      Little update on my spectrum gig service. They state it actually 940mbps max but so far I’ve only pulled 847mbps on a hard wired connection. My Xbox consistently pulls 600-650mbps with a max of 701 I’ve pulled on that. Overall it’s decent but I’ve been having some service problems on spectrums end with my service cutting out randomly for like 10min.

    We just upgraded to the 400mbps and it's definitely faster for all devices in my home than the 100mbps was. We even had dead spots all throughout and now there are 0. Id say it's a winner in my household.

Considering it, but can't stand Spectrum and really don't want to give them anymore of my money. Unfortunately, I don't have any other options and Spectrum has monopolized my area.... My 200 mbps is usually about 30-50. 2 wifi phones, laptop new M1 Pro (this seems to be getting the worst wifi speeds of everything) and tv using most of the bandwidth. Around 75 on a GOOD day. Another reason people might not see expected speeds is due to router and modem choices. Another commonly overlooked important component is the cabling used. I have family and friends asking me why they don't get the speeds they should and it's usually due to using the old cat5e cables. Using cat6 or even better, cat6a (transmission bandwidth is doubled, from 250 to 500 MHz, and Cat6a cables are often shielded preventing crosstalk) will greatly improve speeds and connectivity. Hardware and cables make a difference, don't be fooled if someone says cabling and modem choices don't matter. Dump the cable company modem and buy your own, well worth the investment.

    It's just me, so I opted for 100mbps from Spectrum. I use Wifi on my smartphone at home instead of data, my Xbox One, and a laptop. So I don't have a lot bogging it down. I'm so glad I found your video on this, because I was debating if I should opt in on 400mbps, but the difference doesn't seem that remarkable to me. I don't do much, if any, multiplayer online gaming so the only thing it would improve would be download speeds for large files. A few minute variance isn't going to make or break me, if I can just start a download and go do something else while it does its thing. Thanks for this! It was very informative and helpful! I'll stick with my 100mbps after all.

Now with WIFI 6 and 6ghz spectrum band is out will give better results when you upgrade to new computer/ laptop. You will get 400+mbps on WIFI when you upgrade. You're never going to able to get 400mbps on the 2.4GHz wifi, The 2.4GHz gives coverage at a longer range but transmits data at slower speeds. 5GHz band provides less coverage but transmits data at faster speeds. In the 2.4GHz wifi there are 14 channels, Most of the available channels overlap each other, which means that your devices are fighting for the same few narrow channels, If your loptop doesn't support the 5GHz wifi, Set your 2.4GHz wifi to channel 1, 6 or 11, that's the only 3 channels that don't overlap each other in the 2.4GHz Wifi.

    I had upgraded to a gig and it was horrible ... spectrum basis their speed off how many people are using it at that time ... which sucks ... so if ur neighbors have spectrum and they are using the internet etc u will be running slow. I don’t care what it shows ur speeds are it’s how it performs when you are gaming

    • @JonnySteven
      @JonnySteven  5 лет назад

      I would say my speeds are pretty good honestly, I'm hardwired through a range extender so have that in mind. But I normally run anywhere from 20-35 ping on fortnite and never have any latency issues or even packets lost. Given I'm not playing 24/7 like some streamers but I have no complaints, so far one of the best services I've had with internet but also if I had Verizon in my area I would hands down get that 😂 but spectrum is the only one that gets my area and att but I have a terrible history with them.
      Hope this helps!

    Unless you have any 4k compatible devices, and you have more than 10-20 devices in the WiFi network then it's not really nessesary.... 100 Mbps is enough for most to get through the internet.
    Also make sure your router/modern can handle speeds up to 400+ Mbps otherwise you need to buy a completely sperate one that can handle those speeds because your current router/modern can be bottlenecked by the speeds.

    Being that that laptop doesn’t support 5ghz. It’s most likely wireless g only. Not wireless n. Wireless g tops out at 54mbps I believe. The problem is. The router will dumb down the network for lesser devices to compensate. So if everybody is on the 2.4ghz band and they are all wireless n capable. Then they can get up to 100mbps. But the moment that laptop hops on. They will all then be downgraded to wireless g. Being that the router can only support one tech at a time on that one band. So now all the WiFi devices on the 2.4ghz band have 54mbps to share. But it looks like the laptop itself is topping out at 45 consistently. If you upgrade to 400. You’ll have to be on the 5ghz band to get those speeds. Most people don’t need that much internet speed. It’s consistency they usually have a problem with. I would say each person on in the home doesn’t need more than 10mbps to themselves. Accept when downloading big files like games

      The best time to get a deal is when your price lock is going to end, call and say you've been wanting to switch because they offer better speeds at another company and usually they hook you up 👍

    I got a question. If I use the same internet on an Xbox and Ps4, this internet being 400 mbps, will I suffer lag on both consoles? Or do you recommend me to keep it in use for one console only?

      Only on the Xbox because the make a wish foundation doesn’t have the best internet. But the PS4 will be fine. 😂

    Your wifi card on your laptop and/or your router are both just too old to use your internet speed.
