The finished products look fantastic, but I wonder about the health of the women who produce these pieces. If they are working with cinnabar on a regular basis without gloves, I would think they would eventually suffer from mercury related health problems. Cinnabar is a primary ore of mercury.

Yes: cinnabar is essentially mercury sulfide. In the video you can hear the sound of a river; you can be sure that there is where they wash their instruments and most likely dump waste, to eventually eat it back [right there or downstream] because fish absorb and retain a lot of mercury. Same thing with us and tuna. I remember when I was working for a non-profit that it was easy as a outsider to spot this in communities that use herbicides and agrochemicals; you see a lot of kids in wheelchairs, with cognitive disorders and deformities.
In urban areas this is harder to see because we spend most of our life in indoors [and we are used to spend most of our time with people that live far from us as opposed to with the people that live in the vicinity] but we also have a high incidence of alzheimer, autism, cancer and all soft of gland issues. especially in females. We are what we do as much as what we eat.

asbaDoce not essentially, it IS mercury sulfide.

Mercury Sulfide (cinnabar) isn't soluble in water, which means it really doesn't absorb into the skin, making it pretty harmless to touch. If it was mercury nitrate or mercury chloride, that's a different story.

It would however, be dangerous to ingest.
