This movie made me cry. I lost a friend due to hazing. It's like having his story finally being told. He was found in the woods shirtless, no pants and breathless. He would have made it had someone taken him to the hospital but they cared more about not getting caught than helping him. He was bruised up and died of alcohol poisoning. He wasn't one to ever drink much maybe once in a blue moon. He wouldn't tell me anything .... This movie hit home .... Rip Elijah. .. I will never pledge because I hear the sororities are just as bad

I think the reason Zurich and his LB continued on with Hell Week after the Kings and Queens talk was because he knew the only way to treat future pledges with respect was to complete the process. They were willing to sacrifice themselves in order to make that change when they held the positions of power.

Zurich gave the King speech basically telling them that yes they were going to get beat, yes it was going to be bad, but once they got in, they were going to make sure that they could change things from the inside. That they could help to make the frat treat the pledges less like animals.
He was intoo deep at that point, he was going to finish....but he needed to remind everyone that now isn't always.

I know a lot of the "Divine 9" are upset that this has been released. I
am glad that it has been released. Unfortunately I chose to pledge in a
sorority. I was ignorant to the whole process and did not know that
there was an underground line who was being hazed badly. I was unaware
the whole time until the probate. At the probate, I was under the
impression that I had a slot/number in my line to be totally
disrespected and made to feel so minute when one of my "supposedly" line
sisters obtain my number. I sat in the background completely shocked
and dumbfound to what was going on. The fact that no one told me about
anyone of this was absurd. I had no bond with any of my line sisters as
they went through a process the summer before. I had no idea about
any of it as I was a newcomer. Just because you sit back and get your
ass beat and totally degrade yourself does not make you any more apart
of an organization than anyone else. And it is crazy that people call
you "paper" because you did not stoop to that foolishness. And then
these organizations always have the nerve to say they "Christian" based.
To hell with that, this is some "Demon" based shit. Nothing about
that is Christ-like. This is why I do not associate with anyone in the
organization that I was apart of. It was a total lie! I thought that I
was joining an organization that really had a moto of helping people
and doing good things to find out in the end that this is a whole
political scheme and show off. The sad thing is, I was ready to work...
to really help people... and now they lost all respect from me and I
would not lift a finger for they ass knowing their motives are impure. I
avoid step shows and any greek festivities because I am embarrassed and
do not want to be associated with foolishness like that. I regret
every doing it and could have used my money for a greater purpose.
    LISTEN and LEARN! TRUE STORY!

Couple of things...1) The movie is what it is. Write, and direct one that shows your process if you don't feel it portrays "Going Greek" correctly. Unfortunately 95% was spot on for me.2) "It's easier to build strong children than to rebuild broken men." This is not about protecting Greeks but saving lives. It's funny how many people who can't relate shun the focus. I wouldn't wish my pledge process on my worst enemy. This film was mild...
My hat goes off to the brother who had the courage to put it out there. If you don't know now you know.
PS. Dude was not put off line for helping his LB. He failed the mental test and walked off! SMH. Why did his LB's let him leave?... is a better question. The mental part of pledging was exposed off the bat.

I watched this and honestly felt like it was an accurate portrayal of pledging, as for myself I had those same feelings as far as Zurick was concerned. My best friend told me that i was paying for friends and my girl at that time was super in my corner. Most people who consider themselves leaders think that that can do the most good from the inside but the climbing that mountain to cross those sands aint easy. I think it starts with the fact that you have to "Earn" it but you shouldnt have to be willing to Die from it. Evaluate the bruhs on yard, like ol big dude who got off bu hitting folks, naw Dean shouldve checked him from jump. You always should have 2-3 bruhs who help facilitate learning and curves the blunt force hit. Lastly, again old big dude shouldve been out when he flung that thick spit in ol buddy face.

    @cmitch8667 7 лет назад +96

I thought that at the end of the movie Zurich finally called his dad because he realized that his dad was trying to warn his son of the dangers of hell week. Hell week is probably scheduled at the same time each year and Zurich's father was also interested in pledging the same Lamda whatever whatever fraternity during his time in school. However, Zurich's father did not go through with the process due to his disapproval of the unjust torture and hazing going on. It can also be implied that Zurich's father witnessed the murder of a young man on his potential line back when he was in school and was calling Zurich to warn him not to pledge the same fraternity or not to get caught up in the hype or madness, and never to forget where he comes from. That he is of King and Queen stature and that he doesn't need a fraternity to degrade him and beat him like a slave to possess what he desires in life, because the courage and ability required to do so already exists within him. I could keep going on and on about this, but if yall understand even half of what I said, PLEASE THUMBS UP THIS COMMENT SO THAT OTHERS MAY READ, RESPOND, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY THINK ABOUT WHAT THE MOVIE REALLY IS ABOUT!
Sorry I left one more thing out... What if the Dean of the school was on the line with Zurich's father when a fellow line member was killed. Zurich's father did the right thing by standing up to the fraternity, backing down from the line, and realizing that his "brother" just died for absolutely nothing! & Obviously the Dean of the school still went through with the initiation process and became a "Lamda etc etc". But here's the kicker, Zurich's father wanted to warn Zurich about the fraternity, and the Dean specifically "nominated" Zurich for the fraternity, knowing of his father's history and wants to get back at Zurich's dad for leaving the frat and breaking the tradition. So he does everything he can to get into Zurich's head and bring him into the frat, not allowing him to back down and do the right thing like his father! What yall think? I'm open to comments lol

I had such a big problem with all this brotherhood talk and the minute real shyt happens they have gone to far they were willing to drop of there brother at the hospital and smash off. How is that a brotherhood anything? I think hazing will be the death of NPHC and it needs to be stopped. Btw, BGLOs are not the only ones that haze. All of our founders were "paper". You think they went around hazing each other? Now, I went through a process but was not hazed severely like the men in the movie. That was extreme. BUT, we still need to stop hazing. There are other ways to build character and bonds with potential new members. We need to find those ways before we all end up being banned from universities.

Regular people do not like to be beaten, spat on, paddled, forced to eat dog food, forced in to pools blindfolded, battered to the point of an epileptic seizure, or made to endure a week of extreme hazing with a broken rib. All of which you said wasn't unrealistic. Only a fool would willingly participate, and it's why I'm thinking twice about participating in black Greek life. The risk seems greater than the reward.

    • @MrBlusoul
      @MrBlusoul 5 лет назад +21

This certainly isn't brotherhood and God has no part in this. I'm glad so many have gone through the process and prevailed. But would they suffer such indignity for the purpose of salvation? These oaths, false gods, beatings, hazing, secret meetings, deaths and only God knows. I too was to pledge a BGO during undergrad... But I decided at the last moment not to pledge. A guy ended up getting dropped on his head, they broke his neck, he was paralyzed the rest of his life, basically a vegetable. But this is brotherhood. Some went to prison over this fiasco, and the young man in question was never the same all because he wanted to be a part of an "amazing" organization. Then current members have the audacity to say research research research... WE ARE RESEARCHING and finding that what you advertise is not what goes on behind closed doors or in secret. And the last time I researched I didn't have to join a torturous demonic cult in order to do community service and make a difference.

    • @amatullahsaafir685
      @amatullahsaafir685 4 года назад +1

@@MrBlusoul cult is correct. Plus the "secret" pledge process for most are published online. The words of the pledge is straight up idolatry. The "faith" they put in *insert 1-3 Greek letters* is the faith they should be putting in God. NO ONE should PRAY to a false god, saying things like "O Alpha Kappa Alpha, we greet Thee, may we always cherish Thy name with all our might, we honor and revere Thee, our heads to Thee we bow." Quoted from the AKA Memorial service prayer. They pray this prayer at the death of an AKA. Like woah 😳. This is called a prayer, TO a false god. So all these good deeds and community service but done for the sake of the false god instead of for God almighty. And on top of it, with pushes to disobey God with indulges in alcohol and fornication. For the sake of Greek life. That's a big big no. I pray God guides people out. Im sure the originators were God fearing people with good intentions but there have definitely been lots of Satanic influences since then all this kneeling and praying to these idols. The hazing makes the loyal to their gods bc who will give it up after going through all that. It's sad.

Great commentary frat. I agree with a lot of what you covered and disagree with some. To your point about the "we are kings" scene. I saw that as the call to action to say... "we will go through this chaos, get in, and change it for the better...because that's what kings (leaders) do." That's exactly what we did during and after my process. Be the change. Secondly, I don't think it gave our organizations a bad rap. I think it was an accurate depiction of many people's lived experiences. This is the subculture that we created and we should spend more time being introspective for continual improvement. This movie is the perfect and needed mirror. Thanks, for the review.

I have not seen the film (since I know I wouldn't be able take the hazing, which is the point of this movie), but I would agree with you in feeling conflicted on it. Art is supposed to depict life and provide us the opportunity to experience something we were not able to in our own lives, which it sounds like this movie does very well. However, greek life gets such a bad rap as it is and I don't want to continue that public narrative. Thank you for your great review and I hope people can come to a better understanding of what greek life and the greek family is supposed to be.

I think you really made a valid point about turning around and liking the people that tormented you. I really think that cycle should be broken. What made the greek community get in such an uproar was because that they don't want this cycle to break because of their traumatic experiences would suddenly mean nothing if it changed.

I joined Kappa Beta Gamma International Sorority in Fall of 2016 at the Alpha Epsilon Chapter. Never once when I was going through education was hazed or even thought I would be hazed. My organization is so strict on being anti-haze that if nationals even thinks you are hazing, you will be shut down. Plus, as you said, pledging or going through a new member process is supposed to lift you up and bond you closer to your class sisters and the sisters that have joined before you. Plus, my organization is a Christian-based sorority in our motto and values, so it would look terrible if hazing occurred. If fact, new member education just made me fall into a deeper understanding and love for my sorority and made me even more excited to wear letters for the first time. Thank you for addressing hazing in the way you did and the review of the movie was excellent! Love in Kappa, man! 💙💛

Most of these things did not happen to me but I did hear of such in all fraternities over the years. Was it either? Let's just say it is a lot easier today and rightly so.

Frat, I have not seen this movie yet. I stumbled across your video, so first let me say, 06'. I now know I will watch this movie tonight, as your review and the comments have me intrigued. I am from the old school, crossed over 3/9/89, have a brand on my left arm, and the experience was extremely brutal. My Sands, of which there were 4 of us, split off from a line of 14 total, because we attended a college an hour away that did not have an Alpha chapter of its own, so in order to pledge, we traveled an hour back and forth daily, to a college which did. Our experience, obviously fell into some deep waters because we were removed from any oversight by being away from our own college environment. We also pledged at a college which was down the road from two HBCU's and back then, we were taken to every chapter in that area of the state and sometimes across the state line to another HBCU, "kidnapped", as it was referred to at that time. We definitely were changed men by the time we were finished because of all that I said, we went on line in the fall of 1988 and crossed in the spring of 1989 because none of us knew any better. It was a graduate chapter member who stumbled across us and learned about our journey that essentially established our finish line. NOW you can see, we had some choices at the end, become extremely bitter because we had some hellish experiences, or stay the course of why we joined which was to serve the black community by, like you said, uplifting others. We chose the latter, however, we were bitter, yet didn't realize it until we, ourselves, began doing what we said we wouldn't do when we pledged our first group a year later. Subconsciously, we became the product we experienced ourselves. Moving forward, post graduating, beginning real life, three of the four of us have grown into very successful community oriented men truly uplifting our communities as best we can. We chose to hold onto the "why" Alpha Phi Alpha is an excellent fraternity and chose to appreciate what our purpose really is. One of us detached from us right after we crossed. We have not seen or heard from him since. I am still a very proud member of the Fraternity. Obviously, an old head alumni now. The brand on my arm always reminds of the proud legacy while sometimes creates momentary thoughts of some scary moments. The three of us just recently re-activated on a national level because we all feel, now more than ever, any black organization that exists in this country needs to be at the forefront of change to help protect our culture as a whole against the massive intentional racism prevalent on a daily basis. It's not new for any of us, especially black men, but a dangerous door has been opened by a narcissistic "leader" of our country, and I want to always give my own son and daughter a fighting chance in this world without fear, as well as, protect the heritage of our beautiful culture as whole. I owe this to my deceased father and mother who gave me the hope of a college education and especially the truest of martyr of my family, my 98 year old living grandmother who was born and raised right here in the rural south. This movie will be very interesting to watch now, but I wanted to share my real world pre-1990's line experience. I am a proud member but I would never allow my son to experience anything like I did. Thanks for the review, Frat! 3/9/89, Too Intense

But, instead you turned away because of what you heard. My question to you would be, but do you actually know how it is? Because ppl say alot of things but it doesn't mean its true. Joining an organization has to have a deeper meaning to you for wanting to join. You must had not wanted to be a Kappa because you so easily turned away from it mainly off of something that you heard and could possibly not be true. I am a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. And if you still have the desire to be a Kappa man, really do your research on the fraternity and seek membership.

But like I said take some time to do your own research my g. It might change your perspective on the matter.

Pretty good review. The director is actually my line brother. I think his message rings the same as the message in Spike Lee's School Daze - essentially to WAKE UP! The main perspective was from "a pledgee view" so some of your dislike is from a fellow Greek view. If you actually went back to put yourself in the shoes of "wanting to be down" you'd probably like and relate to more of those parts. Also this film is fiction and isn't a depiction of Black Greeks. It's focus is pledging, but encompasses research from ANY ORGANIZATIONS that a student is able to pledge - ranging from NPHC, to the Band, to Military frats and so on. If someone is scared away from being Greek after seeing this movie, they probably shouldn't Join in the first place

This movie was tragic, but factual. I attended Two HBCU’s and I’ve seen AND heard the horror stories about physical and sexual abuse, humiliation, financial misconduct, mental torture, criminal initiation, drug use, and worse. I hope this movie causes the national chapters of the entire Divine 9 to launch a vicious collective investigation into All activities and practices. Also, Zurich was probably feeling that he had to cross in order to be in a position to change things.

I think a big reason why people join a fraternity / sorority is because it will give you opportunity when you're out. You don't agree morally of what is going on, but it is the only way to get out ahead. I think this has also definitely played a part for Zurich, as he wanted to get into medicine so badly.

Greetings Frat 🤙🏾! I appreciate your review of this movie which I saw when it first came out. Your review has motivated me to see it again and watch for some of the things you speak on.
I think you wrap your review up nicely when you said “Anything worth having is worth working hard for”.
Allow me a moment to tell mine...
I pledged during the summer of 1977 at Northwestern (Alpha Mu). I was commuting from the campus to my Aunt and Uncle’s (who is also Frat) house in South Chicago (at the time home of the National HQ and “Terrible Theta” Chapter). Brothers from ALL over Illinois were home for the summer so I was running into Big Brothers at every turn...and yes, I was going to summer session classes as well! My pledge period was 12 weeks and needless to say it was a CRAZY 12 weeks! It was a long hard crossing with my three other shipmates (I was the ACE on my line). When we got to our Hell week/night, the Chapter brothers were back and relatively speaking it was a walk in the park compared to what we went thru during that summer. But here I am bathed in Black and Old Gold. Yes, it was a time of discovery for me...a maturing and an annealing of my soul and my spirit.
I said all of this to say that anything worth having is worth working hard for! Pledging is meant to be hard and have many obstacles. It’s meant to show you that you are capable of doing things you never thought you could or would do.
Two things I will leave you with:
“Out of the night that covers me
Black as the pit from pole to pole
I thank whatever Gods may be
    For my unconquerable soul”
    WEH
“IF you can keep your head
When all about you are losing theirs and blaming it on you...”
    RK
    ‘0🤙🏾6
    First of All

The movie is a warning. I was in school before the so-called end to hazing. There were broken legs, trips to the hospital, it was brutal. What Caryen (sp?) says he didn't understand about the film is precisely what the story is trying to convey to the viewers (and doing a good job at it). Will agree that not know your line brothers' given names is pretty odd tho. That aside, people dying during this process is a red flag. The need for the Pan Hellenic Council to publicly institute an end to hazing is a red flag. If you look at all the great leaders in recent history and mostly none are members of a Devine 9 org ...is a red flag. The best and brightest are avoiding these orgs due to the pledge process. There's too many that can take an a** whoopin and give an a** whoopin in these orgs. There like positive gangs nowadays.

Thank you for your review. I am what you would call a GDI- however I was an interest. With that said, I have been around BLOG for some time and have them in my family. The one thing that was always said from friends and family was to do my research. I wanted to carry on a legacy at first. But one of my cousins knew me very well and knew that it wasn't for me. And for a long time I was so offended that she stated that. However knowing what I know now and my journey in what I partook in...she was right. I think that the movie is a good movie but the Hell week and underground pledging process was mortifying to me. And even though it was maybe over the top; as you stated it does happen and has. That is what is not for me. What I wonder and no shade to anyone or disrespect at all; but is that really what your founders wanted? Is that how the unity is supposed to be? That is what blew me away. So at the end of the day I will be a GDI and I am fine with that. I am fine with my Friends and family that took their paths into greekdom. But I want to thank you sir for being honest and having an open mind to the movie.

all of the hazing was to get those on line to reject the abuse and come
together as a line...once that evolution happened, it was straight
BUSINESS after that...get all I's dotted and all T's crossed...the wood
was thrown often and to the point of us refusing to take anymore. Some
brothers at other chapters saw this as an insult to the brotherhood...WE
    didn't give a damn...the hazing was what it was...but the chapter I
pledged aimed to bring in MEN....and if you continued to take the abuse
as a unit....we questioned your intelligence...

Andre Miller That's real shit bro I be telling people if yo line weak that ass get beat lol but really the process is about knowing what is about bringing out your integrity and ultimately standing up as a man despite consequences.

Me Personally , I'm not about to be apart of a club or frat and get beat like a slave by some men that feel good about beating a man helpless so that I can wear some letters and be identified as a Q Dog or Kappa or whatever. I'm just as strong being a man by myself as I would be with them. If I walk in the Lord he will make my name greater than some club with guys that want to feel important. Lol!! I'm sorry. I don't have to be accepted by no one because in acceptable to God. And I don't have to be beat . I'm sorry but being bros with those guys ain't that important . By the way the movie was good , but the ending sucked!

I see comments from Those who didn’t experience this type of of pledging process. Thank god cause y’all must have had good advisors, a chapter with sense, and moral Lb/Ls. I’m a Legacy that purposely didn’t pledge due to hearing from classmates that a certain chapter of a sorority didn’t accept legacies and that if you didn’t get hazed it was just paper. I also attended, but transferred right before A particular Drum major from a Fl institution died from getting hazed ... I could feel the energy of that institution getting dark. hazing or “showing” that you wanted to be a part of any campus group oozed everywhere in my opinion. How tf you have Greek letters and a stroll for a modeling group? How do you have Greek letters for musicals organizations other than the nationally recognized ones?
I come from a noble line of women I know wouldn’t expect or respect me for allowing someone to call themselves my sister and treat me less than. That goes for the band and any other organization. I can show you my worth better than I can tell you and that doesn’t include humiliation and trauma.
I won’t even get started on the slave branding. Yeah even the sororities. Call me wimpy, but please observe the yard and use discernment. There’s grad chapters lol.

Great review. One tiny thing that I think you missed is that the paper Zurich turns in at the end wasn't extra credit. There was another paper due the day he yelled and walked out of his professors class... so he turned in that (second) paper late.

My friends and I weren’t Greek but when it came to the divine 9, they actually were nice to us as we held the campus down with putting together music events and DJing some of their parties...I got approached by an Omega and a Kappa at different occasions to join....I respectfully declined lol

The movie was intended to show the negative sides. It’s based off a real hazing death that happened at Florida A&M University.

Great review! I think it was a pretty good movie! I agree it kinda makes greek life look bad. he probably should of shown the good parts about being greek too. Some of the parts did feel rushed, I really wanted to know more about his relationship with his father.

yeah the ending really caught me off guard, and actually after listening to your review feel a little cheated by the conclusion.
so us as the viewer following their process was in the end a waste.
I feel like this is how a show season finale end.
I know they intentionally meant to have it open ended, but it was void of any redemption opportunity.

As a college kid I've went to Geek week and talked to a frat people they are pretty cool and nice people including the black ones but like you said the hazing is kinda forbidden and they didn't go through that which is good cause before I thought that happens. The movie was good but it showed a dark light more then a bright light the speech was good however I think that it was too harsh for them to change it from the inside at that moment since you see that even the dean was too scared to do anything.

To the Kings statement. His point in emphasizing their being Kings before enduring Hell night was to prepare them for when it was over. He was saying that the treatment they experienced throughout their process ends with them and that once they finish and are officially brothers, they will start anew in terms of making sure that those who pledge after them do not experience the level of disrespect they did, and thus treating them like Kings instead.

  • @Yan_kamil
    @Yan_kamil 6 лет назад +1

The part where the main character discusses him and his line brothers being Kings was basically the main character reflecting upon where they are from and how they should act as Kings ...with that being said the main character was trying to convince the other line brothers that once they are offices members of the Frat they will not follow the lead of the Frat brothers before them by acting violently toward their pledges...instead the main character is basically saying they will not treat pledges disrespectfully because they are kings ...the main character is planning to attempt to make a positive change within the Frat once he and his brothers become official members

I believe that the fraternity and new members was to be the reference to slavery and to its tie in with Fredrick Douglass
how the fraternity members are treated to be horrible (as slaves) and the fraternity is shown to be the upper class.Unlike other fraternity or sorority Zurich was in a toxic environment in this organization, He also find brotherhood between the five of them.
This shows as hierarchy in the fraternity where they enslave their own .If there is no struggle, there is no progress.
To see the identities around these men.

I agree that the cinematography of this film was outstanding, which honestly surprised me ONLY because of how "amateur" and "cheap" the Dvd cover image looked.
I remember seeing the dvd in upcoming movies online and totally dismissed it.
Some time later, I came across the trailer which sold me instantly and to my surprise at the end of trailer (my really moment), I saw the same dvd I previously discounted as "janky" ( years ago I got fooled when I purchase a movie by "big Walter" called Pledge brothers I was going to show during "Alpha Week" as one of the programs), and bro was it terrible!
The "Burning Sands" cover art look just as cheap as the "In the name of Brotherhood" 2000 VHS cover art!!!!
I bet with a better cover image they could have grabbed a bigger reaction or interest from the very beginning. is just cover art wasn't that appealing and didn't give justice to this movie.

After watching the movie . It did shy me away a little but not stop me ... It also let me know how far I'm willing to go when it comes to being hazed if there is any hazing . I have no problem walking off line if I feel like my well being is in danger . And is also no way I can be friends with someone who treated me the way they was treated in the movie. I might have a flashback to when you was beating the crap out of me and spazz out .
