CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Ray (Dustin Hoffman) has an attack in the airport when Charlie (Tom Cruise) tries to force him on an airplane.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Self-centered, avaricious Californian Charlie Babbitt (Tom Cruise) is informed that his long-estranged father has died. Expecting at least a portion of the elder Babbitt's $3 million estate, Charlie learns that all he's inherited is his dad's prize roses and a 1949 Buick Roadmaster. Discovering that the $3 million is being held in trust for an unidentified party, Charlie heads to his home town of Cincinnati to ascertain who that party is. It turns out that the beneficiary is Raymond Babbitt (Dustin Hoffman), the autistic-savant older brother that Charlie never knew he had. Able to memorize reams of trivia and add, subtract, multiply, and divide without a second's hesitation, Raymond is otherwise incapable of functioning as a normal human being. Aghast that Raymond is to receive his father's entire legacy, Charlie tries to cut a deal with Raymond's guardian. When this fails, Charlie "borrows" Raymond from the institution where he lives, hoping to use his brother as leverage to claim half the fortune. During their subsequent cross-country odyssey, Charlie is forced to accommodate Raymond's various autistic idiosyncracies, not the least of which is his insistence on adhering to a rigid daily schedule: he must, for example, watch People's Court and Jeopardy every day at the same time, no matter what. On hitting Las Vegas, Charlie hopes to harness Raymond's finely-honed mathematical skills to win big at the gaming tables; but this exploitation of his brother's affliction compels Charlie to reassess his own values, or lack thereof. A longtime pet project of star Dustin Hoffman, Rain Man was turned down by several high-profile directors before Barry Levinson took on the challenge of bringing Ronald Bass' screenplay to fruition (Levinson also appears in the film as a psychiatrist). All three men won Oscars, and the movie won Best Picture.

Every airline except Qantas deleted this scene when showing the movie on board.
tedmerr that’s only half true, AA, continental, and Delta featured edited versions with their company name edited out, but the rival companies crash dates are still in.
that's hilarious
Sponsored by Qantas Airlines.

This iconic line has aged so well. It's February 2024, and Qantas has still never crashed.
Dustin Hoffman absolutely nailed the role, and definitely deserved that Oscar.
Cruise should have won Best Supporting Actor too.
Yeah, he was really good, too. Shame he didn’t receive an Oscar nomination.
As an actor, how did Dustin Hoffman act like an autistic character? I mean look at him playing the role of Ray.
Lance Plaxton Dustin won the Oscar in 1989 ceremony for his character! If you watch the moment when he's get the award during speech, he was still in character ! xD
Phenominal communication. "This is very serious Ray" Charlie talking about his business. "Yeah very serious." Raymond talking about the danger of flying.
hahahshaha
@@bagelfish8916 If they're killed in a plane crash, then Charlie won't be doing any more for his business so that won't even matter.
Thank you, that's a lecture of that dialogues that didn't occur to me. I thought he was just repeating what Charlie says, like when he says "bet your butt" in the restaurant.
“Uh oh! Uh oh! Cause there’s a airplane out there”
😂😂Dustin Hoffman was superb in this
Course*
I would be very grateful to anyone who can tell me the bag Tom cruise uses in this scene
I like the way Tom Cruise's character calms him down
The part where Dustin Hoffman "Screamed" really scared the daylights out of me. Charlie has no "Patience" with Raymond. At this time he doesn't even care about Raymond all he cares about is The Money. He doesn't even realize how challenging it was for his Father to have a Child who has developmental issues and there's no help for him at least at that time.
that's the point of the movie. he's a yuppie who has to learn tolerance
@@apseudonym he didn't believe that Raymond's (so-called as Charlie calls it) autism was real. There's the part in the movie after Raymond goes on and on about the boxer shorts at Kmart where Charlie says "I can't believe that there's no one in there who understands what I'm saying". To someone who doesn't understand autism, it looks like Raymond purposely blows off whatever Charlie tells him and only says what he wants to say.
He was self centered & obnoxious & as the character later admitted deserved to be cut outta the will..
I was young when and first seen this movie and laughing at the part when he was screaming but the adult me see him screaming and like wow this isn't funny it's a serious condition
@@apseudonymand empathy
I felt his pain when he screamed like that. I am on the autism spectrum myself so I totally understand

No you are not. When people say they are on the spectrum, it means they got raised poorly and that's the excuse the parent made up.

I read somewhere that usually all airlines ban this film from their entertainment for this very scene: they didn’t want the passengers to feel uneasy about airplanes crashing and being unsafe. Because of the competition regarding air travel, the only airline that did not ban this film was, of course, Qantas.
This is perfect dark humor you can’t even write. 🤣👌
They only cut this scene out, which doesn't make any sense because without it there is no reason for them to drive across country
“You tire me ray”
“Yeah”
1:58, The fear and the sadness, anxiety, upset!!!!!!!!!!!! 😭😭😭
So hard to watch autistic people being sensitive to certain things. I know we all have fears of flying or certain things but still
I was young when I first seen this movie and laughing at the part when he was screaming but the adult me seeing this condition realize how serious it is.
"Qantas doesn't fly to LA out of Cincinati, you'd have to get to Melbourne!" I don't know why I think that's the funniest quote in the movie.
"Squeezed & pulled & hurt my neck in 1988" was pretty funny also. 😂
1:58 That's a depressingly familiar scenario for me.
For me also, my big brother is mentally disable
Mine too, bro. :/
Because I have autism like Raymond, that part makes me nauseous and gives me bad flashbacks about me throwing my childhood tantrums.
@@discoweasel1977 same I even used to hit myself on head just like Raymond did when I was having panic attacks
My younger brother as well. I love him but I do know what Tom cruise’s character went through. It isn’t easy but you do appreciate many things even though it might not seem so.
This was actually filmed at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport and the murals that are featured before this scene are still present in the airport to this day. This is my hometown and I was born in March 1988. One of my favorite movies. Also fun fact, around this time is when Delta started their hub operation in Cincinnati, which would become the 2nd largest hub for the airline, up until the mid 2000s.
"You tire me Ray"
_"Yeah"_
He watched final destination too much
TheGarfieldxx30000 mhmm

TheGarfieldxx30000 This was made in 1988. Final Destination wasn’t made yet.
TheGarfieldxx30000 So what! This plane have been crash for one time in the movie, not all planes in this earth. Remember planes are safe👍🏽
Just because a plane accident recently happened or you saw plane crashes in a movie does not mean it will happen to you besides it won’t be the same plane from the horrific accident. Flying will always be safe and plane crashes and accidents can be VERY rare! Lot of planes are different it’s not always the same plane.
This was in the days when we Aussies were proud of QANTAS. The days when ex military pilots were our Captains and First Officers. We always knew we were in safe hands.
That's our little secret....The Royal Australian Air force trained our pilots, and we are proud of them.
The cinemas roared over here when this part was screened.
Oh, how times have changed......
Changed how?

YEAh.
My aunt is also afraid of flying, but she never freaks out at the airport like Ray does. But she also fears of crashing when she's on the plane, and my mom has to sit next to her to comfort her.
@@arcplays1683 I know that. And so do I.
Same here like i do still have a fear of crashing myself when i get on the plane.

Just perfect - brilliant acting and very moving Brian
"I certainly hope this little incident hasn't put you off flying. Statistically speaking, it's still the safest way to travel." -Superman, 1978
I have autism and I flew for the first time last year. I'm 24 years old now.
Yeah but I can also put out there are more drivers on roads than planes in the sky so put the math together if there are 75 million half of the number of cars on the road or even 25 million you would see those numbers jump higher than the least safe way to travel on a motorcycle.
At 1:58, maybe Rainman does not want to fly on United Airlines.
Doesn't want to be overbooked
It felt to him like the Brother these thing, wanted to drag him to Death
I just flew from Melbourne to LA on Qantas! I looked for this movie on the in-flight entertainment, and couldn't find it.
I would have loved to seen Charlie's reaction when he realized that he could have just used Amtrak.
Me too, I thought that they could have traveled by train instead xD
He would've loved the train!
Faster too. It's a two-day and some change trip.
Out of many stressors for people on the autism spectrum, it’s air travel. Ironically, I find the film Rain Man hilarious at times, while I sympathize for other people on the spectrum. I myself am on the spectrum.
So am I and I have always found it interesting that air travel never has bothered me.
Air travel is fine it just depends who I’m seated near if it’s kids or babies it’s hell and I have to put my noise cancelling headphones on or I’ll lose my temper
yeah i am terrified of air travel
Ray is driving me crazy.. But he's still so god damn funny:-) 😂😂😂
Tom Cruise used to be beautiful. He's still amazing, but back then, beautiful. His looks made people forget how good an actor he was. People watch Dustin Hoffman in this scene and movie, but Tom Cruise's acting is top shelf, in the supporting role.
👍
Great scene! I have no fear of flying nor heights. I have never been afraid of flying, even with turbulence. It never scares me, others pray & seem distressed but I just smile & giggle to myself. Fun fact no one asked for, haha! 😊
You're so special.....
Rain Man: "we'll have to get to Melbourne Australia"
Me: Hay that's were I live :D
Charlie knows that he cannot make Raymond take the plane if he doesn't want to. Consequently, they have to use another manner of transport. The same thing happened in "Midnight Run".
Another fun fact it's both films were released the same year
According to Wikipedia it's true that Qantas has neither lost a jet airliner nor had any jet fatalities, but it had 8 fatal accidents and an aircraft shot down between 1927 and 1945, with the loss of 63 people. Half of these accidents and the shoot-down occurred during World War II, when the Qantas aircraft were operating on behalf of Allied military forces. Post-war, it lost another four aircraft with a total of 21 people killed. The last fatal accidents suffered by Qantas were in 1951, with three fatal crashes in 5 months. Qantas' safety record in the jet airliner era was cited as a reason for it being named as the world's safest airline in 2014 and 2015.
@1:56 When your older sibling tries to force you to ride the scariest roller coaster at the amusement park
"You tire me Ray" "...yeah"
Off the topic, but I like Tom Cruise's hairstyle. I wish I could style mine like that.
The people in American, Delta & Continental must have been pissed. Qantas folks though were incredibly happy, they gave the producers First Class tickets to Tahiti.
tiadaid imagine if it crashed
Plot Twist :
The plane that Charlie was about to catch had crashed a few hours later.
That would’ve been unexpected, but I wonder if it was put in how it would go.
Wow those old CRT monitors in green text. It is somewhat nostalgic...am I right?
I feel Raymond’s pain, although I get nervous & don’t scream
And to think that I’m travelling to Calgary in 2 weeks.
I'm the one that started writing these little comments on rain man. I do have little fits sometimes when things don't go the way I want them to. The only excuse I have for that is because I have compulsive depression disorder and I'm a very impatient person, but I'm trying to work on that. My grandfather worked with me just the way Charlie works with Raymond except a little more patient. My husband also works with me period his name is Sam Slanker. Sometimes I ask them how they put up with me and they won't answer me they just tell me it's because they love me. I'm very fortunate to have them in my life and my daughter too
1:58 when you stand on a Lego brick
I'm an aviation enthusiast and I find this satisfying
Me too and it's true Qantas never crashed
This was the second movie of 1988 to have dialogue about plane crashes, resulting in one of the characters freaking out and resulting in road travel. The other film was "Midnight Run".
I fly NY to Chicago via Sydney because of this clip
Is is bad that I laughed hysterically when he started screaming? I dont know why I can't help it, it just is so loud and sudden its hilarious.
"Uhh-ohh"! Man Raymond was like an FAA expert there. Maybe they should hire him as a manager of airline safety.
"Yeah"
He's got Jeopardy! at 5 o'clock
1:58 Onision after his patreon got deleted
I became very aware at a young age. And when people acted like Charlie, I understood. But it made me feel so guilty all the time. I learned as a kid to hide it. I thought it would help; to blend. I’m think I’m having a break now..
Qantas also flies to LA from Sydney and Brisbane 😎 There's also a Qantas flight from JFK to through LAX continuing on to SYD, BNE and MEL, but you have to buy a ticket all the way to Australia to get on it as it's not available to domestic travelers. It would have been a shorter drive to NYC. I'm not sure they had it in 1988 though...
1:58 It's 2016. You paid 60 dollars for No Man's Sky. You play it for a while, then the cruel reality sets in.
Did Qantas pay for that commercial?
Rainman is right.

To this day Qantas Airlines haven't crash, amazing
211 fatalities on air travel in 1987... compared to 46,000 on the road. Would his mind have been changed if he were told that?
Oh damn, it’ll be a pain to get him in a car
Tom Cruise must have also done previous research since he seemed to know Qantas only flies to LA via Melbourne.
I’ve always been afraid of flying so I always take Qantas
I bet Ray would be watching Sully.
LMFAO:P when he said- Uh-Ho :P lol😂😂😂😂
I think everyone who boards a plane thinks about it and then convinces themselves it wont happen.
1:58 is when you eat a sharp dorito sideways.
Charlie makes a thing in the movie about what an ordeal Raymond is to deal with. I was always wanting to tell Charlie, “Maybe that’s why he was locked up…”
In a sick twisted way...Rain Man makes me wish TSA existed back then (& was depicted in the film). I mean...could you imagine what those bozos would do to poor Raymond? 😂
He is right. Airline travel is very dangerous.
I went airline travel 16 times. it still be safe
No flying
You tire me Ray Yeaaaaah
He really reminds me of that guy from the cube. That guy could do math equations like instantly.
Kazan, I loved him, he was so smart.
This movie did a great job, with its cinematography and soundscape, of portraying how intensely an autistic person experiences the world around them.
Charlie could've just tricked Raymond to get on the plane because its "Qantas airlines" lol
Raymond would've seen the airline of plane from the window at the gate, or would've seen the airline name on the flight attendants' uniforms, walls, the safety guide in the seat pouch, or he would've asked the flight attendant what airline they were on. Charlie knew not to drag him on lying about what airline it was because if he found out on the plane and started screaming there, that would've been even worse than screaming in the airport.
@@alvexok5523 plane would have had to return to the airport.
Can't wait fly my first flight
Qantas...
Question, is this scene filmed in the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport? That's just my guess though.
Yeah pick another airline😂
Funny Ray see's an airplane and he is frightened and Charlie doesn't understand this and he is getting frusterated with Ray and Ray starts screaming. People don't understand people like that and this is an example of why people stare or get scared when they don't understand someone with autism or something wrong with their brain! I hate flying too!
oh no
Tengo que dejar la mesa si dejar la mesa
Plot twist: the QANTAS CVG-MEL flight crashes
It’s kinda genius that Rainman said 135 people died on Delta 191. Technically 137 people died, but two people died a month later from their injuries. Raymond only counts who died on impact. Genius level writing.
Hoffman did not want the role before the production of the movie.
1:40 I'm supposed to believe that Tom Cruise's character knew Quanta's flights off the top of his head.
He's actually incorrect, because Qantas didn't/doesn't fly out of Cincinnati. That said, Qantas is a traditional hub-and-spoke airline; basically all of their flights go via their Australian hubs. So it would have been reasonable to assume Los Angeles to Cincinnati would have involved a stopover in Melbourne.
@@halfaworldaway Tom Cruise's character must be a savant himself to have random flight schedules in his head that can be recalled at a moment's notice.
@@plowe6751But when does he do that? He's only needing to surmise that all Qantas flights go via Australia.
If they had indeed board the plane, how would Charlie bring Los Angeles his new inherited car?
They will cancel flights if the plane was having problems or the weather is bad he does not know flying is still safe.
1:42 MEL-BURN NOT MEL-BORN omg
Mel-born is the American English pronunciation based on "Melbourne, Florida".
Nothing wrong with that. It's the correct way to say it in American English.
I've shifted back and forth like that, but only when extremely stressed. I've never quite spouted out random facts, but I have desperately wanted people to ask me questions so I could. Unfortunately, the average person is very unlikely to randomly ask questions about Rachmaninoff. I don't think I've ever screamed like that, but someone attempting to drag me into a strip club would probably do the trick.
haha the strip club thing for me to
1:58 when you stub your toe on the table leg

I don't have a fear of flying but when I'm aboard a flight and just taken off, I feel this slight anxiety of having just left a country. Otherwise, I feel fine flying. 😊
I think they should have just gone with Qantas
Then there would be no movie. And Charlie would lost his car shop, since he was only able to pay his debits due to Raymond's earnings in the cassino.
That's actually a reason to avoid Qantas. In 1988 if they had a perfect record that means they were due.
Um 2018 and still not had one, so wrong...

that's what I was thinking the odds were not in their favour
@@Drcrazy93 thank you, I was hoping someone would mention the gamblers fallacy.
