After trading in my Silverado for a new Tacoma, it was time to build a new truck camping setup. In this video, I go over the details of the build including my electrical system, 2KW diesel heater, general construction, finishes, and entertainment system. This build turned out fantastic!
With a little imagination and some basic tools, building a custom truck camping setup to your own specifications and needs is a fun way to get out and enjoy camping and exploring on the road.

Great vid. Concise straight to the point, NO ANNOYING MUSIC. Great info and ideas. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you!
Exactly. I hate music in DiY videos.
This is an awesome looking build. Have you thought about or considered making a "How It's Wired" video for it?
Excellent build. Simple and clean… elegant in its design. I’ve got a tune m1 ordered and this build, of all the builds I’ve found is top of my list. Thank you for a great presentation.
Wow. What a build and a very concise video with not a lot of wasted time spent on minor things. One of the best videos I've every watched.
Thanks for watching!
Yea aside from your build being amazing, your video rocks. Thanks!
You sir got yourself a dope setup. Nice shirt too. I love rapala jerk baits. Got me lots of striped bass with that .
Not much to say...- incredible DIY build
Thank you.
I really enjoyed this presentation. It covered a lot of details about the build. All in all, the build looks great for a D.I.Y.
Thank you!
Awesome job Andy!!
I just got a RAM 1500 with a 6'4" bed, as soon as I can find a hard shell canopy for it I'm using this design as a starting point!
Smart Cap
Sounds like a fun project!
Awesome build. You should start selling these.
Maybe one day!
@@Outside605 I would get on your list if you do! (But pass on the diesel heater!) Excellent ideas and execution! 😎✌️
put me on the list!@@Outside605
Would definitely buy a box just like this from you if you sold these!! Nice build!
If I had more free time, that would be a fun side hustle. They are kind of a labor of love and I engineer on the fly. Thanks for watching
I would for sure buy a box like this from you also. You covered everything well with this build.
That was an awesome build your electric and diesel heater was a nice addition thanks for sharing
What an outstanding build. I want one. Thx for sharing.
Thank you. It was a fun project. Glad people enjoy the build.
Awesome build, nicest I've seen. Great video too!
Thanks for watching!
Your builds are amazing! I wish that I had your set up in my truck. Kudos to you and your attention to detail Andy! Keep doing what you do!!
Much appreciated, thank you!
Outstanding build! A nice mix of attention to detail using cost effective parts. I’ve used many of the parts you show in various boat and trailer projects over the years, the way you put them together and finish is top notch. Thanks for taking the time to put this together, I’ll be using several of your ideas.
Thank you!!
Well done, Sir! Very nice, well thought-out build. Enjoy the fruits of your labor!!!
Thanks for watching!
Beautiful Build! Well done. Very inspiring.
Thank you.
You were my inspiration to purchase pieces for my future solar area in my rig. Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
tThat is so Awesome definitely need for mine.
Awesome box build!
Thank you!
Dude, you’re truck build is awesome. Subscribed.
Thanks for watching, much appreciated!
You did a great job. Looks so good.

very well-planned and designed build. I'm thinking of framing something similar, thanks for the inspiration.
Thanks for watching!
OUTSTANDING, ONE OF THE BEST BUILDS I HAVE SEEN, ENOUGH THAT I LIKED AND SUBBED YOUR CHANNEL.
Thank you!
that is a sweet heater !!! thanks for sharing ! the Build also came out so nice great job !
Thanks for watching!
This was fantastic and a joy to watch. I wish I was half as enthusiastic about anything in life.
Thanks for watching.
Nice work! Very well done! Enjoyed the video!
Thank you!
I really like the setup. I think i'll do basically the same thing with aluminum extrusion. Looks comfy in there!
Sounds like a fun project. Thanks for watching
Love this build. Might have to use a few of your ideas for my f-150.
Me too
Thank you!
Very nice build!
Thank you!
Great Job
Thank you!
I like it! Can't beat a Taco!
Thank you!
Very efficient build
Thank you!
Super impressed by your build and I'm inspired. I just need to figure out hour to add a second bed platform for those occasions when my wife joins me. Great job. I would love to see individual build videos on specific items like the electrical system and diesel heater.
I recently did a video of the diesel heater install. I have plans to do an electrical video soon as well. Thanks for watching.
Brilliant!
Thank you.
You did an outstanding job . You are a very talented guy.
Thanks for watching.
This is awesome. I'm amazed about how you run all these electric wires.
I want to do this for my truck, but unfortunately, I don't have the knowledge or the skills.
awesome video, thanks for sharing
Thank you!
You're no amateur that's an awesome build. You should make it a business!
Thank you!
I love your stuff and I am going to make like yours.
Wow dude what an awesome build, and an outstanding presentation of it. Thanks man I'll be buying a lot of the items you linked from it for my own build.
Thanks for the kind words and for watching.
Very nice work!
Thank you.
Plz make more vids of truck camping like this!
I hope to real soon. Thanks for watching!
For anyone looking for a simple electrical system get an EcoFlow solar battery bank and panel. I love my Eco Flow. Bluetti is another great brand.
Nice!
Thank you!
thank you .....
Welcome!
I’m doing this😎👍!
What do I think of this build? Well, I think it's brilliant! You've designed and execuated a clean and thoughtful installation with attention to safety and functionality. Thanks for the ideas from this and your other videos! Safe travels.
Thanks for stopping by and watching.
Loving your content! For your seats use seat jackers from "Desert Does It" it makes a world of difference. They're aluminum blocks l that bolt to your floor of the truck and jack the front of your seat up by 1.25 inch and gives you a better seat position for your legs and will give you a more truck like feel.
HaHaHa..I thought you were fish food!! I've been watching you for a while now. Every new build is better than the last. Hope you're doing well.
I’m here. Did a lot of fun things over the past year and RUclips camping videos were on hold. Fished in Europe, Texas, California, and Tennessee. Attended the Bassmaster Classic.
Now back to making videos again. Thanks for sticking around, much appreciated.
Great job! Everything you need and nothing you don't. You might consider some "bed stiffeners", Tacoma bad rails can widen over time with a topper. Google em, many different companies make them for the taco!
Thanks for the idea!
love your camper build .. i'am getting ready to build something similar for my tundra ..how did you secure you bed platform to your truck thanks
Man!! This is such a sweet DIY Setup! Almost better than bought builds!! Great job brother! I just started watching you and i am not subscribed :)
Awesome! Thank you!
Get to 🎥 filming! You did great! Nice build btw!
Hopefully do some this weekend. Thanks for watching.
Great job! Did you design the cockpit for the space shuttle? lol. Well done!
LOL, thanks for watching.
Only thing i might have done is add a couple drawers to the end with a gas one stove and utensils.
Thought about it but that's where I mount my diesel heater fuel tank so I can reach it to fill at the pump. Otherwise, yeah a drawer or two would be great. Thanks for watching.
I like your build. I don't recall you mentioning this or not. But, one thing that I suggest for you to add, is a DC to DC charger. That way your truck alternator can keep your house battery topped off while you are driving to your destination. Just my opinion.
I've thought about that but am unsure how well that works with lithium batteries. I've read mixed things. Thanks for watching!
Fantastic build. Does that fridge slide around when offroading?
Not really but I'm also not doing any hardcore off road. Mainly BLM trails to get to remote camping areas. It stays put very well. I suppose I could always use a heavy bungee cord if needed.
Well I see you put the most important item in your build - a bottle opener.
Absolutely! Can't lose it that way.
I have a 200 amp hour from my boat ( warm enviroment). I've moved to the mountains and I'm concerned about freezing temps when I'm not warming the bed (most of the time, have to work right?!) How do you handle this or what are your thoughts? Thanks for the great video!
Great build but dang that box is high lol. Do you have any head space in there?
It's deceptive because of the mattress, sleeping bag, and blanket. It sits below the bed sides and with the high rise shell, there is plenty of room. Thanks for watching.
How did you mount your bench to the truck bed? Great build BTW!
It's not. I added rubber furniture type feet to the bottom of the box. They sink into the bedrug and hold it pretty securely in place. truth be told, I've done this on all my builds and none have ever moved, even on some crazy BLM trails.
Thanks for watching.
For power, get an ECOFLOW Delta 2 1080w.
I have a 100ah lithium battery integrated into this build.

Great work. I'd love to use some of the items you selected. Can you provide links?
Very soon I'll have a video on this. Thank you!
Do you get leaks
Looks great whats the MPG on that rig no trailer ? I get 14-16 on my set up
I’m seeing roughly 15-17 mpg not towing. Definitely not great but I like the truck.
What about A/C?
Wifey wants to know what brand electric cooler are you showing! We have an Iceco.
It's a BougeRV purchased on Amazon. Works really well.
This is exactly what I want to put in mine, the whole electrical system looks like it might be above my skill set though. Do you do this for other people?
I don't but don't underestimate your skills. A nice setup doesn't necessarily have to look like this. I'm always here for advice if needed. Thanks for watching.
Very, very nice DIY build. Question or maybe I missed it doesn't a diesel heater need an air intake and exhaust and if so where is it on your truck?
Thank you. The intake and exhaust run through the bed of the truck via a turret plate. I will have a video on this soon.
Hi, love your setup! Thank you for taking the time to make the video and show it. I have a memory foam mattress I need to cut to size. Can you tell me the dimensions of your mattress and also I have been looking on Amazon for the same cover but can't seem to find it. Could you kindly provide a link to what you ordered? Thanks for your time.
I would like the link also. Thanks
ME TOO!@@frankimperiale4470
I bought this from a local hardware type store. I will try and get the dimensions and reply back. Thanks!
Cover link is now in the description
Thank you!!@@Outside605
You need a dcdc charger! Love the build though
I'm using a Lithium battery and I'm not sure how well those two play together. Something to look into though.
@@Outside605 almost every charger available on the market should be compatible with lithium. Much better to charge your second battery as you drive! I’ve got the renogy one with mppt you can hook solar directly to and 100ah of lithium
I assumed you meant charging off the trucks alternator. In boats, lithium starting batteries are a no no for most outboard manufacturers because the charging output of the alternator doesn't work with *most* lithiums. Mercury for instance, approved a very specific lithium battery where the BMS accepts the alternator output. A generic amazon lithium (like the one in my video) would just shut down in that instance.
How do you get your smart alternator to put out enough power to charge the battery? Normally the alternators kick off at a certain point? I'm new at this, so just asking. Thanks.
I don't charge from the alternator. I do all of my charging with shore power (ac outlet) or with a small generator.
The bed looks like a coffin at first
It offers eternal rest.
Im having a hard time finding used toppers/caps for my short bed 2020 tacoma. If there are any caps for toyota they always seem to be long bed. Do you know any other car drands that caps will fit on mine?
Just keep watching. Eventually, they pop up for sale. Be ready to make a deal because they don't last long.
Do they have Toppers for a Toyota Tundra long bed?
Yes; I have one.
Nice build. What is the dimension of your bed?
I'll have to measure for sure and reply back
Would you have any interest in building one for me in a Ford F350. Thank you, Clay
I think it would be a fun project but free time is not on my side currently. That would make for a very comfortable, large space. Good luck!
I want to do a build for my 2005 pre runner access cab .looking for a shell would you help with a parts list for a fee or do a build for a fee?
I will do a video on all of the parts in this build. Hopefully in the next couple weeks.
Truck bed length? Model of Bedrug floor mat? Thanks.
It's a 6' box. Model is the Bedrug classic mat.
I noticed there are no fans in this generation. Are you planning on adding some or are they not necessary.
I just didn't have the room in this version. The Tacoma box is significantly smaller than the Silverado so things got a little tight. I have other fan ideas I'm working on. Ventilation is always necessary on hot summer trips. Stay tuned.
does your rig leak where the cap meets the truck bed
Not this one. But it has the double gasket that seals up well. Thanks for watching.
What secures the base/frame in place to the truck?
It has rubber feet that kind of sink into the carpet mat. Even on the roughest roads, it doesn't move. Sounds strange but this is the 3rd version of this I've built and none were bolted or strapped.
Thanks for watching.
Are you still using your ac unit on the tailgate?
Yes, in fact I built a new version for this truck. I will have a video on that this spring. Thanks for watching.
How tall is your bed build and how wide thx gonna do the exact same thing
I will do some exact measurements and reply back. Thanks you!
How did you install the diesel heater? Did you have to cut out a part of the bed/shell to reduce the exhaust?
My most recent video shows the full installation of the diesel heater. Thanks for watching
@@Outside605 thank you for sharing with us!
Why don't you run your battery charger off the factory inverter while your driving?
Often I travel to an area (lake) for an extended weekend fishing trip. Once I'm there, I don't really move the truck other than to launch or load the boat. I have to have the generator to charge the boat batteries anyway so I just charge both with it. It would be interesting to see if the factory inverter would do it though.
Thanks for watching.
Why he didn’t go with bluetti portable power station with solar ?
I have a big 100ah battery. It allows me to run all of my lights, inverter, fridge, etc for several days without needing a charge.
Will dirt sand get in it if im in dirt sand all day?
You can add a tailgate sealing gasket. If it's really dusty, dust can still find a way in.
How are you liking your sumo springs? I also have a 23 tacoma with a shell, I pull a small tiller boat with camping gear.
I originally installed the blue sumo springs. They didn’t hold up to towing my boat. Basically they imploded. I exchanged them for the black ones and they’ve been great. I feel like if you’re hauling gear and/or towing, some kind of a helper is needed. Sumos are easy.
I have a 16 foot Lund tiller steer with a 40hp, I’d say 1500lbs with the trailer. Which ones would you recommend the black or the blue?
@@kyniehus69 The black ones aren't as rough as the reviews would suggest. I'd go black.
Awesome, thank you, like you said the reviews had me worried the black ones would be too harsh when unloaded.
what type of fridge is that?
Bouge RV. Works great.
What are the dimensions of your bed?
The sleeping bed is 72" long x 22" wide.
Please provide links for all the products.
YES, PLEASE!
I've been trying to find time to make more content and this is high on my list. Very soon!
Links are now in the description
Looked like a casket in the thumbnail lol
Lol
My thoughts too! I think it’s because of those lights around it.
What a fantastic build! Truly the best I've seen so far. I'm really impressed with how everything came out. For myself, I'd like to find a way to extend the width of the bunk when sleeping so as not to be right up against the window, but able to be put out of the way when not in use. Do you have an estimate of how much your build cost? Nice job!!
That bed is long enough?
It's 6' But inside where I lay down is more like 6'6" because I built the top of the mattress even with the top of the tailgate. With how the topper shots, that gains me 6" of length. Hope that makes sense.
Is this a 6’ bed?
Yes it is.
Nice build - just can’t swing it with my TRD Pro with 5’ bed. As far as fuel mileage - anything is better than the 14.4 mpg I got with my ‘19 Chev Trail Boss.
$400 for a lithium battery? Jeez!!!
You can find cheaper ones, I bought the one with the best reviews at the time. $400 isn't much more than a good AGM battery these days though.
