you are actually an awesome dame! You killed it again, Jen!
Thanks T! ☺️👍🎄☃️
lol Billy sucked as a fighter! Young strapping lad, and he got his a-- kicked by a tiny green goblin. ;)
But I suppose this is one of the reasons this is such a great movie - it turns stuff on its head, it's not the macho male protagonist who saves the day with his bravery and brawn.
Fun fact: all of Mrs. Deegle's cats were named after money: Kopek, Dollar Bill, etc.
#2: This movie and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom were responsible for the creation of the PG13 rating in the US.
☺️👍🎄☃️
indiana jones yes, gremlins no. the PG-13 rating , came out on june 1st 1984 , gremlins released june 8th 1984. however spielberg wanted gremlins to slot in at pg-13 . but the movie didn't cause the rating to be created. more impactful to the rating's creation was the home VCR and a slew of 1970's movies like Porky's or animal house , that had previously been rated PG , despite being filled with drug/alcohol use and brief nudity of variious degrees. the rating allowed them to re-classify the VHS releases of those movies so that young kids wouldnt have "direct" access to them.
"those small local rental places that existed long before Blockbuster Video and Netflix"
the apropriate term is Mom and Pop movie Rentals. and yeah till about 89" those were the bread and butter of movie rentals . in the 90's big cahins swooped in to try and be the "walmart" of movie rentals (namely blockbuster) and well we see how that went for them in the end.
You have to watch Gremlins 2! One of the best sequels of all time. It's not a Christmas movie, so you can watch it whenever.
He's sooooo cute!!!
Fun facts about the movie:
The Gremlins were animatronic, and cost over $30,000 each.
After the animal trainer got the monkey back under control, Walas said, "So, puppets?"
When Warner Brothers received the first cut of the movie, they sent a note to Steven Spielberg and director Joe Dante complaining there were too many gremlins. Spielberg suggested cutting them all out and renaming the movie to "People."
At least one of Phoebe Cates' screams was real.
10:00 My dad used to be in a group that went to nursing homes and sung carols at each person's room.
Oh yes, the Mask. My first PG-13 movie and one of the greatest comedies ever!
Hi Jen, There is a Gremlins 2. This time it is in New York City. A lot of the same characters and actors return and it is a little bit more comedy than the first one. And again I enjoyed your reaction. Happy Holidays.
and a Murray Christmas to you too!....and to your creative editor who adds so much to your reactions!
Every Mogwai and Gremlin was animatronic and puppet.
☺️👍
Can’t verbalize how much I love this movie. Thanks so much for reacting to it. You are quite the dame!
The close-ups were oversized puppets to get more movement in the faces.
Gizmo was voiced by Howie Mandel also
Love this movie!
The power of film composer Jerry Goldsmith, who starred in the movie as well as scored and starred in the sequel, "Gremlins 2: The New Batch".
Amazing videeeeo.
Please make THE GREMLINS 2 THE NEW BATCH
The spotlight on GRETA the FEMALE GREMLIN 😂❤🎉🎉
This is an excellent first horror movie for young kids.
Yes, this and Beetlejuice were my intro to horror when I was a kid. I remember watching both with my dad.
Damn I did bad with The Omen and Nightmare on Elm St. Careless babysitters. :) Granted now it's probably my favorite genre.
Gizmo is even cuter in part 2!
I will Second that; in one scene, He literally does "Purr!!" 🥰
I love the Santa in the chimney story - it's so funny!!!
I recently introduced my 9y.o. son, Kenzie, to _'Gremlins'_ and _'Gremlins 2: The New Batch'._ Just like you, he instantly fell in love with *Gizmo,* so I bought him a *Gizmo Plushie* 🧸🥰❤️
Bless his heart, Kenzie actually won’t bring the plushie into the living-room after sunset, "because the light would hurt him!" 😄 He hides *Gizmo* under his quilt, in his bedroom, in the evening, for the same reason; it’s truly adorable! 🥰❤️
*P.S. -* You, Jen, are most _definitely_ a *_DAME!_* 😍
Interesting fact that few seem to know: The voice of Gizmo was provided by none other than Howie Mandel.
Absolute classic. Loved it as a kid and it still makes me laugh now.
"Billy’s mom is officially a better fighter than he is." To paraphrase another movie character, "Nobody beats her in the kitchen!" 😉
IIRC Phoebe Cates (*drool*) thought the dad monologue was a joke, or that they were pranking her. She delivered it so well though 😅
"Welllllll.....technically it did make juice" BAHAHAHA!! That made me die 🤣🤣🤣
😂👍🎄☃️
Wizard of Oz was "I'll get you my pretty, and your little dog too" but I think this was referencing that line.
I absolutely love the theme music. I had it for my ringtone for a little while.
Oh no, what an awful way to find out about Santa!! 😱 Merry Christmas ☺️👍🎄☃️
Stripe makes my top 15 movie villains, Gizmo makes my top 10 cutest character. I've seen this movie for decades and I still want a Gizmo
For Gremlins 2, they ramped up the wackiness and toned down the horror.
I prefer the second to the first.
The sequel is a big troll by director Joe Dante. It pokes fun at the first movie. It's glorious.
Fun times.
Thanks for this reaction! Hoyt Axton (the father) is also the father in "The Black Stallion," a movie that I am confident that you would enjoy.
Glad you saw E.T. first. Gizmo was before elmo, it was a predecessor in the must have Christmas gift.
Little known fact, this movie is the last appearance of Robbie the robot. After filming the scene at the inventors convention where Robbie is at the pay phone next to Axton. The second after filming one of the arms fell out of the socket, the old royalite plastic was becoming more fragile over the years, the suit’s owner saying on set “Robbie’s retired”
Oh yes, Robbie’s lines are the same as “Forbidden Planet,” the movie he first appeared in.
"Tiny Friends" starring Gizmo and Baby Yoda sounds like a movie I want to watch.
Jen, the song at the end was made by the musician sampling a cat meow and putting it into his Keyboard and playing a song with it.
"Gismo"... "Baby Yoda"... and "Baby Groot"!
The voice of Gismo (other than the Singing) was Done by Howie Mandel.
Omggg yesssss
Also some trivia for you, Gizmo was voiced by Howie Mandel, using nearly the exact same voice he later used for Bobby in 'Bobby's World'.
Jen is on another level. Just fun fun fun the whole way through - good sound balance, great editing, and your commentary and quirky sounds are just real fun to watch. I'd go bowling with you anytime.
Thanks, I'm having a blast! This one was edited by the awesome Dmytro 👍
The voice of gizmo being provided by none other than Howie Mandell of America's got talent....
You are correct Gizmo is a puppet, they had the small one for far away shots and then for those more detailed close ups they built much bigger models
Enjoyed this reaction. Appreciate your decision to give worst to the old lady, I'd half expected you to give it to the gremlins for the reasons you listed but agree, her threatening the dog was most despicable. Thanks again! 👌
☺️👍🎄☃️
Plenty of viewers watching that first scene of Mrs. Deagle had to have wanted this exchange:
Guy: "Morning, Mrs. Deagle!"
Mrs. Deagle: "Kiss my grits!"
like my comment if you get the reference. Curious to see how many older viewers there are for this video.
FLO from ALICE
For some reason Kate bartending for them is my favorite part
So gross! 😂
It's so gruesome, but taught me the value of microwave safety 😅
This is such an under-appreciated movie! Yes, it's a Christmas film, and yes, it's very fun, suspenseful and funny.
Underappreciated?! This is a classic.
There is a sequel. Gremlins 2: The New Batch (1990). It is NOT a Christmas movie but absolutely worth checking out/reacting to.
"Is that a crossbow?! Is that a chainsaw?!!"
Spike's escalation as he beats down Billy is hilarious! When he pulls out the pistol 🤣🤣🤣 It's such an American Christmas!
STRIPE
went GTA on BILLY
I don't know why I watch your RUclips channel and love it so much. Maybe it's your smile. Maybe it's your heart. You have fans. Please know that they all love you. Yes. I am one of them. Merry Christmas to you and yours.
Thanks Joe! Merry Christmas ☺️👍🎄☃️
You needed a break like this :)
Your noise replications are spot on in this movie ..... well, maybe not spot on, but funny to see at the very least.

Good Evening Eric! Sorry I'm late, She Posted this one right when I was cooking dinner.

☺️👍🎄☃️
A lot of the trivia stuff I was going to mention didn't make your editing cut, but I'll mention them anyway.
The guy who commented on Billy's drawing of Mrs. Deagle as a dragon was the famous illustrator/director Chuck Jones, who did a lot of Looney Tunes (Bugs Bunny, roadrunner, etc.)
The two movies shown on the marquee while Billy was running to work were "A Boys Life" and "Watch the Skies" which were the original working titles of E.T. and Closer Encounters, respectively.
