"Mommy's brutal!" It's pretty universally known and acknowledged that Ellen Ripley (Aliens) and Sarah Connor (Terminator 2) are the top two bad-a$$ women of science fiction, but what is less commonly known is that Billy's mom is typically ranked at number three!
There was no CGI in 1984. The Gremlins were animatronic, and cost over $30,000 each. Security searched people's cars every day to make sure they weren't stolen. The original idea was to use stop motion animation for the gremlins. Special effects wizard Chris Walas wanted to use puppets. Someone at Warner Brothers thought it would be a good idea to use spider monkeys dressed in gremlin costumes. They tested this in director Joe Dante's office, and it didn't go well. For some reason, the test monkey didn't like being dressed as a gremlin, and it went nuts, destroying Dante's office. After the animal trainer got the monkey back under control, Walas said, "So, puppets?" When Warner Brothers received the first cut of the movie, they sent a note to Steven Spielberg and director Joe Dante complaining there were too many gremlins. Spielberg suggested cutting them all out and renaming the movie to "People." At least one of Phoebe Cates' screams was real. In one scene, a big cockroach crawled out in front of her, and they used her reaction in the movie. Gremlins and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom inspired the MPAA to create the PG-13 rating. These two movies were too violent for PG, but not enough for R. The original script was very violent, but Joe Dante and Steven Spielberg wanted to make it family friendly, so they changed the more violent scenes. Contrary to popular belief, there is no secret R-rated version of this movie. Near the beginning of the movie you can see a wrecked AMC Gremlin (back then, "AMC" stood for "American Motors Corporation," not "American Movie Classics.") These cars are scarce and collectible today, and are now seen as the beginning of the end for AMC. The company renamed itself "Jeep Eagle Corporation" in 1988, and merged with Chrysler in 1990, six years after the release of this movie. The dog's reaction on seeing Gizmo for the first time was genuine. It was truly startled by the appearance of the puppet. Keye Luke was 78 years old when filming began, but he looked so good they had to rely on makeup to make him look old.
Tron (1982) is crying itself to sleep after your vicious libel attack Jeff! I joke of course. CGI was an outlier product in visual effects in the 1980s. No 'normal' movie would consider using it. I'd call the water tentacle in the Abyss the 'sit up and take notice' moment, which of course was itself the dry run test of the tech for the T-1000 in T2. A movie which would have really set Hollywood chasing that tech. Even now, my opinion is that a quality director and visual effects team will consider CGI only where it is the best option for completing a particular visual effect, and will otherwise keep it as real as possible.
When the gremlin tears out the phone lines, you hear it say "Phone home", a reference to the movie "ET", which was directed by Stephen Spielberg, who was the executive producer on this film.
About time you girls reacted to this. Another all time classic & childhood favourite of mine! Gizmo is a legend! Definitely need to react to the sequel one day too, Gremlins 2: The New Batch. It’s equally great fun and personally outdoes the original by the barest of margins.
It's WELL worth seeing Gremlins II! It's not just an inferior repeat of Gremlins, it's its own film and wildly entertaining. It's not set at Christmas, so perhaps in the New Year?
Now you have to remember the scene in The Goonies, when Chunk is on the phone with the police and the deputy mention the time chunk called in a prank about "all those little creatures that multiplied if they got wet..."
The kid who sells him the Mogwai does tell him the rules, at least. But he doesn't explain the consequences! I feel that this happens a lot of the time. Especially in films, where mistakes happen, and watching the consequences unfold is what makes the story interesting to watch. But it happens in real life, too. There are rules, but sometimes the reason behind the rules is not made clear, which leads some ignorant, careless people to be reckless. "Don't get him wet" is one thing. "Don't get him wet, or else he will multiply uncontrollably" is another thing. "Don't ever, ever feed him after midnight" sounds ominous, but "Don't feed him after midnight, because if you do, he will transform from a fuzzy cutie into a scaly asshole" is a stronger deterrent. Also- "after midnight" is extremely vague. "Don't feed him between midnight and 1:00 AM" is more specific. (or whenever the cut-off is; they never seem to say!)
The orig script was Rated R , a horror movie. Then Stephen Spielberg bought the script and turned it more family friendly. In the orig script: The mother gets her head chopped off by the gremlins, all the gremlins go to McDonald's, and instead of eating the food. They eat all the customers & workers. And that's just a small part of it. Magwai in japan means " Little Monster ".
The name is supposed to be Chinese. You can't put a g next to a w in Japanese. Every other letter must be a vowel. Little monster in Japanese is "Chiisana kaibutsu."
Lovely to see our Homies so engaged and entertained by a "Christmas movie" like this one! Will somebody get Ellie a cuddly-toy Mogwai for Christmas? I can only hope so.
When mister Futterman is talking in the beginning about the concept of "gremlins" in the cars or machinery, it was an idea (mostly joking) that unexplained breakdowns or mechanical failures in equipment were because of small creatures inside it breaking things, and those were called gremlins.
The old legend, started by the UK Royal Airforce, is that small creatures called gremlins would get into the planes and cause mischief. Soon they were saying it about any machine that broke.
*RULES:* *1.* Keep them away from bright lights, especially sunlight cause it kill them *2.* Don't get them wet or they will multiply *3.* NEVER EVER feed them after midnight or they will transform into a crazed monster
I remember going to see this when I was 9. Which is probably too young but it was the 80's. I loved it. I saw Ghostbusters that same year. Fun times Gizmo is so adorable, and friendly. He has no interest in becoming a Gremlin. I do wish they explained why Gizmo was the only friendly Mogwai. For some reason the other Mogwai were already bad/dangerous even before they transformed into Gremlins. Apparently the original script was even darker/horror. I believe the dog and Billy's mom were originally supposed to die. Also originally there wasn't going to be mogwai named Stripe. Instead Gizmo was supposed to transform into a Gremlin called Stripe. That would have been interesting but very sad. I'm glad they didn't make it that dark. However the evil Mrs Deagle got what she deserved. If you pay attention to what she says when the Gremlins come to her house. It seems she thought they were actual demons there to take her soul to hell. That's definitely where she belongs. The story about Kate's fathers death was disturbing and depressing. No wonder she hates Christmas. Another fun fact: The set for Kingston Falls is the same one used for Back to the Future (1985). Both movies were filmed on the Universal Studios backlot.
Honestly, it's childhood nightmare fuel. But to this day I love it. It's campy and ridiculous but is generally funny and kind of intense at some points. Highly recommend watching as a nostalgic throwback or even experiencing it with friends for the first time!
Really? I first watched it when it came out with 8 years old, and I never had any nightmares from it, found it pretty harmless. But that may have been bc I had watched some way tougher movies already 😄 "Night of the living dead"(1968 movie) had probably already desensitized me a LOT, I definitely had a lot of nightmares from that one! my cousin should NOT have let me watch that when it came on TV 🤣🤣
Gremlins is one of those magical movies that is acceptable for both Christmas and Halloween. The popularity of this movie led to a number of similar “swarm of little creature” movies like Critters and Ghoulies
Gremlins also has elements of The Blob. A small town under attack something "alien", the doubting adults and authority figures, a young adult (or teen) couple as protagonists, even a movie theater scene. Some pretty common old school creature feature tropes.
As far as the folklore is concerned, gremlins originated in the British royal air force in WW1. Any time a piece of equipment or machinery would break down they blame it on the gremlins
Fun Fact: Chuck Jones, famous for directing many Looney Tunes cartoons and How the Grinch Stole Christmas! has a cameo at the bar drawing a picture for Billy, since he was one of the Director, Joe Dante’s biggest inspirations
i always love these cute little fur babies i always love these movies that have very cute little creatures like the numberjacks had the problem blob had me like awwwwww this little slimy blob with a very smooth and creamy texture to his slime and a very adorable voice
When America was fighting Japan in World War II, American pilots would blame all the mechanical problems of their planes on "gremlins," claiming that the Japanese put little monsters into their planes to sabotage them. Since it was 1944, I'm sure their planes had lots of problems, so I guess they needed some way to blame their enemies for it. As far as I know, that's where the idea of gremlins came from, which Billy's neighbor briefly explained when he brought up World War II.
You could tell the mom was pissed at those things if she was willing to ruin a microwave to kill one, as expensive as microwaves were in the early 80s.
I've said this before....all you girls are so pretty. Are most girls from Bulgaria attractive as y'all? All you gals look like fashion models. Anyway, may you have a wonderful Christmas!
There is a sequel (Gremlins 2 duh!). The director didn't want to make a sequel so he made a mess of a movie that turned out brilliant. I prefer Gremlins 2 over Gremlins.
I don't think I have seen this movie since the 80s. I still remember certain scenes, like the girl mentioning her dad and his...story, or the microwave bit and a few others. His mother was a badass lol. Good reaction.
Well ranked, I say.
my dad wanted to name me Sara,
& my mom goes, "Why not Sarah after Sarah Connor?"
so, I'm Sarah the Terminator LOL

@@slytheringingerwitch😂😂😂😂😂😂
This whole idea came from British RAF airmen when speaking to American soldiers.
Americans genuinely thought British pilots believed in gremlins
Or in the comments
Yes, we know that quote..
When the gremlin tears out the phone lines, you hear it say "Phone home", a reference to the movie "ET", which was directed by Stephen Spielberg, who was the executive producer on this film.
I loved this movie as a kid. I even had a little Gizmo stuffed animal.
And yes, they did make a Gizmo Furby in the 90s.
About time you girls reacted to this. Another all time classic & childhood favourite of mine! Gizmo is a legend! Definitely need to react to the sequel one day too, Gremlins 2: The New Batch. It’s equally great fun and personally outdoes the original by the barest of margins.
Ladies
Howie Mandel, comic actor, comedian, host and judge for American Got Talent is the voice of Gizmo.
The deputy never realized that would actually be more dangerous than the terrorists taking over all the Sizzler Steakhouses. 😄
The kid who sells him the Mogwai does tell him the rules, at least. But he doesn't explain the consequences!

Be sure to check out part 2 it's pretty fun !
But first, check under the bed, just to be sure.

DON'T FEED THE HOMIES AFTER MIDNIGHT
AWESOME score composed and conducted by Jerry Goldsmith. Love that "Gremlins Rag".
All the boys, including myself, had a huge crush on Phoebe Cates! Fun movie, I was 18 when this came out!
She was so hot back then.
Lovely to see our Homies so engaged and entertained by a "Christmas movie" like this one! Will somebody get Ellie a cuddly-toy Mogwai for Christmas? I can only hope so.

"A really really really old movie". Hey, I was 7 when this came out. I'm not THAT old.
You won't believe it, but Gizmo is even cuter in the sequel, which is also one of the beat sequels ever made:)
What..!?? I hope you are joking.. It’s one of the worst sequels of all time.. lol..
This will always be a heartwarming Christmas movie
The old legend, started by the UK Royal Airforce, is that small creatures called gremlins would get into the planes and cause mischief. Soon they were saying it about any machine that broke.
I can't wait to see your reaction to part two, the new batch. It's more of a comedy.❤
*RULES:*
*1.* Keep them away from bright lights, especially sunlight cause it kill them

*3.* NEVER EVER feed them after midnight or they will transform into a crazed monster
When my mum's cat had babies, one of them looked like a baby Gizmo. She is now nearly 16 but I'll always see her as my little baby Gizmo. 😻
I remember going to see this when I was 9.
Which is probably too young but it was the 80's. I loved it.
I saw Ghostbusters that same year. Fun times

Gizmo walked so Grogu could run!

dont tell me how to treat my willie.

Yep. This was the "brought down our planes in the Big One" reference was. WWI was called The Big One.
Hi homies. I love this movie and watch it every 24th December. Now watch part 2. xx
I remember watching this movie for the first time..
I did not wanted to sleep anymore, I was so afraid those gremlins were spawning under my bed.
I always love Ellies silly expressions 😘❤😍
Fun Fact: Chuck Jones, famous for directing many Looney Tunes cartoons and How the Grinch Stole Christmas! has a cameo at the bar drawing a picture for Billy, since he was one of the Director, Joe Dante’s biggest inspirations
Top Gremlin voice from Michelle at 24:43! Somebody has been eating after midnight...
The town set used in the film is the same one from Back to the Future ;) Look for the clock tower at times!
Gizmo sounds like Morris from Shang-Chi movie
Here's the thing though, midnight is the first hour of the day. Every other time is after midnight.
Hey girls , stay away from water , don't eat after midnight and stay away from the light !!!😂
I just realized something, how are the Gremlins still not multiplying if they’re wandering in snow which is made out of water?
i always love these cute little fur babies i always love these movies that have very cute little creatures like the numberjacks had the problem blob had me like awwwwww this little slimy blob with a very smooth and creamy texture to his slime and a very adorable voice
no question about it
Gizmo is the cutest creature in movie history
William shatner the twilight zone..Gremlins…best facial expressions ever lol

Everyone alive in the 1980s knows who Phoebe Cates is…..an obsession for every man and boy who saw her
You could tell the mom was pissed at those things if she was willing to ruin a microwave to kill one, as expensive as microwaves were in the early 80s.
Girls. That was bug spray. She sprayed at him.
You teach him to watch television 😂
This is one of my favorite movies of all time. But you might also want to check out Teen Wolf, and The never-ending Story.❤🎉
I wished you could find the home video version of part two, but anyway, you should check any version of it. It's purely comedic, that one.
Gremlins is considered a christmas movie tho too lol
I loved this movie as a kid!!!
The old Chinese guy is also the orphanage boss who sold Winchester's candy to the black market for cabbage and rice. (What show am I talking about? )
Ah Gremlins, my favorite Christmas movie. Loved the reactions!
Gremlins 2 is also worth checking. More tongue in cheek than the original, Sillier but still funny.

There are two references to ET in the movie.
I was 14 when this came out...one of my faves.
Have you seen Bridgett Jone’s Diary? That has New Year’s and Christmas scenes but it’s not a holiday movie per se.
Love the passion @3:25. "Bitch Die !!!" 💛
I've said this before....all you girls are so pretty. Are most girls from Bulgaria attractive as y'all? All you gals look like fashion models. Anyway, may you have a wonderful Christmas!

Una de mis favoritas Gremlins ❤🇲🇽
The *$200* he spent for the *Mogwai/Gizmo* is equivalent to like *$600* today in *2023*
There is a sequel (Gremlins 2 duh!). The director didn't want to make a sequel so he made a mess of a movie that turned out brilliant. I prefer Gremlins 2 over Gremlins.
Fun fact the word Mogwai means monster in chinese.
No it means toupee in Chinese lol, I'm jk
Elli I’m digging the Hat🌹
Best holiday movie
Phoebe Cates was a real heart throb back in the 80s. She would have made a great Homie.❤❤❤❤❤😊
I don't think I have seen this movie since the 80s. I still remember certain scenes, like the girl mentioning her dad and his...story, or the microwave bit and a few others. His mother was a badass lol. Good reaction.
