  • Out at New Hogan Reservoir sessioning a hard climb. I've never been able to clean this section but today I'm gonna give it my best shot...or shots. Ha!

I'm currently trying to improve my skills in uphill rock gardens as well. The trails i've started riding regularly have some very gnarly sections where maintaining momentum to get over rocks while avoiding pedal strikes is challenging. But the hardest aspect has been trying to suppress the innate fear of stalling on rocks and falling over/backwards while still clipped into the SPD pedals (I come from more of a XC background). I have the un-clip muscle memory dialed and clips loose, but it's still proving to be quite a hurdle. I've considered switching flat pedals and five-ten shoes, but i'm so used to SPD pedals for everything else. I'm determined to improve my skills haha.
Have you faced the same issues?

Sam Prudden I know what you mean! I started MTB in actual toe clips (w the strap!) so when clipless came out I was ecstatic. When I got into Freeride/downhill I went to flats. I switched back to clipless just a year ago and I love it even on the technical stuff. However, even though I have my un-clip muscle memory dialed there is the occasion where I’m at an awkward angle and fail to get my foot out in time resulting in a slow motion fall - onto potentially painful rocks. Thankfully nothing more than bruises to show for it but the risk is definitely there.
I’ve found that sessioning short hard sections is helpful for building confidence in climbing tech. The more confident I am, the less I fear falling. The less I fear falling, the less I actually fall.
It’s a journey for sure! Practice makes progress! Cheers!
