The only thing faster than an EVs acceleration is it's depreciation....
My Tesla is 5 years old and still worth right about 50% of what I paid for it. I've looked at what Tesla sells similar used ones for so that is where I'm getting that info. I would argue that amount of depreciation is typical for a $50k to $60k vehicle. Hell a BMW, Volkswagen, Mercedes, Jag are worse I would bet. I have probably saved a few thousand dollars in fuel over that time too so its pretty much in my favor I would argue but I'm not selling it for at least another 5 years and probably wont then either, its paid for and cost me pennies to drive each month now like between $60 to $80 a month. I would be stupid to sell it at this point and it drives as good as the day I bought it, never have any issues with it and it gets updated features it didn't come with when I bought it with over the air updates a good 3 times a year. To me its a no brainer, my Gas and diesel trucks sit and rarely get used. I have to go charge the batteries they sit so much.
And when newer much better batteries are available in the near future, older primitive EVs will plunge in value.

@@jstar1000 A super cheap Tesla is still at least $35k USD. And many people have short commutes where gasoline vs EV doesn't make much difference.

The market on its own will eventually demand EV. Tony Seba knows how it will happen: make EV batteries so cheap that it undercuts gas cars. Oil companies will switch their pumps to electric. In the EU, it’s already beginning.

@@The1Mischief that’s wild. I know a guy who parks in tons of wild spots far from where he’s going just to charge his EV. Then he bikes to the spot he’s actually going too. It’s honestly a wild way to live but apparently he saves a lot on gas I guess.
If you can't charge at home with 240 volts, don't get an EV.
100 million people live in apartments, in America. They have zero interest in an EV that lacks a dashboard (Tesla).
The scary thing is how many manufacturers jumped on the EV bandwagon without taking a look at the infrastructure and economic climate, and now have thousands of these things sitting on lots (Here's to you, Mustang Mach-e)

My gal worked at rivian for all of 6 weeks, then was RIF’d (reduction in force). She worked finance and would tell me about the crazy money they’d throw all around without thought. Yeah, I bet they’ll go under.

Easy to spend someone else's money. Sadly for us poor peeps we suffer the taxes to pay off the debt and the inflationary effects due to that debt. It was one hell of a scam. Now the chickens are home to roost.😮

Rivian Loses something like $35,000 on every car they sell. The only reason they are still in business is they manage to get a lot of cash in the beginning. It's going straight down the toilet.
They will go the way of Fisker within 2 years...burn rate too high and sales too low.

You need to understand basic economics. As for the supposed $35,000 loss per vehicle, they will make it up on volume. Yes that is sarcasm. Hopefully the EV period will crash and burn in a few years. At least end all US regulations that have the effect of forcing them on consumers.

When we mean electrified, we mean vehicles with varying forms of electrification, from hybrids to EVs, as well as hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV).
When I pull into a gas station, the pump sits under a roofed structure, protecting me from the rain and shading me from the sun. If I'm thirsty or hungry I can go inside the store and buy a drink and a snack. I can also use the bathroom before going on my way after a 5 minute fill-up.
If I were in an EV, I'd find a charging "station" in the far reaches of some parking lot, out in the open, exposed to the driving rain or blazing sun, no store or bathroom anywhere in sight and instead of a 5 min pit stop, I'm stuck there for god knows how long struggling with apps and connectors and on-board computers trying to link up and talk to each other....

Not with a Tesla, your totally wrong. They are always in shopping centers or at gas stations and have food and bathrooms close by within easy walking across a parking lot typically at the most, no cover but I charge at home over 90% of the time so its not even close to being an issue for me. The fact that I charge at home and I'm ready to go every morning is a total game changer and overwhelmingly outweighs the rare occasion I charge away from home which in my case has never been any sort of issue.

@@DerekDavis213 Super chargers have been all over the US, Canada and Europe since before 2017, you think if it was an issue you wouldn't have heard about it by now? Apparently you have never owned an EV or a Tesla for that matter, the car is pretty smart and it does a system check before it starts charging, if it senses moisture of any kind then it wouldn't start the charging process. Many EVs have charged at super charges in the pouring rain many times, its a non issue.
Only on road trips would you be outside charging. I'm able to do 99% of the charging for my Tesla in my climate controlled garage. Can you pump gas into your car while parked inside your closed garage?

Gasoline cars: parts are everywhere, mechanics are everywhere, or you can fix the car yourself. Tech manuals are easily available.

EVs are bullshit. I rented an EV on a trip to SoCal. First, it was NOT any cheaper than gas, at least not demonstrably so. Second, the charging stations suck. Can take a long time to get the thing charging, credit card won’t read, app won’t load, etc. Third, obviously, is the length of time it takes to charge. Living in northeast, I’ll never get an EV unless it’s a second or third car. The cold kills the range. Also, up here AND in Cali they tell you to watch your A/C usage because it’s too much of a load on the grid. How can you tell people their air conditioning is a burden on the grid and then tell everyone they should charge their cars on that same grid. Gtfoh
If you charge at home you will get a comparable 120 miles to the gallon!
The main grid burden is before midnight. You can set a home charger (and often the car) to not start charging until after midnight.

Every brand out there jumped on the EV wagon, the Big 3 are union shops which Tesla isn’t, not good for government support. Also, NADA is very powerful and has relationships with big 3 and not Tesla. Tesla will have the EV market, but EVs will not become the dominant form of transportation.
I drive a Prius Prime and I charge at home your 100% right when you are traveling EV charging is MORE expensive than gas.

Been saying this for a few years. My dad was an early adopter with a 2012 Tesla. The only way for ev to catch on is to decrease inconvenience or drastically reduce cost.
I heard through a friend in the Texas legislature that there is a bill pending that would quadruple the registration fee for all licensed EV's. This would make up for the shortfall in road maintenance revenue because EV's don't pay state tax on gasoline.

Keep driving my old gas vehicle. Vehicle is at the end of the depreciation curve.
On the west coast we are receiving hefty rate increases from utility companies because of existing stress on the grids here with more increases on the horizon. I predict this will become a much bigger news story in the next couple of years, as everyday ratepayers begin to ask questions about their skyrocketing electric bills.

@@MA-id1hr I have a 5 year old Tesla, best car I have ever owned hands down and I've owned a ton in my 62 years. For most folks, at least most that have a home, its the best vehicle to own and will be the cheapest overall to drive if you keep it 10+ years like you should keep any vehicle to get your money's worth. Mine is paid for and it cost me about $60 to $80 a month to charge and drive it and requires pretty much zero maintenance other then tires ever 40 to 50k miles. I'm on my second set at 40k miles on this set and still going. Not getting your time share analogy, that is a time slot to use something you don't own and you have to pay yearly fees to use it and then you can't get rid of it and your kids have to take over and pay the fees if you die, yeah horrible idea. EVs are nothing like that in any way.
Don’t forget about the astronomical insurance premiums as well. Only those with the best driving record even afford an EV.
Not true. My '24 Tesla Model Y costs less to insure than my '23 Jeep Wrangler 4xe or my wife's '23 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

the EV mandate is another example of failed big gov't. trying to mandate rather than letting consumer make choice based on characteristics of vehicles is recipe for failure, not to mention the total joke of infrastructure to charge. California power grid already a joke...and it would need to produce 4x current output if all vehicles in state were electric.
If there are no EVs around when i need to get a new car (5-10 years from now) I’ll just get a hybrid from Toyota.

Toyota wasn’t right…they are just smart. They saw producing EV’s as cutting off their fingers. I’ve driven 20K miles on my EV with no maintenance. I called the dealer at 10K miles and the service advisor said,”We’re finding that these EV’s need little to no maintenance. Just bring it in every 10K miles, and we’ll rotate the tires for free.” Also, I’ve never paid a dime for charging as I can use the public charges at my apartment complex. So 20K miles in with no maintenance costs and no fuel costs. You realize car dealers aren’t selling Jack squat right now…EV’s or ICE’s….so guess where they make their $$$….their service departments. Toyota was smart because they decided to trick all the sucker consumers into buying hybrids! Guess what…hybrids are even more complex and have hundreds more parts than an EV. They need regular maintenance…AND when the warranty’s expire on all these hybrids Toyota is putting on our roads…to all the unsuspecting suckers…the repair costs on those vehicles is going to be astronomical. It’s the herd being led to the slaughter…hate to break that to ya. I guess you could say Toyota was right, if you wanna look at it that way…they were right that they could keep raking in the $$$ from their service departments when their car sales dried up. If they had pushed EV’s it would’ve been a double whammy…no service revenues to make up for lost sales. Glad I didn’t follow the herd.

Manufactures should have stood up, and warned the public, exactly what Obama environmental regulations, would do to the industry. To have mass adoption of EVs, you need regular people to buy them (not rich.) Not everyone has a house, much less a house with a garage. Harder to charge if you rent. What if you live in a rural area.
I like the Rivian, and there are 3 pickups in my Northeast College Town. At $77,000, I wonder how people can afford them. And how they get them serviced.

@@chucksmith2732 yes I know they are also in that range however the justification is a tax write off. When I sold GM in December I routinely got business owners who were told to buy new trucks to get write offs.
There are a bunch of truck enthusiasts who are either buying 3 year old Tundra or keeping their 10 year old Silverado F150 etc.
I say "rich" because generally car costs should be 10% of income including repairs and insurance. Maybe I am frugal. Rivian owners must be Millionaires

America needs to rethink its strategy concerning EVs?
Why should there even be a strategy? Let people buy what they want and the market will make what sells. That is not a strategy, that is just normal existence. The fact that people talk in terms of "strategy" for EVs is incredibly sinister and telling. If you need a strategy, something went very wrong somewhere.
EVs make sense for the small segment of people who ...
1. Believe the lie that EVs will save the planet.
2. Can afford the high price tag and the steep depreciation.
3. Own their own home with their own charger.
4. Have additional gas vehicles for applications that EVs are not practical for, such as long trips, towing and hauling.
For everyone else, EVs are not suitable until prices drop, depreciation slows, range improves, and charging infrastucture expands widely.

A Tesla Model 3 or Y can be bought new for $40k and cad drive 1000 miles a month on $35 worth of electricity in my state. Makes for a very economical commute car. After 10 years of daily use it’s pretty much worthless but that’s the case with a lot of cars.
@@mylesgray3470, no my 2005 Envoy, with 225k miles is still going strong, then my 2004 Buick Le sabre with like 165 k miles still going strong..then my 1971 Datsun, still going strong..it really depends on how you take care of it. I don't think an EV would last that long w out the battery change and how much would that cost?

No one truly cares about the environment when purchasing an EV. They just like the upfront fuel savings and driving characteristics.

@@anonymousfu financing always comes through for back orders? You think Tesla alone is financing all the pre-sales? Tesla isn't laying off 10% for kicks and giggles, their order volume has dropped. And, as you mention, with 'like a million backorders' either some of those people aren't able to go through with their original intent or everyone else drastically stopped ordering other Tesla vehicles.
Something tells me lots of those pre-orders were initiated when most of those people had better financial prospects.
Signs of things to come. EV manufacturers put all their eggs in one basket, parts and service are a huge revenue stream.

The entire car industry needs a reset. Most of the brands are selling cars at ridiculous prices, 30-40% more than its actually worth. All new EV's coming out especially SUV's are all priced 70K plus. Even brands like Kia, Hyundai, Toyota dont feel like the value for money brands anymore. With high interest rates and inflation at its peak, people have been pushed to the edge. Last thing anyone is looking for is to be environment friendly. I want these companies to fail, some of the big arrogant players to go bankrupt the same way GM, Ford once did and the entire car industry to be grounded.
The only way I would buy an EV is to scrap them for their chips.

Very curious how many buyers of used EV experience battery issues. The lack of dealership knowledge on how to repair battery packs is also going to be a huge issue.
Instead of giving subsidies to middle class buyers, the government should have subsidized a program where the battery is leased and never owned by the customer like many municipal charging programs in China.
Battery leasing makes it more difficult to sell the vehicle, especially when the car, itself is used.
Auto companies are going to be asking for bailouts because the Gov pushed them into EVs. With a recession looming Auto companies are going to take a beating this year. FYI, I'd never pay 50k for a P/U truck...New autos are way too expensive...
After 17years of driving a smart I bought a full hybrid Toyota Corolla. It's a great car with great mpg. After long research, my trust in Toyota/Lexus is BY FAR the highest.

charging my ev is free. even if it wasn't free it would cost me roughly $100 per month. I was spending $200 a month for fuel in a car that gets 31 mpg just to go to work.
Bought a Tesla last year. Saved $1200 in fuel so far and love it.
They're great cars.

The whole issue with EVs is the difficulty in recharging them. This will take decades to solve. If ever!!
EVs don’t make any since period. It’s not a matter of waiting for better”grid infrastructure “ or better battery tech “ just around the corner” or building out “ green energy” grid( wind mills solar) None of it is fit for purpose. It is a pipe dream.
Try telling that to the EV worshippers. Logic completely goes out the window with them.
Model Y dual motor seats 5 with cargo and goes 0-60 in 4.4 seconds and it’s under $50k and costs about $40 a month I electricity to run. You need to spend way more to match that power with gas and even then you’re looking at sports cars. This is why it’s the best selling car in the world.
@@mylesgray3470 I take it you conveniently left out the $7500 tax credit out of the price? And a $50k ICEV can be filled to 100% in a few minutes. There are lots of places to fill it up. I can tow stuff if it's an SUV or truck a lot further on a fill up. It didn't use child or slave labor to build. It doesn't lose range over time. It's cheaper to repair and much faster to repair. And it won't depreciate nearly as fast.
If Tesla is build to order why do they have a huge inventory right now?
They have grown so large they can no longer be built to order and still be efficiently produced.
Interest rates will never go down anytime soon.
Please point me to these 50% depreciated 1-year old EVs, because I'd like to buy one. Not seeing those kind of prices in any nationwide search.

I suspect most of the companies throwing in on EV's are now suffering big loses. Even though Ford lost $4 billion last year they can fall back on increase ICE production to assist making up some of those loses. Companies like GM, VW etc can survive but cutting right back on EV production and increases ICE and Hybrid sales. But the likes of Tesla its hard they are in the same bracket as all these Chinese EV companies, loses are only made up by reducing their assets, like people (employees) and manufacturing bases. I can see Tesla moving most of its operation to China in the future, forget about Mexico this will not be the investment to help them. I also think EV's sales will not do much in the next 2 to 5 years, they will stay in the wilderness. Governments tax incentives will soon dissolve, in the same way as Germany.
Again I live in New England and in the summer my electric car was great at 320 miles, but in the winter it went down to 180 miles at a full charge and I couldn’t use the heat or defrost and it took longer to charge. This is unacceptable in New England, where you might get stuck in the snowstorm or traffic, so this is why I got rid of my electric and went back to gas
The percentage of EVs sold last year was 7.6% per Kelley Blue Book not 2 to 3 %.
That was 2023. Sales have fallen off a cliff in first quarter 2024 and they aren't coming back any time soon. People are waking up to how bad EVs are to live with.

Most ev owners remark about how much easier it is to make lane changes with the instant torque to zip right on infront of you before your ego can hit that gas pedal.

Good job as always sir! I bought my first model 3 a couple of years ago, a flood salvage Hertz car and it was a hoot getting back on the road. My GF drives it now and she loves it. My second was a brand new model 3 that was in a mud slide in CA, took forever to get the mud out of that car but there wasn’t anything really wrong with it and that’s my daily driver now. Just bought a third one with some minor front end damage, been repairing it in the garage with eBay parts. I would never buy a new EV but dang these fixer uppers are a blast and really awesome for driving around town. I plan to keep my Tundra, Kia Forte GT, and BMW 530e though.

You think they are pumping the brakes now, wait until everyone hears about the EV tax coming. NJ has proposed a new EV tax because states are losing "gas tax" money. Additionally, states are considering 4-year mandatory registrations for EV vehicles. Those essentially wipe out that 4k tax breaks you get today. Hybrid, sure, EV, no thanks.

And unlike oil and gas, grid energy gets greener every year. Coal has dropped substantially in usage as natural gas has gotten cheaper, and now natural gas is being pressured by unsubsidized renewables. So even the grid is getting cleaner.

I agree…so many people that keep bashing EV’s saying they aren’t selling…when, in reality, nothing is selling EV’s or ICE’s. I’ve driven my EV 20K miles with no fuel or maintenance costs. I charge for free at my apartments and have only rotated the tires once for free. I’m kinda glad there’s so much hate and negativity being driven around EV’s as it will help the charging infrastructure play catchup. I love my EV and would never buy another gas combustion engine. I see all the people driving ICE’s and hybrids as the suckers.

Lucky where are seeing Tesla Model Y 2yrs old for less than 30k for 2021 models? Here in Dallas you can find a high mileage 2019 maybe 2020 in the sub 30k range. I should have started up front, I want a Tesla Model Y. I also have never owned an EV. However, brand new with the tax credit applied at same you can get a brand new AWD, Long Range for just under 37k. ? So why wouldn't you buy new? Was able to finally negotiate down a model Y from 28 down to 25k to qualify for the EV credit. The dealer then told me that in order to make the deal happen, in a seperate transaction i need to purchase a paint and wheel protection plan which cost $3285. I stopped replying to their emails. These dealers really dont want to make sales at least thats what it seems like to me. I even offered 1000 extra cash to make it happen and they wont budge

Not an EV liker, will never own one. That said instead of pushing something on people who don't want one, just let the market drive EV sales. There are people how want these, sell to them and leave the rest of us alone. The more the government tries to force EV's on people the stronger the resistance will be against them by the general public, nobody like to be pushed into buying something they don't want.

For daily driving which most people do a Tesla is the best vehicle hands down to own and drive unless you live in an apartment or have no way to charge at home, if you do, its the best by far. I have owned mine for almost 5 years and no way will I give it up. Zero issues and only one set of tires and a 12V battery in over 4 years of use and 70k miles.

Other manufacturers offer thousands of option combinations for their vehicles. It’s one of the ways Tesla reduces cost but at the expense of offering customers more choices.

I know 7 people with Teslas and all said that they are not going back to ICE vehicles and 2 of them have 60-70 mile commute each way.
I put about 70-90 miles a day on my EV and have done multiple road trips with the entire family and will NEVER go back to an ICE car. IMO, at-home charging is a game changer for EV owners. It’s like waking up each morning with a “full tank” at a fraction of the cost of gasoline.

So after 10 years, I will still have 90% of my “tank” left, so that’s 297 miles of range - I think I’ll be able to go a little farther than the corner grocery store. And since ICE cars have 2000 moving parts vs EV’s 20 moving parts, I think I’ll also be in a better place with maintenance and upkeep vs my ICE-driving peers.

Elon made so many promises on offering new features to Tesla vehicles going back up to 10 years and never delivered on 90% of them. I would say Tesla will double the lay off amounts by the end of April.
Running a Manufacturing company is not easy especially as a new startup but Elon was trying to fool everyone when he was only fooling himself! Manufacturing vehicles is not like making cell phones, or computers by shipping them out and then re-tweak, and fix them out in the field.
There's a market for EV's its going to take at least another 5 years to work out all the bugs to gain peoples confidence back.

They are great for obvious reasons. They are also expensive hence the gov. subsidies.
No one is "forced" to buy and EV. If we don't support US EV/Battery development there will be no US industry left for the second gen. Second gen batteries that will arrive in mass between 2027-2030 will end ICE cars except for special vehicles. (People still ride horses). The problem with EV's is not the EV's it's the batteries. They already have better technology but it will take years to bring it to scale. With current technology EV's don't make sense for long distance driving.

I will keep saying this: Basically, anyone that can’t install a home charger, is traveling, cares about the environment, wants to tow stuff, a vehicle that doesn’t depreciate massively, cheaper insurance and repair bills, safety, to quickly fill their tank to 100%, greater range on a fill up, or a vehicle that doesn’t lose range over time, doesn’t want a stupid EV.

One thing to note is when you see EV's without federal tax credits, they automatically reduce their pricing accordingly. That means, that once you use the credit, the used Market also factors in that credit. It means that even though you might get the credit, the car pricing increases and your used market value also decreases. Most times from 7500 to 4k or less. I myself just bought a Bolt EUV for around 20k with less than 8500 miles on it. Even the 7500 credit isn't actually a full credit because you have to pay full price and wait for the credit while the used car market can just take the EV less the 7500 dollars plus used pricing. The Tax credits are actually killing the market. Instead, the gov't should just give the money to the battery makers to reduce the pricing of the batteries sold to dealers.
I don't know about anyone else, but I'm a little leery about buying a used battery.

One of the reasons why the big three are not selling EVs is that their dealers didn't want to sell them. Many dealers actually discourage customers from buying them because they don't need service.

Ev don’t need service? They have tires, brakes, cooing systems, ball joints, bushings. They are not service free.
Tesla doesn't build this way. It's why they have an over supply of EV's now. Their deliveries in Q1 were much lower than production.

EVs, right now, are the automotive equivalent of a VCR. They are not a like-kind replacement for an internal combustion engine. EVS will continue to fail in the marketplace until technology exists where you can recharge the battery in 10 minutes or less and get at least 250,000/20+ years of reliable use (just like most gas vehicles today),
