The lovely Monica makes another appearance ❤️❤️. Alan, Another excellent video. You have a great way of explaining these problems & how you go about solving the issues. 👍
Monica has something about her that makes her stand out! Unfortunately, I can't put my finger on it, although I wish I could.... Great video! Power washer was culprit!
monica has a lovely pair.... of goggles there... condensation buildup, sucked in by temp changes, been sitting at the bottom like that a while, minding its own, then boiled up on the long journey + shorted plug out. seal up with silicone grease around top after fully drying out. aah yes, snapped plugs on hcs, daily occurance
Solved my problems quickly and gave me the idea what happened to my ford fiesta as this morning the mechanic made an observation on my car and found plenty of water around the spark plugs and surprised why the car does not have much power. Great video
My first thought was that the selling dealer had pressure washed the engine bay to spruce it up. Just a little bit of inattention and you can blast a load of water where it should not be.
Fantastic Alan 🤩 I had a Mazda 323 back in the day and I did the very same thing 😆 I pressure washed the engine and hey 👋🏻 presto the plug holes were full of water and it stalled 😖 Love that Monica told the truth 👍🏻
A couple of observations to also consider - this was a common problem on the MK2 Focus petrol's if I recall correctly where a lot were fitted with faulty washer jet seals on the bonnet, and would leak directly onto the top of the engine as soon as you use the washer jets & subsequently leak into the spark plug chambers. Also in this case, look back at the video at around 3:33 & look closely at the coil pack connector - it also looks fouled from coming into contact with water. It may not necessarily be related but could also be contributing to the misfire due to the electrical connection being in contact with the water - this might well be two different issues in this instance but I would go back again & clean the connector to iron it out. Either way to me, this is definitely the result of water coming down from above & onto the engine.
I had a Fiesta that the core plug caused a similar problem. When it is was in getting fixed, Ford lent me a Focus and it suffered from the washer jet problem. So rather than sitting in a Ford dealer waiting for my car to be fixed, I spent a morning sitting waiting in a diffrent Ford dealer to have the loaner fixed :D lol. The Focus would have been a mk1 and not a mk2 though
Wet belt bring me to memory the 1.8 tdci in the MK4 Mondeo that many people didn't even knew they had 2 belts, a dry and a wet one that loved to snap..
Hi Alan. We Have A Few Of Those KA+'s In Cyprus (Where I Work) And We Have Had The Exact Same Problem With Those Engines. Speaking To A Colleague Of Mine Who Works For Ford Main Dealer Service Station, It's Apparently A Natural Problem On Those Engines Because Of The Length Of The Ignition Coil Hole Depth. We Live In A Warm Climate And Because Of The Excessive Heat, They Suffer From Condensation Down The Plug Holes. I'm Not Sure If That Is Just What Happened On Your KA+ Because You Had A Warm Summer. That's All I Can Put It Down To. Anyway, As Always, Great Video.
Probably The windscreen panel Allowing water in and you should check the Drain holes ,I had the same thing on a clio only when driving out of the Steep Drive and it knackered the wiper motor which was half full of Water 😢 As it would fill up 😅
Hello Alan, absolutely spot on with pressure washers, avoid like the plague. Yes have been there with motorcycle engines and repairing other people over tighting spark plugs. Never had it with a car engine though.
Good video allan ...ya hyunddai sonata ...same problem from rain water lyjng on the engine and finding way down the front 3 cy sparm coil holes ...on 3.3 eng ...i put a bead of bathroom silicon around the coil boots ...problem solved
Nice work Al, hope you got a brew and biscuits from Moni for sorting. Makes a case for plugging the plugs out at each service regardless of mileage. Hopefully you can do an annual service
Hi Alan just thinking, Monika said she had it pressure washed the day before the misfire - so I doubt if it would have got so rusty so quickly. Maybe she'd had it pressure washed a good few times in the past and it gradually got more rusty over time? My other theory is sudden heavy rainwater. About a month ago there was torrential really heavy rain here continuously for a couple of hours like I never seen before, causing flooding. Including my Mk3 Mondeo! I had to bail out the drivers footwell! My car never ever leaked water before, so that rain was really exceptional. Maybe you had that storm there in Huntingdon and that it found it's way into the engine compartment - and that the normal drainage channels couldn't cope? Anyway, glad it's sorted. Monika's car looks very smart. Cheers. Vivian.
I've had a few Ford's that have done this, no pressure washer used, the Focus did it when parked on a steep street facing down, the other was a a Fiesta and the screen washer jet like others have said.
Wet belts for Ford have been a disaster. I know people who get them swapped every 20k, through fear of them breaking. Scores of transit vans end up with scrapped engines due to the welt belt failing. Why they moved away from the chains they had in the 2.2 diesels, I'll never know.
I doubt any of them will ever have a timing belt change. Wet belts often degrade into the engine oil, block oil pump pick up then the engine seizes. They are only designed and built to last the 3yr PCP and about 30k miles.
Happened to my friends 2017 eco boost focus after 30k miles had Eml light on with engine timing codes and oil light on cleaned the strainer in the oil pump put back together runs spot on garage was telling him he needs a new engine 👀. And the engine sounded horrible while running sooo loud and could hear it was running dry no sounds sooo quite runs spot on!
Aw come on! how many detailers and car enthusiasts use a pressure washer every wash surely ford can make a car that can withstand modern wash techniques. I'd test it out with a pressure washer to ensure that is the cause and I'd be looking at the windscreen washer jets/ tubing just in case, maybe some silicone grease on the seals as a precaution to stop it in future, nice diagnosis and glad you got the plug out and miss monnie joined the show
Strange one Alan , the only thing I can think of with everything else taken into consideration is maybe some condensation being drawn in to the hot coil pack , it may be worth checking the other 2 plugs as a matter of caution.... 👍 Miss Monica looked very nice with her trendy hat on..... 🤠 Cheers
I had a similar case with water although without misfires on my 1.4 and 1.25 Fiestas Mk6 but didn't have them long enough to follow through. At the time I just removed the water, replaced the plugs putting a dab of copper grease on the threads so they wouldn't seize. They were pain to remove. Water ingress kind of makes sense now.. Had Mazda petrol cars previously and never experienced condensation b4, so I'm inclined to think it was jet washer or rain water...
Makes perfect sense, I remember having a Peugeot diesel some 20 years ago or so, pressure washed it, jetted nr scuttle and windshield bottom, it shorted out the electrics due to excess water, if I use a pressure washer now it’s at distance on main body and wheels, not close up or vents etc
Thanks for sharing Alan , it`s not summat daft like the bottom of the screen washer jet peeing all over the top of cam cover every time Monica selects wash /wipe ?
hi yes i did, it is resolved now. water dripping off the scuttle panel onto the rocker cover and seaping past the coil rubbers..we have sealed the scuttle panel ..i have a part 2 to that video which shows the problem
I've seen capillary water at bcm....but interesting you think it runs from washer bottle? I wonder if it can be cured at that end by sealing the cable? Any thoughts?
Alan. Do you need to change the flywheel when you change the cluthc on a mk3 mondeo petrol? I realise you can't tell me difinitely, it has about 137000miles on the clock.
Great video as always …. I once had a Citroen c3 in that had a similar problem and it was the washer jet in the bonnet leaking underneath and fill number 3 plug with water … I would think that water has been in there for a while how rusty it is …
When I wash cars I wash jet the scuttle but not to close only to get the debris out of the drain holes which could cause even more issues for example wiper motor, ecu, abs pump or even leak in the vehicle but always cover up important components
I'm wondering if the spark plug wasn't correctly torque down, from cold the condensation would push past the thread and as soon as its all upto temperature it seal's trapping moisture.🤔
Great information here Alan as usual but some very naughty Car Sales companies open the bonnet and use a Pressure washer 'Gently' on the outsides of the engine compartment (not a steam cleaner!) maybe this is the cause of the rust on the coil pack?
Alan I’ve got the same car bought it new on a 19 plate you’ve got me worried 😧. Should you not have checked the other two or did I miss that bit just sayin from north of Newcastle
I think your right with the jet wash.. only thing I could think of specially if its not been raining much...... talking about sparkplugs if you snapped that plug Monica would have ran your legs off round that car park 🤣🤣🤣 brilliant detailed video alan
But would it have become that rusty when the pressurewashing happened the previous day? Must be some other reason, at least for the rust. I'd also rather check the water jets as proposed by someone below.
Easy answer, take the car and pressure wash the engine, its right next to you, dry the engine off, see if any water went past the seals, I would add some electric grease to the boots, same issue with some Renaults, without the cover water can drop in the coil pack tubes. I used some Permatex Dielectric Grease or is that not recommended for fords?
Hey I degreased my engine I didn't go crazy. I ran it straight away for a while. Then it sit for 2 days and it was spluttering and the engine light was flashing. My mechanic said just drive it around for a bit and it will dry out. It ran for an 8 hrs drive . No engine light and another8 back. Should I still check the sparky holes? If I don't will it stuff my motor
I suppose something like wiper fluid could quite easily seep through that amount of rubber and do fast corrosion too. Though it's time for lottery ticket if it would happen to leak/spray right into coil pack.
The engine itself wasn't directly sprayed with the pressure washer though. Perhaps the water has been there for a while and eventually soaked up into a sensitive part of the plug/coil.
I had similar issues in my old mk2 2.8i V6 Galaxy. If the scuttle panal rubber seal perished, it pished water all over the coil packs and down to the plugs it went.
I leaned a couple of thing from this video….one don’t pressure wash you’re scuttle panel, two don’t get the missus to come and look at Monica’s hat…….👍😳😂🇮🇲😜
Snapped a plug on a focus all filled with engine oil at the time managed to remove the internals then used a extractor for the thread took 4 hrs but got it done and ran like a dream simple jobs always end in a nightmare for me lol
Pressure washer is the only reasonable explanation but why water only down one plug hole❓ Also, before replacing the coil pack I'd smear some silicone grease on the inner seal and on the working edge of the boot that makes contact with the rocker cover. Leave it now and see how it goes. If it gets water ingress again I'd try the silicone grease route next time if it happens again and see if it stops it❓
Sadly soon all combustion cars and trucks including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Car washs will be forbidden too because they are climate killers, now they want to slow down all the gas station pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime. (BABVVEN & TEBBVEN laws)
Let's hope the bottom crank pulley is not like the 3 pot Eco Boom Alan, its massively tight , special tools job , monika would cry if she has to spend a penny on that job , if she still has it then, water and spark plugs just dont mix especially at 150 psi plus , only designed for splash and rain , at least you e sorted it , yes we remember the endura 1.3 rattlers with their snap off spark plugs , I used to get them mad hot , get the plugs out and just put normal seated plugs in , same heat range , never had a problem and that was on a fleet of 20 of them , being driven nearly 20 hours a day in different shifts of opticians and later on emergency doctors, only really stopped for fuel and a wash , 75 thousand miles in a year , then they went onto focus 1.25 zetech engines, doingvthe same mileage , I was putting clutch kits in before the dealers , like you have done with your taxi boys 👍👍🤠🤠🤠(monika)🐕
@@alan4x hi Allan had a fiesta. Took to car wash, next day took doughter to work. Car started spluttering lifter bonnet found water around spark plugs. Had been forced threw scuttle panal on to engine. Took clips off scuttle panel used a sealent putt clips back solved the problem.
A wet belt. I’ve no idea why this would work better than a traditional belt. Didn’t like the rusty spark plug worry. Penetrating and wait a night. Great.
I've got a Ford Fiesta 2012 with low mileage. Twice I've had water getting down the coil packs from the scuttle after medium/heavy rain. The AA man knew all about the problem when I told him the symptom, he sees it all the time. I have a sloping driveway, which makes matters worse, if the car is pointing down the slope rainwater easily overwhelmes the scuttle. So now I have to park with the front of the car facing up the slope. I'm amazed Ford still haven't sorted this out after ten years. It's very poor design which surely could be easily fixed with an engine cover of some kind.
Miss moni is a sight for sore eyes. Stunning.

that would have been the simple answer to this problem but no cover on this engine
I leaned a couple of thing from this video….one don’t pressure wash you’re scuttle panel, two don’t get the missus to come and look at Monica’s hat…….👍😳😂🇮🇲😜
@10:54 .. what a nice pair of ... coils
Surely at that mileage, it’s still under Ford warranty?
no, its warranty has run out due to time..3 years old
If it's like the mk6 fiesta, the water got in from the windscreen washer jets.
cheers james, we sure we found thw answer, coming out in part 2
Snapped a plug on a focus all filled with engine oil at the time managed to remove the internals then used a extractor for the thread took 4 hrs but got it done and ran like a dream simple jobs always end in a nightmare for me lol
Pressure washer is the only reasonable explanation but why water only down one plug hole❓
Also, before replacing the coil pack I'd smear some silicone grease on the inner seal and on the working edge of the boot that makes contact with the rocker cover.
Leave it now and see how it goes. If it gets water ingress again I'd try the silicone grease route next time if it happens again and see if it stops it❓
Your definition of Hunstanton was brilliant🤣🤣
lol, its more a case of i have been there so many times its not interesting anymore
@@alan4x lol same hear it’s boring now.👍🏻
@@mick199625 lol
I had a Ford Focus 1.6 petrol engine 2009 with the same problem. I used to suck the water out with a turkey baster When he started misfiring
Sadly soon all combustion cars and trucks including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-(
In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025
on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county.
Let's hope the bottom crank pulley is not like the 3 pot Eco Boom Alan, its massively tight , special tools job , monika would cry if she has to spend a penny on that job , if she still has it then, water and spark plugs just dont mix especially at 150 psi plus , only designed for splash and rain , at least you e sorted it , yes we remember the endura 1.3 rattlers with their snap off spark plugs , I used to get them mad hot , get the plugs out and just put normal seated plugs in , same heat range , never had a problem and that was on a fleet of 20 of them , being driven nearly 20 hours a day in different shifts of opticians and later on emergency doctors, only really stopped for fuel and a wash , 75 thousand miles in a year , then they went onto focus 1.25 zetech engines, doingvthe same mileage , I was putting clutch kits in before the dealers , like you have done with your taxi boys 👍👍🤠🤠🤠(monika)🐕
thanks mike for your comment, she will sell that car before the cam belt needs doing with any luck
Check for the windscreen washer leaking 👍
thanks, part 2 coming out with the answer lol
@@alan4x hi Allan had a fiesta. Took to car wash, next day took doughter to work. Car started spluttering lifter bonnet found water around spark plugs. Had been forced threw scuttle panal on to engine. Took clips off scuttle panel used a sealent putt clips back solved the problem.
The state of that plug suggests that rust has been building up for some time
yes this is bothering me, part 2 coming out
Such a cutie Monica😍
Similar as 1.2 and 1.4 corsa engine rain water gets under Panel and down the Seals Common issue
A wet belt. I’ve no idea why this would work better than a traditional belt. Didn’t like the rusty spark plug worry. Penetrating and wait a night. Great.
i dont see the point in wet belts either lol
I've got a Ford Fiesta 2012 with low mileage. Twice I've had water getting down the coil packs from the scuttle after medium/heavy rain. The AA man knew all about the problem when I told him the symptom, he sees it all the time.
I have a sloping driveway, which makes matters worse, if the car is pointing down the slope rainwater easily overwhelmes the scuttle. So now I have to park with the front of the car facing up the slope. I'm amazed Ford still haven't sorted this out after ten years. It's very poor design which surely could be easily fixed with an engine cover of some kind.
thanks bruce, we sure we found the problem, part 2 coming out
What coil pack what spark plug, that's not what I see, I see 2 large shirt potatoes
shirt potatoes? is that queens English? never heard it before. regards from NL 😁

That engine is in the small peugeots no1 plug is always rusty and hard to come out
common problem then
it wasn't water she had in her sparkplug hole or exhaust hole
THANKIOU
😊
Always a pain when you get water in your rusty hole...
lol
Nice white top
I would have removed the other 2 coils Al.
You never know
Dont think he fancied his chances
i did, forgot to mention that in the video, part 2 coming out to explain more lol
