It was not essential for their way of life to preserve their ways for the future. The lesson today is to make sure that we are raising warriors instead of soldiers. Warriors innovate, soldiers obey. Agreed. I am for free market capitalism, but if a society is 100% competition based with no safety net, it produces too much wealth gap and the downtrodden, ultimately leading to collapse in the form of revolution or societal depression. My home country South Korea is extremely competitive, and as a result it made economic miracle in the past half century, but the youth are burnt out and hopeless, leading to having the lowest child birth rate in the world. A healthy economy is one where everyone can utilize their unique strengths to contribute to society and themselves, both the competent/ambitious and those that aren't, relatively speaking.

This is the only time I've felt something you said is completely absurd and baseless. 1) Croissant is not a "luxurious" food, it is a fairly plain breakfast bread which you have talked up far too much both here and to your sons. One day your son will achieve enough to receive a croissant, and he will say, "THAT'S IT???!" 2) Sparta was a slave society so please don't use Spartiatae as an example of being mentally tough. They didn't cook their own food, make their own clothes, work their own fields, forge their own swords and armor, stable their own horse, make their own beds, etc. They were outnumbered by the slaves whi waited on them hand-and-foot by as many as 50 to 1. If you study their history more closely you will find that, despite their few inspiring battles that have attained the status of legend, the Spartans had a losing record. Here is a link to a brief synopsis of some of the more famous of their many defeats: www.historyandheadlines.com/is-sparta-overrated-a-list-of-spartan-defeats/
They lost more battles than they won, and I ask you...where are they now? Conquered is where. Largely because of their extreme overdependence on slavery. What could possibly be more opulent than having a bunch of slaves do all the work you don't want to do? 3) THIS! ISN'T! SPARTA! *offers croissant* if I ever meet your kid I'm gonna give him a fucking croissant. What will you do to stop me? Kick my ass? This isn't Sparta, man...that's assault you would go to jail for a long time. A croissant, or even a thousand croissants, will have no such impact on your kids' development as your anxious fantasy would have you believe. 4) Just curious, what is GSP's take on the croissant?
I usually find you insightful, but this is sheer nonsense. You say croissant makes a lad soft? Ok...PROVE IT.
