  • www.kayakingCTwithlou.com Short DIY Kayak Accessory video about the updates that I've added to my kayak. These kayak updates are inexpensive and some are made from items found around the house. I really like the idea of using the retractable leash (inside) the kayak... Only mod I did with that is that I used a carabiner clip and on my anchor trolley I used a larger ring.
For your light/pole. Get PVC just a hair larger than the hole and heat it with a heat gun and slide it in the hole for a perfect water tight fit. I USE PVC FOR EVERYTHING!
I built my complete rudder out of PVC. I use an old ski pole as my steak out pole (they come in pairs!) For mounting anything to a kayak I use bits of plastic cutting board or flattened PVC on the inside to add strength.
ALL CAMERA MOUNTS ARE 1/4 20 THREAD.
I make my own gear tracks too.
I did like and subscribe... Thanks for the great outside the box thinking!

i was always raised very spoilt and if i needed something we would go out and buy it. it was never an idea to try and build it but now iam an adult i value videos like this that are so intuitive and huge money savers! if you make any more videos about it you should film the instillation process

+jett gordon thank you for your encouraging remarks. I don't remember a time when I wasn't creating...one of my fav shows on as a kid was McGiver (spelling?) LOL. I was recently in Home Depot picking up fittings for our new furnace installation--when I saw a green lawn sprinkler cover--the green caught my eye LOL (kinda matched my kayak). I looked around a bit and found a flexible light weight end cap cover. I'm going to see if this can be made into a cheap storage cover and compartment/cup holder...I will try to video as much of the process as I can ; ) ...and post it if it works LOL So glad the vids are helping others!

Lou - I admire your ingenious spirit. It's always great to see some one take spare parts and make them work for a purpose beyond their original design. As much as I like nice things, spending money to solve a problem is a form of shallow instant gratification. Repurposing, designing and modifying things to make something truly original and practical is whats truly valuable because it builds skills. Have you been to Maker Faire yet?

Hi Lou, I realy enjoyed your creative and recycling ideas you used on your kayak! Just bought one secondhand (very cheap MI 514 Tourer) and was looking for mods and practical DIY-ideas to make it more useable (for fishing for example). It seems like we're quite simular; I love to recycle materials in a proper way, especially fun when you can start thinking out of the box. I started cutting into my kayak today to add an watertight compartement. Still have to plastic-weld it close. Other mods I want are fishingrodholders, camera mount, maybe an ankerline... Maybe I should make a YT-video about it ;) Enjoy your time out on the water and keep those creative idea's coming...

have you practice flipping that kayak with all those gadgets in deep water ? you will see how all those ropes or line become a spider web around you or even if you can reach the knife to cut them off of you, I would carry a neck knife to be more practical in that case... nothing worse to feel trapped under cold water with all kinds of tether lines floating around or holding you back all tangled... be aware, the more things you put ,the heavier it will get to rescue it,specially that it is a sit in kayak and will fill up with water and heavy tow or even push by swimming,... sorry for my party pooper comment but I am a rescue diver and safety should be always kept in mind because there will be a time that everyone in a kayak will flip over and find out how things get dangerous in a second...good luck!

No Chris. It is an older Heritage and came that way. I did cut a hole, edge it, and drop a cooler into the back of that yak.. LOL You could add a hatch kit to the back of your yak if your at all mechanically inclined.
