As a Man, I learned around 40 years ago is that if you, genuinely, laugh in the face of your adversaries you are completely taking the wind out of their sails and there is nowhere for them to go if you laugh even more than they do. They seek, as you know, to embarrass you and can't handle seeing you not affected at all. Quite the opposite in fact. I miss, as a Retired Guy, being out of the loop in the workplace as I was getting increasingly good at switching mid-argument and vehemently and passionately fighting THEIR view against mine like I would say " You are RIGHT, why should YOU have to do, surely I should have done that ?? " :( Causes dis-orientation ..lol
Not to be dismissive...I'm sorry if I sound like that .. but that's not what it is. The show is about how she wears that smug facade and laughs things away as she implodes from within. All the comedy is there to pull us in...to pull us into the tragedy that's festering underneath. But yes the series was definitely empowering ..it makes you feel like you have a friend who 'gets' it. My heart broke during the last scene in the second season when she walked away.
Ehm... Well... It's actually the other way around. She smirks and smiles becouse she used to experience abuse a lot without properly defending herself. Empowering behaviour would be if she dealt with it - calmly calling out the abuser or stoping any communication. But to smile while being attacked is not a healthy behaviour. It's either masohistic OR passive aggresive. (I don't even know which one is her case, probably both at the same time). Which is definetely a sick and perverse reaction.
