@@joebesch yes, I agree, this was a great video, I’m headed to the Horse Heaven Mercury mine, it’s a ghost town here in Oregon. I am excited to go look around for some cinnabar and try these processes out for myself! Thank you for the great video!
🛑🚫Maybe the heating process(double-boiling) should be done either outdoors or under a fume hood, to reduce exposure to mercury fumes which are undoubtedly being released when heated(??)
I was hesitant to at first. I am not an expert by any means, but the boiling point for mercury is over 600 degrees, and my little hot plate barely can boil water.
@@joebesch i believe the “extraction” temp for mercury is around 480C ~ 495C but the Mineral is likely to produce some mercury vapour at much lower temps. Please be careful :)

Looks gorgeous. It's pretty awesome you were actually hunting for the stone yourself, shame you couldn't find it. But still nice that you can purchase it online. A friend has gotten a few interesting earths for testing, but nothing quite as beautiful as this.
@@bombasticborneo not sure if heating to that temp is a good idea. This stone is the source of mercury, and that might release some toxic stuff. But I don't know much about glazing.
Wow what a great video, I have been wondering how the process of pigment purification works as I have a few precious stones that I am thinking of making pigment from. Specifically blue dumortierite, would you have any suggestions for this mineral?
Interesting. Not familiar with that one. Removing unwanted material is somewhat different with every mineral, depending on the composition. With cinnabar, I knew some of its long history of use as an artists pigment, but much in this video is experimenting to purify it. You could start by grinding it up and mixing it with your preferred medium.
@@l0I0I0I0 every mineral has its own characteristics, including reacting differently with different mediums. For the most part, I use linseed oil for most of the colors. Sometimes I'll use walnut for blues and whites. Michael Price has a great book called Renaissance mysterys that talks a lot about this stuff

A casein solution, kremer pigments has it in their online store. It wasn't an easy process by any means. What ended up working the best for me was putting all the powder in a bag made out of a scrap of linen, and gently dipping and swirling that into a bowl of the casein solution. The cinnabar was mostly removed and settle to the bottom. Hope this helps
Honestly, not an easy thing to track down. Most gem shops don't seem interested, surprising to be because it is used somewhat as a healing stone. Sometimes I have luck on ebay. When I see something, I usually grab it.

cinnabar is the natural form of mercury which is toxic when touched. There seems to be debate about how toxic cinnabar is before the mercury is extracted. I take care to use face masks when using the pigment, but I don't use gloves, maybe I should. I always wash my hands right away after handling any raw pigments.
@@joebesch FYI as you probably know now, some forms of mercury can kill you in days through a single touch, and you never know what kind you might find. It can cause nirilogical issues as well making it hard to make decisions. Personally I would still try it if I wanted it but use two set of specialized gloves and rated gas mask outside away from animals. GL thanks for sharing.
Cinnabar could found everywhere but you must recognize a red stone first...if you think it bauxite it aluminum...also a colour is important to recognize cinnabar. I found cinnabar but I have some problem...I not good at making mercury but I good at melting metal. Ok,have a nice day while looking for cinnabar at home. Ok bye.

Toxic in high doses, if it has native Mercury keep away from heat and in a air tight box, do not grind down or dry saw 🙈

Cinnabar contains mercury. Ancient peoples collected the vapors while heating it. People watching this should be aware that the fumes can be toxic.
Gloves, dust mask, not heating.... mercury exposure in major amounts here.
Great experiment! I like to experiment with paints too.
