WHOOOOOOO. I felt this, and I deal with it on a regular basis in the profession as well. Like you, I refuse to be anything other than my authentic self. AND THE BLACK PEOPLE HATE IT. Awesome commentary. Our culture needs more of us who are willing to be unapologetically black.

This! All of this! First, YES, please do a video on masking, too many of us are subjected to it in the business world that we have no clue when we’re doing it.
Second, you are so spot on about being our ancestors wildest dreams. I have that conversation so many times, what our ancestors dreamt about was for their children to live free and be exactly who they were born to be, the profession is just the icing on the cake. When I can show up to my corporate job with my NATURAL hair, talking how it’s comfortable for me, and STILL being professional despite people believing I don’t belong in that space…. Yeah I’m winning! Thank you for all you do, keep being unapologetic and making these folks mad!

Thank you for opening this discussion. I have definitely struggled with “respectability politics” from growing up in the “ghetto”. But as I have gotten older I realize the very same thing, the issue lies in still trying to appeal to the White Man. I’m at a point in my life that I just want to be myself and I’m working on creating my own income so that I can have total freedom in doing so. I don’t even work at certain places anymore if I have to change myself too much to be deemed “professional”.

You’re welcome. I believe many of us struggle with it. It’s an unfair and oppressive dynamic

It was about SAFETY. If we could appear less Black then we thought we’d appear less threatening. We just wanted to LIVE without fear of being killed.

I think it also ties into the culture of “Black excellence” yes we can be excellent and it’s powerful and amazing. But the requirement to always be excellent to be respected or treated as human is damaging.
