  • If there's one convertible everyone can agree on, it's the Mk1 Volkswagen Cabriolet. This week we're driving this well-kept 1987 VW Cabrio to see why everyone loves this cheerful little car.

    A good friend of the channel reached out to us a while ago asking if we'd like to feature their 1987 Volkswagen Cabriolet which we saw years back at the 2019 Oblivion 80's & 90's Car & Culture Show that took place at Ontario Place in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Of course, we said! With the nice weather rapidly ending we knew we only had a short window to get this episode filmed. We go over the important information about the first generation VW Cabriolet, along with some tidbits of info we didn't know ourselves about how this vehicle was made and where it fits into the Mk1 Golf timeline.
    Our example here is about as original as it can get, aside from an aftermarket radio, this Cabriolet is 126,000 kms of pure OEM Volkswagen charm. Bought from the original owner in 2018, the current owner has put about 40,000 kms onto this vehicle including some serious long-distance road trips. Aside from a small odometer issue noted on the drive over to film, which ended up working again during our road test, this Cabriolet hasn't had any issues, and the owner ensures all the preventative maintenance gets done on it.
    We take this 1987 Volkswagen Cabriolet with the 5 speed manual on an in-town road test to talk about a couple key points, specifically how a large person such as myself might be able to fit in a vehicle of this size, along with how functional the vehicle actually is because of that. We go over our driving impressions including the ride and comfort, and how the 4 cylinder 90 horsepower engine fares in 2022. Since we're driving a 36 year old car, we want to talk directly to the type of people who're in the market to buy something like this, and discuss some of the things you need to consider if you're looking at a Mk1 Cabriolet.
    After we roll back in from our drive we go over our classic car buyer's guide segment, a critical step in any potential buyer's journey to Cabrio ownership. We discuss the common problems and issues related to the Mk1 Golf and Cabriolet, along with some things to look out for specifically with this vehicle. There are some good things about this car that make it a very compelling sell to enthusiasts and casual drivers alike, which is why this is such a popular convertible the world over.

    I owned a 1988 VW Cabriolet (red with white top and interior) brand new when I lived in SoCal. I was a skinny 26 year old blonde in a red convertible - I got a LOT of attention. That car was so much fun to drive! I loved it! ❤

      One of the reasons I think these are so popular, they're good first project cars for a lot of people who want to be able to work on their cars themselves.

    I looked 2 years ago.. they were not worth considering for work needed. Then, decided to check out later Cabrio models. Sold! Found a 2000, garaged, maintenance all up yo date, top is perfect, new timing belt.. just AC compressor dead. Feels more solid and easier to live with daily. Little things; like power door locks, power trunk, safety from more rigid chassis and air bags. Love all the VW Verts.

    Referring to your comment about the stiffer ride, it's due to the cabriolets coming with the same suspension as the GTI.

    You're spot on about rust. If there's rust on the car body then very likely there's more serious rust underneath.

    1:13 it's pretty much the norm with Volkswagen and this type of car. For example, while they released the MK4 Golf hatchback and wagon in 1997/1998, they kept the old MK3 cabriolet and just changed the front end to resemble the rest of the MK4 lineup. The only noticeable change in the interior was the steering wheel.

      I think Mercedes-Benz and BMW has done this also, but usually just for a couple years at most, not an entire generation. It was really interesting to learn about this, I didn't know much about the Cabrio before but I feel much better equipped now.

    I bought new a 1990 white on white on white wheels (and I am a guy) lol. It was "the look" in the late 80/s and early 90/s lots of cars were doing the all white but the Cabriolet unknown to me was considered a "girly" car but I did not know the difference. I loved it. Mine at that year I think was the first with power windows and an air bag. I did not really even want the power windows but what bothered me most was it lost the vent windows they became permanent, you could not open them. However I did have A/C and I am a Houstonian and it is HOT AND HUMID. So, even tho we rode around all summer with the top down we had the air blasting too as foolish as it may sound. We really did not care we were young, fit , shirts off, playing tennis. A rain storm would come out of nowhere and we would run to the car to put the MANUAL top up. LOL good times.
    Drove it all over TEXAS to all the main cities for Tennis Tournaments. Then took my little brother to California, San Diego/LA Disneyland on Spring Break. A time when you could take that drive, was straight down interstate 10 until just into Cali, take Interstate 8 and straight to San DIego a 24 hour drive. Never had one single water leak, the car was ONE of the more quiiet cars I ever owned even owning more prmium cars since.
    Fun time, great car, did not keep it too long, maybe nearly 2 years and moved on to other things. It was a memorable time and a memorable car in my life, one of the most exciting buys out of all the cars I have owned.

    Hi all, I have an 86 Cabriolet 3-speed auto wolfsburg that recently started dying on me and I'm turning to good old RUclips community to see if you have any idea of what the issue could be. The car died a number of more times after driving in neighborhoods for about an hour. After some time driving, the car begins to give a low oil pressure on the gauge and it would experience lowest pressure when the car was driving too slow or idle, and this would be at the same times that the car would die, without any shakes or jerks. The oil levels are good and clean. And there doesn’t seem to be an electrical or fuel problem based off of how easy the car starts back up again. When I accelerate the oil shows good amount of pressure but there are times when the pressure bounces from low to high and prevents the car from giving full acceleration before giving a jerk of power. I luckily was able to park the car at a jiffy lube after a few sudden engine stops where a worker there had suggested a possible issue with the oils pressure pump (either it broke or something in it needs fixing), which seems to make sense when I think about it more, but I don’t have the best knowledge about this to be sure. Anyone have this same issue before and what was your culprits?

    A vast majority that I've seen are manual.
    Where are you finding all these mk1 automatics..?

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  Год назад +1

      About half the ones I see for sale here are automatic, and many of the manuals around were converted from autos.

    • @Zhagg1
      @Zhagg1 Год назад

      @PRN_TestDrive I'm surprised. The auto cost a decent premium to get back then, and everyone knew how to drive manual.
      Even trying to find auto transmissions is difficult, which should be easy if everyone's converting auto to manual. I would presume, at least.
      Great vid!
