You're doing really good Cally. Just stick with it and it will come. Short Field landings were really tripping me up to at first .... but, I decided to change things up a little bit and ended up moving my aiming point back(closer to me) about 200 feet. By doing so, eventually .... I started coming up just a little bit short of my intended touchdown zone. THAT is what I needed to really get a feel for what the airplane was going to do on landing. And with that, I was able to adjust from there, just enough to get my landing spot nailed, every time. Play with it some. Experiment with your aiming point, by moving it around a little at a time. It will trigger a "light bulb moment" and you will have it from then on out. One more thing, .... and you even said it. "I wasn't feeling comfortable with my approaches". That right there is the main reason your Short Field landings weren't satisfactory to you either. When you don't feel like your approach is "on point" ...... That is the perfect time to practice your Go Around. Until you feel SOLID in your approach, Go Around. Those are as critical to practice as well. I always told my Instructor, .... "Hey man, ..... there's absolutely No Shame in a Go Around" - he would always tell me - "That's right !!!" Just a couple of things that worked for me. Hopefully, they will help you too. Have fun - You're doing great !!

Short field landings are a difficult task to learn. I know you will conquer these and everything else will seem easier because of it. You're doing a great job. You will do just fine on your check ride.

Thank you so much!! I feel bummed that I didn't get introduced to them early on. But there was probably a reason for it.

You are definitely showing good decision making skills Cally, which will always be important. Limitations change all of the time whether they are because of the weather, the aircraft, or within yourself, but recognizing them and making good calls is the sign of a calculating and responsible pilot. Your skills will never stop developing and improving. You will conquer short field landings and many, many, other new challenges in airplanes because you’re suited well for this!! Keep up the good work!!

Oh yeah, Unusual attitudes were my favorite! Instead of having the instructor put the airplane in position while head down eyes closed. I had an instructor let me keep the controls while eye closed and make a couple turns. You get way more mixed up, and the recovery is more of a surprise!!!

Ohhhh that is such a good idea!!!! That's definitely how I felt when he had me fly for a min with my head down. Thought I was straight and level but I was indeed in a left descending turn! Thanks for watching!

I can see why you are getting frustrated but remember, this is TRAINING. Some days, you might just not have “it” and it’s best to just stop for the day and regroup. The frustration factor is not helpful and it will be gone when you resume. Believe me, I’ve been through this (just with semis, not airplanes!), it’s normal. Tomorrow is another day. You’re getting there.

Don't worry about landings that you think are poor or not perfect. It took me about 200 ugly ones before I did a flawless landing. In the 172, landings were hard. But in the 150, I aced it effortlessly.

Ugh. I hate when it feels like you are taking a step backward. Sorry it's frustrating Callie. What you are experiencing is a normal part of flight training for EVERY student. You'll get it...just keep going!
As someone also currently struggling with short field landing in the 172 on my CFI training, my advice would be to go out and do something totally different by yourself your next flight. Do some turns about a point or or S-turns across a road. Then come back the next flight after that with your CFI to work on short field landings.
One thing to check is the length of your runway aimpoint markers. They are typically 150ft long so your -0 / +200 standard for short field landings may actually be a bit longer than the aimpoint markers. You may actually be closer than you think you are!
Another thing to keep in mind while you practice for your checkride is that if you are way high or fast on your short field approach and know you're going to botch that short field landing, just say "I don't like this approach, I'm going around". The examiner would be tickled pink to see you exercising your good judgement of short field landings.
    General tips:
    - Airspeed, airspeed, airspeed. Check the POH. Look under normal procedures, short field landing. In my 172S it is 70mph after you put in full flaps. Yours is probably very similar. Make sure you aren't faster than that speed and it will really cut down on float.
    - Move your aim point a little earlier in the runway. If before you were using the beginning of the first centerline before the 1000' aimpoint marker, try using the end of the second centerline marking before the 1000' markers. As you're on final, say to yourself "I'm going to actually try to come down to THAT spot [the end of the 2nd centerline stripe before the 1000' markers]." Then as you flare, you'll pass that spot and actually end up landing on the aimpoint markers. Adjust aimpoint as needed.
    Good luck! You got it!

Aviation always challenges us. I'm guilty of high and/or fast as I sail past my intended landing spot even after 20+ years. I like to think that's aviation's way of reminding me there's room for improvement.

@@AgAviationAdventures Thank you for sharing. A gentle reminder is landing long, a more pointed reminder is standing on the brakes to stop from going off the end of the 2500' grass strip.

It’s all good ! Isn’t it funny when you’re in college do you wanna party no matter what test is coming up and you don’t think nothing about it until you walk in class the next day.
Well with your pilots test, coming up and the check ride along with the oral that’s all you can think about you can’t think about anything else your mind won’t let you ! 🤣

Stop being hard on yourself, you’re flying a flipping aeroplane around on your own. Someone going around is more about them misjudging things than anything you did. You can’t see it probably but you are so confident now you’re going to laugh at your stress soon I promise 😊
