I am reading the book Quartet by Leah Broad ( about 4 women composers , among them Rebecca Clarke). So I checked RUclips, to find her Sonata is still played. Great! I love the book by the way, greatly recommended.
I'm hearing this piece for the first time... it takes years sometimes. Beautiful performance, wonderful sonata. Redpath Hall can't have the best acoustics, but they've done a great job on this recording. I enjoyed it more than Gerard Causse's performance
A stunning performance by both soloist and pianist. (It takes two to make this wonderful music come alive. I must admit to not knowing about this composer. What a discovery for me. Thanks so much for posting.
Michael Conway Baker Thank you for your kind words. The piano part is indeed substantial and SO well played by Marie-Ève, who deserves all the credit in the world! A sonata is equal partnership between instruments, but the piano part is always more dense! 😆
Very nice! I have this piece already in a playlist on my channel, with Richard O'Neill and Jeremy Denk, the two of you play it quite differently. I liked it.
Magnifique ! Et joué avec toute la grâce et la nuance qu'il faut pour nous faire découvrir la beauté de cette oeuvre d'une anglaise jusqu'alors inconnue pour moi. À écouter religieusement, superbe ! Bravo !
What a wonderful performance of one of my favourite pieces! You draw such a range of different colours from the viola; have fantastic projection; superb intonation; a deep understanding of the composer's intentions; and the musicality to draw all of these attributes together. I am very impressed. Your pianist is wonderful too. Congratulations to you both. Althea Talbot-Howard, Composer & Performer, London
Music Discovery London Thank you for your kind words! Marie-Eve and I were fortunate to record this piece as part of my second album, dedicated to all women composers. It’s called ELLES under the ATMA classique label, available on all streaming platforms! X
A beautiful piece ...i always found it very interesting to listen to .... Should be more played !! Very beautiful sound of the viola....very good also the pianist..
my mother played the viola in the orchestra of the Capitole in Toulouse in South of France. During an accident by car she lost the flexibily of the first finger of the hand, the most important hand....only this...that was terrible for her....she always said that her profession was as to be in a bath of honey..... poor... after that she dedicates herself by teaching and i remember one of these students; a young girl very apreciate by my mother. Her parents were rather poor. When she won a competition to enter as professional in a theatre in east France my mother offered to her her own beautiful intrument as a gift for her future career. I found always it was a very good destination......i myself played violin but even if i had some gift i didn't like really violin, so it was difficult for me to study as necessary !! i still remember my mother playing at home; sometimes with a quartet of collegues.....the sound of viola is very familiar to me... good luck to you for every wishes you can have and your young pianist friend too; and sorry please my broken english -:(
Haha, most of them are fingerings which were advice by my former teachers, André Roy (McGill) and Michael Tree (Curtis)! And yes, you may share of course!
Amazing as usually! I have always enjoyed your performance that you uploaded like 7 years ago if I'm not mistaken, but now I like this one even more! ;) Which strings do you use?
Not sure why you think there are no recordings available??? It is played on cello or viola - I have 4 recordings on cello and there are a lot more on viola. Try Amazon - a quick check turned up multiple recordings on viola on the first page of results. One of my favourite sonatas.
Merci! :)
The viola is such an underrated instrument that deserves to be recognized more. This young lady certainly plays and interprets it so well.
Thank you so much! Go viola go!!

Another wonderful viola piece that deserves to be heard more. Thanks for this performance.
Completely agreed! Look out for a recording of this piece on my second album, to be recorded in April!
I'm looking forward to the album!!
You played so amazing, I love it so much.
one of not just my favorite viola pieces, but one of my favorite pieces of all time, and an outstanding rendition at that
Excellent. I use this video to present Rebecca Clarke in my Music History class. Thank you for this wonderful performance.
I am honoured to be introducing this wonderful work to your class! Thank you!

What a glorious, golden tone.

This piece makes me really want a viola.

I really enjoyed this also. Who says women can't deliver passion and gravitas?
Yes, who said ?? 🤣
Love this performance. Is one of my favorite recordings of one of my favorite pieces. Thanks!
Inspired piece and a thrilling performance and fine presenrtation! Thank you both, and the rest of the team!
I'm 5 years too late but this is such an amazing performance, and your tone is beautiful! I dream of playing this piece one day like you do :D
Perfect, Marina!!!

Thank you for your beautiful performance! And thank you for that angle so I can take your fingerings.
Could I post on my page on Facebook?

Let me know if you have a page too. I'm always looking for inspiration. And this video absolutely is. Thank you ☺
Amazing as usually!

Which strings do you use?
Thank you! Yes- that was my first ever RUclips video! I was 18 on that recording, and this new one, which I'm so glad you prefer, is 10 years later!!
Forgot to mention the strings I use: Evahs on all, but A- Jarguar Medium!
A delightful piece, unfortunately seldom performed and no recordings available
Jim Puskas I included this work on my second album, ELLES, available on Spotify and Apple Music! :)

One of my favourite sonatas.
What viola do you have? By the way you sound amazing!
This is my Max Millant! Thanks! :)
@@Msgrenouille7 thank you, much appreciated
Really nice! :)
What make and year viola do you play?
This viola was made by Max Millant in 1950 (Paris)

Amazing! Thank you!
