      Very insightful explanation by Gary Neville. Best memory of Juan Sebastián Verón for me was when United did a 2003 preseason tour of the USA and in the game against Juventus. Seba produced a wonderful flick on the outside of his right foot and amongst so many players in the box to find the prolific Ruud van Nistelrooy who took it on his chest and volleyed it into the back of the net. Seba's ingenious ability to track the run, produce an amazing flick onto RvN's chest, and on the outside foot with so many players in the box to find RvN was a Seba highlight for me. Here is that clip of that classic assist from Seba and the devastating finish by RvN seen here ruclips.net/video/qp2Tzw3OHa8/видео.html and in better quality here at 7:26 ruclips.net/video/I8SlCh2IVIk/видео.html. Breathtaking, magnificent, the sheer skill was truly outrageous.

    Veron was an excellent footballer with excellent composure on the ball and lots of experience with Argentina's national team so it is bollocks to suggest he was overwhelmed by being at United. To add to what Gary said, I think another key factor for Veron not adapting that well was that Keane was fading off at that point and couldn't provide the midfield protection that Veron needed to work his magic. Same too for the back four. I believe at that time they had Rio and Mikel and it didn't stabilize until Gabriel Heinze, Vidic and Evra came in much later, so whenever Veron's high-risk passes got intercepted there was always a real risk it could lead to a goal. The pace and style of the PL probably also played a part but Veron's true value was in the Champions League. He was fantastic and his injury coincided with United getting knocked out of the competition in one of this final years at United.

    Whether United fans want to admit or accept it, the reason Veron ultimately didn’t work out was Ferguson. Ferguson was never a coach. He was old Skool manager. He didn’t know what to do with such a modern technically gifted South American. Anyone that remembers Veron in Italy before he came to united knows his true quality. Yes, Italy was a slower league with slightly more time on the ball but Veron didn’t need time to know what to do. He could dictate any pace. You don’t buy a player like Veron with that mystical element who can float around the pitch like a Ballet dancer and tell him he needs to play in a certain structure. At Lazio he was told to play with freedom. And it worked with devastating effect.

    • @avikellerman4539
      @avikellerman4539 2 месяца назад

      I'm a Lazio fan who watched his whole career in Serie A and I don't agree with your analysis.
      Veron at United was like trying to fit a square peg in a round hole in my opinion. He came in for a huge transfer fee (at the time) and Ferguson clearly intended on making him a key player at the club. So the suggestion that Ferguson essentially stifled Veron's "freedom" isn't very realistic. He simply wasn't a good fit for that system and with that particular side and those particular players.
      And even after he left, Ferguson never really used a midfielder like him at Utd. Even when they eventually moved to 4-3-3. It was an older Scholes playing alongside water carriers like Keane, Carrick, Fletcher, Hargraves. He never really. Man Utd's midfield was always about intensity and winning the ball back, then moving it quickly to the wings or the forwards. They never really had creative highly technical dancer types in there. They didn't even use #10s either. If they did, it would be a technical striker like Cantona or Rooney dropping deep.
      Imo it just wasn't meant to be. I don't think Veron was a great fit for the PL in that era, the only English club I think he would have done well at during that era is Arsenal. Other than that he was much more suited for Serie A. Or La Liga with Barcelona or RM, or even at Valencia or Deportiva La Coruna at the time. Still, during his Lazio and Parma days he was an absolute gem of a player. This was the time when Zidane was at his peak and played in Serie A and Veron was arguably better. Some of the touches and goals he world score would make Zidane blush.

    At the moment, United have no playing style/structure. After 5 or 6 completely different managers, we have no identity. Ten Hag was brought in to give us one, but it appears he has been allowed to give up on that idea, leaving us with even more buy/sell headaches. When we crash out of the CL and it becomes impossible to qualify for the CL, Sir Jim will get an itchy trigger finger. It’s up to him to plan for that event.
    As a successful business man with experience of running football clubs, in the lead up to that point, he should ensure the club decide what the f*** they want to be, so when the time comes they can appoint the necessary staff to build the new identity; football director, scouting department, manager and coaches, and give those that don’t fit the new identity a ‘thanks very much, but it’s time to leave now’ conversation. Instead of this wishy washy nobody knows what’s going on bullshit we see at the moment. This club lacks conviction, and that’s on the Glazers, as it’s their responsibility to ensure those that operationally run the club, are capable of doing so, especially at one of the world’s biggest sporting institutions. I think Sir Jim will know this, and he will be savvy and ruthless enough to make the changes.

There are clubs that are successful with multiple major shareholders.
      The Glazers handicap us financially, but if they had appointed capable football people to run the football side of things, we would be in a much better position. I think having Ratcliffe in charge of football matters is a major step in the right direction.

    I respect Gary's opinion, but justifying Veron's poor performances to a change of formation is ridiculous.
    These were some of the best players in their positions in world football. Its not like we were putting Veron in the Goalkeeper position. He played in his favored position alongside world-class players in a team that just came off winning the CL & multiple PL trophies.
    End of the day, despite his natural talent, his form was too inconsistent, especially in the PL. The fact Chelsea payed us what was 16mil+ for him showed what Fergie thought of his performances, and they certainly didn't improve upon leaving us.
    It makes me sad to think about actually, because i loved watching him play, he had a certain elegance and flair that made people stand up in their seats, it was that passing & shooting technique (he had a tendency to score some beautiful goals because of this) that made me love him so much.
