I absolutely love Obenauf's! It is made in a small town not far from my home town. The Obenauf's are extremely humble and amazing people. Glad to see their product getting some recognition!
Ikr 😏
I watched it and thought it went by fast. This the type of stuff I like. I have RUclips red for exactly these types of videos. I don’t watch your videos most of the time. I playlists them, go to black screen then listen as I’m going down the road. I’m in the truck non stop for 2 weeks at a time so that’s a lot of listening time. I do this all day everyday for the channel that go into detail for topics I like. When I’m on my 10 hour break, I watch the ones that have something I want to see that’s when I do my likes. I don’t want to be tempted to look at the screen while I’m sitting or trying to skip commercials while driving.
I definitely agree with your comment about our throw away society. I have several pairs of quality hiking boots, and I plan to have those guys last me for many years, so I treat them about once a month whether I've used them or not. Thanks for the video, and the instruction.
Just got to say Cody that I'm really enjoying you videos keep up the great work :-) at times like these I need to smile and watch your homesteading video helps with that and lighten my day.
Love your videos. I have learned so much already and can't wait to see whatever you post next. Am now debt free after watching your videos. Should be looking for property in the next year or two. Can't wait to start living the good life.
BEAUTIFUL pair of boots! I can only dream about something so incredible. Just bought my first can of Obenauf's. Can't wait for it to arrive. Thank you.
This is a great topic . Ive never paid attention to my boots other than waxing the tip or changing the inner soles also never seen boots that are screwed in the bottom sole . It did remind me as well to be careful of using flammable cleaning products on the boots . Thank you
I love the guitar in your opening... so calming..
I just read in the comments you're uploading now! I can't wait! By the way Cody, I loved your adventure van. I just bought a 95 e150 w a 351 and 3.55 rear. Can pull 12,000. It's awesome...has an electric rear seat that goes down into a bed and 4 captains chairs. I may modify in the future but I've had it one whole day and can't wait to take my two young boys fishing and camping in it!
I have a pair of Adam's Boots and I have used both Obenauf's LP and the Adam's Boot Grease. What I've found is that the Adam's makes the leather softer and more supple, but offers a little less on the protection side. I work in construction, and my boots are routinely saturated with water and covered with mud all day, to say nothing of sharp rebar edges and cement powder and the like. I find myself reconditioning my boots every other week or so, and I don't wear them every day. My routine is to Obenauf's every time, but every 3rd or 4th time, I smear a little Adam's inside and out before applying the LP.
I have been doing construction for a decade now. Only recently have I started appreciating good boots. And by good boots I mean something not from Wal-Mart. I bought my first pair of Red Wings a few years ago and I've been looking for a new pair of boots for the past few weeks. But one thing that has bothered me was a lack of knowledge when it comes to boot care & maintenance. Like you said in the video, it's kind of a lost art (at least where I'm at). Even at Red Wings shop, they just dunk them in an oil tank. There is no regard for proper cleaning and care as you have showed. So to enlighten myself, I've been looking for a video like this one (harder to find than you might think). So I want to thank you for sharing your knowledge and your time. I appreciate it more than you might think. Great to see people that still take pride in their work!
I've just got into boots and bought my first 'proper pair' which are also Red Wings, did you find they lasted well? Did they fit really nicely after the break in?
I live in Hawaii, in the city. I literally don't have a use for boots here, but theses videos make me want a custom pair. They looks so fulfilling.
I am saving up for a nice pair of whites boots or a pair of adams... I have been wearing justin boots for as long as I can remember and it'll be a strange transition but worth it. I have had the same pair of cowboy pull on workboots for about 6 years now and have had new soles put on proper by a cobbler around here and all I have to say is; If you put time and care into your boots, they will last you as long as you need them, a pair of 200 dollar boots can get done what you need, but a pair of custom boots will get done what you need as comfortable as possible.
got a pair of White's Smokejumpers in 87 while doing timber stand exams anf firefighting in the Swan valley. $180. In '88 added a pair of White's Cowboy-packers while on a trailcrew in the Bitterroot. $240. Worth every penny. Saved me some sprained ankles and mayby worse while coming down under reserve parachutes. Wore them every day for 20 years. Excellent.
Thanks for the art of boot care . Love the message.
Love our videos. I use Nikwax, which is a similar consistency to your LP wax, on my Hoggs of Fife boots and it clumps in the seams as in your video. When she's not looking use Mrs Wranglerstar's hair drier (if you have such a thing) and the wax melts just enough to go deep into the seam and not sit on the surface to gather dirt. Keep up the good work.
$600 for a pair of boots? Use that hairdryer right in front of her to show her you are committed to handling your business! 😁 I use my hairdryer when doing upkeep on my hub's boots all the time.
Hi Cody.
The way i do it is clean and steam, then walnut oil on the inside, beeswax+tupertine+walnut on the outside, and a final coat of pure carnauba wax.
But now i use synthetic Asolo boots, as they are lighter, equally durable with much less mantinance, and still you can kick down a mountain with them.
Best Regards.
Used british army combat boots foe years, from the old dmf ammo boots to my most recent pair of 4 years, there is an old saying that old army boots do not break in, its your feet that break in, l.o.l. In the woods in all seasons, wood management, terrible bramble clearing and walking the fields in all weathers. Chalk and flint on the english downs is hard going on boots,I always give my boots a brush every day and dubbin regularly. When I was younger, I was in an army mountain rescue unit as the medic, then I wore Italian climbing boots made by scarpa, still got an old pair, 42 yrs old but the combat boots better for rough woodland work. I was salivating over your logging boots, but $500 equates to about £300 and I dont carry a lot with about 10miles a day walking about at the most . I get your point about weight of boots and army combat boots are just that, tanks for feet, at 65 your boots would outlast me and nobody wants to walk in dead mans boots. Good video as boots are very important to outdoor guys. Grace and Peace to you and yours Cody.
My wife and I look forward to watching your videos every night. She literally gasped with horror when you used your nice shirt as a rag! A proper shop has shop rags strategically placed throughout it :)
I've always used Propert's leather cream & polish, and I've got western boots from Luchese, Dan Post & Tony Lama that I've had for nearly 20 years and are on their 4th and even 5th sets of soles now! That's not to say that other brands aren't as good or even better than Properts, but I started using Properts when I first went to work at an Acme Boot Factory Outlet store just a few days after my 18th birthday, and Properts was the brand we carried and the brand that I learned the most about. After working there and later at a Corral West store in Boise, ID I've got enough Properts leather conditioner and polishing cream to last me a lifetime!
My favorite Properts product is there polishing cream. Unlike the popular Kiwi Brand and similar waxy polishes, the Properts polish is a cream that combines leather conditioner, polish and leather die all in one bottle. 2% of the polish is actually leather die in what ever color your using, and instead of just covering over scratches it actually re-dies the leather back to the proper color. One word of caution though, ALWAYS wear rubber gloves when applying Properts polishing cream to your boots, because that 2% die that's so good for making scratches disappear will die your hands just as effectively as it dies your boots!
Yeap, taking care of your foot ware is important. I too had the chance to learn growing up. My dad was a 29 year Army Vet. I spent 10 years int eh Army myself. My son has also gotten the news. I still keep them in top shape. I am still wearing an 8 year old pair of boots I bought.
Love your videos. Keep up the good work.
If you use the grease, just use a stiff bristled artists paint brush to apply, then rub it all around with your hands or use a hair drier to warm it slightly to melt it in. Works like a charm.
Tip: An old toothbrush works great forgetting into the nooks and crannies.
Great video as always, thank you.
I don't wear any super expensive boots. Just a pair of chippewas but your videos have been a big help.
I've got 2 brushes for my boots. 1 for cleaning out the the junk, and the second to work the heavy LP in the cracks and crevices, then I lightly hit the boots with a heat gun, and it just takes in that Heavy LP, and repeat. it seems to dry into a better polymer when exposed to a little heat and applied in layers.
I ALWAYS LOVE ALL YOUR VIDEOS Cody!!!
Cody is there anything you can't do? Wish I was half the man you are. Great videos. I depend on them! Never stop lol
Could you do an update on the comparison of obenaufs and Adams boot juice.
A well taken care of set of boots, Cody. I is used when talking about yourself. :p
I love your boots, and your boot videos.
2022 !!! Had to watch the old stuff
Love the videos! All of them!
Thx
Thanks for the video, Let us know how it works out Left VS Right boot.
Cody when I was younger & had a dirt bike. I used some treatment for my boots. It was waxing like your one kind. To get it to soak in better a guy told me to use a hair drier. That liquefies the waxy stuff & makes it sink in.
Just my 2 cents...LOL
I got some of the LP. I’ll have to check out the oil now.
On to part 2....
So I use Obhenauf's for my boots. works great. Love the smell and the finish. Im curious about your thoughts on Huberds shoe grease. Is there any comparable difference with the two products. Well if you've used them both. Thanks, Love your videos.
like ur Grandad said Boots and beds , are worth the investment, I agree and if I may add my two cents , sunglasses and hats , rank next in line . Thanks again
next time when you do this again since you did half and half of obenofs and adams boot juice switch it and do it opposite of what had it this time so that way the will wear just about the same
Congrats on 120k subs
Nothing like a good pair of boots!
my grandmother taught me to shine shoes, you can get a spretty serious shine using hose in the last steps
Will these techniques work on cheaper boots like ones from say Academy?
Wonderful pair of boots.
I have a pair of whites and I've had him for 15 years because I take care of what goes on my feet because they make me money even we been resold 3 times with new Caulkes this time
Bought two pair of Adam's boots. Sold two to friends. Love the whole process with him.
Have you received delivery of your boots yet?
wranglerstar Friend got his yesterday, he's delighted. We'll run them through in the mountains. 10-day horse trip starts July 27. Will know better what I think when I get out of the bush.
Got mine today. They're wonderful. Adam did a great job. I've been tromping around in them all day. Head for mountains in just over a week. Will give them a good workout there.
Told Adam about your videos. He didn't even know. That seems just about perfect to me.
I love Obenauf's. I may try that oil sometime. I am also curious to see if the Adam's boot cream works well. A big reason I like Obenauf's so much is the way the beeswax waterproofs the leather. I wonder if his will do any waterproofing for your boots.

awesome Video adam. thumbs up
What a sweet pair of boots wearing very well
Cody, what are your thoughts on armorall-ing the soles? I recently did that to mine, and it turned them black again, but the tiny bit that go on the bottom got squeaky. I know that rubber likes armorall though, so I dunno.
Wranglerstar, you do know that you can have your whites resized right? When I bought mine (lace to toe Smoke jumpers 10" model) they told me they and be resized to my feet, to a limited degree of course but, its something to think about. I must say, I am glad I found your proper boot videos, ended up with a pair of whites and my feet and knees are rejoicing at the reduced strain. Granted, the 1000mi round trip was iffy, so was the expression on my fathers face when I paid for them...
I use the oil and wax, just keep a hair dryer or heat gun close bye and when the leathers warm it sucks it right in.
Great video Cody, but where is the second part?
Yes uploading now Dan,
Thanks Wrangler star. Btw my dad also taught me to polish my shoes before church I think shoes are a good example of the stewardship that The Lord expects of us.
Thanks for sharing
I've had the same pair of $50 Wal-Mart boots (Brahma brand) for 4 years. They've been through hell, 3/4 of the tread is gone, but they're still waterproof and still going. I scrub them down and rub mink oil on them about every other month. After I clean them I sit them in the sun for a bit to get them warm, so the mink oil absorbs better.
They have some oil that comes in a tub with a brush that is attached to the lid. Think plumbers glue. It is super handy. I buy the big jug, then refill small tub.
I have a pair of danner rainforest boots and the sole is stitched to the boot. I don't think they are crummy at all.
I'am curious to see if that white stuff that you applied to the boots work I'am a little sceptical it doesn't seem to be absorbing into the leather. I have been using the Viberg wax which is the same stuff as the Obenaufs different brand same manufacturer been using it for years.
great videos wranglerstar!
Something makes me think Adams secret boot juice is simply cocoa butter. It would definitely make sense. I could be wrong though
Awesome video as usual!
I just subscribed so yea I'm new. I won several pairs of leather shoes and boots, i also try and take care of them ( think i take better care of them then i do my truck) i am a volunteer fire fighter in north west Mo. so my experience with grass fires are very different, for the most part I just wear my leather structure fire boot. and they weigh a ton.
Excuse me Wranglerstar, I am from England and I do a lot of Birdwatching and hunting. Which boots do you recommend as the best you have ever had please? I really enjoy your videos, thank you. It would be nice for a reply please. Regards, David...
Great video
i would love to be a fly on the wall when she found out you used the shirt to dry off the boot! haha! great video!
Just to clarify the screws melt everything
I always put my boots in the oven at low temp to heat it them up so they melt the wax
Whites boots sold out to lacrose. , In 2012 lacrose sold out to a Tokyo based shoe retailer ... They say there gonna try to keep the same quality and no jobs lost but we've all heard that story before.
They look pretty good from the pictures
That lotion looks like a queen Helene bottle and the smell you describe is like it also lol
In my family we learned to shine our shoes for church too. It also prepared me for that facet of Navy life.
This may be a little ahead of things, but what do you do with wet boots? I mean, sometimes soakin' boots! What do you think of the Peet boot dryer?
Wranglerstar I hope you know that is lotion you're putting on that leather the name of that lotions call cocoa butter you can buy it in some stores lol
Cody: where did you get that small metal pan?
You didn't put the link in the description for part two!
Very cool video.
Id love to see a video about welding (basic equipment, different types of welders, qualities of different brands, and a tutorial). Another interesting video would be about toolboxes for your truck bed.
I hear you. My military background has installed in me the importance of caring for your footwear. You clean and tend you boots before you tend yourself. An army marches on its feet.
Enjoyed the video
wranglerstar - *Hey Cody, thanks for the great review video before this and for doing explaining how and why to care for your boots, well done!*
Quick question - Why do you use leather laces? Are they better or just preference? Thanks in advance brother.
Cody explains the difference in boot laces in his other boot care videos, they are worth a watch, all good info.
cd5honda - Are you talking about some of the videos for months ago? I must have you to miss them, or missed some of the content within them. :-( Can you point me to the video you're talking about? Thanks in advance! :-)
***** part two of this video
Oh oh . . . you're in trouble now~! Using that new shirt to clean your boots.
Cody I have a pair of hathrone boots and danners that were my fathers and grandfathers and my boots have last about 17 years on one and 15 on the other but I like nice boots like you but really like the vid.
Those are nice boots they look to be wearing just right
Great video. Any chance we'll see more tool restorations?
"Adams Boot Juice" Boom top quality product naming, lol
+wranglerstar great video, very helpful but you were saving that a good pair of wild-land boots has glued, stitched and screwed soles, so how comes the stacked leather heel isn't stitched or screwed
Dan uk
Hi awesome video! I just got hired on with a wildland fire crew in British Columbia, I recently bought Viberg fire boots. Camp begins in about 10 days and my boots are a stiff as there new. A friend of mine recommended soaking my boots over night and wearing them the next day to help mould to my feet. I’ve seen mixed review online and was just curious of your opinion. I spent over 600 $ and wouldn’t want to jeopardize the leather.
What about using organic coconut oil to condition boots? Haven't tried it but it is good for skin so should be good for boots?
Is there a reason you prefer the long tongue? I just got my red card and I’m looking at a few pairs but I’m wondering why you picked the longer tongue over the shorter or if it’s just personal preference
wranglerstar , After wearing Adam's boots now for some time now, how do you like them or think they compare to White's boots. My bother is wanting to invest in some boots and has asked for my advice. I have two different pairs of White's boot that I like very much, but after I saw your videos about Adam's boots I'v been thinking they might be the better boot. Please do let us know how Adam's boots are working out for you. Cheers :)
When I was a boy, my dad taught me to shine shoes and then gave me everyone Sunday shoes to practice on. I thought I would do one better than my dad and so I polished the soles too. I had to spend Monday night at the church cleaning black shoe polish off the floor of the church.
Ive had a pair of Carolinas for a couple of years(best boots I've ever owned btw) and I have always used mink oil once a month or 2. My question is. At what point do I strip the old stuff off and start applying new and how does one go about doing this? Thanks in advance.
I like to warm the entire boot before treating them. Not hot, but maybe 100-105 degrees,,, it seems to open the pores of the leather and it really soaks it in.
+Jackle61 I've noticed a difference between polishing indoors and outside on the front step in the direct sun light. Feels like a more adhesive coat of polish.
rideithard661 I would imagine the sun would heat them up a bit,, especially if they are black or dark brown. I'll have to try that.
I'm using black kiwi polish on black combat boots. I'm cleaning them daily for work though so the polish is pretty built up.
in fact I need to do that this weekend
Cody do you know when the documentary whit you and your family is going to be coming out?
I don't know Brian. It was supposed to come out last Christmas. I think the producer has had a hard time trying to fund the film.
Thanks everyone for the info
"Adam's Boot Juice"...I like the name...:)
Rooster
Nice video city boy.
I'm 13 and I maintain my leather boots every 2-3 months if I'm working in Sandy areas il do it every month
Great video Wranglerstar. Quick question: are those 8 or 10 inch boots?
I feed my boots with the highest quality food and give it som good ol XO and then me and my boots crack a cold one with the boys
I take boots and tires very seriously. Invest the money in quality stuff and you will thank yourself. Tires and boots are what connect you to the earth don't skimp.
+MrSigDan This sounds wise.
Don't forget your bed
Are you sure the stuff you are saying smells like Pina Colada isn't St. Helen's Cocoa Butter? It is real creamy also. The bottle is identical in size, has the same brown cap but is just missing the St. Helen's Cocoa Butter label. I can send you a pic of it. It costs about $2.50 at Dollar General. I got a feeling someone is passing off Cocoa Butter as boot protector.
It probably would protect it. We use it in the winter to keep our skin moist up in NE, Ohio and for borderline sunburn. I bet it would work great for any leather item.
When I come home from work the first thing I do is take care of my tools and then I take care of myself
