A lot of the questionable hair trends such as anti-silicone, protein-overload hysteria etc. came from the curly hair community. My conspiracy theory is that this happened because the mainstream brands and scientific research completely ignored us until recently. We relied on anecdotal experience to figure out what worked and what didn't. It is no co-indigence that that popular curly hair brands such as Shea Moisture or Mielle have a made-in-kitchen feel away . I am starting to see more R&D dollars poured into curly haircare so maybe, we will see the end of these bogus hair trends.

Abbey! I remember telling you that the breakage you had via rice water was not protein overload, but was rice starch buildup on your strands that was making your hair brittle. This is exactly why the original Lao recipe includes the oil resins from specific tree barks and citrus peels to break up the starch molecules in the rice water and why current black naturals add oil to our rice water concoctions AND we also deep condition AFTER our rice water treatments as well.
I'm so happy you realized that protein overload is not a thing. Congratulations on the growth, boo! ❤❤❤ Please do more videos like this.

There are so many people though who's hair gets stiff and breaks using protein heavy products, especially fine/bleached hair. It's s very confusing. Abbey says it means you are not conditioning enough but conditioners for damaged hair have protein in as well and my hair doesn't like it.

    • @bklynbutters13
      @bklynbutters13 Год назад +8

@@natmya243 Protein treatments usually have conditioning agents in them to aide in application, slip, combability, texture, cosmetic elegance, etc but those minimal amounts of conditioning agents aren't moisturizing enough alone when in the presence of a lot of protein. Protein rich masks should always be followed with low to zero protein containing moisturizing conditioners /masks at the very least.
Also, if your hair is not porous (virgin hair, etc), it probably doesn't benefit from protein as much as someone with chemically treated hair. Since protein forms a layer to help fill in the gaps in the hair cuticles, if you don't have many gaps in your hair cuticles to begin with ... you get what I'm saying.
But no, it doesn't "overload" your hair. It just doesn't provide enough hydration or lipid moisturization to the hair, so the hair ends up feeling brittle.
Rice water however isn't a protein issue. It's a starchy carbohydrate issue lol.

@@bklynbutters13 Thanks for explaining. My hair is heavily bleached so it is really damaged but it hates bond products, K18 and olaplex and protein. It's fine but there is loads of it and it's very long.

As someone who is hypothyroid and post meno, AND having JUST watched your video on silicones, I am so happy because I find that Pantene’s Sleek conditioner is the only product that gives me enough “slip” to finger comb my hair.
My hair is like….type 3+(?), and fine, so it knots REALLY EASILY. Like, if I look at it wrong, it knots. Pantene Sleek is such a godsend. And when it’s on one of those BOG1/2Off sales at RiteAid, cue the Snoopy Happy Dance!

There was a time I used to be afraid of everything protein related, but then I started using hydrolysed protein in diy masks and noticed how much bounce & strength my hair had. How come something demonised work so good on my hair I thought 🫣😅These days I look forward to proteins in products and don’t want to miss them at all. I think the damage you experienced may come from the starch in the rice waters. Yao Women traditionally add dried tea (camelia seed) bran which contains natural cleansing agents that I assume will cleanse those residues away while pomelo peels & other natural conditioning agents not displayed to the public are conditioning their hair.

The moisturizing one has to be a very liquidy hair mask... here in Brazil I use Pantene Bamboo.
In the nourishing side, recently I tested Briogeo Avocado and it also worked like a charm. Another one that I loved is Kerastase Oleo Relax.

But even by what you're saying and what she said (I watched the video) protein overload might be an incorrect term, but it's still a case of too much protein vs moisture/conditioning ingredients. So protein moisture imbalance is a much better term, but in the end it's kind of a distinction without much of a difference. People are still experiencing the effects of too much protein. I think saying that protein overload "doesn't exist" is not the best way to address this because it makes it seem like people are imagining the effects of protein being "too much" due to imbalance with conditioning ingredients.

I learned that everyone’s hair texture and scalp is different. It’s matter of trial and error and research to find products that’s a good match for our haircare. I love Pantene and have used it for years. I stopped buying after the hype about how bad Pantene has gotten due to reformulation. I actually love the original Pantene. There’s something truly special about the OG model. The problem with shampoo industry is they keep changing the formula and ruining out hair. Right now I’m using Pure Volume Abundance Aveda shampoo with Scalp solution treatment once a week. So far my hair and scalp is not oily. and then I use Carol’s daughter leave in mask to rinse. No issues whatsoever. Aveda is a little but on the pricy side but that makes my hair happy I’ll stick to that. I need to try the trial size volume Pantene. Thank you Abby and your soft toned blonde hair color looks fabulous on you. Gives you that sunkissed glow

My hair HATES, HATES, HATES protein ... period !
I have virgin hair ( no color / bleach on it ) the same length as yours ... so my have is natural and long.
I use shampoo and conditioner in the shower and when I get out I have no trouble using a wide tooth comb to comb through my hair... no tangles at all. Once I comb through I add a leave-in product just for conditioning purpose only... it's not necessary for me to use it for the purpose of combing through tangles, I don't have any.
Every time I have ever used any hair products that contains any form of protein my hair was stiff, hard and dry... every time !
I've never said my hair had "protein over load"... but I have and do say my hair does not like having protein applied to it .
Now the reason for my hair not liking protein... I don't know ? But my hair is not in a damaged state and saying it is not properly conditioned is the reason for my hair responding negatively to protein... well, that just does not seem correct.
You will have to give a better explanation then I just need to have better conditioned hair in order to use protein... what does that even mean ? And how do you archive that ? This information was missing for your video.
Just giving my personal experience with using protein on my hair... clearly not scientifically proven but however this is in fact my experience. 🥰

I have the same comment and opinion. Abby is taking ONE person's opinion and applying it as fact. Go with experience. People need to get careful with protein. Protein heavy products will dry out your hair and if it's not damaged you do NOT need it.

I’ve read a couple articles saying that coconut oil is bad for damaged hair- something about it getting into the cuticle and not allowing other good nutrients to be absorbed??? Not really sure what’s going on there but coconut oil is in a ton of hair products so if it IS actually bad then that’s going to suck 😂 I’d love to hear your thoughts on this! Thank you! 🥰❤️

I think pantene is one of the best drugstore shampoos out there, even over professional. And ive used a ton of professional shampoos $30 -40 a bottle. To me they still were drying for my hair. And as for clarifying shampoo, unless you have oily hair, I don't think people need to use a clarifying shampoo every week, maybe once every month.

My old hairstylist tried to be gentle, but she always used this fine tooth comb to comb out my hair after washing it without any leave in conditioner to help give it slip. I have very fine, very dense wavy/curly blonde hair, so it took absolutely forever and ended up being more rough on my hair than necessary. I wanted to be like GIRL just give me like 30 secs with some leave in and a tangle teezer

She is taking one person's expert opinion. Another expert could have a different opinion. Also many people will tell you when they use protein heavy products makes their hair dry. When your hair is dry it is brittle. So I still believe people need to be careful with protein products and balance that with moisture

I had hair to the middle of my back and had been in menopause for 6 years already with no issues until doing what the internet said to do now its unfortunately to my collarbone due to having to cut it, so my advice is if it works don't mess with it hashtag wet hair don't care!!!!!
