Jolly: picks chipper jones instead of hank aaron 30 seconds later: “man i’m on today!” 30 seconds later: “Ernie Banks for outfield or first base right?”
They're all incredibly knowledgable... but only when it comes to a narrow time frame. Overall, I'd ballpark it as the last 20 years. This comes up in the comment threads all of the time, how crazy it is that they can name a random player's OPS+ from 2019 but then have never heard of Rogers Hornsby or someone on that level. And I can never criticize because I'm the total opposite. I can recall with strange detail the lineup for, say, the 1982 Milwaukee Brewers or tell you precisely the top five MLB stolen base leaders in 1980. Yet I couldn't guess within 100 either way what Spencer Strider's career strikeout total is or even what Luis Arraez' batting average was last year.
@@6thwilbury2331 we’re not talking about hornsby or strider or arraez. we’re talking about not naming hank aaron in a single team hits draft, and not knowing that Ernie Banks wasn’t a first baseman. this shit is elementary for anyone wether their knowledge is recent or not.
It’a also a shame that nobody knew anything *about* Ty Cobb. I get that he’s not super relevant to much of modern MLB, but he’s a 150 WAR player with the highest career batting average of all time. @@JadenAprilyeah but he’s 2nd all time in hits. He has a pretty infamous reputation (which has mostly been proven false in recent history). If you follow baseball and baseball history, that name should jump out when hits are talked about.
While watching I realized I certainly overestimated how long certain ancient players were with their teams. I was sitting there thinking "someone needs to pick Nap Lajoie" - who was prominent enough that the Cleveland team was called the "Naps" for the early part of their history - but he "only" hit 2500 with them.
Lajoie actually one of the best answers as he is not only the leading hitter in cleveland history, but he also played second base which jolly and shelfy both got really low scores at.
He played a couple of seasons before they (and the AL itself) existed- he was one of the biggest star level players to jump over to the AL which was a big factor in his prominence with the Cleveland team that early in its history
Wagner wouldn't have been a correct pick though. Clemente had more as a Pirate and the 3 SS they took all had more hits for a single team than Wagner who was a little less than 3,000 with the Pirates. With Musial there is an argument for Yadi. Obviously less hits but is the best C so in this type of draft there is a legit argument. Now did they think of that, no I think they just forgot about him. Cobb is absolutely inexcusable
@@johndeangelis8424 No they didn't. The Pirates already existed before the Colonels foulded. The Colonel's owner bought an interest in the Pirates and took about a dozen players with him which ended the Colonels but they aren't the same franchise

Just looked at Zack Wheat's baseball reference page. Interesting player I had no idea existed. Seemed like he was one of the NL's best contact hitters for much of his career, but also had stretches as one of the league's best power hitters.
Im assuming the reason Mauer made best possible lineup over Yadi is because Musial also made the lineup and you can’t have 2 players from the same franchise in the lineup?
nice pull on tris speaker. i was thinking nap lajoie the entire time but figured nobody had heard of him; and i'm gonna be honest i had no idea that tris speaker played for the indians. I just immediately thought of Nap because he was so damn good they named the team after him (they were called the Naps until 1915)
This is a very cool idea. An idea I had that y'all could do in the future would be an ERA draft, where you draft pitchers who have like 15+ starts in a season or a noticeable number (not just one or two fluke starts), and the ERA is your score. The player with the lowest ERA wins! Just an idea, keep up the great work!
I've got an idea for another one of these episodes, but with a twist; Who can select the WORST starting lineup? Basically, choose whatever stat to focus on (home runs, steals, ERA, etc.), but only players with "X" amount of starts or AB's in the chosen season. I feel like it would make for a great series of episodes!
This particular game is why it probably pays to know the old-timers, as they were far more likely to stick with a single team. For every Derek Jeter in the last few decades, there are people like Ty Cobb, Stan Musial, Honus Wagner, et al who played their entire careers in one place. In fact, there is a great book called Hometown Heroes that features profiles on all of the players who lasted 10+ years (or something like that) with only one MLB team. The author, Clay Sigg, was a real estate guy in Sacramento but was a huge baseball fan in his free time. As I understand it, he went around and interviewed the living members of his list, which had to be the coolest project ever for a seamhead.
Jolly: “ooh good pick I thought you were gonna take Jeter” Jake: still has wrap around pick left, takes Jeter Jolly is always shooting himself in the foot in these lol
You should put the teams on the screen and cross them off the board as you go. Makes it more difficult to play along without knowing what teams are left.
Next time, you guys should draft teams with the most wins. Each person can draft 10 of the 30 teams, you have to pick the year that had the most wins. Can't pick the same team twice.
I did the draft before the video started. Of course, not playing against them helps but I picked up 25,136 hits with Bench C, Killabrew 1B, Biggio 2B, Jeter SS, Schmidt 3B, Yount OF, Mays OF, Cobb OF, and Ortiz DH. Feel pretty dumb about not getting Hank, Yaz, or Stan..
and with the 10th pick in the Jomboy Media All-Time Hits Draft, Jolly “I’d never draft a Brave” Olive selects: Chipper Jones, 3rd baseman, Atlanta Braves.
Hits is so much better than Avg. because some guys could be 1/2 and have a .500 avg, but if you make in only qualified hitters, people like Corey Seager wouldnt count even thought he played most of the season

The Jose Canseco A's answer was bad answer but looking at it not nearly as bad as it seemed initially- while the A's are a historical franchise with lots of legendary players they've always had a thing about getting rid of their best players early due to finances (I guess that is how you move three times).
