@@manhdepzai2k3Did you read the novels? If you didn’t, you are in for an amazing ride when season 3 comes out. Arcs 5 and 6 may be covered in over 30 episodes. Subaru as a character reaches all time top fictional character status in arcs 5 and 6, especially arc 6. He develops so much after season 2. If you haven’t read the novels for Re:Zero, I suggest you read it. It’s a masterpiece, even better than the anime. Anime Subaru is nothing compared to current novel Subaru.
Goal is kinda unfair. Pretty much any fictional character would beat Subaru in that department, because Subaru's only goal most of the time is just to keep going.
its mostly due to his character. we get told about it to begin with, subaru is a very easy going person who wants what he wants at that moment. meanwhile rudy is pretty dedicated to making his life better in his 2nd chance. also rudy is over multiple years. in comparison, subaru gains a lot less in terms to his overarching goals. the main one, which is making emilia ruler, is somewhat put to the backburner. but it’s interesting because everything subaru has done so far and somehow contributed to that goal, even if he initially has selfish and narrowminded goals in each arc. my point here is that re zero is a building up to something while rudy is gradually doing things he wants to do and fixing mistakes he made.
Subaru’s goal: survive everything else kinda gets put to the side when the universe decides it constantly wants to have you go up against the scariest people in the world
I think I got to be a little bit more on Subarus side. He’s not special at all really. And he can’t train to get an epic world shattering power. He literally has to make connections to bring people together. Moving straight into his non comfort zone immediately. It takes rudeus half the freakin story to break bad habits and it’s woe is me for too long for me to even like the dude. He’s what? 30-40 years old at the start of the story and repeats his past mistakes over and over. Where as Subaru has to change his attitude at every failure to progress. All in all I think Subaru adapts better where rudeus has the abilities but sucks with people for too long.
Rudeus said it himself. His life before reinarnation was largely empty to the point that life didn't flash before his eyes before his death because there was nothing worth. His battles with himself were as important as Subaru's. I don't think more time he lived actually mattered when it comes to expirience. After all what expirience can you get when you do nothing?
@@franciszekkapuscinski it’s not really the process. It’s the mind set. Subaru can adapt better hence why I like the character more. I couldn’t really get into a character who spent almost a whole second lifetime to change after sucking at his first so hard. You would think the lack of anything flashing before his eyes would make him more driven to be different then he was before. Subaru has his own issues though between self worth and self harm, plus being able to mentally tolerate death the way he does. He’s not sitting pretty in any way, but the fact that he doesn’t really have any world shattering magic or physical talent really sets it in for me.
@@cfh23666I would definitely say for the most part he was different. He basically mastered a lot magic types before he was 8 and learned 4 languages. Also had time teach one of people he taught is in the top 3 magic users in series. He reached his physical peak so had suit built for combat. I would his lack confidence is still a big issue.
One thing I disagree with. Subaru is most definitely special, he has an incredibly OP ability that completely outclasses everything else. No, it's not RBD, it's his unfathomable amounts of determination. Without his determination, his RBD would be completely useless. You saw what happened to Louis after just one loop.
Include the what ifs and Subaru knocks, include ayamatsu, tsugaharu, or greed. Those guys dedication to his goals are beyond understanding. Bros died 10,000 times trying to beat Reinhardt. So if you add the what if stories Subaru Knocks no-difference (this is mainly up to the reader, but even then)

Watched both and both are among my favorite anime’s. My top 3 list- Code Geass, Mushoku Tensei, ReZero. Reason MT is higher is because of the absurd amount of care placed in the animation. Seriously whoever’s animating it is in love with art and animation and is so dedicated behind the series you can tell by the details and how they construct the scenes.
Re:zero imo while having a worse animation quality came out during covid and they still pushed out amazing 30 minute episodes with no intro or outro to maximize the time and story. They truly are masters of their craft with true love for the anime they're working on.
I tried watching MT but i found it to be boring as shit, Plus him trying to take advantage of an underage girl while he knows hes mentally an adult also put me off so i just stopped watching it.
Alright thats it, imma read re zero LN. You guys made me excited, for me Rudeus is the best written isekai protag but i only watch re zero anime not the LN. I have to see Subaru's development in LN for myself yall convinced me enough
I agree, there's a lot of people here who hasn't read the LN, the moment Rudeus bit Orsted's foot is when Rudeus surpassed Subaru in my books. (and im a huge re zero fan). His development and theme of protecting family at all cost resonates with me a lot more.

Damn, I haven't readed or watched re: zero yet, but for some reason I really want to share my thoughts about mushoku tensei... Probably because this is my second and biggest novel so far, which I have read after a small romantic novel... It was about half a year ago, and it was amazing. Spring, the sun at dawn and sunset, a dark spring evening and night... My studies at school are ending, I devote less and less time to studying and more to reading... I have been reading literally for 10 hours a day, reading also during recess at school... And the wonderful world itself... As a book, no, as a fleeting life, you see how a character spends years traveling across continents... He meets hundreds of creatures on his way, makes mistakes, finds happiness, then again feels depressed and sad because of a mistake... You see that the world around you is really alive, and the characters that you saw a long time ago appear to you again as friends... Or enemies... A battle with God, with yourself and your past, with an alternative reality... In the end, finding peace, then fleeting decades of happiness, and in the end, that's how it should end... Then, looking at this book, at this world from afar, you realize that he lived, lives, and will continue to live, even despite the end of the story, and you can no longer influence it in any way... Yes, it was amazing and in some way changed my life and attitude towards it.
Thats the thing rudeus had a relatively easy life; he's gifted, girls fall in love with him easily and most people he meets automatically likes him. Thats why his problems/suffering are insignificant because he's so powerful that he just pulled the "time travel" bs to fix his problems. That completely negates all the stakes. If his problems were permanent tho then I wouldve enjoyed MT more. Subaru however has none of those things, he literally lived a life of suffering. He might have the most powerful magic in his world but it came with an immense price that its almost a double edged ability. Its truly satisfying to see a character who is weak af but still continues to push on, even sacrificing his sanity just to create a perfect timeline. His growth is also unmatched by only few characters and I could go on but my comment would be too long lmao. My point is if you liked MT you'll love re:zero even more
People in the commentsection clearly HAVEN'T read the LN of Mushoku Tensei Thats why they keep saying Character Development should go to Subara(not saying Subaru doesn't have a Great Character Development btw) but understand that Rudeus went from one of the scummiest person or even worst I've read to someone I can respect because of how far he have come. Sorry but I can't accept the fact that some of y'all are shitting on Rudeus while dickriding Subaru when they're both well written characters especially when you've only watched S1 and S2 cour 1 of MT if you want character development from Rudy then wait for cour 2 and future seasons.
i read both novels, rudeus is an incredible character and mushoku tensei is a phenomenal story, but if we talk about character development as something pure and raw, then subaru from arc 6 of rezero takes it pretty easily, not to belittle rudeus or mushoku, but it's something that is evident.
Honestly, they're both great characters. It's just that Subaru's story is more severe, and people (including me) tend to enjoy more severe stories. Rudeus got to take his trauma and flaws slowly. Subaru, meanwhile, had his flaws shoved in his face less than a month after being transported, and the consequences of failing to overcome them would be everyone he knows and loves. The main reason why I like Subaru better is not because he suffered more, but because I can trace his character development and articulate it much better than I can with Rudeus. If someone could do that for Rudeus for me, that'd be genuinely highly appreciated.
this are my both favourite isekai animes for far. I watched mushoku when the 1rst temp 1rst par was being launched, the same with re zero, that i watched in 2021 when the 2nd season was being launched.
Subaru's writing is definitely much better than rudeus, but the reason why i enjoyed reading rudeus more than subaru is because he had an ending. His death makes his character much more meaningfull
Thats a terrible conclusion. Its like saying bleach is far superior to OP because bleach had already ended. Make no mistake I love bleach more than OP but since OP hasnt ended yet, then comparing it to series which had already ended is just inaccurate
@@BarryAllen__1A23Don't get me wrong, i love subaru aswell, i love how realistic his struggles are, i love how realistic his mental problems are, i love all of that, but personally i like rudeus more, because as a reader, we read through his whole life, his birth, teenage years, fatherhood, and finaly death, and i love all of that, how real it feels, though it may be biased, this is my opinion.
@@bonfist7277 well, he went from a severely overweigh, gross, socially anxious pedophile that got off to a hidden camera of his underage cousin or niece or something at a funeral, to a sort of decent person that helps people and takes care of themselves. I think that's more development than going from a decent person to whatever you'd say to describe Subaru now
@@flandronha5541 No. Unless he becomes a terrible person and then has a comeback, it's not possible to beat Rudeus since there is a limit to how good you can be. Subaru wasn't a bad character at the beginning, so he didn't have enough room to improve to match Rudeus. He is a better person than Rudeus, but the amount he increased is less than Rudeus and my opinion on that can not be changed since it is rooted in what is essentially math
@@ExusiaiClips You clearly didn't read Re:Zero. Literally In Arc 6, Subaru try murder his friends and think break Emilia's neck. Subaru is a good person, but he have his sanity limits, the novels and IF stories prove this. Subaru don't changed to a terrible person in the anime thanks to Emilia, Rem and Otto.
Overall I think Rudeus only because his arc has finished and we see his full life from start to finish. It seems so bittersweet, as we see him run his course with many achievements, tragedies and growth. Very few shows we get to see the mc from young to old. Usually the main plot finishes and thats the end of the story, left on some cliffhanger showcasing a possible future for the mc (which isnt a bad ending). But in Mushouku we get to literally see his whole life as he passed away. Though I still think Subaru's speech at his own weaknesses/lack of character (ironically gives him more depth than most mcs) was probably one of my favorite moments of all time. The voice acting and his own self awareness at his own faults was absolutely beautifully done. I hate how that episode is overshadowed by his rejection of Rem (which personally I think was obvious and fit the situation) and many forget just how great a scene that was. Very difficult choice but I think Rudeus has the edge overall only due to how we saw his end already. May need to revisit this after rezero ends.
Good take. I don't really know if you've read the novel of Re:Zero based on the answer, so I'll toss it in here just in case. Subaru will undergo significant amounts of development, especially in Arc 6 (Season 4). The upcoming season (Arc 5) is mainly action packed, not an enormous amount of growth for him.
As much i like Mushuko tensei, But how dare you compare Subaru to Rudeus!? Subaru is one of the GOAT, not because he is overpowered but how he's able to remain sane with all the BS his been through.
"Anime=Rudeus" "Novel=Subaru" Can't argue more about that, sure the anime is good but they missed so MUCH things that we have on the novel And most of them are very importants to the story
Development based on the anime I think it goes to Rudeus simply because his problems are actually realistic Subaru’s problems rise almost exclusively in isekai world. But Rudy’s problems carries over to isekai world.
@@normaaliihminen722 You clearly did not watch second season, the moment you said "Subaru’s problems rise almost exclusively in isekai world" Proves that you did not.
Subaru is the strongest hands down, his abnormal mental fortitude is what makes him the strongest plus his ability to return and make correct choices though for a traumatic price. I can’t imagine going through 100M+ deaths just for a minor change to happen for the right path while trying to not let any of your friends die, it would definitely mess with your perception of reality and life meaning just think of PTSD
Everyone says Subaru is a bad character with no development, I wonder how those guys are gonna do after they die 3 times, Subaru mental is far superior than those who insult him
I watched more than 1000 anime and re zero is by far the greatest anime ..next to my Aot, code geas aand berserk.. Read the re zero web novel its fucking beautiful... most of re zero characters are masterfully written.... I can't decide between subaru and guts who should i choose as the best character ever done
I agree rudeus back story was more traumatic and he end up simply wasted his whole life but Subaru never got to live his full life. Rudeus parents died but at that point he has already given up however subaru's parents will never get closure and the last he did was leave them on bad terms although he reconsiled on his memories in the trials he know they're not his parents from the real world. Rudeus died in his past life and was granted a second chance in a new life while subaru never get to live it till the end and simply forced to die in a different world with no chance to return Rudeus no longer has ties with his old life while subaru has to continue to live through the pain of his parents who will never find the answer of his disappearence
Imagine if the two of them switched universes with their abilities. Maybe Subaru would finally be able to learn magic. Rudeus probably wouldn’t change much but the world of Re: Zero is much darker and have stronger characters.
@xXTigerWaveXx because Authority users are busted as Hell. The only ones that Rudeus has any chance of beating are Guese and Roy. Anyone else and he is most certainly dead. Also, most Authority users have little to no chill, with only a dew exceptions.
they are somewhat similar in many aspects tho. Both hikikomori. Both have and hard time accepting themselves, more specifically their past selves. Both suffer alot when being brought to the new world Both strive to be better than what they were. Both hide behind a front, although subaru does this alot more than rudy. Both mentally immature for their ages and how they both mature longer into the story. Still tho i kind of agree with you that they are different, but just because they are different it doesnt mean that you cant compare them.
Development? conclusion? better anime?, I don't know about rudeus but ompared to subarus development, no charecter can compare. Conclusion might be better since I dont know how jobless reincarnation ends. Better anime is definitely re zero
I I would say it’s a good comparison but I only watched the anime of re:zero so I could be wrong ,I think Subaru doesn’t really have that big of a backstory I would say the same for rudi but I think rudi has a better and clear backstory which actually serves the main story unlike Subaru
Both of these are different sides of the same coin. Rudeus has an A morality ( master morality ). While Subaru having a B morality (servant morality). Both become stronger by the things that don't break them down, even if it shakes them in the core they still energe out of it stronger, one yearns to live a happy life he never got, to live, to expirence life, and enjoy its beaty, to live love to its fullest and to become a stronger and better version of himself to protect what is important in his life and the people who he holds dear to himself ( Rudeus ) while the other dies to protect the promises he made with his loved ones who recognised and accepted him as someone precious... To savour the beautiful moments they lived together throughout everything... (Subaru)
Backstory shouldn't go to Rudeus. His past life only mention in detailed in the very first chapter, and other than that, it was Rudeus reflecting on it with Roxy and Nanahoshi. Subaru backstory have more importants and emotions as shown in arc 4 and 6. His family problem, the impersonation thing, and everything. And for writing, Subaru got it too since Subaru practically getting everything accept for character development. And story go to Re:zero, dude, Re:zero is more detail than Mushoku ever could (except for world building). And depth is Subaru... try read Arc 4 and Arc 6. Rudeus might get relationship with his problem with Eris, and conflict with Roxy, and the whole thing with paul, and also get character development (change), but Subaru get emotional complexity, internal conflict, goal, and backstory. Though, it's really is an opinion base as to what is better.
I think back story goes to rudeus because when he was on earth his life was nothing far more than a room but on the other hand subaru had a normal day to day life
I saw it so many times in different isekai-Anime that the person get isekaid after having a shit life before and had to die to be isekaid and now in the new World getting OP out of nothing. Very Original. However, MT might be a bit different in approaching it, but the Cliché of OP-Isekai-Protagonist still annoys me. I like MT, but Re:0 breaks this curse of a OP-Harem-Ecchi-Warlord-Magic-Sigma-Shit, if we are not talking 'bout Sidestorys or If-Storys
Honestly can people stop comparing these two series and just enjoy them for what they are (or if you are a fan of only 1 series just buy the Blu Rays of just that one)? It would be kind of strange of compare the Anti-tank soldier of Battlefield 1942 and Gordon Freeman of Half Life. Yes they are both from first person shooters. But people just enjoy the media for their own merits and doesn't go endlessly into comparisons between the games.
Rudy's life before reincarnation 1. He was living everyday to just jerk off to loli stuff 2. He was a full shut in after the school incident and the times he would try and go outside people would call him "mushroom dick" or sum like that 3. He didn't give a shit about his family or friends, he would push back the only person that came everyday to play games with him and tried getting him back to school, He also didn't want to go to his parents funeral(his parents tried they're best) And now you know that he was a total piece of shit, full on scum type. And now he's a father, a husband, a best friend, a protecter. Even on his ups and downs of life he tried his best to overcome anything.
W opinion! Both are my favorite and I honestly think they are equal in my opinion but rezero gets a slight edge here cus the complexity and depth it has for Subaru like the what ifs stories.
Decided I'd compare my two fav protags for today, my first non cote upload.

Yes, it was amazing and in some way changed my life and attitude towards it.
you should definetly watch it and then read until arc 6 or whatever you want to do, but this anime is very depressing especially the manga

Rudeus parents died but at that point he has already given up however subaru's parents will never get closure and the last he did was leave them on bad terms although he reconsiled on his memories in the trials he know they're not his parents from the real world.
Rudeus died in his past life and was granted a second chance in a new life while subaru never get to live it till the end and simply forced to die in a different world with no chance to return
Rudeus no longer has ties with his old life while subaru has to continue to live through the pain of his parents who will never find the answer of his disappearence

All to Subaru, its not even fair
Backstory should be rudeus and writing and story and depth
