My builder pros STOCK were perfect to the eye and I could not tell the difference. I like the black sole stitching too!

I had no idea people actually complained about stitching symmetry. I feel like anyone that has a problem with things this trivial have never worn or worn out a pair of work boots.

Right, but when you’re spending good money on a premium boot you don’t want to see any egregious inconsistencies. The boot should represent the price on all fronts.

Good vid. The little differences are how you know you have a hand made boot. Those differences should be treasured. It is the beauty of wabi-sabi. These boots should be evaluated only for the durability and armor they provide to your feet. I'm so glad Nick's has a several month back log right now. Prevents me from ordering too many. I've got two pairs and a third on order.
My best advice to anyone buying Nicks boots is, get out of your own way, keep your preconceived notions and ego at bay and let Nicks fit you with the proper boot, they know what they're doing. Nicks sizing is miles from I would normally buy off the shelf but I couldnt be happier with the finished product. 👍 Thank you Nicks for the work you do.
Imaging being a Nick's customer service and have to deal with those 'fashion logger'.
Let’s not pretend an enormous portion of Nicks customer base isn’t this “fashion logger”, especially considering their extended product line which goes far beyond Fire Boots.
@@JonathanGrandt I am fashion logger myself, I use my nick's for just hiking. But this is the kind of customer feedbacks make Dr martens what they are right now.
Brilliant topic to discuss. Craftsmen already understand these points, but it's great to have a reliable, trusted source such as Nicks address them. I want my work to look good and function well, but if one has to be sacrificed, function takes priority. If someone judges me the symmetry of my stitching I'm going to sleep well tonight anyway.
I have had my boots for 2 months now (Urban Loggers) and they are perfectly conformed to me now and absolutely PERFECT. Patience goes a long way with Nick’s Boots. Just ordered another pair the other day. These boots are life changing. Thanks Nick’s.
As a Nicks boots wearer and a leather craftsman, I can appreciate every ounce of work that goes into each boot, as well as the unique fingerprint that the craftsman and the materials leave on each one. And they’re super comfy. There’s nothing I’d rather wear. Keep up the great work, gang!
I’m honestly looking forward to finding all the little unique aspects and differences and seeing how many I can spot because that just fascinates me. Mine haven’t even hit production stage yet and I’m pumped! Going to be the most worthwhile $1300 ever spent, and you best realise I’m gonna baby them for as long as I can until I can get proper care products

I owned at least 7 Nicks pairs and I can tell you in my first pair that was my introduction to superior quality, I fell in the cosmetic judgement since took me several time to reach that first pair. At that time were not YT videos explaining process and that breaking the boot will make it looks even. There was not FB group that supported your question and guide you. Now I can say that it's enough material online to check your doubts and consult. Now I guide people and feel proud that they will experience a superior quality in their feet.

At first I thought "oh sh!t did I contribute to this by asking about differing heel counter cover sizes on insta?" The more I learn about these processes, the more I realize that perfect symmetry is impossible, and I'm okay with that. Love you Grant!

This reminds me of discussions I had as a skilled craft interpreter in the gunsmith shop of a well known east coast 18th century living history museum. Visitors came in with the notion that handmade guns couldn't be reliable and durable and made to close tolerances. When I say handmade I'm talking about every bit of the gun being made with hand tools... brass cast in sand molds, barrels forge welded, reamed and rifled by hand, wood screws filed by hand... literally every part of the gun hand filed. The raw materials varied from gun to gun too. The reality was that the tolerances, finishes and durability were as good as, and in most cases better, than the typical machine made modern gun. It was true that there were no interchangeable parts, and there were cosmetic differences across guns, but that in no way meant it was an inferior and unreliable product.
My Builder Pros don't look like they were made of homogeneous materials and came out of a CNC machine. I embrace the quality, durability and re-buildability of them and am pleased that they don't look exactly like every other pair of Builder Pros ever made but they look good. They were also made to fit my feet and the chronic problems of tight spots and sore feet are behind me.

knowing that they are handmade and not perfectly stiched is something i think nicks customers will want. Knowing they are handmade and not machine made should give a great sense of appreciation, even tho i dont own any Nicks.
A perfick analogy to this is Cut crystal each item looks like the same because there is a pattern is used, but when looking closely every peace is different or a one of this tells you it's hand made just as your boots . Happy trails.
Another good video. If I look close enough can find a couple very minor things but it would never occur to me to complain about my nicks boots. They are finally broken in and better than any boots I’ve ever had on my feet. My only regret is not getting them sooner!
Golly, outstanding video explanation of what to look for in a new pair of boots. I started making the coffee on this chilly January 26 morning while watching Grant illustrate what is essentially a visual inspection of a boot, speaking about more than ten things to look for. Thank you for posting such a good presentation.
I'm often asked about my morning coffee. The coffee is now ready, about five ounces, strong, black, full of flavor, made in the espresso style, and I so look forward to each new day with the opportunity to enjoy another good cup-o-joe, knowing I have an amazing pair of boots to use, today !! I routinely fix double the amount of coffee because it is so enjoyable, ending up with ten to eleven ounces, each morning.
Applying my double espresso coffee paradigm makes me want to double up on my boots and wear two pair at a time; however, I haven't figured out how to wear more than one pair at a time. Life is good, and perhaps I should budget a second pair of boots to give my first pair a rest, from time to time. Continued blessings to Grant along with Nick's Boots, making the world a better place, one pair at a time !!

Strangely enough, I actually pay to have my footwear be of different sizes. I have different sized feet courtesy of an accident. I see differences as a plus as they are often the mark of time spent to make individual shoes fit properly instead of going for uniformity of the pair.
i have a pair of predator orange boots. when i first put them on one boot looked to be lasted half inch off center. it did bother me. but i was told exactly as this video. after awhile they evened out . have been amazing pair.

I got my Builder Pro’s on Monday and been steadily been breaking them in. I have 0 complaints about the build quality.
Be ready with the ice for your feet lol, I’m 3 months in and the foot bed still isn’t done forming to my foot yet, the more i wear them the more I’m convinced that they break your feet in more than you break them in, excellent boots though, couldn’t be happier with my purchase
@@kevingipe8242 the only issues I’ve had so far is the spot where the foot and ankle meet in the front. I’m surprised at how much the 2,1,3 lacing method helps!
@@rileyh212 I had that exact same issue on my right foot, it feels like it’s pushing into the soft bit where your top of your foot and shin come together? Yeah the 213 helps with that, glad to know I’m not the only one
I never had any of these issues with my Nick's boots. Craftsmanship is art.....A craftsman should take time to make a product as best as they can. Work hard and diligently yes but never push the time clock just for numbers or treating your craft as just a job, it is art and takes years to master. I love my Nick's boots for the quality and the comfort they give me over hours on my feet.

What is the model name?
I bought a pair of Rangers and the shape of left boot doesn't match the right. It drives me nuts when I look down at them. The right toe box is tapered nicely and looks great, the left is more blunt and round and is quite different. I just live with it but I'm pretty bummed about it. Great boots though.
If they were going to treat the boots as dress shoes, then they'd be priced at like $2000+
They are rugged boots, comfort and durability is the only thing I only care for.
How many dump people have to complain about this cosmetic “problems” that you have to make a video explaining that is NORMAL!! Love this guys!.
Quality control will take a hit anytime a company kicks up production to meet a growing demand. Hence these videos need to be made to excuse what should be avoidable with better QC.
I mean stitching symmetry is fine but wildly different ankle lengths seems like it should be avoidable, somehow?
Maybe moving some of the upper finishing steps to the end of the process or something?
@@JonathanGrandt These work boots are mostly made to meet their functional standard, so Nicks got different QC standard than those ordinary fashion brands. To accomplish a higher cosmetic standard worker will need to slow down their work, their production line need to adjust the process to meet the cosmetic demand, at the same time may generate more defect pair, ultimately cost per pair will increase. If you willing to pay mare to get your perfect boots, there are brand out there will meet your demand, simple.

I would figure people buying Nick's would be more educated in the art of handmade. Also figured they would already be educated in difference and inconsistencies. Regardless of this video, I would still LOVE to own a pair of Nick's, Frank's, White's and Wesco's.

As Nick’s Boots are handmade boots everything you mention is part of the process of hand making boots. A feature of machine made boots are they are for the most part uniform as the machines are “ copying “ the same process each time.
Cheap boots aren't good.

I thought that one of the reasons would be the asymmetry between my left foot and my right foot, because you build the boots based on the last made from the tracings of my feet, don't you?

We definitely wish we could make boots as beautiful as some Japanese craftspeople with the technique and attention to detail that they have, but many people are often questioning spending 500 on boots, not even talking about spending $3000

I love your boots, and would be thrilled to own a pair, but it baffles me why you stitch over the top of sole lugs instead of cutting a channel in them. You'll wear through the stitches on the first day. I'm sure the glue will hold just fine, but why bother stitching if the stitches are going to be broken immediately?

Why do you only have people measuring there foot in 1 spot?
I did their fit sheet and I think they asked for 8-10 different measurements.
They can be symmetrical, but with the speed the bootmakers work it’s impossible to get this 100%. The demand is so high that the bootmakers have to work very fast and that is not good for the quality of perfect stitches, symmetric soles etc. My Red Wing Iron Rangers are a symmetrical disaster. They are made very fast and not with great precision. The opening where the laces grab the boots is at one boot a half inch wider as if my foot is wider, but that’s not the case. That’s why there are so many factory seconds at Red Wing. New employees that don’t master the skills of bootmaking. It’s a pity that there is no shop with Nicks boots in the Netherlands. I don’t want to order in The USA without fitting the boots first. I use custom insoles.

I like that there are slight differences in right and left boots. It’s gives the brand character. Anyways no mans right and left foot/leg are exactly the same In the first place.

People can't even understand craftsmanship when they see it anymore because all they see is mass produced junk. Every single piece of junk exactly like the next piece of junk, and that is what passes for quality. These boots are masterfully built! I'm also amazed that these boots are so cheap. Everyone talks about the high price of these boots. Really? If you spent that much time to gain all that skill and knowledge, and then put that much work into each pair, how much would you charge? My only issue with Nick's is trying to decide what my 4th pair will be.
Have you ever owned anything that was handmade? Nice dishes, clothing, art, A birthday cake? Nick’s HAND made boots. Not made on a 3-D printer. Made by hard-working men and women that probably need to take ibuprofen or a swig of some thing at the end of the day to relax because stuff hurts. I have Boots on order right now and I’m extremely confident that I’m not going to bitch like A spoiled entitled teenage girl. Making boots is really hard and it takes a lot of skill and craftsmanship that I sure as hell don’t have.
Bottom Line : all the boots are unique.
I think people are too obsessed with symmetry or inconsequential details these days.
Because when you pay $600 for a pair of boots , $300 dollars lost its value and that's why you get two boots that don't match
If I can afford handmade boots, I want them to NOT look machine made!

Your boot should definitely not be “leaning”. Say what you will, but these types of videos make me feel that QC is slipping in order to meet demand. The amount of money someone spends on a pair from Nick’s… that pair should be pretty darn excellent. All these excuses involve “they are using pliers.” Well no kidding!
My one complaint. There is no such word as “heigth” . It is always height. Boots are great, I’m not buying a grammar lesson.
If you buy these boots and worry about stitching as if you're going to wear it to a wedding... Brotha go get your Testosterone levels checked. Cause your hormones are out of wack.
Also, I get that it's expensive, but it's literally hand made. The little quirks should add to the prestige not take away from it.
