    Just wanted to share one of my favorite parts.
    Firas mentions the following: “You can’t base your life on something that’s frail. That can be taken from you.” I love that part because it reminded me of Dominick Cruz’s response to Helwani in saying that the greatest moment for him was realizing that he didn’t need the belt to be happy. It really opens up perspective.
    Relating back the segment, I can see how Cruz may have been fixated on chasing the road to what he felt might have lead to his happiness, but then realized it was more meaningful to let happiness ensue within the process.
    He's always talking about just enjoying the moment now, regardless of what he's doing. Even in his decision victory announcement, he looked like he didn't even care if he lost the decision. He just love the fact that he was apart of the process.
    I recommend everyone take time to check out the episode on inside quest.

    Meditation = mental training. Confronting your fears to immediately destroy them or shrink them = mental training. Visualization = mental training (though not as important as the first two, 'unless' we are talking about manifestation which would be considered just as important). Not staying in your comfort zone daily. Talking to new people, hot girls, sparring/fighting in front of lots of people, public speeches etc. Doing things with regularity where you feel outside of your comfort zone, and soon enough these will become your comfort zone. Fighting or speaking in front of lots of people will feel comfortable. Talking to hot girls, jumping from 300 foot bridges on a bungee cord will feel drinking a cup of tea. When you make hell your comfort zone, the universe is your oyster.

    Hi Firas, I think the science you asked for was the concept of 'ethics' as understood by the ancient greeks = the quest to reach a good (read as fulfilled) life. Taking that and combining it with 'Positive Psychology' as founded by Martin Seligman (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Positive_psychology) comes pretty close to provide us with some top notch advise. Best regards and thanks for the recommendations, Yann

    Firas put equation mark between psychology and treatment, especially within psycho dynamic approach and CBT paradigm. Sports psychology is still psychology. Moreover projection can play huge role in conflict scenario like a cage fight - what comes to mind is Conor talking about that his imagines that his opponent in a fight is himself and he delivers punishment to himself by using someone else as a proxy.
    I like that Firas put the right quote in the video.

    First off, I want to say thanks for putting out some of the best BJJ and mma videos on youtube. This one is especially refreshing as the mental side of these sports is underdeveloped in m opinion. It's great to see that being addressed. I will give one critique, which is that your assessment of psychology, while partially true, is somewhat obsolete. We've gone far beyond the subjective and problem-focused methods of the old days with experimental psychology. The problem-focused approach is still prevalent but now we're well into the process of developing solutions through experimentation and to a lesser extent correlational studies. I'd highly recommend looking into the work of B.F. Skinner for practical tools for athletes as well as the positive psychology work of Martin Seligman (which is a recently developed sub-field that goes beyond the problem-focus) and the research within the realm of sports psychology. I absolutely think you're right that this subject is very decentralized.

  • @11gingin
    @11gingin 8 лет назад +1

    i find its not about what anyone elses problem is, but what my problem is. i found my problem to be "i hate when someone bullies you, and the people that witnessed it just stare at you blankly like "what?""

    Two things he didn't touch on which are crucial to the 'how' of this. First you need a 'terrible purpose'. IOW, without a strong drive which you can't ignore, even if it's trivial, you will not use your knowledge to advance. Second, all of this 'knowing' has to be internalized. You might know but until it's internal or part of you, there is a barrier to implementing it. The purpose might be short term such as a match or a fun-run or some contest you aim to participate in. It might be an upcoming event such as a Class Reunion which will be the purpose to get you back on plan with a diet. You can 'create' terrible purpose, but it has to be 'real' to you.

    What do you think of the matrix trilogy in terms of self awareness and mental development? Because in my opinion that's what the entire trilogy is about, breaking mental barriers and becoming independent. Like in the first movie he accepts a cookie from the oracle and eats it without question. The second time they meet, when he now knows she is a part of the system, he's offered a candy but puts it in his pocket, and the third time they meet he rejects the candy completely. This is but one of many examples throughout the trilogy, and the biggest theme in the entire thing is: know thyself. Would love to hear your thoughts on this, assuming you have seen the movies.

It has been a constant theme in my life lately to improve myself, taking steps towards 'mastery'. However, I find along the way, it's hard to differentiate snake oil salesmen from those who truly have knowledge to share. Do you have any tips for avoiding 'snake oil salesmen' that seem to prey in this so called 'self help' area? Perhaps a resource for learning and applying critical thinking? Thanks again!

      Librería Literata Late reply, those are great names you mention. Seneca, Cicero, Marcus Aurelius and Epictetus, or any who wrote of Stoicism are brilliant resources for the modern man to learn to deal with success and defeat alike. I think we've become so soft and ungrateful due to our abundant societies that we can't deal with challenges that men in history had to face day to day. Warriors had to be both well studied and physically capable. Martial arts are the modern way to deal with this. It's good that you train the body for the mind. Take care.

    Hi Coach, I just started training BJJ 3 weeks ago and I'm getting destroyed. I watched your video on how to master jiu jitsu and it was tremendously helpful but im still having some issues. I didnt start on the same day as everyone else so Im just learning the things that the gym is teaching on that particular day - its a white belt class but its definitely not the beginning of the white belt curriculum. I dont know where to begin really and Im having trouble understanding the nomenclature. Im trying not to "live and die on the mat" and I want to focus on getting better but I dont feel I'm that I'm learning from the absolute basics and building from there. It's somewhat discouraging. Can you recommend any books or dvds that I can watch that will help me learn the basics? Thank you and sorry to bother you.

    • @CoachZahabi
      @CoachZahabi  8 лет назад +2

      +coolcat87 not a bother, this is what this channel is for. My first 3 weeks of training I was getting destroyed also. There is an incredible amount of BJJ material out there, find the teaching style you like best and invest in a basics series. Focus on what you can learn when you roll, "Getting destroyed" shouldn't not bother you in the least, check you ego at the door and focus all you have eon learning. Overtime you will start doing the tapping. Pay your dues - This is the cost of Progress.

      +Tristar Gym thank you for taking the time to answer, and youre absolutely right. one day at a time; ill just continue to improve. focus on the process itself and the how as opposed to the why. I live in New York, I really want to check out one of John Danaher's classes. I've seen him in some interviews and he's really brilliant. I like his style of teaching. thanks again, this meant a lot!

    The science of mental toughness would be something like the levels of stress hormones in the body and the individual's ability to control their own thoughts, and by implications their hormones, especially under pressure or through adversity.
    And how physical training, diet or positive thinking changes the individual's response to the environment.
    I feel like this whole video was 9 minutes of total non-content that never said anything meaningful. Albeit try-hard pseudo.
    For example, Freud is just one branch of psychology and his branch has not been relevant in psychology for 50 years, if ever...
    If you had read Aristotle.. or actual philosophy, you would know that Aristotle talked about psychology 2000 years before Freud -- which any freshmen in college will know.

    I mean it seems like your ego is clouding your judgement here while I am sure you know a lot of jiu jitsu, you are not qualified to teach academics on any level.
    Not to be rude but without any education you could probably not even teach 9th graders

    Mr. Zahabi,
    I appreciate and enjoy your videos on fighting techniques, and I will continue watching those. However, this video did not deliver on its title. The title implies that you will give your ideas on how to develop mental toughness, but you didn't do that. Instead, you directed me to another channel. I spent 9 minutes of my weekend watching this. If you continue to produce inaccurately titled videos, I will stop watching them and I will only watch the fighting technique videos.

      +bradlsagal thanks for the feed back. My intention was to set you on a path. I believe this is the starting point. Follow this course and you will in time see you didn't "waist 9 minutes".

      Your training partners have a huge play in your own physical wellbeing whilst training. You might want to pick your rolls more carefully, or talk to your coach about it. Or maybe that gym isn't right for you. Some gyms are more competitive and rough, they breed good athletes but shit humans. While other gyms are more about safety. The gym I go to is very competitive yet at the same time, about safety.
