  • In 2019 I had the opportunity to solo hike the John Muir Trail SOBO from Tuolumne Meadows to Whitney Portal. This ranked easily in my top 5 experiences of my life! 2019 was a heavy snow year so I was met with the added challenges of navigation, deep water crossings and long stretches on snow fields. In addition, I was dealing with terrible foot pain that made it impossible to walk without a hobble. With the help of Leuko tape, ibuprofen and determination, I completed the journey in 14 days. This is my experience...

Enjoy your trip! I always tell people when describing my experience on the JMT: It was far more difficult than I imagined it would be but far more rewarding than I hoped it would be.

very nice TY for sharing. What was your start date?

I started on July 11. I was not able to get a permit for Yosemite Valley and I really wanted to go South bound so I obtained a walk up permit at Tuolumne Meadows. I've been to Yosemite Valley many times so it was a good trade off for me.

Sweet 14 day trip. I'm sorry to hear about your foot problems, but am glad you completed it on a high/dry note.
It looks like most of the footage was done with your GoPro. Did you take many pics or videos w/ your GH5?

Thanks! Unfortunately, I had planned on mostly using that camera to film at camp. Although I took it out on trail several times, when I got to camp I mainly focused on a few daily camp chores and then got off my feet to give them some relief.

Hey Mark! I wasn’t able to secure a spot through the lottery for the happy isles start. Is the Lyell Canyon Trailhead much further along the trail? Will I miss anything big starting there? Thanks! Great vid

Starting at Lyell Canyon cuts off the first 20miles or so of the JMT from Happy Isles (Yosemite Valley) to Tuolumne Meadows. Yosemite Valley is one of the most majestic places on earth in my opinion. However, you can visit Yosemite Valley without a permit and day-hike all the major features. The heart of the JMT is in the big passes you will cross leading up to Mt. Whitney. You will definitely experience the best part of the trail starting from Lyell Canyon which gives out several walk up permits each day.
Another option is hiking the JMT Northbound. Obtaining a walk up trail permit at Cottonwood Pass is easy as the most popular JMT direction is Southbound. The downside is that you do Whitney first and then all the big passes at the front end of the trip before you have time and trail miles to get acclimated. Good luck!

@@MountainVenture thank you for the quick response! Sounds like Lyell canyon will be our starting point this year. Good luck on your future adventures!
