  • In today's video we visit Sibiu Romania, which we stayed in for 17 days. We'll meet with a Romanian local named Carmen who provided her advice regarding shopping, sightseeing and where to service our automobile, and of course we share our expenses and first impressions of Sibiu's livability and quality of life. Sibiu and the surrounding communities have many foreigners calling the region home due to the low cost of living and quality of life. The average US Retiree on Social Security receives $1,550 a month, and a couple on Social Security receives over $2,500 a month. A US Expat living on Social Security can expect a lower cost of living in Romania when compared to the living costs in the US.
    Currently the Romanian exchange rate is 4.68 Lei to $1.00 USD

    Romania is not a member of the Schengen Agreement which makes it a great place for a non Schengen home base.
    The Schengen Agreement has ruined the dream for millions around the world to slow travel through Europe. Gone are the days of crossing from Spain to France and resetting your clock in a neighboring country. If your country is not a member of Schengen you have to look at these 26 countries as one, an American can only spend 90 days out of 180 days between all 26 countries. Romania and a handful of European countries including the UK are options to live in to reset your Schengen clock. If you’re an American, Canadian, Australian, New Zealander, or from South Africa a Non-Schengen country like Romania should be in consideration for your investment budget. Even if you’re not choosing residency in Romania, it’s a great place to live 90 out of 180 days if you need to leave the Schengen. There are some residency options available through a few Schengen countries, but most of these require €250,000-€1,000,000 invested in or paid to the country. Italy has some options that are vaguely written and subjective to local decisions that can be inconsistent.

    Do you want to live abroad as an Expat? Are you looking for affordable and viable options? We are exploring the world to see what it's like to live in a country, and also discover if Residency is an option.
    We began our retirement in March of 2020 with the intent to travel the world, spending 1-3 months in a country or location. We want to see what it's like to live there and not simply visit, and we want to share these experiences and the costs with whoever wishes to follow along.
    We will make a commission on these links, your rates are not impacted.

    I really love the videos I've seen of Romania, and yours is great, too. The vendors seem particularly friendly! So far, out of the Eastern European countries, where would you choose to retire? I've got property in Italy, and am thinking of relocating my business there, but may also open a corporation in Eastern Europe and purchase a rural property. Would be grateful to hear your honest opinions. Safe travels.

      We are undecided about ourselves, but let me recommend that you check out Montenegro which we have quite a few videos on. We are heading back there tomorrow from Sofia. We own in Kotor old town.

    Warren & Julie: I watch all your videos - Some new and some old, however I have caught up with most of them.
    Tip: When you talk about IM global in your videos, I am happy you let everyone know that you get a commission, however I suggest that you should say "at no additional cost to you" (you being the customer), so that people would prefer to use your link for the Medical Insurance. Looking forward for more of your videos.

    Thanks for showing us the grocery shopping. Do MOST Airbnb have items like sharp knives to cut produce? and obviously plates, cups, utensils, etc....

      If they have a kitchen yes, we did have one in Plovdiv with a beautiful kitchen and nothing to cook or eat on.
      Confirming with the owner on chat is a good way to confirm first.

    $95 to get an oil change?? Oh my!! Not cheap in Romania!

      if they go to an independent garage, it is a loooot cheaper

      @@cip5949 I was thinking about 10 dollars for a liter of oil.. It holds about 4 liter, so that would be 40 dollars. Plus 15 dollars labor and a total of 65 dollars, max!

      @@comrade916 its 7-8 $ liter. Filter 12. but the rest its the dealers price. That's what happens when you go to a dealer that has a whole office building to mentain and to pay employees. And it doesn't sell cars every day,.. if you go to some independent garages labor is free !!!!!!!!!!!!! u just pay for oil and filter

    • @WarrenJulieTravel

      We were very disappointed in the cost. We were unaware we were going to a dealer. Not speaking the language will costs you sometimes unfortunately.

    Did you get the branza de burduf cheese from the market? I love how it's good in one way when it's fresh and another when it's getting more matured. Saves a lot of trips to the shops when you get a ball of cheese, you don't have to watch for the expiration date. Unless you don't manage to finish it in two or three months after you've first tasted it.

    now, how is this, compared to Turkey?

    • @comrade916
      @comrade916 2 года назад +1

      I have never been to Romania nor Turkey.. Turkey seems more modern, regarding infrastructure.. Prices are much lower in Turkey. Though secular by law, Turkey is a Muslim state. I have heard that it is common practice to price gouge foreigners in both Turkey and Romania, although I think it is worse in Turkey.. Turks do seem to have great compassion for the street dogs and cats.... I think Gandhi once made a comment that to judge the civility of a nation, is to look how they treat animals.. I have traveled to 38 countries in my life and I'm always looking for that perfect place to retire.. I haven't found it yet!

    • @cip5949
      @cip5949 2 года назад

      @@comrade916 u shouldn't answer if u have not been there! Turkey seems modern because thats what dictators do, they trick the world and make them belive they equale the civilized countries. Visit some east rural ares of Turkey to see how 3rd world looks like. Then compare Turkey to eastern europe

    • @comrade916
      @comrade916 2 года назад +1

      @@cip5949 Yes, you are correct.. I am only going by what I have heard friends tell me.. I am sure that there are many parts of Turkey that are quite "third world." Last fall, I visited Estonia.. Tallinn, Tartu, and Parnu are quite modern.. In fact, Tallinn is super modern, but the countryside is not so much... Estonia has done so well since breaking away from Russia, that their wages are higher than Spain.. The decision is still out regarding Eastern Europe... Not a one, is really booming economically.. I'm guessing that Eastern Europe will remain rather poor the coming decades with no real improvement for their society... I think much has to do with corruption and endless, government red tape.

      @@comrade916 again, misunderstanding. Maybe in the capital they have the medium income of Spain. But there is the rest of Estonia. And Span has a caputal much welthier than estonia therefore the income is higher than the rest of the country

      @@cip5949 I think you are the only one that is misunderstanding.. Estonia has a higher GDP per capita than Spain.. Period! I'm curious to how many countries you have visited and what your understanding is of world economics..
