I work in the waste management industry, I'm an electrician that works on pumps etc. This isn't just a build-up of random discarded waste, this is intentional industrial fly-tipping. If you go up river you will find almost all the waste is coming from 2 or 3 specific areas. Someone is using the river as a dump.

That’s an absolutely insane amount of trash in that river… The population of that country needs to be [censorship] for like 5 years under strict [censorship] wielding “rebels” to punish THAT much trash in a little creek… the freaking excavator was having a hard time keeping up with the flow of new trash while scooping the last bits out… anyone else see that? It literally kept cleaning and more and more and more and more kept piling up… I bet they can just lay that excavator and trucks to show up once an hour and they will get a full truckload… it’s as if this one creek in a decade will produce enough to create 90% of the ocean’s/world’s garbage patch/microplastic/polution problem… if there are multiple creeks or even rivers with this intense of a trash flow then we are truly going to ruin this planet within the next decade beyond repair… trash trucks and excavators won’t save us then. It will be beyond repair for the next 200,000 years or more.

Most Guatemalans live hand to mouth so they don't think about the consequences of their actions. Throwing garbage down a hillside or into a river is free, garbage collection isn't.

When we lived in a small northern California town back in the 80s, a local sawmill was using the Feather River for their own sluice receptacle. How i found out was my kids would play in the river and they told me "stuff" was in the water. I checked it out and took a sample and sent it to the Environmental Quality dept in Sacramento. After the sawmill was investigated they were dumping their millpond water into the river which fed into Lake Almanor; a major source of water for the area. 😮 So the State shut the sawmill down long enough for them to devise a dry-deck, so no more pollution for the river or lake. Also, no more 4-eyed fish.
