    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
    Charlie (Tom Cruise) says an emotional goodbye to his brother before Ray (Dustin Hoffman) boards a train back to Cinncinati.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
    Self-centered, avaricious Californian Charlie Babbitt (Tom Cruise) is informed that his long-estranged father has died. Expecting at least a portion of the elder Babbitt's $3 million estate, Charlie learns that all he's inherited is his dad's prize roses and a 1949 Buick Roadmaster. Discovering that the $3 million is being held in trust for an unidentified party, Charlie heads to his home town of Cincinnati to ascertain who that party is. It turns out that the beneficiary is Raymond Babbitt (Dustin Hoffman), the autistic-savant older brother that Charlie never knew he had. Able to memorize reams of trivia and add, subtract, multiply, and divide without a second's hesitation, Raymond is otherwise incapable of functioning as a normal human being. Aghast that Raymond is to receive his father's entire legacy, Charlie tries to cut a deal with Raymond's guardian. When this fails, Charlie "borrows" Raymond from the institution where he lives, hoping to use his brother as leverage to claim half the fortune. During their subsequent cross-country odyssey, Charlie is forced to accommodate Raymond's various autistic idiosyncracies, not the least of which is his insistence on adhering to a rigid daily schedule: he must, for example, watch People's Court and Jeopardy every day at the same time, no matter what. On hitting Las Vegas, Charlie hopes to harness Raymond's finely-honed mathematical skills to win big at the gaming tables; but this exploitation of his brother's affliction compels Charlie to reassess his own values, or lack thereof. A longtime pet project of star Dustin Hoffman, Rain Man was turned down by several high-profile directors before Barry Levinson took on the challenge of bringing Ronald Bass' screenplay to fruition (Levinson also appears in the film as a psychiatrist). All three men won Oscars, and the movie won Best Picture.

    "Ill see you soon". Listen carefully to Charlies voice breaking. You can tell the character wants to cry but does his best to hide it.

    “Kmart sucks” - a line that disproves the common interpretation of the story that Raymond never learned or changed at all. He may not fully comprehend what it means but it’s something his brother said and he remembers it and repeats it because he loves his brother. And he does like his new clothes and understands now that he doesn’t have to always wear Kmart clothes to be comfortable.

    During that awkward silence at 1:28, I think Charlie wants to tell Raymond "I love you," but thinks Raymond may not understand what this means. So he simply says "I'll see you soon." Course, that's just my opinion...

      I read a theory that Charlie probably wouldn't come back to see him. I don't believe that for a second, considering his whole attitude about life changed.
      It's also made very clear that he's comfortable with flying so it's not like he's gonna have a tough time getting there.
      I may be off on this but I don't think there was any animosity between Charlie and Bruner in this scene so I don't think he'd stand in the way if Charlie wanted to help manage Raymond's affairs.
      He no longer wants Raymond's money. I don't think he was holding out for more when he slapped the check back in Bruner's hands, I think that was him understanding he couldn't take it because Ray is gonna need it.
      But anyway, I do think the relationship continued. Bruner let them have a private goodbye on the platform, he doesn't seem like he's gonna stand in the way.

      @@88mphsss It's very clear that Charlie wanted to spend more time w/ Raymond. Hence, whoever wrote that theory is just ignoring the story.

    No such thing as portable TVs anymore. Apparently with digital broadcasts there's no reliable way to handle a signal while the receiver is moving. With all the advances in technology, that's one regression. And NO I'm not talking about wireless internet.

    Did Charlie ever get any of the money?

    • @DrLove0378
      @DrLove0378 Год назад +7

      No. Dr. Bruner offered him $250,000 to walk away, but he turned it down, because he wanted a relationship with Raymond.
      In the beginning, Charlie is angry because he was left out of his father’s will (save for the Buick and the prize rosebushes), and will stop at nothing to get what he believes he is entitled to.
      But he eventually realizes what is important, and laments “Why didn’t anybody EVER tell me that I had a brother? Because it would’ve been nice to know him for more than just the past six days.” And with that, he places the $250K check back in Bruner’s hands.
