  • 4.0 2003 Ford Explorer Transmission Replacement. Rare Video on how this is done. Its a lot of work and this is probably why no one has did a video on this. Not to many videos on this particular model/ year on RUclips. 2002- 2005 ish. Enjoy. ~~Sorry about the shaky video. If I'd thought my channel going to have 20k subs I'd would have used a tripod~~

    For anyone watching this in 2023. Instead of trying to loosen the bolts on the crossmember and risk breaking them. Put a wrench on the bolt side and take the nut off of the other side. Once you get the nut off hit the bolt with a hammer and it will back out easily. Also pro tip if you take the intake off the top of the engine you can easily reach the top 4 housing bolts from the engine bay then you just gotta do the sides and bottom housing bolts. Don't unplug your starter unless you plan on un hooking your battery first just take two bolts out and hang it to the side and you can get to your torque converter nuts there should be 4 nuts. Youll have to get a good sized ratchet or breaker bar and i believe the crank pulley bolt is a 18mm.

    I take my hat off to you. This has to be the toughest job to do on the floor. I have done a few with a regulator floor jack at first then I brought a transmission jack. Much,much better with the trans jack. I think the reason I stop doing them is because I got tired of smelling like transmission fluid. Anyone who has worked on auto transmissions knows what I mean.

The steps and effort shown in the video were valuable to realize the endurance needed for the work. I’ve had mine since buying it in 2010, first time ever I’ve seen “check transmission” msg appear today 😔 I’m not mechanically savvy with cars and I’m scared this is gonna be an expensive repair without even knowing what’s actually wrong, today I was driving and noticed that my Explorer will just rev continuously when trying to shift from 2nd to 3rd gear, Is this an indication that maybe the transmission is not entirely broken but has a minor problem? Or am I now looking at buying a whole new gearbox? Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

    I got a question, so I’m getting my transmission rebuilt and I will be putting it back in, I made sure that transmission was fully seated and then I got it flush with motor. No binding or nothing, I’m trying to figure out if I need to space torque converter from flex plate or pull it all the way against it. I also did my rear main seal and there was a 1-1/4 spacer to 1-1/2 maybe not to sure, between crank and flex plate. Sorry it’s a 97 ford ranger 4.0l. It been a year since it has been in but I believe it was all the way against the flex plate with no spacers. If you can please help me

    Many thanks sir! Question - did you replace the transmission cooler/radiator, or did you just flush it? I'm ready to pull and fix or rebuild my 2004 5R55S from an Eddie Bauer with 111K miles. It's leaking at the front of the case. All was working fine, saw smoke from the engine bay, saw oil leaking from around the valve covers, but that was a head-fake because the trannie started slipping and saw red fluid (foamy-grey) puddling under the vehicle. Ugh... Now reverse is gone. I'd like to know how low the fluid is - but no - no dipstick! This thing has more sensors than a space shuttle, but no dipstick.I have a Ford Shop Manual - best $35 ever spent on eBay. I've pulled a transmission before - like a 100 years ago (well, in '82). My '72 Nova needed a new trannie. By myself in 1/2 day, I dropped it, took it to the local salvage, gave them $75 and my old one for one from the yard, bolted it in and all was well... I have a feeling this won't be the same experience.

      TVWXMAN32 sorry I always called it linkage but wear the gear shift cable connects to the trans, I got the clip off that you showed in the video with the screwdriver but the part that stays on the transmission there's a nut, when I put a socket on it, it went through all the gears and then I applied more pressure to my ratchet and something snapped inside the trans and now it just spins and I can't loosen the nut so I can switch out that arm to the new trans. I probably have to drop the pan and work my way up, but was just wondering if you had the same problem?

    There is nothing more important when installing a auto tranny than to really pay attention to whats going on with the converter and the spacing and all that stuff, you can really mess things up in a hurry,i have installed a few motors in my time and as ive gotten older i realized how lucky i have been, i got a brand new motor siting here at home i will be installing in October (too hot right now) and i decided to do a lot of studying on how to go about it and all that, i dont wanna be that guy thats on his fifth installation and hoping and praying "it will work this time" lol
    Im doing a custom thing thats why im adamant about being careful, you know your stuff well but i put this up for other people as i am learning all this myself.
    I used to think that all you had to do with any motor was put that tranny bellhousing to the engine, tighten everything up and you were done when in reality you need to make sure that converter is "seated" properly on the pump or you will have major problems, you gotta make sure if you are doing a custom project you have the correct flexplate (this is a really common mistake people make with disastrous consequences), gotta make sure you put sealer on your flexplate bolts and a few other things, not trying to scare anyone but you just have to be careful and pay attention and not be on your 8th beer when you do this,preferable sober ha ha ha ha
    Great video man,very detailed,interesting how the access point is thru the starter, most trannys ive seen have a inspection plate on bottom where you would conduct all that business but every model is different,whatever works is my motto,you are pretty brave to do this all by yourself but Ive done it too, sometimes there is no help available.

Question for you, I'm in the middle of an engine swap on a 5.4l F150 and I'm struggling with the top 2 bolts on the engine to bell housing. Planning on getting some clearance and coming at it with the extension, but I'm wondering if I should plan on both cross members coming off or if I can get enough wiggle with one or the other. Any advice from your experience?

    • @FixingWithPassion

    Your video was a great help . Thank you for your efforts.
    Just one question though.
    I pulled the motor and transmission out in one piece as i had to do the timing chains on my 98 4.0lt Explorer.
    Reconnected trani to motor outside the car and now have re- install all items back in the car.
    The motor is running well and quiet with the new timing chains , but the transmission dose not engage in drive or reverse.
    I have not done any work to the trani other than disconnect and reconnect it from the motor.
    Have i missed something ????
    Your comments would be greatly appreciated.

    I have Forward Forward Planetary Carrier 6 pinion that while pulling out of case the needle bearings fell apart. By looking at one side of the race that stayed connected to the Planetary Gear bore, it looks the race is staked by the OD. Does that mean I have to buy the whole Forward Planetary Carrier 6 pinion or can I just buy the bearing?

    • @FixingWithPassion

      You might be able to get just a bearing....but it might be better just to get the entire unit. Go on e-bay...and look for parts you need. Tons of tranny parts cheep! I go there ll the time ;)

Probably a good price considering I might have a heck of a time finding just the thrust bearing. I'm also getting a new Over Drive Drum and OD Planetary Gear Set. Hey I'm having an issue and I'm hoping you might possibly be able to help me, I am replacing a motor on a 2008 Explorer and I'm afraid the torque converter isn't fully seated into the transmission. the converter to flex plate studs are flush with the bell housing but the center piece of the converter sticks past the side of the bell housing by about an inch do you happen to remember if this was the case with yours? At around 27:00 into the video you show taking it apart and at first in the video it looks further recessed but then a few seconds later it looks like the studs are flush with the edge of the bell housing. Any information from you or anybody else would be greatly appreciated.

    • @FixingWithPassion
      @FixingWithPassion  6 лет назад

      Well when you tighten the torque converter bolts it will move 1/2 or so. So there is some wiggle room. Just spin it and see if it feels ok.

    • @cavalier_ranch
      @cavalier_ranch 6 лет назад

      I finally figured it out, the smallest splined shaft that comes out of the transmission must have gotten pulled out a bit and somehow it gets jammed and doesn't go back in. I found the solution here: www.explorerforum.com/forums/index.php?threads/torque-converter-install-problems.274525/ its a different year but same transmission. I spent 2 days putting the engine in and out because of this. If you have a way to pin this response or link to that forum it might be helpful to someone else in the future. Thanks for your help!

    did you take the top bolts out through the back or the side?

    • @FixingWithPassion
      @FixingWithPassion  5 лет назад

      Back side. I had to reach up with extensions to the top....way...........up there!I probably had a 2 foot extension on my ratchet (1/2) which worked better... Don't even try a 3/8.

    • @dre04mach
      @dre04mach 5 лет назад

      Finally got the damn thing swapped. You're right, 3/8s didn't have the strength to break that loose and I fear I would have broken the universal joint had I put a pipe on the ratchet. The amount of extensions needed made me want to go buy a single piece 2 ft extension - in 1/2 in - because of the slop inherent to using 5 extensions...
      On the other hand, the other difference I saw from your video, I had no access hole by the starter to take those bolts off, mine was on the driver side of the car, covered by a rubber plug. - This is in a 2004 Lincoln Aviator. Last but not least, the aviator has a ton of extra insulation, that eats into the space you have...
      I did this on my lift... the fact that you did it on your back on the ground... my hat's off to you sir! :-)

      Hey one more question! (My friend and I getting ready to tackle this in two weeks ;). Obviously many of these Explorers have higher miles on them now and mine is no exception (200k+, but body / everything else still mint and working!)... Your trans obviously had some hard part failure that you could detect before removal... Mine, is just the missing 2nd/OD (servo bore / bands)... Other than those, everything works quiet and smooth. Fluid pretty dark, though. QUESTION... Did you replace torque converter. I've priced my stuff and sure would like to not have to spend extra $200 if not absolutely needed... But, don't wanna destroy my rebuilt unit. What's the real story on torque converter replace? Thanks again, and hope your holidays are great!

    I bought a rebuilt 5r55w transmission with rebuilt torque converter for my 2002 Explorer. It holds 12.7 qt per shop manual. Trans shop said dump 12 qts before installing. Shop manual said to start with 9 qts (Online ETE pdf instructions says 8 for what it's worth, then add...). I put in 9 prior to install, checked it and it is running out of the plug when I check it. I flushed and blew out the cooler prior to install. I called the trans shop and the manager said it needs the 12, to add 3 more qts, but I'm afraid of overfilling. I notice the transmissions they stock (in house rebuilds) are light gray, but mine, (they had to order...core? rebuilt trans?) is painted dark metallic gray. I'm wondering if the converter was prefilled and the manager doesn't realize it? Should I force 3 more quarts in? do I have air pocket? I hate to add when it is running out when I remove center plug running at warm idle in park. I think it is level on my lift. I drove it about 5 miles to circulate and it shifted fine, still checks overfull with only 9 quarts in it. I don't want to ignore the manager and void the warranty though. What do I do?

    • @FixingWithPassion
      @FixingWithPassion  8 лет назад

      You can't over fill it. The transmission has a plug on the bottom of the pan. You pump fluid in the transmission while the engine is running getting up to normal temp, you let the extra fluid drip back out until it stops.

    • @mousetoad7040
      @mousetoad7040 8 лет назад

      Why would it only take 9 quarts then if the capacity is 12.7? The transmission shop says I'll burn it up and void the warranty if I don't put 12 in. I put 9 in through the sensor hole before installing. I ran it to circulate it with the intention to top it off with 3 more qts. I checked it while running at normal temp and fluid was running out as if overfull...with only 9 quarts! Air pocket? My theory is that maybe they ordered this transmission from another rebuilder and it was dyno tested or the torque converter was prefilled?

    • @FixingWithPassion
      @FixingWithPassion  8 лет назад

      Just fill it up until it stops dripping out of the drain plus. You cant F it up that's what its designed for ;) Not the side plug!!! The bottom pan plug.

    • @MouseFrogToad
      @MouseFrogToad 7 лет назад

      I didn't add any more since it appears over full, or when I take the center plug out, some runs out. I don't know why it only took 9 quarts, but the level is still the same each time I checked it. I haven't burned it up by not adding the 3 remaining quarts as warned by the shop. must have already had 3 in it prior to me adding the 9.

    Old? I traded my 2003 Sport Trac 4.0 when it had 249,000 miles on it. It ran perfect, never leaked a drop of fluid, and the transmission certainly didn't have a problem either even though I'd haulded heavy trailers (3,000 lbs) thousands of miles. I only traded it because I had moved to a location where it snowed, and I needed 4WD or AWD, and my Sport Trac was only 2 WD.
