I love how this edit showed how much Claire hates the godmother too. I think her distaste is so subtle that you don’t catch it but it was very obvious in this vid how much Claire doesn’t love her and just held her tongue. God I love how this show depicts family dynamics so much.
Yeah I’ve always liked that subtle part. Claire admires Fleabag as much as Fleabag admires Claire because Fleabag is able to be herself and express her feelings in a way that Claire sometimes wishes she had the courage to.
@@Reu8enofleon exactly. The sisters agree in a lot of things, but react/are allowed to react differently. Claire had to continue portraying the poster child, and had to keep up this facade in front of everybody. This is why she is wound up so tight, and envies Fleabag because Fleabag's allowed to be more irreverent and be messy. Fleabag has become everyone's enemy because of how she just freely reacts/acts on things, but admires Claire for having the generally accepted standard of success. She's married, has a great job, and is accomplished - none of which can be said about Fleabag. But they have mutual love, respect and understanding of each other. They were feeling sorry for their dad for being caught up in that relationship, hated their stepmother because she's a c*nt, and were each other's go-to at their lowest points. On the surface, seems like an unlikely pair, but deep inside they are bonded strongly.
I think the only reason Fleabag's father chose to remain with her godmother is because somewhere he knew that she will be loathed by everyone. At one point he admitted in front of Fleabag that he was kinda jealous of her own mother because she was so lively and had fun streak. Since the godmother possessed none of these qualities, he didn't feel like a nobody. Somewhere he didn't like Fleabag because she reminded him of his perky wife. Yeah I love how it starts as a slow burn where when she's first introduced you can kind of fall for her sickly sweetness and then as it goes on you're like Oh. Oh I see. She sucks.
God i wish I could watch this for the first time again. So many moments where I literally jumped off the couch and had to start pacing around the room in excitement (fleabag pushing the godmother was one of them lol)
While watching this show, I couldn’t help but think that Fleabag is a lovable but deeply flawed person who has occasionally been cruel to people like Harry and Boo. We’re seeing the show from Fleabag’s point of view. If we saw Godmother’s backstory and inner life, would she seem as villainous?
I totally agree. Fleabag is a story told completely through her lens. I think if we were to see it through the Godmother’s we’d definitely get a different impression of her.
@@throwawayuser9931 I think it's probably also that she hates herself and she hates godmother. No one is really good or evil, but fleabag, especially at the end of s1, is pretty honest about how sh*t she thinks she is. She's flawed, like most people. I think godmother being so fake, opportunistic & in direct competition & comparison with fleabag's mother is what seals it. Her sister doesn't like her & the father isn't exactly in love with her, he even called her annoying. Godmother swooping in while they're mourning their mother is what makes it so easy to see why she's hated. Fleabag felt a bond to her mother & godmother has actively & boldly tried to take her place.
Absolutely. It’s a case of the unreliable narrator. It’s a one-sided perspective. For example, when we first meet Claire, she describes Claire in an unflattering way “probably anorexic” but that proves not to be true. She also tries to run away from the audience when the truth about Boo’s death is revealed, showing that she was trying to hide that fact from “us.” It makes the story even more interesting to think about the subjective nature of it.
