This was a very good demo! Thank you! I had never seen any of your videos until today but I am now a fan. Again thank you!
Awesome! Thank you! So glad you dropped in for a visit. We love visitors out here in Podunk!
This is the best one I’ve seen yet ! I just don’t like the idea of hot glue on the edges and sewing these makes them so much nicer ! Lol ty so much ! Liked and subscribed !
I was looking to find out how to make these and watched several before finding yours and I love that they’re sewn. Thanks for the tutorial. I’m going to make a handful now to help with my quilting projects!❤️
You are so welcome!
This is the first of your videos that I have seen. Are your quilting videos this easy to follow? I am looking forward to seeing more of your videos 😊❤.
I don't know what happened to her, but her last video was 2 years ago and her Etsy shop is closed. I found her videos very helpful too!
I see she is still posting on her blog 😊
Have been wanting to make a board
Now watching you I will make them thank you
Great! They are so handy to have. I used to use paper plates...no so handy or cute.
Great use of inexpensive materials to make design boards.
Not sure if anyone suggested it or not but foam board from the dollar store works great as well
That's a good idea if you don't have any boxes to cut up. Thanks for the idea.
I've made several using dollar store foam board. Tbe hard part was using hot glue. This looks less painful.
@@CarolmaizyI use foam board too….and I use Elmer’s glue to put on the binding ,I iron it on and it stays very well
I liked...and do like. Love the fact that you did not leave it at "glued" as so many do, but braved the stitching. It makes for a much neater finished board, I think. Appreciate your posting this. (And the "Podunik" name is cute.)
I made two using the hot glue method. THIS is so much easier and I will be using this method when I make more!
I tried hot glue too, I made a huge mess! Stitching takes a little longer but it's not as messy.
And we won't burn our fingers pressing down the fabric on hot glue
@@ibrockinrobin67 The Elmer's glue also is much flatter than the hot glue. Makes for a nicer finish!
I really like these, it would never have crossed my mind to stitch on the card board, but I guess if it is thin yet sturdy enough it would work. Thank you for the inspiration!
You're welcome, Thanks for watching.
Dividers in the laundry soap boxes are nice too!!😋👋
Great idea!
New to your channel. Great tutorial. I've made these using different materials and a hot glue gun which I didn't like. Your method is so much better!!! Thank you so much
Thank you! I didn't like the other method either for many reasons.
i use foarm core boards from the dollar tree with leftover pieces of batting instead of flannel. although I do have a massive bin of flannel that needs a use..
Thank you for this. I’ve made one with hot glue gun. Not a fan. Now THIS one makes sense. I need several so thanks again.
I agree, the hot glue is a mess. I also like to make due with what I have when I can. Glad you found it helpful!
I am glad I stop by to take a look at you and design board it's simple never though about the poster board but now I now. Thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Great use of Amazon boxes
Yes, and Amazon puts small things in huge boxes.
The binding fabric choice is perfect!!!
Thank you Mary!
@@podunkpretties Nice quick response!! I was impressed at the tidy sewing area. The stacked up boards are so pretty and organized. A mysterious tornado came through my own sewing space....
@@marykowalski7349 Hello Neighbor! You must close to me because that tornado hit my sewing room too!
@@podunkpretties 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I made two today. So happy I found your tutorial. It was so easy to follow. Love it
Wonderful! Glad it worked out for you! We got some big boxes in the mail this week so I'm planning to make some that will be about 20 x 20. Happy Stitching!
Just found this - making my 1st boards & am not disappointed! 😀
Love this! I knew there must be an easier, less expensive way! Thank you! I love that you use flannel! I might use pretty tape on my edges.
Somebody gave me a stack of blocks of flat packing foam I think I will use for this, but will have to iron well before binding on it, and then finger press onto it. Thanks a ton for the idea!
Let me know how the packing foam works, sounds like a great way to recycle! Love the idea! Thanks!
Thank You, I found this very helpful. Can't wait to make one!
Thankyou so easy to follow, been wanting to make these boards, my project for today.❤
Thank Lea Anne! I have the poster board cut, ready to go, but haven’t put a border around the boards yet.
That was terrific thank you. I have used sticky board but it is so expensive. This certainly fits in my budget. I’ve shared, liked and subscribed. ❤️🌺
Glad it was helpful!
I didn’t know you could elmer’s glue like this. I will definitely try!
I made of several of these some years ago....I used box cardboard for the base, quilt batting scraps instead of the flannel, and ironing board fabric for the back side. I sewed the batting, ironing board fabric on 3 sides and slipped the cardboard in and closed of the. They work great for a light pressing if needed and have held up for years.
I used them for Christmas gifts for our sewing circle.
They are very handy. I 've used mine for pressing boards also. Never thought about giving them as gifts!
Oh! That is a great idea!! I'm going to try it that way. How did you close them up? I like the colored trim but it would be easy to sew strip borders to the batting or flannel. Then if the board gets flimsy, I could open and replace it. Thank you for the idea.
I wonder if you could stitch the binding ALL the way around, then flip it over, place the board (form or card) on top with more flannel or batting or even fabric, then glue down binding only on the back. I love the stitching on the front & have a walking foot but don't want to sew through any thickness. (fussy machine)
Thank You..great idea & demo.
💜🧡♥️💙💛👍👍👍
Wow that is cool. Love your stack of design boards
I dint know how I've never seen your videos nervous. I just subscribed so I don't miss anymore. I've been wanting to make some boards but haven't had the kick in the 0ants I needed. Maybe I'll do it tomorrow. I've wondered about sewing them...I'm just too lazy to dig out the glue gun. 😆 Thank you for sharing this. And also for suggesting the flannel.
Excellent video, enjoyed watching (you are a very good teacher, thank you) and I will be making several of these.
Thank you for this wonderful video on making design boards. Love your method. I burn myself rushing to use the glue gun and do not like it. This is much better.
Your sewing area is so pretty.
Thank you. My sewing room is a constant work in progress. It's taken 30 yrs to get it to this point. Most of it has been done in the last 11 years, after all the kids were out of the house and I had more money.😂 I had the same problem with getting burned and the spiderwebs of glue, GRRR....that's why I tried sewing the binding like a quilt. I'll admit that I was shocked when it actually worked. using cardboard was due to being a thrifty hillbilly from Podunk. Thanks for stopping by! Feel free to stop by anytime!❤
Amazon always has boxes
Thank U so very mush😊 your very engaging a lot of fun! Now I’ll have my own design boards 🎉
I made myself one a few years ago. I used some leftover foam board, when we built our home! This way you could put pins in!
Yep I use pins in these if needed. I'm always trying to find ways make things instead of buying. I could be a millionaire and still upcycle, it's in my blood🤣!
@@podunkpretties Me too. Can't stop upcycling, not so much to save money, but to save the environment. Keep up the good work. 👏👏🙏👍
You have a great set up, cut, grab a board, take it to sewing machine
Thank you for this video. I was just about to buy one. Great video!!!
I am so impressed. These are very expensive to purchase. 🥰
They are! I'm making some bigger ones this week with some amazon boxes.
Thank you for sharing your tip. I love saving money. I use felt for my cross stitch and its a good idea with the cardboard ty. I'm a new subscriber now.
You're welcome. I too love saving money where I can. Thanks for subscribing!
awesome and well organize. Thank you for sharing
Love your sewing set up! Wow you have lots of pretty boards!
Very interesting, seems to be so practical. Thanks for sharing!
Such a beautiful creation. I will try it. I hope mine turn out as beautiful and neat as yours. Thanks!!!
Genius! Now I’m looking for a huge box! Lol the ones you buy for so much money are actually the same thing I’m sure but they don’t fit very much. By the time I add my alphabets it’s filled up, lol. Thank you. Just need something to get from cutting table to sewing machine with all these tiny pieces. Like you said it doesn’t have to be that heavy. If it needed to be reinforced I’m sure two nice pieces of cardboard taped together with a good sturdy tape, it could hold up a 10 pound ham! Hungry cuz missed out on Thanksgiving last year cuz of pandemic. Yes, like your cheap out, don’t ever hear that much. Lol thanks again.
Glad to see you back. Missed you
I always use my iron on linen. Great video, I just signed up for all of your videos.
Niiiice way to make a design board thanks!
thank you! inspiring video!
You're so welcome! It tickles me pink to hear you got value from my thrifty-ness.
Love this tutorial. Thanks so much! Subscribed!
Awesome! Thank you! Just popped over to your channel, subbed and looking forward to seeing you quilt on your frame. I have a midarm on a frame, been using it for 11 yrs, time to upgrade.
@@podunkpretties - The Moxie is a MidArm ... 15" throat space so it may be too small for you but checkout the stitchout's. I free motion almost everything. Thanks Sister!
Great idea the way you sewed yours! The cardboard is a great idea. Love it! Also love how you organized your boards. I am working on my first board. Also I keep a roller tape in my sewing room to roll over my cutting mat & blocks & even my carpet especially when my house is dry thread is hard to get the threads off of everything.
Great tutorial thank you 😊
You’re welcome 😊
It’s fun to listen to your voice! Now when I read your blog, which I love, I can use your voice rather than mine!
Hope you are good at the southern draw...HAHA!
What machine are you using? Thanks for this video

First time watching. Loved it
Thank you
If you sew thru cardboard you might want to consider using 14g or 16g jean needles .... That was what we used when we sewed in a commercial shop on leather and other thick things.
Thanks for sharing this video. I tried the glue gun method and made a terrible mess! So I decided to try to sew the binding on just like I do my quilt binding (sew both sides) and voila! I also used white flannel, but used the foam board (cost $3.00 each from a dollar store).
I really like your design boards. I will be making some of these.
Glad you like them! Happy stitching!
Thanks for a great demo! I'm going to try and make a few. I just got into quilting but haven't done "patterns" yet. I can see where this is helpful for arranging the fabric squares... sort of like a painting artists' board! 🙂
I like your pincushion
Thank you! I'm s sucker for the dresden quilt block. I made it "on fly" a few years ago.
I like your method. Thanks for the video 😊👍💕
You’re welcome 😊
Rock On great job.
Thanks!
Great idea!!
Thank you for sharing!! I’ve got some allergies that act up with the smells that can come off of cardboard. Idk how long cardboard can smell b/c I can’t tolerate it (headaches). Do you have any alternates?
Ok. I see foam board & packing foam. Will have to experiment b4 making, but that could work. (Yours is the 1st “how to” I’ve seen on design boards.)
Thanks!
I've not sewn these with anything other than cardboard. If you sew the foam boards version I would be interested if it works. Happy Stitching!
Super video! Thanks!
Glad you liked it!
Very nice!
It’s nice thank you for sharing
Thank you and you're welcome!
Nice video. I’ve been cross stitching lately, and I make these because my embroidery floss will stick to them. I use sticky board, but never thought of cardboard so I’m going to try it. Thanks for the idea.
I never thought of using them for embroidery. Great tip, thanks for sharing!
i use a corkboard for the floss
So the Elmer's is just for basting. Good!
Yes, it holds things in place while you sew it in place.
Can fusible fleece be ironed to the cardboard?
Wow where were you when I as struggling with a hot glue gun and making mine. I never saw anyone sew thru cardboard. I have to try this.
I was right here waiting on you to find me. It's about time! 😅😅 Thanks for watching! See you soon!
What a nifty or should I say thrifty adaptation of the quilt board.
Thank you. Quilting can be an expensive hobby. I like cutting the costs when possible.
Can you use duct tape instead of fabric around the board? I have multiple rolls of cute duct tape left over from duct tape wallets the kids made ... I want to use the tape up.
I used painters tape, works for me.
Question is cardboard easier to see through ? And do you just use this cause it’s free or is it any better than the foam board ? Ty again so much !
I'm all about saving money and repurposing when I can and helping others do the same. I've not tried sewing the foam board. I'm sure the foam board is sturdier but does it need to be?
Wonderful ❤️ what are the things behind your boards laying on the table behind. I love using what I have. Not needing to buy anything. I need to go get my boxes before the hubby throws them away. Lol
I'm not sure what your talking about. My cutting table is behind the boards. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
@@podunkpretties I think I figured it out. Are there small ironing mats behind the sewing machine at the end of the video? I think I may need to make a couple of them. Thank you.
Yes! I have a video about how I make them! ruclips.net/video/o9_JHpXgYRs/видео.html
@@podunkpretties thank you.
Did you add the batting? Did I miss it?
Can Christmas gift boxes be used?
I've never used them so I don't know. You could give it a try and see.
This can be saw in any domestic machine?
I haven't tested every machine or every cardboard. You will need to test it for yourself. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.💗💗
What do you set your iron too when working with fusible applique? 😊
It depends on the fusible being used. I use Heat N Bond Lite and the instructions say a medium heat no steam.
Thank you for this wonderful video. Love that you keep it real. I was thinking I might use batting instead of flannel. Your thoughts?
You're Welcome! Cotton batting works great, I've used it.
What kind of machine do you sew these on?
Genius
This is just what I needed. Just one question, instead of flannel can I use batting? Thank you for this tutorial 😊
You're welcome! Sure, you can use whatever you want. Some battings hold better than others. I think cotton batting would work best. I used it for a large design wall for years.
@@podunkpretties thanks a bunch 😊
What is your limit of thickness (cardboard) you sew thru??
I have no limit, but I do a test before using a new thickness. Each sewing machine is different, some can handle more than others. If you do a test I would suggest manually lowering the needle through the cardboard.
I used a piece of iron on interfacing instead of flannel
Well that's awesome!. As long as it holds the fabric that's all that matters. Using what you have is always the best plan. 💗
What is that around your machine?
If you're talking about the blue part, it's my sewing table. It's an old vanity my uncle made for my aunt back in the 80"s. I cut a hole in it to fit my machine.
If you have to buy, foam boards from dollar store is the cheapest way to go.
Stay away from UPS stores for boxes...They are ridiculous in prices. Walmart has boxes but Poster Board is better for these and a piece of batting then binding
Can you sew poster board? I prefer the thrifty free cardboard and sewing them. Boxes are free at Walmart and the Dollar store. I only use poly batting most of the time due to allergies but yes cotton batting would work. Thanks!
@@podunkpretties I don't sew around it, I used a glue gun and I apologize, NOT poster Board but the Foam Board in craft section, but like you, the cardboard is best and free...LOL
Sewing on cardboard? Who knew!? Thanks.
You're Welcome! Works like a charm. I've been using these for years.
Has anyone tried sewing thru the dollar tree foam board?
Much easier than using a glue gun. Burn myself every time. Thanks for the tip!
Me too! And the stringy mess....GRR.
I made one with glue gun and it was a hot mess😻
Yep same here!
Why did I never think to use regular white glue?
I used washing tape
I've seen others do that and also pretty duct tape.
No
if he gets it from work...it's technically not free, it cost the company, 🤔
LOL! I should have been clear he is not stealing cardboard, it's trashed by the company. If he were stealing I wouldn't boast about it online. Many of my old coworkers watch my channel.
These are cute, but not practical for me.
Thanks.
I'm curious why you say they aren't practical? You wouldn't use them? No place to store them?
