Excellent video. I found that a home flight simulator was a great tool to practice with. You can get more time looking at the instruments, following procedures/check lists, amd making radio calls. It helped me get to my first solo quicker.
Yeah, I’ve noticed that students who use a flight simulator pick things up quite a bit faster. Great tip!
What flight simulator did you use?
What flight sim do you use
@@AlexDutyBMXMTB I’ve been told that X-plane and Microsoft flight simulator are pretty good
It's fucked up how you are not responding on what flight simulator you use when people are fuckin asking you.
I will take a moment and fully support this channel. I have actually downloaded the entire series onto my iPad and when I’m flying commercially I watch the videos. Whenever I have downtime I’m watching the videos. Bottom line, the content is excellent and summarized in such a way that makes it easy to understand. While I have paid for an online ground school (gold seal) I find some of their instruction lacking and go to RUclips and channels like this to fill in the gaps. Thank you so much for your hard work in this!
Thank you so much Aaron! That is so motivating when I get comments like this!
Just starting work on my pilots license. So glad I found your channel! I’ve completed sporty’s online course and am taking a local ground school. Still don’t feel like I’m knowledgeable enough to start paying for an instructor and an aircraft. Also finding out that all the schools I’m finding are more interested in my money than actually providing an education. Thank you for what you’re doing!
Thank you so much! Now that you e completed the ground school, I’d go ahead and start training. You’re not going to understand everything until you get in the plane and see it for yourself
Have you found a good school yet?
@@graaah. the search continues.
Getting my Pilots license was very rewarding, stressful but rewarding. i worked at my flight school as a dispatcher/line guy and got a 30% discount which helped a lot, not only that I networked my butt off while I was at my flight school met so many awesome people and mad friends with cfis who helped me study along the way. I then went on to get my ifr and then commercial followed by multi engine! It took me about 7 years ONLY because I paid out of pocket and worked at the same time. Those of you out there stressing on how you are going to pay just know that it can be done with patience and a lot of dedication! Wishing you all the very best of luck and success! See ya on the flight deck!
Yes, it is fun but very stressful at times!
Today I went on a discovery flight my son, daughter and I and we absolutely loved it. I look forward to more flight time. ❤️
Awesome! I’m stoked for you! It’s gonna get tough for a bit, but stick it out! It’s worth it!
I did most of my flight training from March-May 2021. Did my Checkride on my 17th Birthday. I only had 46 Hours, I was probably ready to do it about 42 or 43 but I changed from a C150 to a 172 for the Checkride due to max useful load. A few things that helped me to get it done efficiently: flying 2-3 times per week, completing my written exam before my first solo (it vastly helped to increase my confidence and understanding of piloting), doing most of my training in a simple 150, choosing a good instructor with 10+ years of experience (he instructs mainly as a side gig), and doing a mock Checkride before the official one. I only spent $8000 when it was all said and done. Unfortunately since then, prices have skyrocketed and the 150 I was using is no longer available. The cheapest option in my city costs $54 more than I was originally paying before, and now the instructor rate is $15-20 more. Although I don't mind the Instructor rate going up so much, the spike in rental costs has been a major turn off in pursuing my Instrument Rating. I have been hoping prices decrease as fuel costs go down, but I've yet to see it. Hopefully I can really start to fly more frequently again next year.
Yeah, it’s unbelievable how much prices have gone up. It’s tough for anyone to be able to afford them right now! You had a very similar situation to a student I trained who was training in a Cessna 172, and was ready to check, but moved and the only plane available in the area was a Cherokee. Thanks for the comment!
I learned a lot from this video. I’m getting ready to talk to my local flight school and it’s so hard to find information on what actually goes on in flight training and what to expect.
Thank you for this comment. I’m thinking about starting to make videos that document the entire process for a student
Getting my private pilot license was one of the most fun things I’ve ever done. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Now, I’m starting to use my pilot license to repossess cars and create RUclips content! 🤘🏻
Lol. That would be fun
The first xc solo is insane. When I landed at my 1st airport it all hit me. I was in a different state, at an airport with a plane. It was a real trip and I had to come back to reality 😂
I know! It’s super cool!
Another great video! I used Sporty’s for my ground school, and I really liked their whole program. I augmented those lessons with the lessons in this channel and nearly got a 90%.
Keep up the good work!
Awesome! I’ve never used sportys but I’ve heard good things. I’ve found that King schools is good, but they lack some things I’d like my students to know
Just read all the comments - I noticed that nobody mentions buying a 140/150/Champ to learn in and then selling it for pretty much what you paid for it. Obviously you need at least some cash but I sold my late model 4Runner to get an 85 HP 1947 Champ to train in and build hours and it hasn't depreciated a dollar. Once you own the plane you are profoundly motivated to finish your PPL. The key is to buy an AC with a low to mid-time engine that hasn't sat around and you are less likely to have major mechanical surprises. (Notice I only said less but the buy/learn/sell strategy can really work.) I have zero regrets.
That’s definitely an option. Great comment
Thanks for this video! About 8 hours into PPL and I've completed ground school but the checkride outline was a huge thing you mentioned because I hadn't heard of it (that I recall) until your video.
You’re welcome! I’m so glad you found this helpful!
I recommend participating in the Young Eagles program for people who are younger than 18 like me because the EAA Young Eagles after the first flight give you the Sporty Learn To Fly online course for free and some more things like EAA membership and free entrance to some museums.
Thank you so much for the recommendation! That seems like a great idea!
inspiring video. this iOS the kind of instructor we would love to learn from.
Thanks!

Wow. super informative and clear. Thank you! I am discouraged right now because I can not get financial assistance to propel my way through my PPL. I have applied many times and keep getting denied. At this point, I realize I will have to pay out of pocket for each flight lesson, materials, etc. and this means it will take me a lot slower than most who have the thousands upfront. I am enrolling in Sporty's Online Ground School this weekend, and have already passed my Medical Exam. I did not get a discovery flight but I did have my first lesson with a CFI, and it was not enjoyable. Currently looking for someone else to be instructed by. Many obstacles in a short 20 days, but, This is my dream to learn how to fly, so I am not giving up!
Thank you! Don’t give up! It’s worth it!
Yours are the only flying lesson videos I feel are worthy of sharing! Fantastic synopsis!!!

Just subcribed to your channel....I will be starting my PPL training this summer (June 2023) This video and the video on communicating with ATC are phenomenal Captain Josh. I have had every version of Microsoft Flight Sim, including the latest MSFS2020 and I am able to fly the C152, 172 182 & the A320 in the sim, which gives me lots of practice getting familiar with aircraft systems, procedures, checklist, avionics and much much more. Thank you so much !!! I will be watching ALL of you videos!!!
Thanks for the sub Terris! Look forward to having you around!
It’s now July and I’m wondering how it has went so far?
Captain Josh, I appreciate what you are doing to help pilots! I know it’s easier to keep your knowledge to yourself and have the mindset of I got mine and you guys are on your own. I have learned a great deal of information from your videos. So much, that I passed my PPL written at 95%. I took a home study course and it was good.
I then watched almost all your videos and I credit your teaching approach to my success. I’d have you teach me the practical flight maneuvers if you weren’t so far from VA. Once again, thanks!
Thanks Marcus! I appreciate that! Congrats on that great score! I’ll see you in the next video
What home course did you use?
Mannnn found this today I wish I would’ve found it before Covid it in 2020 lol I did a discovery flight then ground class and bam shut down lol this has my fire lit again 😁
Awesome! That’s my goal! You’re gonna love it!
I just bought access to an online ground school. Wish I found your vid first but I will be using your site to supplement my PPL journey.
Awesome! Enjoy the journey!

Good use of multiple camera angles as B-Roll 👍🏻

Correction, it is most satisfying, rewarding and expensive thing you can do with your life right now. I remember starting my trailer training in the late 70s. A Cessna 152 with instructor was about $49 an hour dual. Today a private pilot license can cost well over $15,000 to obtain. Just for a Cessna 172 rental it runs about $200 an hour now. And that is a solo price. Add $65 an hour for an instructor. Being out of it for a while, for me to get an IPC it has cost me near what the instrument rating add on cost me to get! I know times have changed but with Avgas 5, 6 and seven dollars plus a gallon and the cost of insurance it’s not the inexpensive hobby it used to be. It’s gotten back to being a sport of the well to do.
I get it... but sounds like you were paying a lot in the 70's. LOL... in '92 I was getting a C150 for $27 wet, and my CFI was $10. I've just recently started flying again, and a PA28-151 is $145, and the instructor id $60.
Sounds expensive. I've been working on my PPL since may and have been spending ~110 an hour(wet) for a 172
It is very expensive, but when people pay that much money out of their own pocket, they tend to take it a little more seriously. I’ve given lots of training for free, and oddly enough, it can be a blessing that it’s expensive
Let's just say that as a sport, it is a very selective sport... Not for the faint of heart, nor for the faint of wallet. 😉
@@FreePilotTraining Remember the five forces of flight. Lift, drag, thrust, gravity and of course money. All I know is it will never stop costing. If you are going to be a professional pilot it is well worth the investment. I received my commercial pilot single multi engine instrument rating. Never pursued CFI because at the time of the 90s and so forth there was no real money to be made to survive on. Now of course it’s just for fun because of age and the difficulties in obtaining a third class medical at this point. When you start taking certain medications it causes you to have to get a “Special Issuance” medical. Still can get it but a lot of paperwork annually.
2:00 For an ATP rating, per 14 CFR 61.159(a)(7), you’ll need “a buttload of hours”.
You’re not joking
If planes weren't as expensive to BUY, STORE, and MAINTAIN.. I would have gotten my pilot's license already.
They are pretty expensive
Thanks!
You’re welcome! I appreciate the Super Thanks!
Thank a lot sir, it's really helpful

Another great vid. But one point on the solo Xcountry. You say that it's the student's fault if they don't hit the 5hrs with the old standards of "One short, and one Long Xcountry". I feel it's directly the instructor's fault since most CFI's will tell you what airports they would like you to go to. But on that point... let's face it... another short Xcountry will only benefit the student even if it does cost an extra $200. I remember in my original training... flying a C150/152... it was EASY to hit the 5hr's since it flew so slow. BUT, those same flights in a Warrior or a DA40 take a lot less time. Regardless... another great vid. As a pilot who has been out of flying for 28 years... they have been very helpful.
Thanks! Yeah, some instructors are very careful over where they send their students cross country. I like to let the students pick them discuss why they may or may not want to go there. It gets them thinking through the planning on their own
@@FreePilotTraining I would agree with that. AND, in the 90's that's what my CFI did. I think the place I'm flying out of now just wants to watch for a few things, and are supposed to take students to the airports in question on the initial dual Xcountry. (We have some class B close, and some very busy uncontrolled airports) I'm getting treated a little different since I'm a returning pilot. I lost so much over the years... I don't know why I was gone so long. (Having a lot of fun getting back into it)

Question: Are you able to listen to music while flying? Or do you need your hearing for engine issues and communication?
Yes, you can. It might not always be the smartest idea, but it’s totally legal. I’d just use good judgment
Great video super informative thanks! im thinking of getting my PPL. One question I have is if you can get the PPL in a month to one year like you stated in the video, why would someone take a 3 year collage program? are they different or cheaper? thanks!
Thanks! A lot of times, an instrument rating and a commercial certificate will be part of a three year college program. Even if it’s not, a program like this can be beneficial to veterans because of it’s a degree bearing program, that can be paid for by the GI-Bill.
I want to fly around the world in a small plane. I joined the military in the hopes of getting my pilots license. Little did I know I have to pay for the private pilots license myself
You can use your GI bill. The caveat is that it must be a degree bearing program and the school must operate under part 141
Love your videos. Was wondering the DPE, who are they accountable to? I have training for 30 years and one thing I have learned is if you are not accountable to someone, you will lose perspective and a power trip takes over if not monitored. So who are these people accountable to? How do I know and trust the system to know they are doing their job and not asking questions because of a personal issue or a bad day ànd can I do something about it?if it is a power trip. What do you do? You just spent 1k?
They are accountable to the FAA. They must follow the Airman Certification Standards. If they don’t, they may not be a DPE too long. If they aren’t using the ACS, you could talk to the local FSDO
Awesome video
Thank you!
Are you planning to do a video for sport pilots license or are you planning to wait until FAA releases their final on MOSAIC
Not sure. I think my next plans are to work on an instrument series
I love all your videos, they really help a lot as I start saving up money and self studying to get ready to retry my dive into getting my PPL! Could you make a video discussing the difference between a flight school, flight clubs with instruction, and find independent flight instructors with some pointers on where to find and reach out to them? I really thrive on self study, so I want to go for a part 61, but there isn't a single part 61 school within even 2 hours of me! It's leading me to other options and it gets really confusing trying to pick the right one for the right circumstance and what I may be excelling at or missing out on with each option. Thank you!
Thanks! I really like that idea for a video. I’m hoping to make a couple videos very soon with Seth Lake that discuss some of these things. If we don’t put the video on my channel, I’ll throw it in one of my playlists so you can have access to it
Wait, wait at the very beginning is say FREE, TELL ME ABOUT THATthe
My PPL ground course is probably the most complete course on RUclips, and it’s totally free. Just check out the Private Pilot Ground Course playlist
Great. Video.
Thanks!
I'm definitely interested in the differences between part 61 and part 141. I'm trying to pre-plan and pick up as much as possible before I really get started actually training. I kinda wish I had a large tablet to download the data and read it easier and then it be used as my EFB later
Awesome! I’ll start thinking how I could tackle that video
@@FreePilotTraining awesome! Something else that may be an interesting video would be walking us through a game plan to get a PPL as cheap as possible. I think you may have covered some things already in other videos. I think it would be very interesting knowing now that maybe you would have done different or absolutely would not recommend to save money on. Maybe it's too complicated I'm not sure. I just know I'm trying to be prepared as possible before really getting started. The Far/Aim seems like a lot of reading...

I'm curious about how the flight hours work for the various certificates. Sport is 20hrs, Rec is 30, Private is 40 etc., but do the hours from one carry to the others as accumulated total hours flown or is it a compounding of hours (20+30+40)??
Yes, they do carry over.
What's the health stipulations for a private pilot. I'm asking because I take blood pressure medication.
You just have to let the Aeromedical Examiner know. Your approval process might take a little longer, so I’d get started with that process as soon as possible. ruclips.net/video/13Gr6pOTDzk/видео.htmlsi=OGGKDOWbWegV2LtZ

On my "discovery" flight i decided I wanted nothing to do with aviation. But still logged more than 150 hrs afterwards. Discovery flights mean nothing.
That’s not necessarily true. You are an exception to the rule. Not many people do that
I’m thinking about doing this. But I’m 40. Is that too old?
Nope! My father in law was in his 50s
Bro what is the most critical topic that we need to focus or go through more
They’re all important, but I’d definitely make sure you know airspace and general operating rules
Idk if I’m being played with but I was quoted 17k+ today and with my own ground school only 250 taken off also would be flown in a Cessna 172sp
Wow! Run away from that one! I know flying is expensive right now, but that’s ridiculous. What school was that?
@@FreePilotTraining it was in Florida don’t want to say their name cause I might still attend no other place in my area enless I drive an hour or 2 daily but the weird thing is they called me today and my phone registered it as scam likely only reason I called back was the voicemail and try to lower the price

Yes. Apply for you GI bill 3-4 months in advance. That’s how long it takes for the application to go through. Also, watching videos like this doesn’t hurt. And go take a discovery flight somewhere. It may cost you $150-200, but you’ll know for sure that you want to do it and you don’t waste a bunch of time if you don’t actually like it
@@FreePilotTraining thank you will do !
you said in your video about 3 hours of instrument training do you do in during your PPL course and it will be counted as total flight time of 40 hours and also be used in your instrument rating training i am little confused here can you explain a little thanks
Yes, you need 3 of those 40 hours to be training on instruments. You can use those 3 hours as part of the 20 hours of instruction needed for your instrument rating
Hii... I have been working as an Avionics Embedded Software Engineer for 12 years. I have been asked to take PPL certificate by my management. I would like to understand how it may may help me in my career. What kind of job I may do in my organization.
Well, if I understand correctly, they’re wanting you to get your PPL so you can have a better understanding of what a pilot needs when it comes to avionics. I wish everyone that designed avionics would have a real pilot give his input. Making things easier to use for real pilots is always a plus.
I find myself in a new city and state every couple months for work can I take lessons across multiple schools?
Yes you can. Most CFIs want to SEE your progress so you may have to fly a little extra because of that
Hi, I can't hear out of one ear (one side deaf 100%). Can I get pilot's licence?
That’s a great question. I actually don’t know the answer. You could go get a class 3 medical exam. If they pass you, you’re good to go. It costs like $100

And only 10hrs of solo time for a check ride?
Can you source that?
Love your vids, thanks!!
Thank you! I’m 100% sure. check out FAR 61.109
It blows my mind! I thought, you have to collect 60 or even 100 hours minimum with an instructor by the time anybody would trust you with an airplane alone. :o :D Awesome news, Captain, thank you! Great video again! Anyway, in the sim (sorry for this question :) ) you can do a normal turn or a steep turn or even an upside down 360 degree "hotdog" roll without using any rudder. Why do we need it in real life? I never fly an airplane, I have no idea. o.o
Thanks! Yeah, sometimes people accumulate that much time if they drag out their training, but you can get it as early as 35 hours if you use part 141. As far as the rudder is concerned, imagine that your turning a corner in a car and the back wheels start skidding out. In a car, we can correct that by turning the wheel. In an airplane, sometimes the TAIL skids outward like a car or doesn’t turn as quickly as it should. We can use the rudder to align the tail with the nose so there is minimal drag on the airplane which would slow us down. If you’re already slow, this could result in a stall and even a spin.
@@FreePilotTraining Wow, thank you for your answer, Captain. I understand now. Well, it seems, these sims are still far from perfect, aren't they? :)

It’s insane these days. It’s because fuel costs tripled during COVID and have yet to come back down
@@FreePilotTraining I personally think that THAT is overly used as a crutch for majority of these companies to use to get away with hiking up their prices cuz they try to be "bigger" than they really are. ( too many employees etc )
and these are the SAME pilots that complain that there is a pilot shortage. and yet , here we are lol
even if the economy comes down , these prices arent. they got a taste of this and they wont wanna come back.
Its sad.
oh well , I'll just stay patient till it happens MY way.
@@theregoesmiller389 i actually agree with you. These companies have gotten greedy in a bunch of ways. Hotels don’t clean anymore, and no one can get anyone to work. It’s ridiculous
@@FreePilotTraining If you know any good hearted instructors in the arizona area , please lmk.
I used FLY8MA and it was REALLY good. You can contact them for any questions throughout the course. They have videos that explain in depth and tons of practice tests. Your material is on par with his! Great job!! Will you ever set your material up to where someone can take your course material and when it’s done, sign for them to take the written for a fee? Seems a great way to add to the aviation community.
Thank you so much! I’ve heard good things about FLY8MA. I haven’t used any of their stuff, but their RUclips videos are great. I do have future plans to offer endorsements for students in the future. I need to finish my Private Pilot series first, and then I will work on that
@@FreePilotTraining where do you train out of and are you taking new students?
@@jamesandrews598 I do some training out of North Little Rock KORK. It is close to Little Rock AFB where I fly for the reserves. I’m probably going to be moving soon, but I’m not sure where yet. I’m so busy at the moment, I can’t currently take on new students unless it was just super convenient for me. I’m hoping to change that in the near future
@@FreePilotTraining I have relatives up in Cabot! Well good luck buddy! 👍
@@jamesandrews598 awesome! That’s a nice area

There is NOTHING FUN about obtaining any Aeronautical Certificate. It's a lot of Hard work and dedication. Too many GA Pilots are killing themselves & passengers to be FUN. The more serious you take learning to fly PROFESSIONALLY/Proficiently the more likely you will LIVE to OLD AGE and not be a static in the FAA's files. Like one of my many instructors said each certificate is a LICENSE to LEARN you now have the BASICS time to start to Polish them. Just as a note about the Instrument Written, Every question you get wrong is a potential death sentence. Instrument flight is not a GAME on your Computer. Strive to be PROFESSIONAL in every phase of your life will make you a better pilot and person too.
I completely respect your opinion. Flying is something we need to take completely serious, but I do think it’s important to enjoy it a little too. I agree that we shouldn’t do stupid things, but if you don’t enjoy it, what’s the point?
all that is just get all the money from the people
Aik??? Why card?? So where did the passport book for ppl..hahaha maybe the card was fake.
Lol. The card is fake. I didn’t want to use a real one

Perfect example of why pilots are never black $$$$
I’m 21 and got a loan for flight school on my own, all online without seeing anyone in person. I have a few black coworkers that make just as much money as me. I have solid credit (haven’t screwed myself over, I have no major debt) and am paying for the loan with no savings or parental backing. Anyone can do it on their own don’t shoot yourself in the foot don’t be a victim.
There’s actually a bunch that are so I beg to differ and suggest you do research
Hi iam from india suggest me a best institute that helps me do PPL fast track any where in the world less than 15k USD please
There are a lot of them out there, but there aren’t any I would specifically recommend.
Hello, I'm 6'9" tall. Am i to tall to fly? Private certificate
Ooh. I really don’t know. I’d say go take a discovery flight and see how well you fit
Thanks. How would i go about that? I'm in Greenville, SC.
@@bgsixxxninerlook up on Google where you can get a discovery flight near you. I have done this myself but I live on an airport so it was fairly simple for me so not sure about you. Google did help a lot though.
is the 14 year old aloud taken the written test at his age
Yes but wait till you turn 15 so you can use that one for the checkride
@@FreePilotTrainingThank you and does he have to do anything other than fly with someone to fly at his age for fun like/ground school
I got mine early 80’s while full time college student and paying as I went. I skipped ground school and read the books and passed written with 98. I used high school trig and vectors to work all the nav problems. I think the 152 plus instructor was $36 per hour and back then, that was a lot of money. I passed check ride first time. To me the boring ground reference maneuvers were probably the most important aspect as you learn how wind and ground speed relate. You pick up the radio work as you go along. I learned out of a controlled airport and that helped. I made myself do solo XC into larger controlled airports so that I wouldn’t be afraid later. It was a good solid education with many practical applications outside flying. I went on to own two airplanes and wasn’t afraid to go anywhere. I had some tense situations but handled them. I always followed the rules and was cautious and never hesitated to call it off and drive instead. The rules are for a reason. Even following them, you will get into situations. The ticket is really just a license allowing you to learn how to fly a plane legally.
It’s amazing how much times have changed. Yes, a friend of mine once told me that a Private Pilot License is a license to learn
awesome
Thank you
No problem!
thank you
You’re welcome!
HE'S 14!?!?!!?
Yeah. He’s a big boy for 14 I know
If anyone is looking to sell their training materials at a discounted rate please comment on this. Im 40 and im starting ground school next month!!! So excited!
Is becoming a pilot a rich man's hobby? Or is it possible for a normal person to afford it?
