      @TheCrossFTW 2 года назад +26

      The thing about movies made in China is many times, the stuntmen are taking the hits. It may not be a full hit, but they are definitely being smacked around. Often times they will be offered extra pay to just straight get kicked/punched/hit for a scene to make it both easier to shoot and more realistic. I suspect many of the stuntmen in this scene did just that. The one where he takes a staff to the neck(2:16), he probably just took that hit with some minor padding on his neck under his clothes

    The scene before this one where they’re about to light the girl on fire and the martial artist steps up against the entire mafia brings me almost to tears. I think it’s cool how he’s not afraid to stand up to the army of people and take responsibility despite it not being his problem. I don’t get tear jerked like that a whole lot but the prelude to this scene is fantastic.

    I still vividly remember watching this movie, stoned out of my mind, at some mountain cottage party with some folks. I wasn't really exposed to asian cinema at that time and I didn't know what Stephen Chow had in store for me. Initially, the movie seemed like a silly parody that I had to sit through, but the introduction/reveal of Donut and especially the Tailor's kung-fu side was a shock that glued me to the screen for the rest of the movie. I still get shivers running down my spine everytime I see this scene, along with many more (the blind harp duo, the lion's roar, the Beast catching the bullet etc etc) thanks also to the soundtrack, which is as mighty as any other component of the movie.

    @赤の狼 2 года назад +87

    I forgot where I read this, but I think the metal rings on the tailor's arm represents the "level" in his kung-fu style (铁线拳), and not just for protection against the axe! So, obviously his fighting style focusses a lot on punching, and the metal rings are also a signature to this type of kung-fu. They will wear the metal rings during training to improve their arm strength. As the training progress, they will add on more rings when they get stronger and better in that kung-fu (level up!).
    Fun facts: The tailor in the movie is ACTUALLY a real kung fu master!

    What I love about this, spoiler alert, is Chow is working on so may levels in this film, playing with many martial arts dim stereotypes. For instance, her you have the unexpected heroes who fend off the bad guys, but it is all misdirection as the are defeated by other villains and they are NOT the focus of the story, but they work to further the plot.
    This is such a great film. I have had it on DVD since it came out all those years ago.

    I really like the tone of this movie. The modern martial arts films are mostly focused on how realistic the action would look, while this one just goes "we all know it's not real, and what's so wrong about that?". And it just goes one step further: exaggerate every action CGI. And it worked, we really loved it.

    The saddest part about this was the three of them is just trying to live a normal life, and earn an honest living from what they could do, without using their kungfu ability and leave that life behind. But the first time they use it, it's to protect other who helpless. And they got killed by The Harpist, who use their ability for killing, and got paid for it

      If all 3 are equally skilled the staff master would be strongest because he has a weapon, and his weapon has the longest reach. Only way for an unarmed person to beat an armed person would be if the unarmed person was vastly more skilled than the armed person.

      @@chi7818 Yup, in real life, spear fighters were the ones who ruled the battlefield, not swords. The sword was like a pistol. Weapon of last resort.
