  • Today I drive a 1973 Volkswagen Beetle, a 1988 Volkswagen Cabriolet and a 1995 Volkswagen Cabrio to see which classic VW convertible is truly the one to choose for me! Your results may vary but I hope it's at least informative enough to help you choose or dream about having your own!

    I've got a Beetle and a Golf Mk3 Cabrio, a friend of mine has a Beetle and a Mk2 Cabrio. We're both 20 and often go to shows or drives. Safe to say, all of them are a joy to drive. Absolutely lovely

    I bought a 92 cabriolet a year back after watching your review video and a year on of daily-ing (and fixing it oh god) it's been incredible. I'm truly in love with the way it drives and handles. Slinging it through windy California roads in the summer to the beach is just unmatched. Despite its age and work I've put into it (previous owner didnt take great care of it) it's a well built machine that holds up to the enthusiast feel of the "driving experience" which is a term that gets thrown around a lot. A term I never quite understood until I drove this thing over the mountains, into the valleys, and through the city streets having an absolute blast. It's just a pure joy and I thank you for getting me into it!

      That’s amazing! I’m so glad to hear you’re enjoying it! Was it the review of my black one you watched then? I like the 92, those last few years of Cabriolets are some of my favourite with slightly upgraded interiors and I find more power! I hope it continues to be a good car for you! The way they turn in and cruise around is just something special

    You just can't beat the feel of a Mk1. One reason I love the Cabriolet is I could get a later year MK1, also a German built MK1, verse the US built rabbits. I have had several in the last, almost 30 years, as well as a ton of other VWs. My current 1992 Wolfsburg Cabby it getting fitted with a 1.8t (AWP) upgraded turbo and a tune. Already has big brakes and a better suspension and while it not the smoothest ride it corners like its on rails. Something else VW did was the Cabriolet has a much stiffer chassis to compensate for the roof this really helps the handling as well.

    I have an unhealthy obsession with all three! I currently have a mk3 exactly like this one with mods and I can’t wait to see you do the 07k five cylinder swap. I would love an 88 just like the one you have here.

    Are you putting a 2.5 engine in the Cabrio? The 2.0 is also great, super reliable.. I’m curious about how it goes! Good engines. I looked at several Cabrios and Cabriolets. In the end, a 2000 Cabrio was a much more livable car. Its only further grown on me, too. Cool Test. I once owned a 75 Vert, btw. I recall the rear end sliding easily in a corner in wet conditions. Scary.

    • @200degrees
      @200degrees  Год назад +2

      Yea a 2.5 5 cylinder. It’ll be a good bump in power without hopefully loosing reliability. There’s a kit to put it in. I love the 2.0, but I want a little more kick haha
      Cool that you’ve owned such a variety!

      @@200degrees Definitely curious. 2.5 is a great engine. I’m also curious if the recent Turbo 1.5 has been used in conversions. They get such good fuel economy (likely a sacrifice in long teem reliability). I think a EV kit one day will be direction I take. Something good is bound to come out.

  • @GNorsworthy

    I have a 98 mk3. Up side is the engine still solid at 240k, more but not much more to maintain than a Corolla, seats 4 adults, pretty good gas mileage. Down side is the automatic transmission usually kills them if you didn’t specifically get a manual, the heater is very weak, and VW doesn’t support them so you better be good at melting plastic parts back together or making them out of JBweld and kevlar thread. Also electric windows are flaky.

    • @200degrees
      @200degrees  2 месяца назад +1

      That sounds accurate! The engine does seem to go forever, that particular MK3 I manual swapped, the Auto had gone so I got a good deal and bought some parts for the swap.
      So far I haven’t had too many interior problems but that’s good to know what to do about them!
