Having nerded out at conventions for 25 years, I can still say that out of all the actors I've met, Paul McGann is by far the nicest, funniest and most engaging. He spent around ten minutes reading scenes from the Withnail script book (doing all the voices) and had some great anecdotes. A real gentleman.
My mum, a wise woman, took me to see the movie in Australia when it came out, her shout, at The Academy Twin, Paddington. I was living a somewhat debauched lifestyle, in shared digs with my mates. Now I look back, I think she was trying to inspire me, bless her heart. We both laughed like fools.
Ralph, genuinely you stole every scene you were in, be proud of your performance and nobody in withnail was below excellent and you just nailed it ( pun not intended)
This has been my favourite film since I first saw it in 1990 with my mate's stoner parents (they microwaved some home-grown buds for the official viewing). I found Ralph's comments about his performance really sad. If I was in that audience, I would have stood up and said that each and every actor in Withnail were absolutely brilliant, but your perfromance, Ralph, was truly joyous. I agree with Phill that this is the best British film ever made, and I think Ralph's is the most memorable performance in any British film. It is a treasure.
@@David-j9h9g I'm with you mate. Lawrence of Arabia is brilliant. I guess it's an apples and oranges thing. They are so different. My argument would be that I don't watch 'Lawrence' every year or quote all the lines in my everyday interactions! Withnail is just so unique. The script is so funny... It's those wonderful words that wins it for me.
I had a weird day, was watching Sharpe and looked up Wikipedia for one of the actors and it said Paul McGann was cast as Sharpe but buggered his knee playing football, so Sean Bean took over the role (and did a phenomenal job). I knew Paul from Hornblower, and I never realised he was "&I". I always loved Withnail & I, so I watched it again tonight. What a brilliant character movie it is, full of drama, humour, subtly and serious message. In this modern age of explosions and constant action, we really need more movies like this. Low budget but great story and performance, making subtle commentary on the times we live in.
If anyone gets the chance, track down a film called Paper Mask - a great little picture starring Paul McGann from the late 80’s. As an added brucie bonus, he even plays the banjo in it.
I’m from Liverpool and worked in London as a carpenter in the 80s . I saw the movie on the newly refurbished Electric ballroom in portobello rd …Re:Arthur Lowe The bed sitting room …
The wrecking ball scene is actually the demolition of the people’s republic of frestonia squats on Bramley road, near Latimer Road. (The jag drives off through the arched bridge 100yds down from frestonia) The people who lived there were very much like the characters of Withnail and I, All old hippies and artists from the 60’s & 70’s.
When Paul says he thinks it still stands up today, I, at 31 just recently watched it for the first time, and have since watched it multiple times and am obsessed by it. At the risk of sounding trite or like Jupitus; it's a modern classic.
Its a shame there was a cut at 36:46 because I bet there was going to be an interesing story or two there. Interesting to listen to them all ten years later, 40 years after the film.
Sterling Hayden in The Long Goodbye (1973) Richard E Grant in Withnail & I (1986) Nichols Cage in Leaving Las Vegas (1995) - Three GREAT eloquent movie drunks!
REG also in person wuda truly made this unmissable, but cn Ralph Brown still made it delightful - I'm not sure whether I prefer his Withnail turn, or his part in *The Crying Game* - but it's real close either way.
According to Bruce Danny's voice came from a slightly dim make up artist that Bruce knew. It's in his 1999 (?) interview on the DVD extras. "Do you understand?" Etc,. Ralph is much too hard on himself. He was " marvellous" in it.
Yes. In Brum. It's not the film. It's a different experience but overall a good one. I'm not sure the actor who played Withnail quite pulled it off but the actor who played Uncle Monty was astounding. He played it slightly differently but it worked. I was left feeling like I'd seen a good new production of Hamlet. If it's good you see new depth to some thing you're familiar with and I was fine with that.
I'm sorry Ralph , I will have to disagree with you on your performance . I have been quoting Danny since i Have seen the film. You were superb , i hope you were just having a bad day and you have grown to appreciate your performance more.
Paul McGann could not let anyone else speak for longer than a minute without taking over. I would liked to have heard more musings from Ralph Brown but he was continually interrupted.
i don't think Paul McGann and Richard E Grant got on well in real life or are friends unlike Ralph Brown although he does compliment his acting. I've met Paul McGann once who was down to earth and I've crossed paths with Richard E Grant in real life recently and find him very much into himself and arrogant. I think Ralph Brown had to be convinced to come, tell's me how mean a person Bruce Robinson is. Talented writer-director, but from what I have heard, not a very nice person, which is a shame.
I agree about jupitus, idiot. Withnail is not only the greatest British film ever but the best film ever, period. And there's been some brilliant British films. I've seen it nearly 170 times since the 90s. God bless all involved

A joyous hour+. Many thanks.
This was great. Time for me to watch the film again, I think.

great film..fav of mine..but it doesnt come close to Lawrence of Arabia..watch it dude...
Agreed. Ralph’s performance nailed my past encounters completely.

Legendary, first saw it in the Notting Hill cinema 1988, loved it ever since.
Danny you Leg End
I met Bruce Robinson down in Hay -- he's a good guy! :0)

Fitting since Sgt Harper from Sharpe also played pub Irishman in Withnail....
Well that was enjoyable. Both so eloquent and evocative.
Can't believe that no one mentioned Ralph's appearance in Waynes World 2

Some fascinating insights from the guys, two splendid British actors, thanks for sharing this.

Let's not forget about How To Get Ahead In Advertising. Also with two richards.
This was fascinating. Really loved the conversation and learnt a lot. I feel sorry that Ralph didn't enjoy the film although loved his input.
paul left his wife for a welsh actress. his career went down after that. circa 1986. who remembers the monocled mutineer

I'm sure there was! ;)
We are restricted by the regulations of RUclips, unfortunately… apologies
My thoughts entirely.

Thanks for the fantastic footage and explaining the brutal edit right at the 'best' bit 😂😂😂
Urghhh, the never-ending ridiculous RUclips regulations😢

I'll just say.. you should read Bruce Robinson's book about the jack the ripper.. he spent 15 years and his own money.. it's astounding!
I love these Proustian conversations.
I think it is actually quite beautiful that 'Danny' doesn't actually remember anything about it!
😂❤️🇬🇧
Now we know why Phil Jupitus doesn't work. God bless. Great man.
Hair are your awials.
Excellent.
Interesting now they have done a stage production with Bruce involved and it was brilliant
I still have the occasional Camberwell Carrot 😎
Nice, I was in the audience and had a couple of pairs of pints leading up to it. I ended up asking one of the questions... I think I managed it.
How old is this talk?
@marccas10 10 years ago now I think
Do you have any recollection of the story that was cut out
44:45 - Is.... is that Bruce?
It does look like him. :0)
I'd love to know if so, and if they know he's there, it feels like they don't. Wouldn't you love to be a fly on the wall when they spot him afterwards

"Matter?!?"
Sorry to be one of those people who quotes this amazing movie, but "Stick it in the soap tray and save it for later" always kills me.
Je suis Withnail. It's not about gay actors, it's about the dream of times past and the expectant jump of the heart as the sun rises.
You want working on boy!
Does anyone know who turned down the Marwood role then ?
Kenneth Branagh
makes sense, he allegedly likes a saveloy
Anyone seen the play…..?

Phil Jupitus will never play…..the Dane.
McGann is 65?!
He is now. This was recorded over a decade ago.
@Sheriff_GrimLaw Ah, that explains it.

Fabulous watch. I just wish the audience had been a bit more ebullient and interactive.

What is the point of Phil Jupitus?
He's a really annoying guy, always mugging for a laugh that never comes.
Interrupting the guests just to make some smart @rse comment, what an amateur.
@@yellowjackboots2624 He quit comedy in 2017 to become a cartoonist. Very shit comedian.

Except, he's not reeally throwing any stones...

Cant stand Jupitus, seen him a few times in Edinburgh trying to act the hard man and staring at people lol

why is this so fkn quiet????
