Elizabeth, rightly, gets praised for her mesmerising voice, but never for her beautiful melodies. The melody in ‘Teardrop’ is so memorable. Go have a listen to the instrumental version. It’s just isn’t anywhere near as good.
23 April 1991,I was walking by the Teatro Opera in Buenos Aires and I see the posters advertising the show for Cocteau Twins. I hadn´t ever heard anything of their stuff; all I knew was that they were a band of the 8o´s and British and darkish and dense and unlike any other. But I didn´t know just how much.I hung around the city centre until show time and bought a ticket.I was amazed to see a full house.Amazed that they had no drummer and was mesmerized by Guthrie´s sound and Elizabeth´s voice. Matter of fact, a guy kept on shouting to her "I love you Elizabeth!". And just as it had started, that massive wall of sound ended. They left without any encores and I was swiftly out in the street once more, walking zombie like back home. One of those shows you never forget.
I heard this song first when I was 11 years old and it hit me in the heart. I’m now about to have a baby and have been through a lot in my pregnancy and listening to this song again has made me connect with the baby inside me in a way I have no words for. I’m guessing that’s what Robin Guthrie saw when he asked her to join the Cocteau Twins on that fateful night, 40 years ago, when he spotted her dancing, on her own, in that club in Grangemouth. Pure bliss.

For me that moment was way back in January 1983. The afternoon before the first CT-gig on the continent, Elizabeth entered the venue and just asked for a cup of tea. Well, no problem whatsoever. But then she pulled out her wallet to pay for it. Heaven's sake, that's courtesy of the house darling! Apparently in the UK she was not used to that, but right on that very moment she made me melt and gained an absolute lifetime fan.
I will always Love you Liz. Your ghostly voice that carried my heartbreaks over the many years I cried and fell apart, kept me alive long enough to live and see my children grow up. Thanks for that my dear old friend. I grow old with you.

Kyle Knockaert sorry but no.... Garlands is raw and strange .... for me the best album they made .... shure after that they made beautiful music but they never got the deep side of Garlands....
@Dean Ween That's a pretty bold assessment to make. Her vocal range and style expanded throughout the Cocteau Twins later records. Garlands has been one of my favorites for over 30 years. I still appreciate how raw and dark that album is, and not in a pretentious way. And one shouldn't just lump it together with stereotypical post-punk bands. They defied categories musically and were way more interesting than most. They had substance and were vastly original.
after she took vocal lessons in the mid-80s initially to learn how to preserve her voice while touring, she learned how to use her upper register and sing sweeter and lighter, dropping a lot of those Garlands-era mannerisms, all the yelping and hiccuping and shouting. I reckon she refined that even more by the time she worked with Massive.

My family hated this song - I grew into my teens and discovered how much I loved it. I'm now 33 and I can't wait to hear it live in New York next month... Imagine coming from benefits and free school meals to seeing it in New York.
What a boss. When I heard the intro I thought "oh she's gonna sing it almost an octave lower because she's old" and then se performs the song higher than original because why not I guess

Liz Fraser"s vocals are hauntingly beautiful. Her previous work as one half of This Mortal Coil , (from the 80`s,) was so far ahead of its time that I only finally felt time had caught up when their tracks were used in the film, Lovely Bones (2009)
This literally brings a tear tomy eye! Beautiful. Sooo beautiful and Elizabeth sounds jaw dropping fantastic! Wish I could have seen her live myself! 👍
Beautiful rendition of a beautiful song. I could sit down and have this song on loop and simply sail away, thanks for posting, and thanks Liz for an amazing performance ❤
As I understand it, Fraser created the lyrics as the band played the music. It is a paean to her lover who had drowned the same year this song was recorded. It is an act of genius.
57 years old and still the voice of an angel

So nice to see her on the stage, again! I saw a Cocteau Twins show, back in 1996 here in São Paulo, Brazil. All love for Massive Attack and Liz Fraser.
I just LoVE this Woman...&I can't watch on without thinking bout the Lyrics, "Tears on the Fire" ...a Song for Jeff Buckley XX A Life well lived Beautiful Lady😎 Thankyou for being the most *EXQUISITE VOICE* of this century & beyond! A voice much appreciated by an extremely Humble ol'bag Musician, 60yrs this year&with all my Love&Respect&Thanks💙Jennie Biz XX
She's incredible I must say..... I hope now you all can agree that Elizabeth is among the greatest musician of all time.... what's your favourite Elizabeth song?
She has turned into the most adorable possible version of a woman her age 😍
that's so ageist, sorry i'm just bitter coz i'm getting old
Ada Harrison yes
She reminds me of a friend I had a long time ago...raccoons and ghosts and swings and busted waterbeds. Oh, the sowing of oats is a sweet time of life
crabbtrixexp - Well, (physical) age IS a reality, so there is no crime in speaking of it or referring to it (or using the Word - especially kindly) … &, of course, it’s the SAME for Everyone, so let’s not get too hung up on the simple expression of that truth -
Eh
Lol
My family hated this song - I grew into my teens and discovered how much I loved it. I'm now 33 and I can't wait to hear it live in New York next month... Imagine coming from benefits and free school meals to seeing it in New York.
What a boss. When I heard the intro I thought "oh she's gonna sing it almost an octave lower because she's old" and then se performs the song higher than original because why not I guess
I caught only a few bars on a TV music show & searched high & low till I tracked teardrop by massive attack down.without equal
вкуснотища! Спасибо Вам! Ваши песни и эта в том числе перевернули мою жизнь! в хорошую сторону. дякую!
goodies! Thanks you! Your songs, including this one, have turned my life upside down! in a good way. Thanks!!!!!
and a special thank you to Elizabeth Fraser
Liz has been in my life since my teens; Cocteau twins pink opaque album,I have all her 🎶 CDs,saw them live in NYC Roseland ballroom 1994, fantastic, she's lovely and sings like an 😇 angel!
Liz Fraser"s vocals are hauntingly beautiful. Her previous work as one half of This Mortal Coil , (from the 80`s,) was so far ahead of its time that I only finally felt time had caught up when their tracks were used in the film, Lovely Bones (2009)
A voice of perfection, a voice of an angel- She never fails to move me.
MY GOd! Liz is still beyond amazing. Whoever could vote down on this brilliance is unwelcome.
Love your voice, Elizabeth!
Damn still flawless!!! Can't wait to see her with Massive Attack this Friday! 🤗
After seeing this performed live my life changed, it was that powerful.
Wow😎
One of the best songs on one of the best albums of all time
This literally brings a tear tomy eye! Beautiful. Sooo beautiful and Elizabeth sounds jaw dropping fantastic! Wish I could have seen her live myself! 👍
Amazing spiritual performance....I listened to every note sung like temple bowl tone..so good..thank you ..!
Thinking of Jeff whilst writing these lyrics.
I legit started crying when I read this. I’ve been emotional, lately, but yeah...
A beautiful thing.
the 80s brought the best voices from the entire history of international music. Liz is one of them. Cool and beyond time.
