My biggest manga pet peeve is when a character is supposed to be 'absolute gorgeous, beyond anyone else' and then every other character with lines looks just as good as they do. It really annoys me
@L Mars Teruhashi has that constant sparkle effect 😂 which is the main thing setting her apart character design-wise. She does also have bigger eyes with eyelashes and a more "conventionally attractive" hairstyle too compared to the girls she's usually around, so they did put in at least some effort. (As opposed to Yumehara with the short hair and Mera with the ponytail.)
Exactly! I hate when a show has to tell you that a character is pretty instead of showing you. It’s like “This character is drop dead gorgeous as an important plot point! But since we’re afraid of drawing the other characters as anything less than just as beautiful, it doesn’t really make an impact on you.”
The ‘Yaoi hands’ phenomenon always make me giggle. Like imagine you’re a cute anime boy/girl and your love interest pulls up and it’s just salad fingers
My most hated “trope” is who needs consent it happens so much in manga with the girl kissing the guy while he asleep or the guy randomly kissing the girl or the infamous “I won’t stop even if you beg” it really grinds my gears because I am so uncomfortable.
I hate it too, it's disgusting. Now, I totally understand if it's consensual and they tease each other in a loving manner. But this, this is just.. ew.
my manga pet peeve is these “sibling complexes.” they’re so weird. i remember watching spy x family with my parents and we got to yor’s brother, and as they don’t really watch anime, i really got to see just how wack it was. and then some series take it to creepy extremes
@@Insert_Creativity_Here I have all the spy family manga, and it wasn't "toned down" in the scenes with Yuri, but the manga at the end had a FULL PAGE of like Yuri about Yor
The big problem with the second trope (I'm gonna call it Beauty and the Beast Trope) is that it's not a good guideline for relationships in real life. "Oh, but I can change him-" do not marry a project! You don't marry somebody just because you think you can "fix them", you marry them for WHO they are and because you love them for that. If you think you have to "fix" a person in order for them to be something you want them to be, then that's a pretty good reason not to marry them. I know a person who has had this mindset for their marriage, and they've had to divorce three times with three different people.
I mean, in the Disney version it is a bit different. The beast fixes himself first before he even dates Belle, it's not really obvious at the first watch of the film, but it's indeed there
Or when they / the reader are supposed to feel bad for the mc being tortured, like I don't give a fuck if the mc broke into a house they're being beaten by the love interest
This might be a me thing, but my biggest gripe w Webtoon is when so many of the most trending/popular comics have the exact same generic anime art style. I get it's how they wanna draw, but I've seen incredibly cool and stylised comics and the potential is there for more, but most comics have that style and it's boring
@@yeethittter1285 And the title is always something like "reincarnated as the duke's dad's cousin's fiance" or "levelling up to become super strong but I'm already level 100".
You know a manga trend I can’t stand? In a lot of manga I’ve read it has this (usually) brother and sister who act like brothers and sisters, but then they find out they aren’t related by blood so the sister tries to go out with her brother but he’s not interested due to living 18 years with her as his sister. I’m okay with this, *But then a few years later the guy realises he loves the girl and they get married and I’m always like: Do you like her or not, WHAT ARE YOUR STANDARDS!? WHERE ARE YOUR PARENTS DURING THIS!?*
Or worse: When a guy adopts/becomes the guardian of a little girl, acts like a proper father towards her, but inexplicably they develop feelings for one another once she's an adult (or even an elder teen). 🤢 Usagi Drop and Hanyou no Yashahime come to mind here, and unfortunately, this, along with that "Onii-chan" trope, have made me leery whenever I see an older guy looking after a little girl in anime + manga...
@@voidbreather7405 This trope is the main reason I'm not touching Spy x Family until it ends, because this thing happens many times in the last chapter and out of nowhere too, I been burned too many times to trust any manga/anime that has adoption in it
@@CoolMagmar Loid isn't gonna fall for Anya 🤢. He obviously has feelings for his "fake" wife Yor, Yor also has obvious feelings towards him. He loves Anya but it definitely isn't like that, that's his kid. Yor also loves Anya. So I can't even fathom how anyone could fit that weird trope in this manga.
Random Coincidence: Wolfychu uploaded a video titled THE WORST TROPES IN ANIME" or something along those lines literally within the same minute, and I thought it was a two part collab because the coincidence seemed impossible lol.
The yaoi hands thing is so funny to me because I have the LITERAL EXACT OPPOSITE of that problem. In all my drawings everybody's just got teeny tiny hands, especially if they have long sleeves and I don't see their wrists.
the second trope is literally THE WORST, it was what kept me having a crush on my high school bully bc there'd be a time he'd be like, slightly less mean to me, and then I'd be like "omg he's changing 🥰🥰😍🥰😍🥰🥰🥰🥰" like no sis he gave you at least three insecurities get tf out of there, I literally only got over my crush on him after 4 YEARS when I met my first bf who made me realize I didn't need to beg to a bully when I had someone who was actually nice to me
my friend has the same situation with another toxic obnoxious dumbahh girl and even tho i kept telling her to leave and cut ties with her, stayed with her 3 times as she cried and vented to me abt her SHE STILL IS FRIENDS WITH HER?????????? she literally cant move on. im so frustrated but aight
With the last thing that’s why I really like when mangakas are able to publish a chapter twice a month, or once a month instead of weekly. I just feel it gives higher quality work, and really allows the creator a break
Yoshihiro Togashi kinda releases HxH chapters out of nowhere in certain Weekly Jump issues. He has his own schedule, and he suffers no consequences that I know of for the most part.
Yes, everyone needs time to chill and forget about work from time to time, and having new experiences can make their art much greater, even if not in the creative field you see your life changing from water to wine when your work lets you take real breaks
@@lordanubis1458 Sadly I think that’s partially due to medical issues brought on by the grueling schedule of the industry. His work is popular enough that he can work sporadically and still have a job but it cost him his health to get there.
Me if I were a mangaka and would like to do monthly I would say that monthly is a much more advantageous option for the artistic path I would like to follow, not that I want the weekly to end.
My pet peeve might be the main girl character whose only personality is being dumb and clumsy and everyone is like "omg she's so cute and perfect" or "I hate her but I still fell in love" when she's just not interesting, you could replace her with a fish it wouldn't change a thing.
I do have a soft spot for School Rumble, where this is done, because it's a straight up comedy, and everyone is dumb. The boy she likes is dumb. The boy that likes her is dumb. Her friends are dumb. Some are certainly smarter than others, and the main character is easily the dumbest, but when it comes down to wacky comedy, equal opportunity stupidity gets a pass from me.
I feel that the second trope is so frustrating to me because it's always the girl who's expected to be patient and deal with a guy's flaws, and the fact I haven't seen a version where a guy has to do the same for a girl makes it feel like the girl is expected to compromise everything for her relationship with a guy to work in these types of dynamics and I despise this mindset a lot. Both partners should be ready to make compromises, making one person do all the hard work to deal with you while you sit there with the same attitude and not bothering to change is so unhealthy both for you and your partner! I'd prefer to see a version where either it's the opposite for once, or that the girl gives up on the guy and he's explicitly aware it's due to his own actions so that he has to be the one to earn her trust back rather than the girl desperately trying to fix him even though the love interest is a total brat. Honestly this is one of the examples of why I can't enjoy romance in general and stopped seeking out much content related to it.
@hd_glow1911 this comment actually made me laugh cuz im imagining some faceless person looking out in the distance reminiscing on a haruhi x fem!reader (or fem!oc if that’s ur preference) fix it fic while whispering to the wind abt finding another one for someone else like it’s ur life goal. It’s both humorous and heartwarming 😂❤
This does exist but its mostly the yankee girl trope /gal trope where the guy is plain or nice and the girl is loud or pushy and demanding. I personally like this trope as im a fan of loud and outgoing people, Though I will warn you they are more on the ecchi side then soft romance.
Exactly, I always get so annoyed with FL cuz she's so soft spine-d and doesn't push back hard. She's always so "nice" and "caring". Like girl, throw some hands! Show the ML that this garbage isn't gonna fly anymore!
I HATE tropes when an adult adopts a child, becomes a teacher or foster parent for them, / because small children will even see their sisters/brothers as parents if they are the ones that take care of them/, then the child grows up and they fall in love with each other...people usually joke about this like "Haha, she raised a husband for herself," but this disgusts me.
Freaking Rin and Sesshomaru! 😡😡😡 I couldn't watch the new series JUST because of this. Why did they think it was a good idea??? I loved the idea of Sesshomaru being the adoptive father to Rin hell I even made characters based on the two. They HAD to go and ruin it. I HATE this trope no exceptions it's horrible
i personally love a stylized character against a super realistic background because the contrast is just so fun to me (especially in yotsuba& which is one of my fav mangas!) but i love stylized backgrounds all the same 😫😫
Talking about the backgrounds, one thing i really hate is when artists put a pattern on clothes or similar things and it's so obviously plastered on. No warping, Everything is evenly spaced, and it goes straight across the folds It's even worse when the pattern has grids/plaid or straight lines because it looks like they just ran a ruler across the character and called it done. Edit: also I'm talking about when it's not done well/part of the artstyle
Hey! Do you have any advice on what tools and techniques best to use in this kind of situation? I have a character who wears a plaid skirt and I really want her to look good but don't have enough time to draw it every time. Sorry if this is a bit long, I just like hearing advice straight from artists if I can't follow a tutorial 😅
About the second one, I want to see a manga where the love interest appears to be the most intimidating asshole known to man and then the protagonist talks to him and he’s actually a cinnamon roll. Like Tatsu from The Way of the Househusband :D
He Looks Like The Devil aka Kimi Ni Koishitei Desu Ka kinda fits that bill. A dude with a face so scary that no one wants to even be close to him. And he, being the absolute sweetest, is devised by this. It follows him and is attempts to get friends and his crush to like him back.
Ummm…the second trope is something that actually happened to me irl… I am a marshmallow. Soft to a fault. And I ended up in a very toxic relationship with a guy who would make me feel awful about myself under the guise of some alt instagram accounts, then swoop in as himself and defend me. All for his own entertainment and to lock me emotionally into that relationship. The only reason I agreed to be his girlfriend, despite knowing he wasn’t the best person and not actually “liking” him (at least not like that) was because I thought maybe I would develop feelings or that I could help him be better. I’m okay now. I cut it off years ago, but it was a very toxic and harmful situation and I kind of hate that it’s a trope in anime/manga. I legit didn’t know it was a trope til now, and I don’t know how I should feel about it…
Fellow survivor of the crusty dusty dudes, hope your life is happy and well now! Also, the "I can fix him" trope is a rampant and long-standing trope in Shoujo genre, it's been here for a long time and I'm not sure if it's gone yet...
mainly a webtoon thing: this is something i most commonly find in bl, but i personally hate it when it feels like the side couple gets more or equal amount of time as the main couple. i've completely dropped some comics because of this. i signed up for these two, not those two. those two are great, but i was told it would be abt these two. i also REALLY hate it when ppl remove glasses from a character completely. if your gonna give them contacts, give them their glasses back when they're at home or something. glasses are attractive too!
YES. I read a BL but then for a few chapters it was completely focused on the SIDE COUPLE which was STRAIGHT. Like I'm sorry, but if I want to read a straight romance, I'll do that but I came for the gay so please give me the gay. And to add to the glasses thing, I despise it when they make the person look 'ugly' with them and then they suddenly take it off and become a completely different person who is conventionally 'attractive.'
Something that bothers me a lot is when there are two siblings (usually sister and brother) that absolutely always act so kind to each other. They never argue and they call each other “little sis” or “big bro”. Like I know that siblings have strong bonds and everything, but that’s not how it ALWAYS has to go. It especially is not how it always is with my siblings. (Just my personal opinion)
Best sibling dynamic ever is Kazuma and Aqua from Konosuba, and they arent even siblings. They'll insult, yell, argue, make fun of, and bicker constantly but at the end of the day they have each other's back.
@@williammiller6330 we still argue though. It' just what happens when you spend a lot of time with someone, have shared property, and don't worry about being polite. Same thing with best friends.
I don't think My Little Monster (Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun) is a good example of the sweet girl falling for a terrible person trope. What I love about that manga/anime is that both the female mc and the male mc are flawed! Shizuku is antisocial and cold, Haru is aggressive and careless. They help each other become better people.
To me the biggest issue (didn't get to finish it sadly) was that Haru seemed neglected and possibly abused- he's not an asshole so much as he's deeply traumatized and doesn't seem to realize how dangerous some of his behavior is. Which, while making him sympathetic and in need of help- it also puts her at risk too. And it's played off as him being a quirky asshole she can fix and not like he's deeply troubled and needs a therapist not a gf. She doesn't inherently need to dump him but holy shit that would be a stipulation.
I feel similarly about Kyo and Tohru, especially since he really wasn’t a bad person just not wanting to connect with people because he was going to be sent away for life and overall being jealous of those who had a future
I'm not a fan of the background trope, but when it happened in Bocchi The Rock, I was dying of laughter seen these anime girls in an almost IRL music shop
Yeah in Bocchi it took me straight out of the story for a sec, but I think that was probably the intention. The series is spliced with jarring and comedic visuals the whole way through, feels like a sh*tpost at times. That's why I love it.
Bocchi nailed it. Also for example Gintama had some scenes like that - scene with real-life figures + voices or not-completely-made episode (without backgrounds, not coloured etc.) IMO that trope is fine if you know why it's like that and you know how to use it :3
Not sure if you ever read all of Fruits Basket, or only watched the 2001 anime adaptation, but trope #2 doesn't really apply to the relationship of Tohru and Kyo. Tohru doesn't love Kyo because she thinks she can "fix him". In fact, she's kind of intimidated by him at first. Because he's so loud and full of rage. Over time, she begins to see his softer side, and his other good qualities. She comes to see who he really is, and that's what causes her to eventually fall for him. She falls in love with all the good and all the bad. She loves him for who he is, not who he could be, or who she wants him to be. I would really recommend giving Fruits Basket another read if you never actually finished it before. Or watch the 2019 reboot which adapts the full manga story.
@@sffrsk they weren't saying their opinion was wrong, just that the trope doesn't really apply to Kyo and Tohru because he drastically changes over the course of the story, he is mean and harsh in the beginning but that's not excused, he softens greatly over the course of the story and by the end he never raises his voice at Tohru or any of the cast unless they're like fucking Akito. The problem with that trope is definitely the toxicity and I think the only time it works is when that toxicity is addressed and the person grows and changes and STOPS the toxic behavior-which Kyo does. But as Lavender pointed out, they're just sensitive to the trope and that's why they don't like even Kyo and Tohru and that's valid lmao everyone's valid for their opinion, op was just explaining Kyo and Tohru are not true criminals of the trope like Hana Yori Dango or Maid Sama or that one Wolf girl anime
@@ariannebrodeur But it DOES apply. Because that's the definition of the trope in question. A highly toxic guy becomes "softer over time because of girl" which Kyo is/does. Sure she doesn't do it to "fix him" but the series of events is basically step by step hence why it's a trope. My other issue with it is how cliche it is. Also, Yuki's "son love" towards her feels so weirdly out of place for me. It felt like it was done more for the fans than what the mangaka truly wanted. -- But that's my opinion.
I mean she said that she knows it doesn't really count but she's so acutely aware of thing that could be related to the trope that she didn't like it regardless.
I was also thinking “nooo” when she mentioned kyo and tohru(kyo and tohru’s friends were my favorite characters), although I will say I don’t think romance was the strongest point of the story. The romances have sweet moments, but the characters making it out of the story living happier lives despite all the drama they went through is definitely the best part.
On the issue of artist overwork, specifically manga magazines publishing on time: I don't know anything about the industry, but let's say an artist is working back-breaking hours to provide a chapter a week so the magazine can publish weekly (like I said, I know nothing about the hours or publishing schedule. This is just as an example). Say the magazine needs to publish chapters from 5 different artists every week to fill enough pages. Instead of having one artist publish every week, they could hire another artist and have both of them publish every other week. So, this week's imaginary Shounen Jump has the newest Naruto and the next week has the newest One Piece to allow for a better work-life balance for the Naruto artists. No, they don't get as frequent updates from their big hitters and that could hurt reader retention. But it drastically expands the life of the manga because the people working on it are no longer literally dying. This also provides an opportunity to feature more new and undiscovered artists to fill in those slots. Now, I can see them arguing, "If we have to hire another artist, that costs money we could spend on artists we already have!" My answer is: You will not go bankrupt, become homeless, and die if you take your profits and reallocate just a little bit of those profits to ensuring your artists aren't literally dying because you're a greedy bastard.
That's a great argument! Unfortunately, capitalism. Nowadays, workers are nothing but tools. You don't stock up on tools in advance, only replace them once they've broken
To my knowledge there are manga artists who work a few chapters ahead of publishing. If that were the standard I think that would probably allow for more artists to care for their health. That's what I would hope for anyway. Knowing the way big industries are, they will find a way to keep pushing it to be unhealthy even if you're working ahead of publishing.
Point #2: my biggest issue with getting into Nagatoro. I understand she is a tsundere bully and slowly grows over time, but I CANNOT stand bully/victim "romance" tropes. That poor boy. My husband, though, is obsessed with the story.
Nagatoro goes too far in teasing, sure, and then you look at her friends and family and go "oh they all have really thick skin and this doesn't bother them". Senpai, on the other hand, has gotten tired of being bullied and just closes himself off to the point that he can't remember faces and assumes that anyone who doesn't ignore him is going to bully him. He's overly sensitive. The story isn't so much about a bully and a victim falling in love as much as a girl learning where people's boundaries are and a guy loosing his victim complex. It's also both of them learning to be honest and actually go for what they want
Honestly i feel like looking more into Kyo reveals why him and tohru are an exception to the trope. Like he's angry and mean because he doesn't want to connect to people, bc he knows he's gonna lose all of it really soon. Tohru realizes that and digs into his true, softer self. She helps him with his trauma and in return he becomes a better person and helps her with her own. i feel like that's the relationship between her and every other Sohma member tho lol
Spoilers for fruits basket… I also believe he’s rude to Tohru was because he knew her mom and the two were friends and he felt as thought he let Tohru’s mom die and that her mom doesn’t forgive him making him want to put a great distance between himself and Tohru because of the guilt he is feeling.
That mangaka schedule is just the saddest thing. Imagine your Monday consisting of 21 hours of work with only a few hours for sleep and food squeezed in there. I could never.
I am really glad you shed some light into the life of manga artists! I definitely feel like that is something that doesn’t get talked about as much as it should
The background thing happens in a lot of romance webcomics too, especially webtoon! It’s usually in a generic anime art style with a lot of same face characters in school settings and you can tell the artists used Clip studio because there’s a ton of 3D assets that’s just plastered in the backgrounds with no attempts at making it match the style XD it’s so easy to spot too!
Worst trope on the planet: Not like other girls. It’s the stupidest trope and as someone who actually wasn’t like other people, you’re only ostracized by others for that. It’s the stupidest thing ever conceived because by design the main character is almost always exactly like every girl reading the book. On the bright side, I did know one girl in high school who wasn’t like the others in a good way. She had down syndrome but never let that stop her. In fact, she not only was one of the sweetest girls in the school, she was also one of the most popular girls too. I’d love to follow someone like that in fiction, but instead I only get self insert Karens who insist that they, sorry “she”, isn’t like other girls because she’s “nice.”
This! Also the lowkey sexism of that trope too like the implication that it's some how wrong to act like "other" girls and just assumes that girls are a monolith that all act the same instead of being completely separate individual people with their own unique personalities
The not like other girls trope is not only flawed but rooted in sexism but ableism as well: The main girl can different but not TOO different (being blind, being deaf, having a mental illness, missing a limb, etc) So not only is it sexist but lowkey ableist. She can be different but in "cute, quirky uwu" way. It's kinda a cop out form the story writers too
@@SqualorOpera its because most writers are guys who THINK they know ladies and thus they can right them. Good writers ask for input form the type of demographic they wanna right about or do research. You cant just crack an egg and expect eggs benedict to appear
I think the weak overly nice shojo lead is actually subverted in Fruits Basket... I watched the remake as my first exposure to the series for the first time last year thinking that I'm too old for it, but it was really refreshing to see. I like how they actually gave Tohru a relatable reason for being a push over. "If I stop smiling for even a second, I might start crying and not be able to stop." Girl has trauma. All of the Sohmas can relate to that, but I think that Kyo's experience compliments Tohru's the best. This is just my opinion though! I love your videos
1.) It bothers me, too; it could work if it was made cartoony, and the body... gave off an overall loopy shape, like if the character looked more like a lava lamp than a human. 2.) Either tell the story of how he makes it up to her and his path to being a better person--don't make abuse too lighthearted--or simply make him a tsundere who's not too abusive. 3.) I don't mind it too much so long as it's not just stock photography, but I like your point about personalization. 4.) Yeah, that's obviously bad, thank you for addressing that. I guess if one is an avid manga reader with loyalty toward a series, don't get mad if it isn't out... have a patience that's made known, and maybe just be ready to read it when it does come out.
Homestuck does the background-photo-but-build-off-of-it thing really well. Some of the backgrounds, especially shots of detailed areas like Prospit and Derse are collages of real buildings stuck together and then it has a colour filter over it. That contrasts with the extremely stylized character designs in a really interesting way
One of the common manga tropes that's become a bigger thorn in my side over time is the dirty old man. I know there are some really beloved ones out there like Master Roshi but when they pop up and are basically given free reign to harass peoplem, especially young women, for the sake of a joke it just really rubs me the wrong way. If they're introduced at all I much prefrer it to be for them to receive a comeuppance.
Omg yes the old perverted sensei trop is so over did and just make em so uncomfortable They're just SA the characters but it's ok cause it's for "humor"
I agree with your third pet peeve a lot, and that’s why I probably love the toilet bound hanako mhm series. Both the anime and manga have a lot of stylization, giving it personality while the anime tends to have even more details in terms of shading and coloring!
6:45 I think Inio Asano’s work is a good example of that “in-between” process. He explained how the background pic is edited in several ways, in addition to details, that make the scene feels integrated.
3:00 ooh, I've been reading a manga with a reverse on this trope. The fucked up one is the girl, and normal in love person is the guy. But it's less "I can fix her!" and more "She's fucked up and doesn't love me but that's fine." Manga is "What Do You Call This Trash," or Kono Gomi o Nanto Yobu
I don't know if this is very common but I feel like it's worth mentioning "Andrew syndrome" when a male love interest is disproportionately large in a borderline creepy but mostly comedic way named after me and my housemates having a strange moments of unity while hysterically laughing at a screenshot of akko and Andrew from lwa and later the ex boyfriend page 9 of tbhk sure if I had a nickel for every time this happened I would only have 2 nickels but it's weird that it happened twice
8:06 I get where you are coming from. Personally, with certain manga- when the story has a deep connection with places in real life, but is able to encorporate them into the plot, that’s what I like about some of that. But at the same time I see where you are coming from. Imo- JJK does rlly well with the incorporation of backgrounds from irl. Especially since Jujustu Kaisen has a lot to do with history in Japan in general. (And there’s also the fact that there’s more attention put on the fight scenes.)
3:50 The way you drew the guy character reminded me of my character Toren. The funny part is he's also a very angsty threat to humanity... But so is his girlfriend, Kallista. They're both kinda jerks, and they can't stand each other when they act certain ways (Like Kallista being a flirtatious and mischievous little gremlin) but they love each other.
My current biggest pet peeve seems to be specific to MHA, which is how the clothing of a lot of the girls either gets destroyed when they use more of their power, or they have to remove their clothes to fully utilize their quirk. As a result, my fan OC for the series specifically goes against this. It's 3 people who are registered as, and pretending to be, just 1 hero named Ninja, and each have a different quirk. The first one needs her clothes in order to fully utilize her quirk, because part of it specifically affects her hair and her clothes; she calls it Chameleon, and it lets her climb walls and blend into environments, the latter of which is done by changing the colors and patterns on her hair and clothes. The second one's quirk, Ghostly, lets her levitate and phase through solid inanimate matter, but she can bring solid inanimate matter with her at no extra cost, like her clothes. The third one is technically already not wearing any clothes, but you wouldn't know it just by looking, because their quirk, Shapeshifting, can copy the looks of anything they've seen and any voice they've heard, which includes the target's clothes; despite all 3 ending up looking identical most of the time, the third one's original form isn't a girl.
I'm glad that altho we all have our own critiques for types of media we enjoy like manga, the worst thing to pretty much everybody I've seen talk about them is the way the creators in these fields are treated. I'm really glad that so many people are talking about it.
The 2nd trope has fostered a lot of younger readers to look for relationships that aren't healthy for them, it's so painful to realise that a genre made for young girls is often filled with stereotypical abusive relationships. I wonder past all these years, did the Shoujo genre as a whole move towards healthier views or is it still the same?
6:05 well that makes more sense. My whole life I thought there was some ancient sacred way to draw background with detail and speed. Technically I was right
Tip for hand proportions (this is probably really obvious but it took me a while to catch on to): 1. The fingers should not be noticeably longer than the palm ( I've been told I have long fingers and they're almost the same length so unless it's intentional don't push it) 2. The length from finger to wrist is a little longer than the distance from chin to eyebrows ( you can check for yourself)
I think a way to fix the 2nd trope would be to make the boy more likeable. If i've learned anything about writing from my mom who's a writer, it's that you want to make characters that are rough around the edges still likeable if they're not hardcore villians, otherwise it won't nearly as be enjoyable to read.
In one manga i actually love the background are amazingly drawn, but the sky is literally just a photo with no edits made, just a photo clipped in there XD
😂 "Crust Dusty" I dieeed... But when it comes to manga tropes- the only ones that really really get to me are the massively over sized breasts or literally non-existent breasts. It drives me crazy
@@crowzy_crowz Right? I know in a lot of new-age manga people have started making more diverse characters, but it's still super common and over used 😅 and honestly if they were proportionate to the bodies it wouldn't be so bad, but they always have tiny wastes
I find this type of video really interesting and in a way helpful, in the sens that they prevent some people from falling into these tropes so thank you for providing amazing content for us, LavenderTowne!
I was literally just typing that tohru and kyo were a good subversion of that trope and that while its there i thought it was really well executed when you brought them up lol
I have a tendency to draw hands inconsistently… my selection of hand designs is, chibi stubby, inkling fry fingers and it’s partner in crime octoling pizza fingers, *b* *a* *l* *l* *h* *a* *n* *d* *s* , ‘who let the goth touch the crayons’ and no hands at all! Then I randomly choose some characters to have the tips of their fingers dyed in black, purple, and red…
I do a sorta modified version of the 'I can take the demon out of him' type trope. For example, the stereotypical bully'd be tall, he'd have darker type hair color and eyes, black/gray or bland clothing unless there's a uniform going against that, etc. I accidentally made my bully the opposite of that while aiming to keep some features on him. Another thing is that the bullied schoolgirl is a tall guy who quite literally forces (bully guy) to bond. That biatch ain't gonna get away from his affection any time soon lmao
About your second pet peeve... I completely understand, and it's up to personal preference of course! I do think that in Fruits Basket Kyou's anger is mostly due to how he was treated as a child and is presented as something he needs to learn to let go of. And that's the case for a lot of characters from Sohma family, they all have something that they need to overcome (due to their curse). Kyou is much more chill in later chapters, as he meets more people from "real world" and learns how to behave properly.
Yup, but Kyo doesn't hurt Tohru on purpose. He has anger issues but he never hated Tohru. Don't think they were the best example to show the trope since he was never possessive over her.
2:41 i personally like when it's swapped, so that you have this kitten-saving, cookie-baking, couldn't-hurt-a-fly boy and then you just have MRS MURDER MCMURDERSON
The biggest pet peeve I have with a manga trope is the "tsundere" character and their love interest that they don't like, where the tsundere character is mean and nasty, and just an overall bully to their "love interest" and the love interest just takes it because they "love them" and they're too nice to leave them. And it's not until a third person comes in and starts showing a genuine interest that the tsundere character even cares about them and then gets mad because they feel a sort of entitlement to them.
Personally, I like the second one but I like it when it's the ray of sunshine and adorable bebe and the "I will commit arson on your home if you hurt my gf/bf," I find it adorable tbh
5:50 That's a manga trope? I thought that was just what you did. I do it all the time in my drawings. I like to take photos too so it's a natural step I thought.
Even though the second trope is very annoying and overused, it's the one trope that I relate to the most. I keep developing crushes on people who are very rude to me and I wish I could have a crush that is actually a kind person for once. If so, maybe I wouldn't get hurt all the time by the people I love.😖
That would actually be an interesting story. A girl constantly with the I can fix it mentality constantly trying to date people who are horrible to her getting hurt and thinking it's her fault. And her journey realizing she's not the problem and she should find friends and partners who value her for that possibly finding love a long the way....damn that be great. Sorry for using your struggles as writing fuel tho- I hope you find people who genuinely care for you.

My biggest manga pet peeve is when a character is supposed to be 'absolute gorgeous, beyond anyone else' and then every other character with lines looks just as good as they do. It really annoys me
this ^ my exception to this rule is teruhashi kokomi from saiki k though, because that's her character and the story uses it for comedic effect

Even if you ever managed to ""fix"" them, if that's all you wanted to do then what other appeal is left in the relationship
“i can change him!!” girl is he a tampon?? 😭😭😭
@fei "I can fix him!!!" girl is he a piece of furniture🥲
I would love to see a similar video about western comics or WEBTOONs, since they've got a plethora of issues too.
Especially considering the vast majority of Webtoons I've seen have either been romance or have some romantic subplot shoehorned in.
This might be a me thing, but my biggest gripe w Webtoon is when so many of the most trending/popular comics have the exact same generic anime art style. I get it's how they wanna draw, but I've seen incredibly cool and stylised comics and the potential is there for more, but most comics have that style and it's boring

Yes, everyone needs time to chill and forget about work from time to time, and having new experiences can make their art much greater, even if not in the creative field you see your life changing from water to wine when your work lets you take real breaks
for sure, that kind of stuff is always so much better. like jibaku shounen hanako kun for example

It's the only trope I disagree with, though I'll kudos a lot more to artists who make it from scratch.

So sorry you had to deal with a major narcissist. What a pos.

mainly a webtoon thing: this is something i most commonly find in bl, but i personally hate it when it feels like the side couple gets more or equal amount of time as the main couple. i've completely dropped some comics because of this. i signed up for these two, not those two. those two are great, but i was told it would be abt these two.
i also REALLY hate it when ppl remove glasses from a character completely. if your gonna give them contacts, give them their glasses back when they're at home or something. glasses are attractive too!
You can really tell that whoever writes sibling characters like that is definitely an only child
Best sibling dynamic ever is Kazuma and Aqua from Konosuba, and they arent even siblings. They'll insult, yell, argue, make fun of, and bicker constantly but at the end of the day they have each other's back.
Just because a lot of siblings are rude or whatever, doesn't mean every sibling does. That's idiotic.
@@williammiller6330 we still argue though. It' just what happens when you spend a lot of time with someone, have shared property, and don't worry about being polite. Same thing with best friends.
That was literally me and my brother lol but we barely ever talked so it makes sense
Frfr!!
Yeah, I think she might have used the wrong anime as an example? Or maybe she just didn't watch it or misunderstood it?
nooo theyre really not like that because they both grow onto each other and work to fix each others' most glaring flaws.
Bocchi the rock artists has mastered the art of media mixing and decided to meme the heck out of it
Bocchi nailed it.
@xinniii Nothing wrong with writing a paragraph in disagreement of someone else's opinion. That's what the comments section is for my guy
I binge watched the entirety of the ‘do this not that’ series today… so you can probably guess how excited I was to see a new upload 😭😭
I don't really know how it normally works, but that sounds like a good idea!
@@VerticalForklift I can see the same thing happening to video game developers at Activision and VFX team at Marvel
Capitalism at it's finest :D
Point #2: my biggest issue with getting into Nagatoro. I understand she is a tsundere bully and slowly grows over time, but I CANNOT stand bully/victim "romance" tropes. That poor boy. My husband, though, is obsessed with the story.
I mean, It actually gets kinda wholesmo
Nagatoro goes too far in teasing, sure, and then you look at her friends and family and go "oh they all have really thick skin and this doesn't bother them". Senpai, on the other hand, has gotten tired of being bullied and just closes himself off to the point that he can't remember faces and assumes that anyone who doesn't ignore him is going to bully him. He's overly sensitive. The story isn't so much about a bully and a victim falling in love as much as a girl learning where people's boundaries are and a guy loosing his victim complex. It's also both of them learning to be honest and actually go for what they want
@@captLizzie well explained
I mean the entire thing is a fetish manga, plus she's younger than him and they're just young in general too
Honestly i feel like looking more into Kyo reveals why him and tohru are an exception to the trope.
Spoilers for fruits basket…
I also believe he’s rude to Tohru was because he knew her mom and the two were friends and he felt as thought he let Tohru’s mom die and that her mom doesn’t forgive him making him want to put a great distance between himself and Tohru because of the guilt he is feeling.
The second trope 100% fills me with paralyzing anger 💀
That mangaka schedule is just the saddest thing. Imagine your Monday consisting of 21 hours of work with only a few hours for sleep and food squeezed in there. I could never.
8:19 ah yhes, my favorite trope, abuse of enployees
AHAHAHAHA
The not like other girls trope is not only flawed but rooted in sexism but ableism as well:
The main girl can different but not TOO different (being blind, being deaf, having a mental illness, missing a limb, etc)
So not only is it sexist but lowkey ableist. She can be different but in "cute, quirky uwu" way. It's kinda a cop out form the story writers too
Ugh I hate that trope. “I’m not like the other girls!” Why tho? Other girls are great. Let yourself hang out with girls, bestie, you aren’t above it.
@@SqualorOpera its because most writers are guys who THINK they know ladies and thus they can right them. Good writers ask for input form the type of demographic they wanna right about or do research. You cant just crack an egg and expect eggs benedict to appear
Ugh you’re 100% right, that’s the best take I’ve seen on this topic. Also, love the analogy.
2:36 "I'll protect you kitten" ahh relationship
Finally, the pet peevee trio is done.
Eevee
@@7YearsSinceSilksongTrailer yes. Mangeon, carteon, and uh... arteon? I forgot the other pet peeve video.
haha pee
I think the weak overly nice shojo lead is actually subverted in Fruits Basket... I watched the remake as my first exposure to the series for the first time last year thinking that I'm too old for it, but it was really refreshing to see. I like how they actually gave Tohru a relatable reason for being a push over. "If I stop smiling for even a second, I might start crying and not be able to stop." Girl has trauma. All of the Sohmas can relate to that, but I think that Kyo's experience compliments Tohru's the best. This is just my opinion though! I love your videos
I like fruits basket it's really well done. And tbh everyone has trauma there and just trying to be better
2:55 OH NO I’m writing a wlw romance and I just realized my two characters have this kind of dynamic 😭
Don't overthink it and keep going :)
its more fun if its gay
that's my fave trope in wlw stories, dw!
Why not have them work each other to fix their flaws. It'd be cute, and they could grow closer 🤗 😊
@@beelzebub6414 they're an asshole, doesn't matter their sexuality
It’s really sad that a lot of manga artists are overworked, especially if they aren’t being paid well for how much time they’ve sacrificed
I have never seen this Yaoi hands trope and it now freaks me out to death
Now I know why I should draw my hands to normal scale 😂
Omg yes the old perverted sensei trop is so over did and just make em so uncomfortable
They're just SA the characters but it's ok cause it's for "humor"
I hate the perverted sensei trope and the ugly bastard trope ((Please for the love god don't ask me how I know about ugly bastard))
I agree with your third pet peeve a lot, and that’s why I probably love the toilet bound hanako mhm series. Both the anime and manga have a lot of stylization, giving it personality while the anime tends to have even more details in terms of shading and coloring!
Can we just appreciate how much love and time lavendertowne puts into all her videos ❤
But it's less "I can fix her!" and more "She's fucked up and doesn't love me but that's fine."
Manga is "What Do You Call This Trash," or Kono Gomi o Nanto Yobu
I don't know if this is very common but I feel like it's worth mentioning "Andrew syndrome" when a male love interest is disproportionately large in a borderline creepy but mostly comedic way named after me and my housemates having a strange moments of unity while hysterically laughing at a screenshot of akko and Andrew from lwa and later the ex boyfriend page 9 of tbhk
sure if I had a nickel for every time this happened I would only have 2 nickels but it's weird that it happened twice
The more you talk about manga, the more I learn about tropey stuff that shows up in it. I own one manga and I need more of them
8:06 I get where you are coming from.
6:12 As a time saving measure, posturizing IRL photos for backgrounds is still better than AI generated ones *cough*DOG AND BOY*cough*
I LOVE THE LITTLE CUTE ANIMATION THINGIES U DO AT THE INTRO
3:50 The way you drew the guy character reminded me of my character Toren. The funny part is he's also a very angsty threat to humanity... But so is his girlfriend, Kallista. They're both kinda jerks, and they can't stand each other when they act certain ways (Like Kallista being a flirtatious and mischievous little gremlin) but they love each other.
your art style is so cute and expressive it's very inspiring
Omg they are so cool!
How did they meet
I don't remember anyone's clothes getting destroyed? Thats sounds more like a One Piece thing

The “;D” in the 2:00 speech bible took me out for some reason
ASDFGHJKL
Your drawing of the girl character at the second drawing made me think of Tohru Honda and then you bring her and Kyo up AHHHHHH
I'm glad that altho we all have our own critiques for types of media we enjoy like manga, the worst thing to pretty much everybody I've seen talk about them is the way the creators in these fields are treated. I'm really glad that so many people are talking about it.
I dunno, I kinda think the blended photography vibe is kinda neat and stylish
I was looking for this comment (took a while to find it)
The 2nd trope has fostered a lot of younger readers to look for relationships that aren't healthy for them, it's so painful to realise that a genre made for young girls is often filled with stereotypical abusive relationships. I wonder past all these years, did the Shoujo genre as a whole move towards healthier views or is it still the same?
Lavendertowne’s art is what taught me to draw. I always watch her vids when drawing and it gives me so much motivation.
6:05 well that makes more sense. My whole life I thought there was some ancient sacred way to draw background with detail and speed. Technically I was right
Tip for hand proportions (this is probably really obvious but it took me a while to catch on to):
1. The fingers should not be noticeably longer than the palm ( I've been told I have long fingers and they're almost the same length so unless it's intentional don't push it)
2:06 this legit made me think of Reigen from Mob Psycho 100 meets his fans
0:42 hold up- WAS THAT BOKU NO PICO?!
I knew I reconized that art style
No
In one manga i actually love the background are amazingly drawn, but the sky is literally just a photo with no edits made, just a photo clipped in there XD
😂 "Crust Dusty" I dieeed... But when it comes to manga tropes- the only ones that really really get to me are the massively over sized breasts or literally non-existent breasts. It drives me crazy
the oversized breasts trope infuriates the shit outta me
@@crowzy_crowz Right? I know in a lot of new-age manga people have started making more diverse characters, but it's still super common and over used 😅 and honestly if they were proportionate to the bodies it wouldn't be so bad, but they always have tiny wastes
@@WallflowerIncStreet fr! one of my favorite animes one piece has this problem!
I find this type of video really interesting and in a way helpful, in the sens that they prevent some people from falling into these tropes
so thank you for providing amazing content for us, LavenderTowne!
2:23 who wants a manga where the guy is a threat to everyone but his lover who he treats super nicely?
Agreed on the last one. Especially given the manga artist does EVERYTHING themselves, while your basic euro/USA comic has a whole team doing it.
it’s a great day, which means our favorite RUclipsr and artist will post! ❤
“These shovels for hands” IM CRYING
I was literally just typing that tohru and kyo were a good subversion of that trope and that while its there i thought it was really well executed when you brought them up lol
Fun fact: Wolfychu uploaded a worst anime tropes like 5 seconds after this
I’ve been watching her a lot today😂
i thought they collabed or smth lol
i just came from that!!
wait what both are 44 minutes ago
*_gasp_*
I have a tendency to draw hands inconsistently… my selection of hand designs is, chibi stubby, inkling fry fingers and it’s partner in crime octoling pizza fingers, *b* *a* *l* *l* *h* *a* *n* *d* *s* , ‘who let the goth touch the crayons’ and no hands at all! Then I randomly choose some characters to have the tips of their fingers dyed in black, purple, and red…
omg two videos so close to each other thank you!
I love your videos. I'm a big fan of manga and anime and you, so I love these videos! Thank you ❤️
I do a sorta modified version of the 'I can take the demon out of him' type trope.
The second trope you described is what I call a reverse Tsundere.
Yup, but Kyo doesn't hurt Tohru on purpose. He has anger issues but he never hated Tohru. Don't think they were the best example to show the trope since he was never possessive over her.
@@shireenrazak7160 I did not know about that... thank you for sharing this to me.
Yes! I've been waiting for this! Great work :)
That’s literally the genderbent version of trope 2 Lavendertowne mentioned, I just realized
Personally, I like the second one but I like it when it's the ray of sunshine and adorable bebe and the "I will commit arson on your home if you hurt my gf/bf," I find it adorable tbh
And when the ray of sunshine is a guy and the nuclear person is a gal
5:50 That's a manga trope? I thought that was just what you did. I do it all the time in my drawings. I like to take photos too so it's a natural step I thought.
she combined two things i love: her vids, and manga :D
i think the second one can be done well but its hard for a lot of people to pull off imo
0:21 that is actually terrifying and also reminds me of Wilbur Soot lol
I really hate it when a character is nice, perfect, gentle, and a complete pushover. -and is extremely oblivious
Oyasumi Pun Pun's backgrounds work to make Pun Pun stand out. He's a cartoon bird thing in the real world.
If don’t want a couple like that 2:48 read spy x family
I’ve been called out for being a bad anime trope!💀
The “I can see the good in him” girl. Looks like me irl, even that hand gesture.🤣
“Palm my head like a basketball” is such a funny quote to come out of this video!
